Captivity Alaska #2

Playing Dirty in Alaska

Rate this book
Bush pilot Bridget Shanahan runs from responsibility like a child runs from a dentist appointment, but when her brother leaves the family’s airfield in her hands, she knows it’s time to step up and behave like a Responsible Adult ™. So of course that’s when Archer Ellison III blows into her tiny town of Captivity, Alaska, every inch the hot-as-hell mistake that most definitely belongs in her past. Been there, done that, and didn’t even get to keep the commemorative sweatshirt

Archer has only ever had two goals. Now that he’s built his own empire outside his father’s company, he can move on to goal #2—winning back the one who got away by whatever means necessary. He knows it won’t be easy. Bridget Shanahan is older, wiser, more self-assured, and jaw-droppingly stunning…and doing everything she can to pretend the scorching chemistry between them doesn’t exist.

But fate is on his side. After an impulsive bet that would have sent Archer packing goes awry, Bridget is officially stuck with him. Which is really inconvenient, since falling for Archer again is the least responsible thing she could do.

"Even when I hated you, I loved you."
Due to some health issues, reading this book took me longer than expected. Not the book's fault at all! I was looking forward to checking out Bridget's story. I have a soft spot for strong heroines and second-chance romance, so I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. I enjoyed this book even more than the first one in the series!

"Jesus, she undid him. Always had. Always will."
Bridget really is a badass heroine, and her own woman, strong and independent, and I loved her for it. At the same time, she's such a caring, tender person, with a kind heart. That heart was broken years ago, and she doesn't want to fall for that again, so she keeps her love life casual. No chance of anyone getting close enough for her to want to make them stay. No chance of trusting enough to open her up to heartache again. At the same time, she's dealing with guilt over the loss of her brother.

"You're not just a good guy, Archer. You're my guy."
I liked Archer from the start. We know he broke Bridget's heart from the previous book, but he's here to show her he hasn't forgotten about her in the years they've been apart. I loved how he sets out to break her walls, and all the ways he chose to do it, especially not being what she expected him to be. He surprises her every step of the way.

"My heart breaks every day just looking at you."
Archer and Bridget had history in college, until he left her behind, absolutely breaking her heart. It took her a while to recover, and he was someone she never wanted to see again. She never did forget him, though, even when she resented him. He never forgot her. And now he's back in her life, being a pain in the ass, and making her remember their history together.
While her brother is off on his honeymoon, Bridget is taking care of their shipping company back home. Until she injures her back and is unable to fly her plane, and she needs Archer's help to keep the company going. He jumps at the opportunity to win her back.

"We've never been done, Bridge. We'll never be done."
I loved how he tears down her walls and never backs down. I loved how he keeps surprising her by doing things that she doesn't see coming. I loved how she slowly let herself go, and allowed herself to be loved. It's not an easy ride.
Bits of their time together come in the smallest things: a sweatshirt, pictures taken when they were together, memories of what they had. It's endearing, and very heartwarming.
When they're together, things heat up quite fast. Their chemistry is scorching, their moments together both hot and very intimate, while loving as well.

The secondary characters help bring the story to life. Even Key, the dog, is such a wonderful element to this book, as is Shay's ghost, again being the voice of reason when his brothers need it.

"I'm yours. Whenever you're ready for me."
This was a wonderful second-chance story of two people who were meant to be together from the start, but got sidetracked in the process. They finally found their way back to each other, and life finally gave them a break and allowed them to have the happily ever after they deserve.

Loved this one more than the last!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I got to know many of the main characters from Book One, Wild in Captivity, a few months ago and definitely recommend reading that one before this edition for the best possible outcome.
There are so many awesome things happening in this story that for me, it really leveled up the series. For one, I really love how Archer was all in from the beginning. He was on a mission to change her mind and was patient and loving throughout.
Beck created Archer as the perfect balance for Bridget as she tried warming up to a second chance romance with the one that broke her heart. The delicate balancing act and subtle plays were written perfectly and added so much to the life of this story.
