A Place to Start Over

Rate this book
Small Town Romance

Can one bad decision change your life?

While recuperating from her biggest mistake, Harriet’s had time to plan a fresh start, away from the city.
With a business plan on her laptop and determination in her heart, she leaves Sydney, heading north. It’s a long drive and she’s only just beginning to heal, so she’s booked a stopover at Barrington Homestead on the way.
Harriet meets Drummond Murray on the road to Barrington. He’s a cattle farmer and fifth generation local. Impeccable manners but not much warmth. She has no choice but to accept his assistance, but she’s not keen to see him again.
In contrast, Ben Evans is a local stock and station agent, good humoured, warm and welcoming. Except Harriet isn’t looking for romance and she’s keen to continue her journey north. Circumstances conspire to keep her in Barrington and after months of feeling helpless, feeling needed strikes a chord.
A cast of local characters and new friendships make her wonder if this might just be her place to start over.

Harriet Russell wasn't all that far from Barrington, the place she'd decided to stay for a few days, after leaving Sydney in her wake. Recovering from a near death experience, the surgeries had taken their toll. Now she just needed to find herself, and peace, while she continued her recovery. Staying at Barrington Homestead, Rose's B&B, and venturing out as she needed to, she gradually met the locals. All friendly and welcoming, she was on hand at Debbie's cafe when she was needed, as well as helping out Ben senior and Ben junior at the real estate office in town. Harriet had a vision for her future and she was beginning to think Barrington was the place she could make it all happen.

Drummond Murray and his ten year old daughter Billie owned a property with beef cattle and horses, and Drum was well liked in town. As Harriet got to know them, she was delighted with Billie's adorable nature, her obvious love for her father, as well as her love of animals. Harriet - and another friend she'd made, Laura - decided to help with the upcoming cattle sales. But would the locals agree to take on their help? Or would they want to stick to the old ways?

A Place to Start Over is #3 in the Barrington Series by Aussie author Susan Mackie and I loved it! Catching up with old friends - characters already known to me - was great, and visualising Barrington fictionalised by the author, while I know how it really is, is amazing. I'm very much looking forward to the next in the series, but do recommend reading it in order :) Highly recommended.

I loved being back in this beautiful town of Barrington, it was like coming home to family and friends with such a warm welcome after reading the first book in this series Charlie’s Will, this time we meet Harriet, after a rough time in Sydney Harriet wants a new start and is on her way to finding it when she hits a kangaroo and her life changes for the better when she and the town open their arms to each other.

Harriet is still in pain from her past but she is strong and determined, but hitting the kangaroo stuns her a bit thank heavens there is someone there to help after her car is damaged, Drummond Murray is tall and eager to help even if he comes across a bit standoffish. She has booked a few nights at a B&B at the Barrington Homestead where she meets Rose Gordon and her partner Angus she instantly feels welcome.

Drummond offers the use of his spare car while hers is being repaired and soon Harriet is finding her way around the small town, where she meets real estate and stock agent, Ben Evans and her thoughts about finding a place to start over seem to be coming to fruition in this small and welcoming town. Harriet is soon making friends and the town people are loving her and the help she is giving them.

But her heart is also opening up to the strong and handsome Drum Murray and his young daughter Billie, but Harri is keeping a lot to herself about her past and before she can look to the future she needs to open up. Drum is finding it harder to forget Harri he sees her as strong and beautiful but there is a vulnerability about her as he gets to know her better.

This is a beautifully written story filled with heart-felt emotion as Harri and Drum find love and happiness in this town with so many wonderful characters, I want to move there and become a part of this town and I do hope that we can visit again, there are some other people that need their HEA in the beautiful way that Susan Mackie has given Harri and Drum theirs. I do highly recommend this one, it is a true romance and sure to leave the reader smiling.

My thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.

Earlier this year I read Charlie’s Will and fell in love with Barrington and everything about it. When Susan Mackie reached out with another book in the series it was a no brainer to accept a copy of A Place to Start Over. And it was wonderful.

These books make me want to live in the country. The sense of community, friendships and loyalty shines out through the pages of these books. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy. It was a fantastic story of starting over, picking yourself up and making a new start, name not just for our main character Harriet.

Harriet is paving Sydney and heading north. She has had a rough few years and is ready for some peace and quiet and a new life. She has a business plan ready and is looking for the perfect place to live. When she hits a kangaroo on the road new Barrington, she has to wait a while for her car to be repaired. She never imagined that she would find a new home here. But soon enough she is throwing herself into local life, helping out local businesses and making new friends. And is that a chance at love also on the horizon?

