Maine Men #5

Shaun's Salvation

Rate this book
Romance is the last thing Shaun wants, but what if it’s exactly what he needs – and deserves?

A selfless son barely holding on

Shaun doesn’t have much of a life. When he’s not working in the restaurant in Portland, Maine, he’s home looking after his dad, who has dementia. The only people he sees on a regular basis are his coworkers, and Nathan, his dad’s in-home nurse, except he and Shaun are like ships that pass in the night. And on those dark nights when Shaun feels so alone, thoughts of Nathan are all he has to cling to.

A caring nurse

It didn’t take Nathan five minutes to know Shaun is a special guy. He’s dealt with enough indifferent families to recognize Shaun has and will always put his dad first. That’s why Nathan is willing to go above and beyond – Shaun is worth it. Nathan’s attraction to him has to go on the back burner, not that Shaun has noticed: Shaun’s focus is all on his dad.

Maybe it’s time for Nathan to convince Shaun he can keep that focus and still have a life – a life that includes love.

so, this was a bit of a mixed bag for me…. the Nathan / Shaun scenes were great, especially the build up to their relationship. everything else about this, though? didn’t love it.

this is the fifth book in an interconnected series, so it’s on me for not starting with book one, but all the side characters who were introduced in earlier entries in the series bugged the bell out of me in this one lmao. this just played into tropes i really don’t like in romance series, i.e. other co up les showing up just to be cloyingly sweet and loved up, super expository dialogue, “funny” banter, etc. i just didn’t vibe with the writing style much, i guess.

I just did a re-listen of this marvelous story - I needed a book based in Maine for a challenge and out of all the wonderful tales in this series, I picked Shaun's Salvation because it's my favorite. John Solo does a fantasic job with this emotional romance.

my original review

I just finished listening to the audio version of Shaun's Salvation, and I knew John Solo would do an amazing job! His performance of Shaun's dad is spectacular. As if this isn't an heartwrenching enough story already, the emotion that Mr. Solo adds to Peter, as his character declines into full on dementia, is incredibly touching. It is an absolutely beautiful performance.

K.C. Wells' Maine Men series flows nicely when read in order, and follows each of the friends as they find their happily-ever-afters. I’m a big fan of reading series in order, but if you were going to read any of these stories as a standalone, I highly recommend Shaun's Salvation. Not only does it work well on its own, but because Shaun’s is such an incredible story.

Each of these novels are beautiful, but K.C. Wells has truly outdone herself with this young man’s tale. Caring and kind, Shaun has selflessly put his life on hold to care for his parents. Watching his friends dip their toes into the dating pool, go off to college, and build careers for themselves must have been tough!

Emotions run high in Shaun’s Salvation, and though we get some sad scenes early on, the general mood of the story is warm and comforting. I love the scenes between Shaun and his dad, which are incredibly moving. Best of all, K.C. Wells gradually develops Shaun and Nathan's relationship, and it is perfectly done.

Yes, a bit of a heartbreaker at times,… but thoroughly uplifting, and very rewarding. Wonderful!

Really different storyline than the other 4 books. Shaun was obviously a dedicated son that was working and trying to help his father through later stage Alzheimer's. It had only been a short time since his mother had died so Shaun was barely holding on...and then he gets some help when Nathan, a nurse, is sent to help while Shaun works and continues to spend what he knows will soon be the last days with his dad. It's a very sad story since you also know how Shaun's dad's story is going to end...you just don't know when. K C Wells has done a phenomenal job of making Shaun’s story come to life and making us...the readers...care. Nathan is 43 to Shaun's 26. He's a "Gentle Giant". Big, beautiful and black and has seen the price Shaun pays for his dedication. There were lots of tears on both sides on the printed page but there were also moments of laughter. Nathan's mother was a riot! Loved that woman. "Cat", Nathan's big yellow kitty also provided some moments. As in all the books, Shaun's friends from the other 4 books came through for him. This is one special group of men that K C Wells has gifted us with.