Beck is also not shy about putting the heat and steam right out there and the pages were simmering! I loved the intense connection between the two that showcased the fact they truly were supposed to be together.
A few twists and low angst made Playing Dirty in Alaska my favorite one so far in the series and I cannot wait for the next installment. We get a bit of a glimpse of who that will be about and I am excited!
I had been waiting for Bridge’s story since I’d finished the previous book. Though I wasn’t an fan of everything there was in this story, it sure was a deliciously sexy second chance.
My main complaint is about Archer. First, he was a bit too manipulative for me. He had a goal, and Bridget needed to be challenged for sure, but sometimes it felt like he pushed Bridge’s boundaries too far. Also, as much as he claimed that he’d always loved her, he also admited that he hadn’t been celibate during the four years they were apart–major no no for me. I didn’t doubt his feelings though, and they resulted in both very hot and very romantic scenes. I ended up having mixed feelings about him.
I loved Bridget though! She was a badass hiding a tender heart under a tough exterior. But when you know her story with Archer, and what happened to her twin brother, you understand her need for armor. And it made the way she shed it piece by piece even more admirable. She was also fiercely protective of the people she loved. A very compelling character.
Secondary plotlines that started in the first book were still there–like Lilah’s little secret, for instance. It was nice to have some threads linking the second book to the first. And the epilogue promises an exciting third book.
Family was a strong theme, with comparisons between Archer’s and Bridget’s, what family love means, some reflections upon disappointing parents and competing with siblings. They wove into the romance, challenging Archer and Bridget’s relationship, forcing them to make choices, making them grow. Though sometimes it felt a tiny bit repetitive, they kept the story going until its utterly satisfying end.
And the sexy bits? Delicious. This author sure knows how to add the unexpected spice to make it crazy hot. I wonder what she’ll use to season her next book.
Quickie
- Series: Captivity Alaska #2 (can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #small town romance #second chance #billionaire romance
- Triggers: past death
- Main couple: Bridget Shanahan & Archer Ellison III
- Hotness: 5/5
- Romance: 5/5
- + piloting a plane made sexy
- – who wants to slap Archer’s father as much as me?
4.5 Stars! I'm super picky about second chance romances and this one example of the kind I love.
This is not a spoiler because you learn right away that Archer never wanted to end things with Bridget. He had some tough choices he had to make but he held hope that he would get her back one day. That's what made this second chance so good to me. I love a hero who knows when he finds the one.
Bridget was a fun heroine. I liked her attitude and while she made Archer work for it, she also let him in. That means you get to see them together a lot and I love that.
This had a fun cast of side characters that just added to the story. I haven't read book one but I am definitely buying it to read. Great book!
Second book in the series....Bridget was not easily susceptible to Archer and his machinations and she shouldn't to easily swayed in my opinion, I felt that he manipulated her a little to much, yes he may have loved her, but I hate when someone claims that you are the love of their life but then they sleep with others, yes yes I know it was 4 years, but thats one of my pet peeves even if it is a little illogical. Yes she did too but it was the circumstances that pushed her to get to where she was, and didn't fault her, she was hurt. I liked that she was a strong woman, but eventually she ended up getting the love that she deserved.
This is a second in a series of bush pilots in Alaska. I love a great second chance romance in Alaska especially when he has to work extra hard. There was a lot of family drama and heartache. I totally felt the loss of her brother and I loved her visions of him though they came from guilt they helped her through his loss. I still feel my Dad around me and he's been gone for 5 years.
This had some fun forced proximity as Bridget injures herself trying to show off and Archer offers to take care of her and enacts his plan to win her back. He brings out the big guns. Even though his father does not think it's a good idea and wants him out of this small town in Alaska he's not having any of it.
These two get super steamy especially since he plays hard to get which denies them both what they want.