With all the characters that I loved from Charlie’s Will, A Place to Start Over is like a big warm hug. All the good in people is in this book and it really did make me smile. Thank you Susan.

Thank you Susan for sending us a copy to read and review.
I have been so keen to revisit the town and characters of Barrington after reading Charlie’s Will and I was in for treat and left feeling very satisfied.
Harriet leaves Sydney in search of a place to land where she feels the warmth and inclusivity while recuperating physically and emotionally from her past.
As she enters Barrington tired and drained she encounters a kangaroo mob on the road and what she thought was a inconsiderate driver.
Her small car no match for a kangaroo.
Staying at Barrington Homestead she feels an instant connection to Rose and her husband Angus.
The town giving her a vibe of happiness as she encounters more locals in the Cafe.
A prolonged stay while the car is being repaired is the perfect antidote for connections and seek clarity on what fulfilment looks like for her.
Local farmer Drum is recovering from a marriage split and charting the future for his young daughter.
Respected locally and proud of his family legacy he is wary of having his heart broken again.
Harriet not only felt like the community were her people, she started to see opportunities to build a new life.
Falling in love with a derelict cottage and buying it was an impulsive but great decision until she discovered her neighbour Drum had always wanted to buy it back.
As relationships forge, droughts continue and fires threaten she becomes very local but still has emotional baggage to unburden and scars that will be revealed if she opens her heart.
The essence of realness is captured in every sense in this beautifully written story, it had so many elements of rural life reflected and social intricacies explored.
This is not just a rural romance it has a lot more substance which makes reading this author rewarding.
A highly recommended read.

A Place to Start Over by Susan Mackie (Barrington Book Two)

From the author of Charlie's Will A wonderfully engaging and superb read!

I loved everything about this heartwarming book, the wonderful small town community, women’s friendships, brewing romances, farm happenings, mystery and charming characters. After reading this I feel like I too want to live in a small rural town.

Harriet (Harri) Russell is healing from a traumatic attack and is leaving Sydney for a new life. She has a business plan ready and is in for a long drive heading North where she’s booked in for a stay at the Barrington Homestead.

After an unexpected incident on the road with a kangaroo she meets cattle farmer Drummond (Drum) Murray who comes to her aid but although helpful he’s not so friendly.

With her ‘Alfie’ Romeo Giulietta out of action she stays in Barrington longer than planned but falls in love with the town and the community there.

I adored Harri’s growing friendship with Billie, who is Drum’s young daughter, it was really special. Will Harriet stay in town or will someone drive her away?

Harri is the perfect protagonist and you can’t help but be charmed and inspired by her. It was also lovely to revisit some of the characters from the authors previous book Charlie’s Will.

I love Susan’s writing style, she manages to pull you into the story so deeply that you forget everything around you. Absolutely fabulous characters and storyline and I can’t wait to visit Barrington again for another tale!

First up, I wish to thank Susan for gifting me the ENTIRE Barrington series! I'm sure there's many happy hours of reading ahead!

Now to the review of Book 2, A Place to Start Over.

As I was already familiar with Barrington and her residents, I felt immediately at ease. It was great to catch up with those who I've met before and spend a bit of time with them.

Similarly, it was a real delight getting to know Harriet. She's a newbie to the area, deciding to put down roots after an incident with a roo halted her plans for a bit. The way she instantly became part of the woodwork and oh so loved by others gave me the warm and fuzzies. Harri certainly is 'my people', with a heart of gold despite overcoming some pretty harsh obstacles. Harri's ex never deserved her at all.

Another person who didn't deserve an ex is Drummond. Gawd, I wanted to give Annabelle a serve plenty of times during the course of my read. How dare she be using her daughter as a pawn for her own gain? Billie is such a sweet little girl and I'm glad that she has her Daddy and Harri in her corner.

I guess because of Annabelle's behaviour, Drum is a bit closed off at the thought of another romance. Yet, Drum's a goner at the sheer idea of anything developing between himself and Harri. Sure, he may come across as gruff, arrogant and insanely jealous, but those mannerisms just underlie how much he actually cares for her wellbeing.

Being part of a bit of a love triangle isn't making matters any better, hey Drum? Especially when you're competing with a mate. Not to worry. The adoration Harri has for Little Ben is nothing but platonic.

