The Raven And The Crow: Dark Storm Rising

Rate this book
Two brothers struggling to find their place in the world.

For the elder sibling Kildare, every morning begins with the memory of betrayal. Once governed by the principles of morality, Kildare has become an instrument of blood and steel—where the speed of his sword arm metes out his own brand of justice. Only the strength and resolve of his brother Zedaine keeps him from succumbing to the ever-present rage that burns behind his dark eyes. While employed by the mysterious sage Blade, the pair stumble upon Chameleon, a runaway tribeswoman displaying extraordinary psychic powers. Their meeting, however, is no chance encounter. A riddle Chameleon carries will change not only the future of the three, but the fate of the entire world.

Hundreds of miles away, Macklore, a powerful wizard of Brisbane, has been dispatched to the volatile city of Gallanse. Smitten at the sight of princess Lydia, Macklore defies his orders and finds himself thrust into the middle of a bloody succession. When he openly supports Lydia’s family, he is marked for death by a cult of magi working to raise the psychotic prince Dragomir to the throne. With few allies, Macklore must use his wits and innate magical powers to keep Dragomir from the crown and himself alive.

Racing towards Gallanse, Kildare and Zedaine are torn between saving Macklore’s life, extracting terrible vengeance upon the man responsible for their betrayal.

I grew up in upstate New York and I've been interested in writing since I was in grade school. I published my first novel in April of 2020. I have been an educator for the last 22 years teaching and coaching many different topics and sports. When I'm not working I greatly enjoy the outdoors, whether it's hiking near Lake Tahoe, or snowshoeing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Autumn is my favorite season and walking among the fallen leaves early in the morning makes getting up everyday worthwhile.

4-stars.

This was a good read and has given me a little boost. His writing style is more like the authors that I have enjoyed reading in the past; authors like Raymond E Feist, and David Gemmell.

The only negative I had from this book were the typos and the widow-orphans, (which is to do with the page set-up when working in word processing). It basically means that the pages finish at odd places in a printed book, which can be a little misleading if you think a chapter is finished only to turn the page and discover that it hasn't.

Michael K Falciani is an indie-author and I would recommend giving his work a try.

Two brothers struggling with their place in an ever changing world of political dealings, into this comes a young tribeswoman with an amazing gift. Along with a Princess and a powerful mage.
This is a wonderful accomplished debut epic fantasy novel.
The characters are well written, believable and well rounded especially the brothers, they're interaction was a joy to read and you cannot help but like them, they are soon swept up in events and need all their skill and courage to survive. This is a large world, stuffed to the brim with fantastic creatures, political intrigued and characters to both love and hate. The pacing was perfect and at no point did this drag, the story felt organic and had all the elements of a series that could grow into something very special. I both enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.

A definite intriguing story that had me hooked from the beginning. There’s no way, anyone won’t love it. First time with this author, not the last by any means.

Magnificent!

Dark Storm Rising is a magnificent tale full of magic and adventure. Political disputes are balanced with intrigue, epic duals with comedy. There is not one second in this book where you are bored. The author has crafted a story that has you turning the pages, always craving more. Is it possible to have three favorite characters in one book? I just can’t choose one over the other! Macklore, Zedaine and Kildare stole my heart. And the best part? There is more to come in book two. I’m eagerly awaiting its release in just a few days.

An impressive debut novel. This is a very good story and a world I'd like to see more of, but the real strength of the book lies in the interactions between characters; all the central figures have satisfying personalities and a depth I enjoyed. Their interactions are fun to read and escape the cookie-cutter stereotypes of many fantasy stories, with sharp dialogue and an edge to them; particularly between the brothers at the heart of the story. Falciani has obviously spent time thinking about his characters and their relationships with each other, and you feel each individual has their own story worth exploring. I hope that some day we have the opportunity to do so. Recommended!