I’m a sucker for hero-in-pursuit stories and I’ve been a fan of Samanthe Beck since she wrote for the Entangled Brazen line (which were some of the first steamier romances I read back in the mid 2010s). I read and enjoyed the first in the Captivity Alaska series so I’d been waiting for another book with the Shanahan siblings. Fortunately it wasn’t a long wait for Bridget’s book and I enjoyed it even more than her sibling Trace’s book, so it’s win-win for me!
PLAYING DIRTY IN ALASKA is the second instalment in Samanthe Beck’s contemporary, adult CAPTIVITY ALASKA erotic, romance series. This is twenty-five year old, pilot Bridget Shanahan, and twenty-nine year old businessman/pilot Archer Ellison’s story line. PLAYING DIRTY IN ALASKA can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalment is revealed where necessary. There is a slight paranormal element to the story line.
SOME BACKGROUND: Several months earlier Bridget Shanahan’s twin brother Shay died when his plane slammed into the side of a mountain. In the ensuing months, LA business and investment firm Ellison Enterprises has struggled to purchase the family owned Shanahan Captivity Air, a struggle that brings former lovers Bridget Shanahan and Archer Ellison back together,
Told from third person perspective PLAYING DIRTY IN ALASKA follows businessman and pilot Archer Ellison as he attempts to win back the woman he loves. Four year earlier, Archer was forced out of our heroine’s life but has never stopped loving the woman whose heart he broke. With his arrival in Captivity, Alaska, Archer Ellison begins a slow seduction of our story line heroine but Bridget has built a wall around her heart, a wall that Archer is determined to tear down, one brick at a time. A bet between our couple finds Bridget injured and unable to fly, and Archer offers up his services in an effort to win back the woman he loves. What ensues is the rebuilding romance and relationship between Bridget and Archer, and the potential fall-out as Bridget continues to struggle with issues of trust that are about to push our couple apart.
Meanwhile Bridget is unable to let go of the guilt about her brother’s death. In times of stress, Shay’s ‘ghost’ returns to talk to his sister, trying relieve our heroine of her broken heart.
The relationship between Bridget and Archer is one of second chances; a rekindling romance between two people torn apart by power and control, money and deception, family and duty. Bridget never knew the truth about Archer’s disappearance, and in the ensuing years, the anger continued to build until Bridget felt there was nothing and no one to tame her heart. Archer had never stopped loving our story line heroine, and was determined to make amends for sins of the past but proving he was worthy of a second chance meant breaking down barriers Bridget placed around her heart. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters including Bridget’s brother and co-owner of Captivity Air Trace and his soon to be wife Izzy (Wild in Captivity 1) , Inn owner Rose Iquat, and her daughter Lilah; bar owner/ former Army special forces Ford Langley; pilots Wyatt ‘Wingnut’ Jensen and Maddox ‘Mad Dog’ Douglas. We are introduced to Archer’s sister Ainsley, and their father Archer Ellison II.
PLAYING DIRTY IN ALASKA is a story of grief and loss, family and relationships, friendships, secrets, power and control, second chances and love. The premise is emotional, tragic and compelling; the romance is spirited and fated; the characters are sassy, broken, and energetic.
This is the perfect book to kick off the new year! I smiled the whole way through this sexy second chance romance and return to Captivity, Alaska. Archer wants Bridget. Bridget wants nothing to do with Archer. But Archer isn't going anywhere and the ensuing battle of wills and banter and undeniable chemistry, made this such a fun read. Then there's the hotness that is Archer. *sigh* I mean, he had me at the name Archer. :)
I loved this story and cannot wait for the next book in the series!!
Bridget's response to her first and only love, Archer, appearing in her life 4 years after devastating her heart? Kiss another man and walk away. Unfortunately for her, Archer only takes this as proof that she either still cares about him or that she is still attracted to him. Either way, it's good for him, because it means his plan to win her back has a chance at working. Is he insane? Or does he know Bridget so well, better than she knows herself?
The last thing Bridget needs right now is Archer back in her life. She's trying to adult right now and the biggest mistake of her life mucking around trying to win her back won't help her tendency to run away from things. She's taking over the management of her family's airline now that her brother is about to head off to his honeymoon. She no longer has her twin brother around to keep her grounded. And she likes her life the way it is. Right?