As mentioned, Harri is a great fit for the town. The plans she has to injiverate life back into the sleepy town are interesting and inspiring. I can't wait to see how they pan out over time.

The addition of the bonus chapters gave more depth to the characters and tied up some loose ends. I'm glad they were included as previously the story ended a bit too abruptly.

Such a sweet read!

A Place to Start Over is book two in the Barrington series by Susan Mackie. Harriet Russell wanted a change from Sydney, so she decided to move up north. On the way, she had a run-in with a kangaroo, and Drummond Murray arrived to help Harriet to find safety at Barrington B&B. Due to the damage to her car, Harriet Russell extended her time at Barrington B&B. The readers of A Place to Start Over will continue to follow Harriet Russell to find out what happens.

I have not read a book by Susan Mackie before reading A Place to Start Over, and I will differently change that in the future. I enjoyed reading this book so much that I sat down and read it twice. I love Susan Mackie's portrayal of her characters and the way they interact with each other throughout this book. A Place to Start Over is well written and researched by Susan Mackie. I like Susan Mackie's description of the settings of A Place to Start Over, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

The readers of A Place to Start Over will learn about pre-eclampsia and the seriousness of the conditions. Also, the readers of A Place to Start Over will understand the importance of advertising your business.

I recommend this book.

Love and Community how it should be

This book was absolutely awesome! I fell in love with each of the characters. A new Character Harriet was introduced, she was running from a terrible experience but found her happiness in the town of Barrington. The small town of Barrington once again pulls together through trials and triumphs to make friendships and relationships of love lasting ones. Together with friends on your side anything can happen. This pulled at my heart more than a few times . I felt like I was a part of this wonderful community and seeing everything happen right before my eyes. If you want to experience the highs and lows of this community then I highly recommend this book and the series. I can't wait to explore the next book.

Recently I read Charlie’s Will by Susan Mackie. When I saw Starting Over was available I wanted to read more about Barrington and the characters I love. Susan’s descriptions of the place and the people add to the story telling. For Drum one shouldn’t presume on first appearances. Great story about friends caring for each other. Look forward to reading more about Barrington!

Good book

This is a good book, there are several mistakes in it but it's it's still good. Can you find any mistakes? Look for wrong words (like their instead of there), time line discrepancies, characters sex changing back and forth, etc.

A Place to Start Over - Susan Mackie
Book 2 in the Barrington Series

This book came into my life like a breath of fresh air, just as Harriet walks into the town of Barrington.

Harriet intends to leave Sydney and stay at Barrington Homestead on her way North. What she doesn't intend to do is hit a roo and stay in Barrington whilst her car is being fixed. The town and characters are positively charming. Harriet falls in love with the place and the locals, just as I did. A Place to Start Over took me on a cozy wander through country homesteads with horses and cows, bushland, rivers and a small town with character oozing from every aspect. I felt welcomed and part of the community myself. Harriet arrived in the most ideal town for her.

The characters are kindhearted and delightful. Drummond, who is there to assist Harriet when she hits the kangaroo with her car, helps her to feel comfortable, offering her his car whilst in town. Rose and Angus, owners of the Barrington Homestead offer a place to stay and true friendhship. Laura, a local farmer and recluse opens up to Harriet and we then delve deeper into Harriet's story too.

Harriet assists Deb in the cafe and Ben Evans in his real estate business. Her ideas are fresh and she starts to feel valued, in contrast to her time in Sydney where she felt anything but. I love how Harriet's confidence increases as she assists the local people and is appreciated for who she is. Harriet is the perfect protagonist. She is a strong female character whose ambition and openness to change leads to a true home.

A Place to Start Over is a must read! I took time out to enjoy this novel of community, change and friendship. Susan Mackie's writing is warm, welcoming and thoughtful, just as her characters are.

“A Place to Start Over”, Wow another great story, just love the Barrington community, friendly, caring and supportive people who are always there for each other.
A beautiful story of Harriet Russell (Harri to her friends), leaving Sydney she has packed her little car, plans to stay at Barrington Homestead for one night. Driving on a dark unfamiliar country road, Harriet hits a Kangaroo, Drummond Murray (Drum to his friends) was travelling behind her and stops offers her assistance to get to her accommodation, as a true gentleman he arrangements for her car to be looked at in town in the morning.
Harriet is not looking to stay in Barrington but with her car taking longer than she hoped, next morning she stops in a local café and from then on a series of events and people she meets changes her mind and she soon sees the value of this small town; not only does this change her life, but she changes lives of people she meets. Feeling needed and the ever-growing sense of belonging and community, Harriet wonders if this might the right place for her.
It is a beautiful page turning story full of romance, sparks and warm characters, creating a true picture in my mind. A great storyline leaving you wanting more.