This felt really forced and I couldn't see it as a romance. It felt like Shaun attached himself to the nearest person after his dad died - like a baby animal imprinting on its mother.

It was different to other books in the series, much more emotional and it made me cry, but the romance aspect came across as an afterthought.

My favourite thing about this series is the friendship between the guys and how they support each other, but not one showed concern for Shaun diving into a relationship when he was so recently bereaved. I'd be kind of mad if I was in Shaun's shoes! There was more concern about Seb being involved with someone who previously used drugs than there was that maybe Shaun was rushing things.

For me personally it would have been a more believable romance if the decisions about the relationship weren't made in the couple of weeks after the death. I know everyone grieves differently but Nathan felt like an emotional support crutch to me, not a boyfriend?

This one just didn't work for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Keep tissues handy for this tale of two deserving men, a biracial, age-gap M/M romance, in this Maine Men series.
* Sweet Shaun27, (cover), a waiter at a restaurant,

also tend to his Dad, who suffers from dementia. He's cared for him since his Mom's illness and death when he was 17.
This gentle, innocent soul has not gotten to go to college, no life of his own for all of these years, but he's a devoted son, giving and caring.
* Nathan, 42, RN, is the health care person

they rely on for daily help with the disease's progression. He's got a big, welcoming family, who dote on Shaun, too.

Staying professional, Nathan doesn't let on what his feelings for Shaun have become. Through the time frame, we see the decline, the devotion and the tough choices.

Nathan takes leave after the funeral to help Shaun deal with everything. We see the moments that are tender, meaningful, gut-wrenching, tear-filled and also heartwarming.
Shaun is alone in the world, other than his friends, Nathan and Nathan's family.

This tale is beautifully told, with an unlikely love for both of our men, who'll find peace and happiness.
I enjoyed this journey and the men.

I love this series. I’ve loved every book, but I have to say this one was my favorite. It’s certainly an emotional roller coaster. I cried happy and sad tears. Getting all the guys back together is just wonderful.

A sweet slow burn romance

3.5*

There were a lot of feels in this one as Shaun dealt with his father's deteriorating health.

The romance is the slowest of slow burns but it makes perfect sense as not only is Nathan Shaun's dad's nurse, there's also so much grieving to do.

I liked that Nathan demonstrated his care and growing feelings for Shaun in many little ways, but I won't lie and say I wasn't disappointed at the lack of on page intimacy.

There's always something missing for me when I don't get to see the growth in trust that lets someone be sexually vulnerable with their love interest.

Still, there's a great bunch of secondary characters in Nathan's family, as well as all the other guys from the series which helps to add to the emotional beats.

With what I think is two books to go, I'm interested in seeing how Aaron's story goes next and what will happen with Levi and Noah.

I've slowly fallen in love with this series, this author and this men as the books in Maine men has been released. Always looking forward to the next book in the series. Shaun's book had me scared. I knew it would be heavier. And it was. I cried. A lot. But next to that heaviness was a sweet and tender love story between two guys that really needed each other.

I loved this book. So, so much. Read this series, just do it. But read it in order. It will give you so much more.

4.25 - Stars

Shaun's Salvation, the 5th volume of the ‘Maine Men’ series by KC Wells, is the most emotionally overwhelming story in the series thus far.

There are actually two major story lines in Shaun's Salvation: (1) the heart-breaking story of caring for a parent with rapidly advancing Alzheimer’s Disease, and (2) the heartwarming, slow burn romance developing between 26-year old Shaun Clark, who lives to care for his father, and 43-year old Nathan Simpson, the nurse who had been hired to help care for Shaun’s dad.

Shaun is a virgin (much to his chagrin) and Nathan is a strikingly handsome gentle-giant who, as a black man, is a near rarity in the tiny town of Cape Elizabeth, ME.

Both Peter and Shaun are characterized as ‘good men’ by all who know them and both men are gay. But it took a long time before Shaun finally admitted he was gay to Nathan. From that point on, however, their mutual attraction clearly blossomed.