Second chance love has never been so sexy and fun. I loved how hard Bridget fought against Archer being back in her life. And I love how persistent he was in winning her back. Captivity, Alaska is a fun world, can't wait for more!
5 star review of Playing Dirty In Alaska (Captivity, Alaska #2) by Samanthe Beck
I love stories set in small towns and could easily see myself in Captivity, Alaska. This is a second change at love story for bush pilot Bridget Shanahan and Archer Ellison III.
For Archer, Bridget is the one who got away and he is bound and determined to win her back. What he doesn't count on is her determination to ignore the intense attraction that still sizzles between them.
When circumstances play into his hands, Archer knows that fate is on his side. This book can certainly be read as a stand alone. I haven't read book one in the series but after finishing Playing Dirty In Alaska I immediately went and one clicked the first book.
This was an emotional story of loss, grief and guilt that was handled realistically. The banter was witty and the steam was certainly there with this well written romantic story. Bridget and Archer were meant to be together and I loved that they finally got the happily ever after that they deserved. I received a copy from the publisher through Netgalley.
Oooh, this was so good!
Wow - Bridget is one tough cookie! This second chance romance has her college boyfriend, who broke her heart, coming to her hometown determined to win her back. Archer is patient, focused, and absolutely committed to getting what he wants. His explanation about understanding her language was simply beautiful. Their will-they-won't-they dance was perfectly choreographed and I loved every bit of it.
This author's writing style easily roped me in, with intriguing and compelling characters. The unusual pairing of Key and Wally was a stroke of genius and probably one of my favorite of such pairings I've ever read. It was such a joy to return to Captivity, and this book is every bit as good as the first one. This is a delightful small town with realistic characters and I'm really looking forward to the next book. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I'm really enjoying this series!
This is the second book in the Captivity series and it's a second change between Bridget Shanahan and Archer who were in a relationship in the past until Archer broke her heart, even if he didn't want to. He's back now, 4 years later, to win her back, but Bridget isn't having it. She doesn't want to get her heart broken again, so the best thing she can do is to play hard to get, and oh does she do that! Bridget is one of the most stubborn characters I've ever read, and that's a compliment in her case! She's hard-headed, but is confident in that, and with Archer's persistence, the book becomes filled with banter and cute moments between the couple!
I'm really excited to see who is next in this series!
So I am jumping into this series at Book #2 - a second-chance romance set in Alaska. SOLD
Archer walked away from his one true love, and didn't look back. Four-years later, he returns to Captivity, Alaska to win back Bridget. This sexy Yeti has a lot of groveling to do to prove he's here to stay forever. Playing Dirty in Alaska's pages sizzle with intense chemistry and steam worthy scenes.
I devoured this book in one-day, enjoying it more than I could've imagined. Is the ending a glimpse into what we can expect in the next installment?
This is a good second chance romance. Bridget and Archer had a good story. Archer is in Captive to win back Bridget's heart. Bridget is having a hard time opening up to Archer. Neither has gotten over their feelings for each other.
These two go through a lot of situations, family drama, and misunderstandings in order to find their way back to each other. I wish we would've gotten a little more in the epilogue. It really is more for setting up Lilah's book.
A great read. Will it be a second chance romance for Archer and Bridget, or will she not be able to trust him after how he hurt her years ago?
She is stuck relying on him to help out after losing a bet and then injuring her, but she still won't let her guard down. Can he convince her that he has changed?
Looking forward to the next book in this series.
Bridget is a pilot that runs away from responsibility until her brother leaves the business to her. Everything is running smoothly until businessman/pilot Archer shows up. The two have a past together. Archer has accomplished all he wants in business, now he wants to get the one woman that got away from him. Bridget is trying to keep away from Archer until a bet lands them together. A good read with heart.
Playing Dirty in Alaska is book 2 in the series Captivity Alaska by Samanthe Beck a new to me author
Bridget and Archer met sometime ago, hooked up then parted ways. Now he’s walked back into her life determined to win her back but she is determined not to fall again.
