"A drug addict is attacked during the early hours of the morning on the railway tracks near Churchgate station, which leaves a number of attackers dead and the junkie barely holding on to his life as he is brought to the government hospital and is kept under close guard. A reporter is given the story to cover. Initially unmotivated by what she thinks is just a waste of time, a meeting with one of the hospital staff, who gives her a photograph, makes her realise that there is lot more to the attack than what meets the eye. As she unsuccessfully searches for clues, she eventually arrives at a run-down bar in the heart of Colaba market and begins the interview of the resident, the in-house drunk, who might have some answers. What follows is a story of Bombay and the underworld, looked at from an angle that the reporter never thought existed. Through a haze of cigarettes and beer, the alcoholic weaves an impossible tale, as it becomes clear that the junkie in the hospital has been targeted for termination by the police assigned to protect him, and the reporter realizes that she is in a race against time to find the answers that might save his life. Through twists and turns the reporter is taken on a mind-bending journey that starts in the south Bombay neighbourhood of Colaba and moves through the battlefields of the Iran-Iraq war of the 80s, to the Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka and the communal riots in Bombay during the 90s, and tells the extraordinary story of Wastra, a figure of legend and smoke and mirrors. As the story reaches an explosive climax, the reporter finds that the sting in the tale might be more than what she bargained for, as the shades are pulled aside and she faces an unenviable choice."
I heart thrillers, and this book has kept me on track. It is a crime thriller.
The plot of the book is set in the backdrop of Mumbai. The storyline follows a journalist who is investigating a case in which a drug addict was attacked in broad daylight at Churchgate station. The story's pace is determined in the first few chapters, which develop suspense and mystery.
The lines are laced with Hindi phrases and accents, giving the drama a realistic sense. The characters in this work have good character development, and their backstories are neatly integrated into the plot.
The city of Bombay is described in great detail. Although there are a lot of details which might leave the reader perplexed. The suspense, on the other hand, was very intriguing and kept me hooked.
Book name- Wastra Author- Rohan Kailasam . . -Drawing a clear picture of 90s Bombay, this crime thriller revolves around an attack on a drug addict, with journalist Shalini Shanmugam investigating the entire case. This book takes us to an era when the city was infested with such notorious activities and brings in light the darkness of the underworld happenings.
-As the plot progresses, we find Shalini taking over the case and go in search of the truth quite fearlessly. However simple it might sound, it actually isn’t. There are a lot of subplots (with twist and turns) in this book, with a lot a characters, that might leave you confused at times.
-Having said that, I would also like to mention that the writing style was mature and gripping, and easy to comprehend.
-The plot progresses at a good pace, with a lot of events occurring, enough to capture a reader’s attention.
-The frequent use of local terms brings in a Bollywood kind of vibe at times, with action and thriller running parallelly, making it a good combo for crime-thriller lovers. But I would not recommend it to beginners. Go for it, only if you have explored this genre before.

Mumbai, a city of dreams. In the city where people from different parts of the world come to achieve their dreams, this city has some drawbacks also. There are some activities which created the buzz around the 80's and 90's. This book which is set during that era talks about the underworld and drugs racket etc.
The story starts with a very disturbing scene in which a drug addict Babu was being brutally killed. The police also encountered the rival gang and killed most of them. Shalini Shanmugam, a crime journalist was assigned to solve this case. She finds some links to the case and goes to meet a person who can brief her about Babu and his past history. The whole story which is narrated by that person recalling each and every event of the long forgotten war of Iraq, a dreaded rebel organization, the Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka and religious riot which happened during the 80's and 90's. Shalini was shocked to know about those mysterious events. Will she be able to solve the case and find out who is Wastra? Will she be able to connect the dots of all these events and Babu's murder? Read this book to know more.
The story is full of twists and turns. The narration and plot is very engaging which will keep you hooked till the end. I liked how the author has connected each event to the other without making readers confused. It felt like watching a Bollywood crime action movie with lots of drama. The story will surely give you vibes of the 80's era and the places of Mumbai.
The only thing which I find confusing is too many characters. At some point, I had to go back and check the characters connection to the case. Otherwise an action packed crime thriller book.

The story held me in a tight grip right from the start and the twist was something I couldn't have seen coming. This was such a refreshing read from my past months! And definitely gave me Once Upon a Time in Mumbai feels, but the story was way better. The story is set in my favourite city and I loved how at home I felt.
The writing felt a teeny tiny bit repetitive to me and it got confusing with the long paragraphs. I did not like the objectification of women. But I also get that it's part of the whole story so I took it with a pinch of salt. It
I would definitely want to read this story to unwind and just go through an exciting time solving crimes. Mafia and Gangs seem to do that for me.

