H.P. Lovecraft – Horror Stories Vol. I

Rate this book
This way lies monsters and madness. Because you’re about to enter the imagination of H.P. Lovecraft. A master of the short story form, Lovecraft made the unknowable scarily real. Parallel universes, alien worlds, vengeful spirits—all realised in the space of a few pages. And all brought to life with spare, simple language, making Lovecraft’s fiction an easy read for modern audiences. This volume contains five of his short stories:
"The Horror at Martin’s Beach"
"The Nameless City"
"The Ghost Eater"
"The Crawling Chaos" and
"The Doom that Came to Sarnath".

It’s an essential collection for fans of otherworldly horror. H.P. Lovecraft was an American horror and science fiction writer. Born in Rhode Island, he became a pioneer of ‘cosmic horror’, conjuring up a lore of supernatural creatures who exist beyond our understanding. His best known stories include "The Call of Cthulhu", "At the Mountains of Madness" and "The Colour Out of Space". While he was a mainstay of pulp magazines, Lovecraft never achieved wider literary recognition in his lifetime. But his posthumous influence has been profound. It can be found in everything from the fiction of Stephen King and Neil Gaiman to the HBO series "Lovecraft Country".

Howard Phillips Lovecraft, of Providence, Rhode Island, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction.

Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity. Lovecraft's protagonists usually achieve the mirror-opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality.

Although Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life, his reputation has grown over the decades. He is now commonly regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting widespread and indirect influence, and frequently compared to Edgar Allan Poe.

A collection with the short stories "The Horror at Martin's Beach", "The Nameless City", "The Ghost Eater", "The Crawling Chaos", and "The Doom That Came to Sarnath".

The best part of this collection of horror stories was the narrator and the sound effects. Since it's been a couple of days I actually only remember "The Ghost Eater". On the other hand it was really good, and a bit scary. I think I was too unfocused during the other stories, and it would probably have been better to take a break between each story, instead of listening to them all at once.

The Ghost Eater ***
The Nameless City **
The Crawling Chaos **
The Horror at Martin’s Beach **.5
The Doom that Came to Sarnath **

The music and other sounds help set an eerie tone. However, often there were sounds that were superfluous, distracting me from the story. The stories didn’t make a lasting impression; already I’m having trouble remembering what they were about.
Narration **.5

A collection of five horror stories.
The Ghost Eater: a stranger in a small Maine town must venture through treacherous woods, and soon finds himself face to face with a monster.
The Nameless City: in search of riches, a man descends down the tunnels of a pyramid, but riches he does not find among the darkness.
The Crawling Chaos: the twisted, inner workings of the mind high on opium.
The Horror at Martin's Beach: with the sound drowning screams, locals on beach jump into action - only to find themselves facing an unspeakable evil.
The Doom That Came to Sarnath: the tragic tale of a once beautiful city that has disappeared.

I really enjoyed The Ghost Eater, The Nameless City and The Crawling Choas. Who doesn't like a monster-in-the-woods kind of story? The Nameless City and The Crawling Chaos were a deep. Facing the consequences we put ourselves in. Both from different perspectives.
The Horror at Martin's Beach was ok, but felt a bit dull. Lacking in depth.
The Doom That Came to Sarnath was too damn wordy. I kept having to back track and re-read paragraphs.
None of them scared me, or remotely freaked me out. They made me think about certain situations and how it would feel to be in that position, but not enough to really intrigue me.