Chemistry, second chances, breaking down walls, rebuilding trust and so much more. Can’t wait for more from Ms. Beck!
Alaskan bush pilot Bridget Shanahan is working on being more responsible so that she can help her brother Trace with the management of their family business, Captivity Air and Freight. He's heading off on his honeymoon and leaving her in charge of the airfield, and Bridget wants Trace to know that he can trust her to handle things while he's gone. The last thing she needs is her college ex-boyfriend, Archer Ellison III, showing up four years after their breakup, determined to win her back. Bridget wants nothing to do with Archer after the way he unceremoniously dumped her in college, though it's tough to fight the chemistry that is as strong as ever between them. When a silly dare leads to Bridget being injured, she can't afford to refuse Archer's offer of help in Trace's absence. Will it be the opening Archer needs to convince Bridget to give him another chance?
For the most part, I enjoyed Archer and Bridget's second chance romance. Their banter was fun and they certainly had plenty of chemistry. However, I was sometimes a bit uncomfortable with Archer's behavior towards Bridget because it felt manipulative. She was really vulnerable after losing her twin brother, Shay, in a plane crash a few months earlier. In the previous book of the series, Archer tried to take advantage of that to purchase Trace's interest in Captivity Air and Freight so that he could force Bridget to work with him. When that failed, he decided to move to Alaska and pursue her anyway. Despite Archer's behavior, I truly believed that he loved Bridget, and nothing he did was intended maliciously; it just didn't always feel honest. He wasn't very good at communicating with her, either. Bottom line, Archer wanted Bridget to trust him but wasn't willing to fully trust her, and that was a real problem right up until the end of the book.
Overall, I did enjoy and would recommend "Playing Dirty in Alaska," though "Wild in Captivity" remains my favorite of the series so far. I look forward to the next book.
I fell in love with captivity in the first book of this series… Wild in captivity
By the end of that we were left with this huge cliffhanger…. What about Bridget???
So here is the answer and I gotta say … I did not see this coming 😱😱😱
I love second chances romances but this one has a lot of twists… paranormal, meddling family, pets, action … and of course beautiful settings that Samanthe Beck so beautifully describes for us
I was soooo hooked with Archer and Bridget I lost track of time and devoured the book
I hope you love it as much as I did
And I need to say I hope Lilah’s book comes soon cause I’m dying to what happens to her
I give it 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Playing D in Alaska by S. Beck is the second stand-alone in this series. The previous book is just as great as this one and I recommend to read them in order.
Pilot Bridget is a strong heroine who knows what she wants and how to get it. And what she doesn't want is giving a second chance to the man who broke her heart.
Archer III. wants to win her back, but easier said than done. He relocates his company to Alaska and now the fun begins. A well written second chance story, witty and fun with twists and turns, lol moments galore, a great read, 4,5 stars.
Playing Dirty in Alaska is an immensely entertaining and satisfying second chance romance. Samanthe Beck is a master at combining humor, steam, and more serious elements into one amazing story.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Bridget is a pilot at her family’s airfield in Captivity, Alaska. She left to go to Stanford, and met Archer there. But, when Archer breaks up with her and leaves without explanation, she sinks into depression and ultimately heads back to Captivity without finishing her degree. Four years later, Archer is in town to seek out the love of his life and get back together. Bridget has had a rough few years, and isn’t ready to forgive the man who abandoned her.
This book is a great second chance love story. Usually I get frustrated when couples struggle to reconnect, but I loved Bridget’s completely reasonable resistance. She is a tough woman, and doesn’t take crap from most people. Bridget feels a lot of guilt and loss, and it’s tough for her to let herself be vulnerable for Archer. While she is fearful of getting hurt again, Archer’s longing and pining is key to winning her over.
Even with all that angst, this is a hot, steamy book! And, the banter and humor is fantastic.