Wells has a special ability to create not only impressive main characters (the eight high school friends whose lives constitute the multiple novels in her series), but also, as is the case in this novel, wonderful, fully developed secondary characters such as Shaun’s father, and all the member of Nathan’s family (clearly headed by his mother, Cassie).

Be prepared to weep as you follow the excruciating progress of Peter’s Alzheimer’s Disease, and the multiple discussions of dealing with loss and grief. But also be prepared to smile and fall completely in love with Shaun and Nathan. Oh, and, of course, with Cat.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.

4.5 stars. When he thinks of it, Shaun loves a lot, if not everything, about Nathan, his warm brown eyes, his honey-colored skin, his length, his hair, his smile, oh dear..!

Nathan is forty-three years old and is the nurse who takes care of Shaun’s dad, who has dementia in the final stage.
Shaun’s life is, at twenty-six, on hold, first, he took care of his mom and now his dad. Working his job and caring for his father that’s his life, no time for romance or spending time with his friends.

Sweet, caring Nathan gives Shaun opportunities to have some time for himself. Shaun’s heart reaches out to Nathan, he understands Nathan is gay, he can’t know Shaun is too, his dad doesn’t even know.
Meanwhile, Nathan’s feelings for Shaun are getting stronger, only, he gets the impression they aren’t reciprocated.

Nathan is good for Shaun and his dad, he’s doing more than the job asks for. He desperately wants to take care of Shaun.

While Shaun is alone with his dad, Nathan has a big, warm, and friendly family. Before you know it Nathan’s mom’s arms are around Shaun and hugs her biggest hugs. Such emotional moments! My eyes blurred.

Thank goodness Shaun has his friends in his corner, just like Nathan they are there for him, to support and comfort him.
When I look at this story, I see something real, from first to the last page, every aspect of what happened with Shaun felt real, his father, the love, the hurt, Nathan, his family, all the friends, oh, let us not forget sweet and feisty Grammy, it’s a complete and satisfying journey. My eyes blurred more than once, my heart beat faster for both men. All those sweet, bittersweet emotions.
Overall, a wonderfully written, warm story, with outstanding characters and a sweet romance.

Shaun is a very caring son, trying to care for his father who is at Stage 6 with Alzheimer’s. He is also trying to keep his job at a Restaurant where he works part time.

He hires Nathan an older male nurse to help care for his Dad. Bonds are built over a six month period.

This was a lovely angst free story of two sweet gentle souls who just need to pluck up their courage and take that first step outside of being employer and employee.

As usual Shaun is surrounded by his group of Ben, Wade, Finn, Levi, and Joel and Aaron who encourage him to make that move.

Nathan has a super supportive and loving family who realise before he does, that someone really likes him.

oh, that was heavy.. yet i enjoyed it. it is my least favourite of the series so far for a couple of reasons.
some time the mention of nathan's skin color and its description gave me the ick.

i loved how the authors focused on shaun's situations and his getting closer to nathan before tackling the sex scenes. it would have felt wrong or rushed otherwise.

1/29/22 - Edited to add my comments on the audiobook:
Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

Tissues needed but so worth the tears.

When I read this book with my eyes earlier this month, I absolutely loved it and I didn’t see how it could be any better. I was pretty sure that John Solo would be doing the audiobook and, as much as I love his audio performances, I really wasn’t sure he could make me love this story any more. Boy was I wrong! The emotions that John put into his voice, in all the right places, had me reaching for the tissues even more than I did when I read it. He did a phenomenal job!

Here’s what I wrote when I first read the book:

Tissues needed but so worth the tears.

I knew this book was going to tear me up but I also knew that K.C. Wells would put me back together again and she did. We got glimpses of Nathan in book 4, Dylan’s Dilemma, but you can read this as a standalone if you have to. I think you will definitely enjoy it more though if you read the books in order.

There’s an age-gap of about 15 years between Shaun and Nathan but it’s not mentioned much in the story (which I liked). The blurb really says it all but it can’t quite convey how much Shaun cares for his father and how alone he feels except when Nathan is around. Shaun has come to rely on Nathan but it also seems like his feelings are more than that. Nathan wants to help ease Shaun’s burden and take care of him.