Dark Storm Rising is a mysterious adventure that has every element you need in a fantasy. Magic, danger, love, gorgeous men, political warfare and a princess. I loved Macklore, he was my favorite character always wanting to do what was right, no matter the cost. But I also enjoyed Zedaine and Kildare, the gorgeous brothers who somehow command every scene they are in with just a look. Zedaine is the comedy relief in this tale, keeping the mood light when his more serious brother gets frazzled. This is a wonderful fantasy story that will be enjoyed by all.

Great story and some really awesome characters but this whole instant love thing between Macklore and the princess is a no go for me. I hate instant love. Other than that little rant, Kildare and Zee are my favorites. Those two are badasses and I enjoy every moment of their chapters. Macklore is a badass when he is not with the princess. That is only my opinion though so if you enjoy insta love and all that than this is for you.

Good Read!

Its a fast paced novel with good character development and world building. Very fast paced with lots of action, suspense, and an evil sorcerer thrown in the mix.

The story starts with our characters meeting in the shadows, much like we, the reader, are also in the shadows about what's going on. We are introduced to two brothers, one quick to anger (relatable) and another more reasonable. The brothers are hired by a Sage, who we quickly learn has no time for the irritated short tempered brother, who isn’t up to taking on the task she offers. The story begins to open during their meeting when they're interrupted by an assassin who tried to kill them. At first, we are led to believe the assassin was after the Sage, but it soon becomes clear that it is the Brothers, the Raven, and the Crow, who were the targets. After realising their fate, the brothers accept a quest from the sage to go to a perilous place to fetch a flower of great importance...

Although there are two sides to our story. In the next chapter, we switch POVs, and we are introduced to Dragomir and learn about the politics that are in play in our fantasy world. The most pressing being the upcoming battle to the throne. The throne that can only be won through the power of persuasion, not brute strength due to a peace treaty that all Lords of ascension have signed. We learn a lot about Dragomir quite quickly, and none of it is good.

Not only is he an ill-tempered youth who also needs a lesson on how to talk about women, but he is also a petulant little man who will not take heed of any smart advice. Dragomir is clearly leading up to being my villain, and I wouldn't mind if he lost his seat or his head. In fact, if he doesn’t end up dead in a ditch by the end of the series, I will be rioting. And yes, all of these opinions came from the first few chapters in the book. As Dragomir's story evolves, we are introduced to evil incarnate Eliphas, a demon magi who makes quite the fiery entrance. IYKYK! The uncumberson Lord and his demon magi are the dark power rising that the dark bird brothers are trying to stop. They just don’t know it yet.

I usually like to go in blind to books without reading the blurb. This way, I can really commit to the author's storytelling, and I can enjoy the plot development as it unfolds. I often do the same with films because trailers show all the best bits. But on this count, I should have read the blurb first. As I read the first few chapters, I felt a little lost. I do feel like we, as the reader, could benefit from a bit more world building. I had to go back and re-read 2 chapters to make sure I was getting the right idea of where the story was going and how it was connected via locations made. After about 5 chapters I did go back to the amazon store page and read the blurb, I was unsure I would continue reading the whole book until then, but the blurb filled some gaps and that made everything click into place.

I’m not the best at picturing people as unique characters, and more often than not, I picture celebs as the characters that I think fit the description. The best part about reading, for me, is watching the book in my head like a movie as I read. But as we are introduced to new characters, we aren't given much character description. Sometimes, we wouldn’t get any physical description at all, which at first I didn’t like. But then side characters came in, and as they met our main cast, we were given the description through their eyes. Which, for me, is a first. I can’t actually think of another book with that writing style, but once I knew it was coming and got used to it, it was fun. Every time I thought ‘hmm i’m not sure I like this’ I was proven wrong by Falciani. Particularly when it came to the introduction of Macklore.