Bridget’s brother Shay’s death, with its consequences and grief, play a role throughout this series; but, he’s also the key to a lot of the underlying humor. Even though this is book 2 in the Captivity, Alaska series, it can easily be read as a stand alone. But, you’ll probably want to go back and catch up on Faking it in Alaska if you haven’t already read it.
If you are a fan of second chance romance with humor and steam, read Playing Dirty in Alaska. It’s a well constructed story with great characters you’ll want to spend more time with.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Hat ihre Liebe eine zweite Chance verdient?
Als Bridget Shanahan den Flughafen in Captivity von ihrem Bruder übernimmt, ist es Zeit für sie erwachsen zu werden und ihre Vergangenheit hinter sich zu lassen. Ausgerechnet jetzt taucht Archer Ellison III in dem kleinen Städtchen in Alaska auf. Sein Ziel: Bridgets Herz zurückzuerobern. Nachdem er es endlich geschafft hat, sich ein eigenes Imperium unabhängig von seinem Vater aufzubauen, will er unbedingt die Frau, die er noch immer liebt, wieder für sich gewinnen. Und so kauft er kurzerhand ein Haus in der kleinen Stadt und ist fortan wieder Teil von Bridgets Leben. Ganz zu ihrem Leidwesen. Denn obwohl sie alles tut, um ihn auf Abstand zu halten, kann sie die sengende Hitze zwischen ihnen nicht leugnen ...
Bridget durch ihre damalige Trennung möchte keine neuen Beziehungen eingehen, aber als sie wieder auf ihre College liebe Archer trifft, fängt für sie etwas unverhofftes an. Seine plötzliche nähe und Hilfsbereitschaft sind für ihr Herz gefährlich.
Archer möchte mit Bridget zusammen sein und - schmiedet seit geraumer Zeit schon Pläne, wie er sie wieder erobern kann. Ob es ihm gelingt müsst ihr schon selbst herausfinden.
Es ist eine tolle Story die mit einer Prise Humor verziert ist, gefühlvoll, auch sehr prickelnd.
Durch die beiden Sichtweisen konnte ich alles verstehen und nachvollziehen. Der Schreibstil ist schön locker, liest sich gut.
Mit der Geschichte konnte mich die Autorin überzeugen und hat mir schöne Lesestunden beschert.
Es ist empfehlenswert.
DNF @ chapter 14.
I can't believe how many 4 star reviews this book got.
My main porblem is thay the main male character is very manipulative and cohesive towards the MFC, almost forcing her to do things she didn't want and pushing her boundaries, bribing her, etc. (i.e., he offered her to fly his plane in exchange of "a night with her naked body to do whatever he pleases..." I mean, really? what a creep... like, is she your personal prostitute or what? #cringe #notsexy #facepalm #toxicguy)
I didn't like him or his attitude at all, which is a shame because I really liked the first book. I'm going to give the 3rd book a chance. Hopefully, it'll be better and make more sense, plot wise.
Another thing is that the MFC, in theory, hates the MMC for disappearing on her 4 years ago, almost demanding a restraining order when re re-appears in her life. But then, almost immediately, she lets him into her bed... I mean, hello? What's the deal? Do you hate him or not? if not, just stop it with the drama and pretending to be reluctant around him.
Like, you only live once, and there are hundreds of books I'd like to get around to reading, so please stop wasting my time like this...
I'm quite disappointed by the 2nd installment of this trilogy as the plot was totally off. But hey, that's just my opinion. Cheers to you of you liked it.
Thank you to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC and the opportunity to read this book before it was published in exchange for an honest feedback.
Did I say before it was published? Oops. College got in the way and I was only able to finish reading it after its publication date but here’s a review nevertheless.
The story begins when Bridget Shanahan, a pilot for her family’s business, is face-to-face to her former lover and currently #1 nemesis, Archer Ellison III (yes, the third). Archer has tried to successfully finish a business with Bridget’s sister-in-law and, regardless the deal falling through, Archer’s main goal in going to Captivity was to get what he always wanted: get Bridget back. Forever. However, there is a lot of bad blood from Bridget’s side that she can’t simply let go. In order to get rid of Archer, Bridget decides to take him on a bet but, when the impulsiveness ends up hitting her in the ass (quite literally), Bridget is stuck with Archer for a month, and Archer will not let that opportunity go to waste.