The guy Digyen Burmah, is really interesting. Do you want to know why? Because he is a forensic auditor and also a corporate spy. Now his story will present before us some pretty crazy and dangerous adventures. He comes across a case where his old friend’s wife mysteriously disappeared. We have watched a lot of movies with plots around raids and income tax and the stories are truly interesting and mysterious. You can expect the same with this one. Now let me bring your attention to the author Smarak Swain. The author is an officer of Indian Revenue Services (IRS) and so he knows the system inside out. The storyline is promising and gets interesting after the first 50 pages. The language is beginners friendly and if you are worried that the book is a serious tone throughout because of all the income tax references and the jargon then you don’t have to worry about it. The story comes out as easy to understand and also the book is based on real events. It revolves around the famous Hawala case of 1991. Overall it’s a nice read. Happy reading!

The narrative kicks off with an action packed scene, setting the tone for a fast-paced journey through the rise of its protagonist, from a naive boy to the kingpin of Mumbai’s underworld. The author skillfully intertwines multiple subplots, seamlessly connecting them to the central narrative. This technique not only enhances the pace but also adds layers of depth to the storyline, keeping readers hooked until the very end. Characterization is another highlight of “Wastra”. The main and supporting characters are meticulously developed, each with their own intricate backstory that enriches the overall narrative. The climax of the story is particularly well-crafted, which the readers would not have anticipated. ✨When it comes to terror in India, Mumbai always wins. Since many decades, mumbai has been known most for the home of Underworld people and most terror cities in India. And during 90s, mumbai had the most cases reported out of few were resolved, and few were still left unsolved. ✨One such story about crime, thrills and mysteries is written in 80s and 90s. The story starts when a drug addict was found dead near railway tracks. A crime journalist, Shalini Shanmugam was assigned to solve this case. While imvestigating the mystery behind the murder, she found out that the murder was somehow connected to dark underworld of Bombay which opened up too many mysteries of 80s and 90s time such as killings of long forgotten war of Iraq, a dreaded rebel organization and religious riots in Bombay. And from here on the story takes many twists and turns, becomes more and more intense and thrilling. Will Shalini be able to untangle the pieces of the puzzles? How is this political, tamil tiger, Iran-Iraq war is connected with this murder?
✨The story justifies the thrilling genre. It was fast paced and contains enriched language and beautifully portrayed characters. It was divided into 17 chapters within almost 300 pages. It took much long to complete it but it was worth it. There were clues and too many events occuring which can keep the reader engaged from the start.
✨There wer few times in the books which were little boring sometimes but with time and slow reading it will be understandable. Also there were some events and dialogues which gave me those bollywood terror films. Also the ending was almost little predictable for me.
✨This book is recommended to all thriller lovers who want to experience good action packed thrills and some pain and voilence. I wouldn't recommend this book to beginners as it was too much political which might bore them.
"He heard them coming down the track ( railway track)." The book opens with the above quoted line, giving the Readers a hint that something fishy is cooking behind the curtain. Whenever we think of Bombay, our mind often finds an interdependency of the Underworld and Mumbai, Isn't? 🧐 In this very book, the aforementioned connection takes it role on the top. The Author deftly hunted a plot, filled with Suspense👀 + Action⚔ + Thriller ☠, where the beginning has left thrills into my nerves, when the Drug Addict, named Babu, encircled with a bunch of people around him, was murdered brutally, but before that we witness his outright courage and strength in the way, that resulted into the killing of most of the members of the Rival Gang, but eventually, he (Babu) was found dead near the railway track. It's here, that Shalini Shanmugam🕵♀️, Crime Journalist, was assigned to solve this extensively intermingled case, just like a barn. During her investigation, she underwent through fire and water, opening the layers of suspense and mystery, skimming into the darkest of risks, and it's then, that she found the subtle links of the case with the killings of Iran-Iraq War, Tamil Tigers in Srilanka and communal riots in Bombay.
A Reason to read this Book - Babu, the drug addict, who was murdered brutally on the railway track rises like a "Phoenix 🦜" during Shalini's intense investigation, and what happens next will keep you stuck in the story.
What I loved most about the book was how Rohan Kailasm skilfully pick up on subtle nuances of the case and unfolded it with the help of the superactive Journalist, Shalini Shanmugam. Though the ending is a total cliffhanger, leaving the story to plod on suspense.
All in all, without any complexity in narration and plot, the story keeps you engrossed and intrigue.
Wastra is a suspenseful, crime, dangerously mysterious story. It is primarily set in the 90s, in Bombay. It is divided into 17 long chapters. It is full of violence, murder, revenge, gang wars and betrayal. The story begins with violence. A murder happens by the railway lines and a crime investigator, Shalini Shanmugam is assigned to the case. As the investigation proceeds, it becomes clear to her that it wasn't just a normal case of a beggar getting attacked and also that it had something to do with the underworld mafia and most importantly with Wastra, the mafia king back then. As she continues with her investigation, she is met with Shinde. Shinde is a drunky who meets her in Saraswati bar. Shalini puts out a photo in front of him and starts to ask questions reagarding that. Shinde narrates her an entire, more than 12 hour long story, which is also 11 chapters long. Shinde is a master story teller. He begins with something that seems unrelated to the case but as he reaches the end of the story, all the puzzle pieces fall together. Events unfold slowly revealing the real story. The story was astonishingly a masterpiece. It was really fast paced and you will have to read each sentence carefully because so many facts, incidents have been packed in the entire book. The characters were merciless and extremely violent. The writing style is complex and not beginner friendly, and so it is perfect for readers like me. The story line narrated by Shinde was in coordination with real events happened in Bombay, thus making the story believable. I personally liked Wastra after he becomes the Underworld King. Also, I kind of expected the ending but it was still really a mind turning twist. And for the love of god, how many cigarettes did Shinde drink on daily basis??