A recent trauma and disappointments in her life, pushes Harriet Russell to reassess everything. From her life in Sydney, she decides to move on to find her own place to start over. Some time spent in the delightful township of Barrington, is extended when life experiences, mainly other people's experiences, causes Harriet to stay longer before moving on to find her place in the world.

This is a delightful story by Susan Mackie, the second in her Barrington series. Country bred myself, I can easily identify with the characters in this story and know certainly that country people are the heart and soul of Australia.

I loved this book as I loved the first one, Charlie's Will, and I highly recommend both books to other readers. Thank you Susan for my copy and I look forward to the next episode of life in Barrington.

I adored Charlie’s Will (Barrington book #1) so I was overjoyed to be gifted this copy by Susan herself (for our book club) .. it was fabulous to revisit the characters from book #1 and delve into this next chapter.. With strong lead character Harriet at the fore we follow her story .. having left Sydney after a broken marriage and an accident with only her laptop and her Alfa Romeo car Alfie, Harriet hits a kangaroo and damages her car which leads her to having a prolonged stay in Barrington waiting for parts. There she will start strong friendships and perhaps find love ? This is definitely not a rural romance (a genre I tend to shy away from) but a beautiful atmospheric tale of starting over and finding happiness.. 5 shining stars ⭐️ from me

The second in a three-book series, this is much better edited and easier to read. Although there is no mystery as in the first book, the central character in this story has a somewhat mysterious past.

Harriet is headed to Barrington when she strikes a kangaroo at dusk, wrecking her car. She is rescued by Drummond Murray, a local rancher. As she waits for her car to be repaired, she finds friendships she didn't expect and a sense of belonging that had been lacking in her life in Sydney. She gradually reveals bits of her past to these new friends, achieving a certain catharsis, and finds the real meaning of a community. Oh yeah, there is budding romance, too! A great cozy read.

Harriet drives into Barrington late at night and damages her car by hitting a kangaroo.

She has had a rough time in the city and would like to start new.

Circumstances at a local cafe see her with a part-time job. Stay at Barrington homestead she slowly starts making friends and decides to stay.

The town folk are amazed how talented she is, and she, in return, feels needed.

You meet more of Barringtons townspeople, and connections are made.

Loved getting further into this series.

I'm really enjoying this series so far, this one introduces us to Harriet. She's looking for a new start after her marriage ended and finds herself at Barrington.

I love her friendship with Billie and Drummond. Harriet is easy going but with her own story to tell, when the time is right. I like how easily she got on with the Barrington residents. She has a lot to offer them and finds her place in the town.

I'm excited to see where this series goes, I've really enjoying meeting the townspeople and looking forward to seeing where it goes.

I like how the stories have already intertwined and mentions people from the previous books. Look forward to knowing more about them and maybe meeting some more!

'A Place to Start Over' - Barrington Book Two is beautiful rural story. Moving on from big city life and trauma, to stumble into a place that needed you, as much you need it. The sense of belonging and community is is abundant thought-out this book with a sprinkle of romance.

Harriet Russell has packed up her little car, leaving Sydney in her rearview mirror on her way north. She planned a night a Barrington B&B, while driving the dark unfamiliar country roads she hits a kangaroo. Here she meets local farmer Drummond Murray fifth generation local. Lacking obvious warmth in their greeting, he has manners like a true gentleman offering her assistance to her accommodation of the night. Well also making arrangements to get her car looked at in town in the morning.

Harriet isn't looking for romance, she is keen to continue her travel north. With her car taking longer than she hoped, she stop in a local café. Here events conspire leaving Harriet to lead a hand. With jammed packed list of locals and new friendships and opportunities around every corner. Feeling needed and the ever growing sense of belonging and community Harriet wonders if this might the right place for her.

You don't need to read the first book 'Charlie's Will' however the same characters appear within this story line. There is a connection between the two books though the characters, and place Barrington, so while don't need to read ' Charlie 's Will' I would recommend it.

'A Place to Start Over' makes me want to sell up and move my husband and 4 kids further into rural Australia. To find a community and sense of belonging I found within this book. This book is an easy read and will have you turning the pages quickly, while you remind yourself, to saver each sentence, so you don't finish it too quickly.
