Born Liberal, Raised Right

Rate this book
America has a problem. Conservatives aren't helping their kids mature past that arrested development phase also known as liberalism! In this groundbreaking book, noted speaker Reb Bradley proves that societal pressures and foolish child-raising theories that have gone mainstream are preventing parents from developing in their kids the key ingredients of maturity, including self-control. Too many children are becoming adults who are ruled purely by magical thinking, passions, emotions and desires- the hallmarks of the liberal mindset. It's up to parents to turn their baby Bolsheviks into good citizens by helping their kids mature past their infantile liberal stage. Reb Bradley shows how.

In the very introduction, Bradley informs you of how little understanding he has of anthropology, psychology, U.S. history and ergo political socialization. I was so amused by what I could only hope were redundantly facetious proclaimations that I had to stop and ask myself,
"Who is this guy that wishes civil rights did not happen? Who blames parents as the solitary reason for a child's development?"
His definition of conservatism involves black people on the back of the bus. Women butchered for asking to sit at the table, at home, in the office or even in politics. His definition of conservatism sends homosexuals to the firing squad.

Hate is taught and has no place in child reering. Children are not born liberal. The more educated society becomes of things like social equality, compassion, technology and science, the more we shall progress and evolve as a species. That is not a bad thing. With chapters like "Freedom to Be Enslaved" and "Defensive Parenting" it is no wonder children are proven to grow up with lower IQs if we "spare the rod, spoil the the child." Or maybe the chicken came before the egg.

I was looking for a child rearing book and this title caught my eye. Actually has some good info and you will see some below. That said - some topics (this was in child rearing in my library) should be free of political bias.

These are the pearls from this book that every child - liberal, conservative, pagan, religious should be raised to follow:
1. Children must be helped to bring their passions in check.
2. Children's happiness must not be the driving force of the home.
3. Children must not be indulged.
4. Children must not be rescued from every hardship.
5. Children must be allowed to suffer the consequences of their actions.
6. Children must be required to obey the first time they are spoken to.
7. Children must be taught to obey without always knowing the reason why.
8. Children must be required to treat parents and other adults with respect.
9. Children need parental oversight of their moral die.t
10. Children must be loved.

My parents raised me this way and were considered progressive and the 10 commandments were to be obeyed.

That is the pearls of wisdom from the book. A rework of the title - like "How to raise responsible children" would have been a better choice.

This book was alright. There were some good ideas. The thing was, though, that the author talked about how much time and effort it took him to write this book, yet I didn't feel that the topic was all that complicated. There was a lot of repetition, and regardless of whether or not I agreed with the topics and ideas proposed here, I didn't like how abrasive some of the ideas came across.