I honestly had no idea what to expect. I didn’t read the first book of the series (I didn’t even realize it was a series, oops) and so I went completely blind. In some ways, I’m glad I did because it allowed me to have two perspectives on something that not only wrecked Bridget’s trust and ability to fall in love but also revealed a lot about Archer’s personality and, hence, character development.
Bridget’s internal struggle is one of the things that I identified the most with this book. Although I do not have a long, lost person I was completely in love with, I do have people who have betrayed me, mistreated me and, most of all, made me lose faith, trust and have made me question if I could ever fall in love. Being someone who has been hurt countless times before, I completely relate to Bridget’s struggle and completely denial in everything regarding to Archer.
In its own merit, Archer’s perspective allows the reader to completely understand why he did it. After all, he was still a young man when he left Bridget and, yes, although he could’ve done things completely different and the outcome would’ve been as painful as it was for both of them, neither of them would’ve probably grown up as much as they did. Archer realized his mistake and, despite that, realized that he needed to have his business and professional life in order before he could go back to Bridget.
Bless Archer’s patience and chivalry, for that is what Bridget needed. Archer was determined, yes, but he was also patient and when he realized that constant pushing Bridget over wouldn’t help his cause, he completely showed Bridget that he was willing to wait as long as she needed – as long as she didn’t play him.
The sexual scenes were so well and, at times, beautifully written. Not only did they added a very important aspect to their relationship, which helped Bridget open up more to Archer and use their sexual attraction as an excuse to get close to him without admitting to herself that she still had feeling for him, but it also showed how beautiful the act can be when two people are overflowing with love for the other.
The side characters were very entertaining and I got really curious for what the future reserves for a few of them. I also loved how the author incorporated a little bit of native Alaskan (is that a word?) culture with some Inuti and Tlingit language as well as characters. Although the focus was not that, in particular, I really liked how easily incorporated it in the story without sounding like we’re being given a History lesson (although, as a History nerd, I probably wouldn't have mind it.)
My only problem with the story was mostly how the narration would often repeat itself. I know these characters didn't resolve their issues with a snap on their fingers, but I do believe the narrator of certain things was a little bit too long. However, that was nothing too overwhelming that would take away from the amazing story and great writing.
I have a few books from Samanthe Beck on my TBR but they were never a priority. Having had the opportunity to see how she beautifully constructs her stories, I’m definitely reading the first one in the series and continuing exploring more books from her.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
“Let go of me.”
“Is that any way to thank a guy for saving you from a face-plant?”
“Thank you. Now, are we done here?”
He loosened his hold, then felt and heard her shaky exhale and smiled. Into her ear, he said, “We’ve never been done, Bridge. We’ll never be done.”
Playing Dirty in Alaska is the second book in Samanthe Beck’s Captivity, Alaska series and can be read as a standalone.
Filled with playful humour and fiery chemistry, Playing Dirty in Alaska was a delightful & captivating second chance romance and I loved every moment of it.
When Bridget Shanahan’s brother leaves the family’s airfield in her hand’s while he goes on his honeymoon, she knows it’s time to step up and behave like a responsible adult. So of course, that’s when her old collage boyfriend & the man who shattered her heart, Archer Ellison III shows up in her small town of Captivity, Alaska.
Archer is just as hot and just as compelling as Bridget remembers & he’s intent on winning back her trust and her heart. He knows it won’t be easy, but after an impulsive bet that would have sent Archer packing goes awry, Bridget has no choice but to rely on him for help.
“The attachment you feel? It isn’t physical. It’s something deeper. I’m not even going to need four weeks to prove it to you.”