If you like Bollywood style movies with twists and turns and lots of action, then this is THE book for you. Reading this book, I discovered that I like action in movies only, not in books. I don't know why but it doesn't impact me much. The story progression was good with lots of twists and turns and my knowledge about 90's Bombay underworld has increased 10 fold 😂. Maybe it will be turned into a movie soon 🤩.

🏵️Shalini Shanmugam ,a crime reporter has been assigned this case to find out the knits and grits of the whole scenario. As she dwells into the case, the layers of mysteries get unfolded. Plot is well conceptualised and very well written, you actually feel that you are watching some Bollywood movie. There are many twists and turns to read out for and I was just sold at the climax. It's surely a treat for any book lover. Highly recommended
The story starts when a junkie who was met with an accident is admitted to a hospital. Shalini, a crime reporter is asked to find the facts behind the case. That is where she meets an alcoholic who knew who the junkie was and his connection to Wastra. What then occured was a night long narration of Wastra's tale.
You might wonder who Wastra is. He is a legend, myth, and even a superpower who solely controlled the fate of many people in Bombay. But Shalini was unaware of this name and the night proved a way for her to know the dark past of Bombay.
This book was a great one. From the very beginning, I was curious to see how the junkie was connected to Wastra. Just like Shalini's journey to find the truth, I too was on this journey to find about Wastra. The alcoholic man who narrated the story made sure that the suspense would be maintained. As a result, I too was curious just like Shalini.
The best thing about this book was how the conversation between Shalini and the alcoholic felt so natural. He took time to build up the suspense and Shalini seemed to ask the same questions I had in my mind as a reader.
This book evoked curiosity and excitement in me through the tale of the underworld and Wastra, which was filled with adventure and thrill.

The story has a mysterious background and keeps us hanging with each chapter as we proceed. It has a wierd flavour of 90s Bombay as there are many historical tragedies that are involved in real life. Keeping that in account and bending the story was exceptional. The author made sure not to loose a single detail about the story. This book deserve a web series.

From the Iran-Iraq war to communal riots the author cooperated with a lot of topics in the story, which made its content majestic. The plot was well-developed with interesting characters. I really liked the writing style of the author, it is simply yet lucid. The story built up is not nice, that one can’t help but turn the pages. I don’t usually like crime thrillers, but I guess, this year introduced me to a lot of new genres. The mysterious back story along with historical strategies is the most interesting aspect of this story. So if you are a reader who loves edge gripping crime thrillers, this one is definitely for you.
“Wastra: Death Stalked the streets of Bombay” by Rohan Kailasam is a crime thriller that centres around a crime reporter named Shalini Shanmugam who is tasked to cover a story of an attack on drug addict, little does she know that this seemingly mundane task will not only change the course of her professional but also personal life.
Weaved keeping a sense of suspense, the story knocks every necessary door to invite baffling characters which not only make the story interesting but also enriches the literature. From the desk of common news room Shalini is thrown into the world of notorious politicians, feared gangsters, dreaded terrorists and self righteous freedom fighters leading to a mind boggling climax where much is at stake and choices are to be made.
Overall, it’s a perfect fast paced crime thriller with all the necessary elements to back up the plot. The easy and lucid language with which the characters and plot are drawn is amazing and keeps the readers hooked till the end. Loved how the author has imbibed every important event of 90s in sequential chain to make it more realistic and consumable. Would recommend it to anyone who loves crime thrillers!
