Adventures on Brad #9

A Royal Ending

Rate this book
Can An Adventurer and a Prince Be Friends?

And can a Prince be an Adventurer? Those questions consume Daniel and his team, as their newest member tries to fit in. It's not an easy job, not among a bunch of experienced Adventurers, not when the Prince is impetuous and impatient to prove himself.

More than that, as they train, political forces long held in abeyance move in the shadows and Daniel and his team will be caught up in the play. In the end, Daniel will have to ask himself, how much will he sacrifice for a friend and fellow Adventurer?

A Royal Ending is the final book in the Adventurers on Brad series, concluding the LitRPG young adult fantasy written by bestselling author Tao Wong. Author of the System Apocalypse and A Thousand Li series, the Adventures on Brad features a gifted healer, a Catkin, a Northern barbarian warrior and noble intrigues in a LitRPG-inspired fantasy world.

A very nice and satisfying ending to the Brad cycle with many good fights and a little touch of bittersweet at the end. As Tao confesses in the Author's note, this was his first series and has the problems of a first work but the last 3 books he wrote to close the cycle are very well written (you see the maturity there very mush like in A 1000 Li...).

Anyway; thank you Tao for NOT been that guy who leaves the early fans hanging there forever because he got bored of the series... and I remember that in Book 5 or 6 you hinted of a wider arc absorbing the Brad books...just go for it, we'll love it...

Thoroughly frustrating but enjoyable series.

Reading the author's note really does put the series in perspective for me.  As a reader and a hobby writer I can tell his progression in his ability to write a story as well as how the format of this series restricted him a bit. All nine stories of the series are appropriate for young adults and above. It is a little RPG focused on leveling and dungeon runs to some degree but with an overall world build that feels ready for a much more expensive story. It is a mix between third person limited and third person omniscient it feels. But no confusing head hopping can be seen and often there were breaks to make it obvious that the point of view has changed.

Were those who enjoy little RPG this has a good balance between the RPG elements and story. Though as much balance that you can get any short 50,000 word story that can be read in just a couple of hours. To be honest I would love to see the series expand more to novel linked quality books. Looking at Wong's Thousand Li series gives me hope that one day when he eventually comes back to this world and hopefully the same characters it is what we will get.

I don't want to get into spoilers for this last book. But it is well worth the read I feel considering the price and leave the time it will take to burn through all nine stories. The story I have no doubt Will call some rage with some readers. There is a circular nature to it that without additional stories to continue the journey will feel frustrating I have no doubt. At the same time it is a bittersweet poignant conclusion that leaves the reader wanting more and looking at what possibly could happen.

I've read a few different series where the author has taken time away to come back to it later. You can fill the narrative shift and even wonder if the author remembered some of the things he wrote previously. In this work a ring for example that hasn't been mentioned for five or six books comes back into play. My first thought was oh he remembered it or perhaps even reread the series itself.

To be blunt this is a quick popcorn series that just like a good action flick is meant to be enjoyed for what it is, and be returned to without too much complexity expected. There is a lot of gold in the series I think but the author I feel with his other works taking priority wanted to put a good cap on the series that would leave for a possible return in the far future.

There is no language in the series that would keep readers away and for the most part it keeps away from more modern social and political issues thankfully. It does leave the reader wanting more and I feel has the potential to become a good jumping off point for perhaps another series. I doubt the offer will come back to redo the stories as they are good and solid for what they are. But I can't see him turning this into a more literary journey than rpg.

The end?

So we see in this last volume a tying up of some loose ends...but other new threads that apparently will never be resolved.

Would i reread this series? Probably not the one I just finished. But a new edition, with refreshed story and a sequel series, perhaps.
Would I recommend it to others? Depends on the person. Not a younger person. Not someone similar to my background. But perhaps...

you rat bastard

An absolutely awesome ending. Spectacular. Moving and meaningful. Bringing a series to an end seems to be hard these days, so I am glad to see this one wrapping up and tying off loose ends.

Except for that. One. Reward.

Right at the end. “Unknown”.

sad to see it go

I hate it when a good series comes to a close - I always want to know what will come next. Tao is a great author. If you read this just know I teared up just a bit at the end. Kudos

I’m not crying you’re crying

This was an epic end to a fantastic tale. So sad and frustrating but satisfying. I hope there’s more to Daniel Chai’s story, that last notification was very mysterious.

A Good Ending

This is the last book in the series, or so the author says. I enjoyed the whole series and I’m happy with how the series ends.

What an absolutely shitty, cop-out ending to an otherwise half-way decent adventuring series. Flushed the entire thing down the toilet.

Let me start by saying 5 of 5. I am very pleased by the conclusion of this series.
Tao Wong, concluded this portion of the story about the main character and his gift, and in the end returned the character to what he wanted to be at the start of the series an Adventurer. The conclusion did not feel like he hurried the story forward, tossed in totally unnecessary combat (which I feel he has done in another series (Li)), or just got bored and went Boom, its over.
I did feel that he was trolling his readers though, when he added the line: Hidden Quest Achieved, Reward: Unknown. Book Ends. And then the author note of, Ill be back to this at some point, maybe? (Paraphrasing)