Macklore is the type of man I’d get down on my knees and bark at like a dog for (sorry mum.) When I tell you my jaw was on the floor, I was fist bumping the air, dancing in my bed excited with his dialogue. It was something stupid like 2am, and I had no one awake to tell, I thought I was going to explode, so I messaged the author back, threatening to throw hands if anything bad happens to Macklore

Macklore might be one of the best male characters I've ever had the pleasure of reading. The way he spoke to Dragomir was sensational, inspired, and simply phenomenal. If this book ever gets cast into a film or TV show, that scene would win awards. When I review a book, I make notes as I go along, which I then revert back to when I type the full review. But I’m just going to put in what I wrote then at 2am, because I don’t think I can say it any better:

“A shout out for Macklore, 10/10 I’m WEAK.” (Stasia Roze, 2am version)

Know that I am not lying when I say that this book is extremely well written. Both the author and the editor have done an amazing job. The pacing is excellent, at no point as the reader are we bored or wanting to skip ahead, a usual bad trait of mine. Page to page it just kept going and getting stronger. The way that Falciani writes dialogue at times of conflict should be studied by every aspiring author. There were times I wanted to clap at the comebacks made by the characters and deliverance of his dialogue. The connection it gives between the character and the reader is nothing short of exhilarating joy.

The brothers' relationship (Raven and Crow) is beautifully done as well, they are the yin and yang of each other. The way they flow through a conversation as one, on the same page and agreeing to then having little spats is the essence of brotherhood. Every side character is well thought out and written well, even if they only get 2 pages of life, they're still strong and you still connect to them. Falciani even manages to make you feel emotionally connected to characters that you’ve never met alive, but the character has, no name left unexplored.

If this book doesn’t make it to the screen, it would be a travesty. Game of Thrones took me years to get into the book, I think I DNF’d it about 10 times before actually committing. This book out classes GOT in so many ways. This book will honestly stick with me, I just hope book two in the series lives up to the hype of book one! At the end of the story it was an instant 5 stars. Get it for yourself, your family, and your friends.

This review was requested by the Author, but please know this is a completely honest and unbiased review, you can even ask my mum as I talked her ear off about this book every step of the way.

I picked this up on a recommendation from a friend and I am so glad I did. I don't usually read fantasy, but what an action packed story, filled with adventure! The character development was incredibly well done and I was impressed at the world this author created. It had action, mystery, political intrigue and the author sprinkled humor throughout with a deft touch. I thoroughly enjoyed myself while reading this novel and eagerly await the sequel! Five stars!

Well, I stayed up until almost 2 am to finish reading the book, and then immediately ordered the next two from Barnes & Noble. I can't really pay a book any higher compliment than doing damage to both my sleep and financial health in pursuit of its conclusion. Dark Storm Rising just kept getting better.
Despite multiple strong hooks built into the plot from the get-go, including a mysterious assassin, a quest for a life-saving flower, and a murderous mage out for blood and power, the book has somewhat of a slow start. I was curious, absolutely, and wanted to see how it turned out. I was hooked enough to want to keep reading. But the characters all hold their cards close to their chests, and some main characters don't get introduced until much later in the story. Since I didn't feel connected to the characters right off the bat, I wasn't worried about whatever danger they might be in. I wasn't invested.
That said, Falciani completely hooked me as I got to know the characters better. It happens very gradually. No one in this novel is willing to give an inch. By the end, everyone is still a mystery... but they're lovable mysteries. Their personalities come through brilliantly. There are one or two places where someone seemed out of character (there's a particularly drawn out scene where Kildare, the 'clever' one, seems almost deliberately obtuse), but all in all I was quite impressed with the depth of Falciani's characters.
Falciani breathes life into an entire world. The sheer number of kingdoms, cities, landmarks, and people are incredible, but what makes them standout is how real they are. Falciani shows us these places and people experiencing life. Not just the action, not just the fantastical details, but the things that tend to get overlooked. A childhood nemesis turned coworker. A rivalry between fruit-sellers at the market. Seasickness. We encounter parts of the Crystalline Sea that even the heroes overlook. It's truly an immersive experience, and never boring.
By the end of the book, my one frustration is that Falciani is utterly ruthless and completely leaves us hanging. Throughout the story, there are many, many mysteries hinted at. Little clues that leave you guessing, thinking you're on the right track but not quite sure. With so many mysteries looming, you'd think Falciani could spare one and throw us a bone by the end of the book... but no. None of the major questions get answered. Ruthless.
Overall, this is an excellent read, and one I would recommend to anyone who loves fantasy. It's easy to get drawn in, and delightful to uncover the brutal world of violence and political intrigue Falciani has crafted.