I loved Nathan’s family and how much they accepted Shaun and wanted to see him and Nathan get together. This book is definitely one of K.C. less spicy ones but that’s what was needed for this story; it just wouldn’t have felt right if Shaun and Nathan had jumped right into a relationship.

I fully admit that I’m a crier when it comes to reading; it doesn’t take much to make me tear up. But reading Shaun’s Salvation had me shedding more tears than I remember doing recently while reading. It’s such a wonderful tender and loving story that I couldn’t help but love it.

The whole Maine Men series is fantastic and I can’t wait to read Aaron’s Awakening coming in April 2022.

A copy of this book was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Libro molto dolce.

Shaun & Nathan

Another great instalment in this series, good story, good narration, what more could we ask for.

What a moving story, the backstory for this book is emotional and well written. I loved reading/listening to this book, and of course, we got our HEA. Well worth the read.

Shaun has been through a lot in life, even though he's still young. Things are still rough for him, but he deals with everything that's been dealt to him. He would love to be like his friends, finding their loved ones and settling down.

Nathan, a caring man, chose the profession of looking after people. Although not how he first thought of it, people seemed to judge a man and a black man for being a nurse.

Even though this book is part of the Maine Men series, each book, in my opinion, can be read alone.

We get to meet all the other men briefly in each book.

A well-written book about men, love and second chances in life: Great Narration from John Solo again. I speed up the narration to 1.40. but this is usual for me, and I find most people read too slowly.

Rating : 4.5 stars.

Shaun (26) leads a busy life revolving around working and also caring for his father Peter who has Alzheimers. His is an unselfish life that leaves no time for anything let alone romance. Nathan (43) is an extremely compassionate, gentle and caring at home nurse who cares for Peter when Shaun is working. He is also the friend that understands what Shaun is going through and what support and comfort he needs.

This is a beautifully written slow burn, low heat, emotional romance between two characters that come together after months of a friendship that evolves from professional to personal. Peter, and the interactions with him by both Shaun and Nathan are written with such sensitivity and in the most caring of ways. Be prepared for some very emotional scenes that had tears quietly streaming down my face. There’s no angst in the romance element of the story but, naturally, there’s some angst in regards to Peter and the trajectory of his Alzheimers.

The characters from the previous books in the series are there for Shaun and we get to meet Nathan’s wonderfully loud and loving family including his mother who can cook up a storm, wrangle the family and has endless love to share. This is my favourite of the series so far and I look forward to more.

I'm totally in love with this series. These bestfriends have stolen my heart. Each book is wonderful and this one gave me sooooo many emotions. I laughed, had a lot of sniffles and smiled throughout the entire story. Shaun and Nathan sweet romance touch my heart. This had a little angst which I was good with and had me swept up in it's entirety. Through the heartache and pain...Shaun has his friends and now his love with Nathan...new year full of happiness for him and I'm so happy he gets to live it...5Stars!!

Emotional romance

Really enjoying this series, and this has got to be the best so far. A beautiful slow burn romance which is packed full of emotion and poignancy. If you're the sort of reader who likes their books fast pace, then this definitely is not for you. However, if you don't mind something a little slower and character driven, then I would highly recommend this as book you can easily get lost in. Shaun and Nathan are very well written, I also adored Cassie, Nathan's mum. Lovely writing, with a gorgeous ending.

This is not the book to read when you're having your hair done. People are apt to ask why you need a tissue and why your eyes are red.

A lovely, lovely story, and while the loss of Shaun's father was a given, it was heartbreaking. How fortunate Shaun had Nathan as well as a bunch of secondary characters who were a pleasure to read.

Happy New Life!

This is a story about a debilitating disease, grief and love involving sweetheart, Waiter Shaun and dedicated Geriatric Nurse Nathan. What an emotional tale. The story has likable MCs, though a little too perfect, an interesting enough, sad premise, and just enough sexy bits to make it engaging. Bring on the tissues and read an entertaining book.