I adored the humour in this book. Beyond being entertaining, the witty camaraderie between the characters was an excellent way of illustrating the friendships & bonds between the characters, particularly between Bridget and Archer. The easy way they fell back into their friendship and old rhythms despite Bridget’s reluctance to risk letting him back into her life was a great way to give readers a quick glimpse at what their relationship was like while they were in college, as well as capture the intensity of the lingering chemistry between them even after four years apart.
It also helped put the reader into Bridget’s shoes & imagine, if not experience, the full force of emotions she would have felt when Archer broke her heart & why she would be so reluctant to let him back into her life.
“Five years, four weeks—doesn’t matter, either way.” Using the cold metal stair rail for help, she pulled herself to her feet. “I’m not ready. I’m never going to be ready. Walk away, Archer. You know how. Find someone else.”
I loved Archer so much. There’s nothing better than a romance hero who is completely, utterly, and unapologetically besotted with the heroine, and Archer more than fulfilled that role.
“My heart breaks every day just looking at you.”
Her breath faltered. “Then don’t,” she whispered. “Don’t look at me.”
Yep. That would be her answer. As much as it killed him, he couldn’t stop himself from smiling.
“It’s no good. My heart broke worse all those days I couldn’t look at you.”
The chemistry between Bridget and Archer was off the charts. Their history added so much depth to the tension and anticipation between them & made for more than a few explosive interactions between them.
The evil smile she wore when she tipped her face to the camera again said it all. “What next?”
It took two swallows to find his voice. “I want you to touch yourself the way I tell you to—the way I would touch you if I was there to do it.”
While there was a lot of charm & humour throughout the book, there were also some sombre moments as Bridget deals with the guilt she feels around the death of her twin brother, Shay. Shay died in a plane crash prior to the start of the first book in the series, Wild in Captivity , which focuses on Bridget’s older brother, Trace. But I found that these more sombre moments didn’t take away from the overall light-hearted mood of the book.
Playing Dirty in Alaska was a wonderfully fun novel with loveable characters and an engaging plot, and I can’t wait to revisit Captivity, Alaska and all its charismatic residents when the next book comes out.
This is my first book by Samanthe Beck and it is safe to say it will definitely. not be my last. Samanthe Beck swiftly drew me into this second chance romance. Beck's writing is easily engaging, she characters are interesting and I was swept up in the Alaskan setting and family run airfield. Beck layers in lighthearted moments with real life sorrows and problems to build this romance between two people who have loved each other for years and have to learn to trust again.
Bridget, the heroine, has been left in charge of her family's airfield while her brother is on his honeymoon, so she is ready to set into her adulthood and prove she is capable. But her confidence is thrown off when her College Sweetheart walks back into her life ready to prove that he still loves her and that they are meant to be together. After a challenge Bridget finds herself in need of Archer's help in order to keep the airfield running smoothly without her brother cancelling his honeymoon plans. Archer, knowing that forced proximity is a great way to break down Bridget's walls, takes every opportunity he can to become indispensable to her as well as show her that she needs to trust herself and live her life to the fullest. (Content Notes: there is death of a brother that is explored and discussed through Bridget, death does not happen in this book.)
This book is a face paced, sensually steamy and charmingly romantic story. I loved watching the cat and mouse game between Bridget and Archer play out. Bridget is confident and independent and she keeps her walls up to prove she is strong. Archer is sure of himself and his love for Bridget that he know that persistence and openness will help him win his battle against Bridget's protected heart. Archer is absolutely swoon worthy as he learns to readjust his tactics, learn to understand Bridget better, and show her that she is the most important person in the world to him. I loved watching Bridget's walls slowly crumble as Archer shows her again and again that he loves her. This novel is also delightfully steamy, Samanthe Beck has done a wonderful job of using their physical exploration as another way of showing the reader how Bridget feels and how she is learning to trust again. The physical relationship between Bridget and Archer is very nicely done, and really speaks to who they are as a couple with a past and how their bodies trust and know each other.
I would very highly recommend this novel, if you love a second chance romance with a wonderful steam level and a hero who will do anything to win his heroine back, this is definitely the book for you! I am looking forward to reading the first book in this series, as well as seeing where this series will continue to grow.