Kaldare and Zedaine were hired by a powerful mage to travel to the mountains and get a rare flower. While there they run into a woman from a secluded tribe having visions that include them. Now, the trio must race to Gallanse to stop a murder.

I received a copy of this audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review. This book has a lot of action, fantasy, and adventure. This is very firmly not smut. Although there is still murder in it. Only giving this disclaimer because of how many books I have been reading recently that are. That being said I loved this book.

This book is largely character introductions and establishing backstory. But, even with that being said there are countless battles the brothers and other characters participate in. From attacks in the forest, a crazy girl literally jumping onto their ship, and a competition in a town where they own a brothel there is always something going on.

The story is active, engaging, and thoroughly enjoyable. I loved the characters and their development as the story progressed, especially Wanderer. The scene where she travels to another plane in her mind and meets up with someone was very exciting, mysterious, and a little foreboding. Can't wait to see what happens there.

I largely enjoyed the narration. I do think this would be one of those books best read as a physical or even an eBook versus audiobook only because of how often perspective changes. It often took me a few minutes to determine where we were, be it the princess and the murder plot or with the brothers and their adventures. This is my only complaint on this book, but it's more of a narration problem than with the story and I would absolutely read more by this author in the future. Warning. This book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger.

I really enjoyed this book. I bought it directly from the author at the Shasta Renaissance festival and read 145 pages the night of the festival. I set it down for the work week and picked it back up on Sunday and flew through 450 pages like they were nothing! I really enjoyed how the author told the story. Some chapters begin with perspectives of side characters that interact with the main characters after you have a short introduction to the side character. Through this literary tool, Falciani was able to expand on some of the minutia of everyday life for people like guardsmen, apothecaries, ruffians, and bartenders in this world. I thought it was a very unique and cool way to do the world building and I very much enjoyed it. Overall, the pacing of the story was great. The way the overall quest is slowly pulled together and incorporates all the side quests that the main characters have to go on kept me interested. I am very much looking forward to reading the next installment. So thank you Michael Falciani for recommending that I pick up the second one along with the first!

One thing I wasn't a huge fan of was how quickly two of the characters fall for each other. I'm just not a big fan of the love at first sight trope. Another thing I was not a big fan of was that the main characters are all strong and perfect men with hardly any flaws (apart from being extremely confident). I would have liked to see the female characters being just as strong and flawless as the men. However, in this first book it seems like the females are timid and all are unsure of themselves. I am hoping that the second book will show the female characters, specifically Chameleon and Lydia, growing into their powers and becoming strong main characters.

Book 205/250 for the year goal, is done. This book is epic! Epic Fantasy, epically and masterfully written, the plot is woven with meticulous world building and expert crafting. I could not put it down. I’m adding this to my list of infinity ✨ reads.

I already own a physical copy (signed even, albeit addressed to someone else) that I picked up at Browsers Corner Bookstore for my trophy shelf, but now I’m going to need the two additional ones in the series as well (I think it’s a trilogy).

The really cool part of this one, is the author, Michael K. Falciani is a Carson City local!

The three books I see in this series are also available on kindle unlimited and Amazon. I highly recommend! Also, shout out to Rebecca Feldermann for recommending this one to me!

(And as a note, this series is NOT smut or a Romantasy, but epic fantasy! I know, I know, I read a lot of Romantasy, but my love at that subgenre stems from my love of the rich, epic fantasies first! This one does a bit of romance in it, but not the spice. What is does have is antiheroe, amazing world building, a detailed universe, mystery, magic, swordsman, and good versus evil and a quest that is Tolkien-esqe!)

A unique story of deep intrigue, adventure, magic and mystery. Just when you get comfortable with one set of characters and their adventure, and start to figure out what they’re up to, you’re suddenly thrust into a new place, with new characters, conflict, and adventure. Each one draws you in deeper, and you become connected to them all, as they become intertwined with each other. I felt there was an excellent balance of action, intrigue, and adventure, and emotions throughout the book. I also felt that it was the interactions/conversations between everyone that carried the story, made it soar. I enjoyed the twists and turns throughout as well. My heart started racing toward the end in anticipation, and before I knew it, I came upon the all-too-familiar feeling of dread as I flipped to the final page. Thankfully, it’s not the end! I’m already looking forward to reading the second book in the series. I have a feeling it’ll be another thrilling ride.

A classic story told excellently

The best word to sum up this nascent series is “fun.”

The story was fun to read and I’m guessing it was fun to write. While some of the overarching plot took shape, the chief draw is the characters. The devil is in the details and the main cast are people I wanted to spend time with and still do - so here’s shopping the next installment comes soon.

The novel started in the midst of the action and all the characters come to us with a surfeit of baggage, past battles and past betrayals, not fully explored at first, but hints are dropped throughout.

There are also plenty of enjoyable narrative flourishes. The trick of introducing a new character by having them meet one of the main protagonists and see them through new eyes was particularly enjoyable, and even in a fight where the outcome was a foregone conclusion, there were some intriguing revelations.

Highly recommended.

I loved this book. It’s a great young adult fiction that keeps you guessing. Just when I think I figured it out there is a new twist. I hate that I don’t have the second book yet to continue the story.

I will say this book changes characters and perspectives often. Most times I hate stories like that as it can be hard to follow who was talking and what was happening. This book was totally different all the perspectives mesh and link back to each other in a great way. There is enough background to keep your attention and yet still give you more surprises. I highly recommend this fantasy book. I do wish there was a map in the back of the book to help connect all the areas in this world.

The story was entertaining enough that I didn't DNF which I think speaks to the quality of writing. The plot was riveting and the character Lydia was relatable and strong.
The main characters were too perfect and the side characters didn't partake in the story but filled half of the book being introduced. There was some cringy dialog between the brothers and long obvious exposition poorly hidden in dialog.
The ending was the best part bringing the villian from strawman antagonist to the intelligent fearsome threat the story portrayed him as.
I probably won't read the remainder of the series but think anyone new to fantasy might enjoy it.

I picked this book up at a craft fair and wasn't expecting to like it but got drawn in right away. You can tell it’s epic fantasy as there are many story lines to follow and many characters and backstories to learn about. I knew it was going to end on a cliffhanger as the book was nearing the end, so I ordered book two right away. I'm only afraid I may have caught up with the author.
If you like complicated worlds and storylines that start out separate but weave together rover time, you'll love this book.

I don't think I enjoyed this as much as others - but it was diverting enough. The book's origins as a self-published venture appear fairly evident and could have benefited with a touch more editing and refining of the jarring modern dialogue. As the 2 main characters are already perfect and unbeatable, I do not see how much more they can be developed. Perhaps the supporting cast will be the focus of that evolution. I will likely read the next installment but I not hanging out for it.

A fantastic story

I took a chance on this author, not knowing anything about him, and wow have I been entertained. The character's are well defined and you certainly get to like or dislike them. The storyline is built carefully but at a great pace, sprinkled with humour, and we'll the ending. Make your own mind up over that. I found it was hard to put down, and I am looking forward to the next book, if it's like the first I'm in for a treat.

Choice of names

Another good read. Since you are required to title your comments, and not having one off the top of my head I remembered thinking how unusual the author picked so many names that were. Common knowledge to everyone that's able to read instead of making fictitious ones up. I kind of liked it. Made it easier to keep up with characters and places.

It has that classic feel but with modern sensibilities, I enjoyed the style and the characters. I look forward to reading the sequel.

This book was easy to read and to follow even with multiple story lines. I really like Kildare, Zedaine and Mecklore, and I'm interested to see how their stories intertwine - I feel like they are closely related maybe? The end of the book is fairly abrupt, but overall a fairly good story
