A final chase between Allied and Nazi submarines at the dawn of the Cold War.
December 1944. As the fate of World War II seems to be sealed, a submarine leaves Germany, taking with it Hitler's last hope for winning the war. Two allied commandos immediately set off after the one English, the other American. But when the true nature of the precious cargo is revealed, the once parallel paths of these allies begin to diverge...
Taking place in the final year of World War II, both the Americans and British are on the hunt for a U-boat full of material for building thousands of bombs. The Allies are closing in on Berlin and want to make sure this war doesn't get drug out by letting that material fall into Axis hands. The story is based on some reality, about the only time in World War II a submarine destroyed another submarine while both were underwater.
I would say that I got what I wanted from it. The mood of the era is set with the traditional browns and grays typical of a WW2 story. The artwork is detailed and realistic. The story being factual sounds interesting but fleshing out the characters would have made them more valued. There is greed and betrayal but I couldn't invest in people with no or little known background.
I was self-conscious about having the local comic store order this for me as I'm known for little else to the manager. "I'm fascinated by submarines but not the Nazi party," was his introduction to me as I was trying to support a local specialty store over ordering from Amazon.
The story was nice. Well not nice but as nice as a world war story can go. I liked the idea though and the art was good. Since it's happening right before the beginning of the cold war, it was really interesting to read about the dynamics and look through the eyes of the people who were in the middle of it all. But i really wished there was more depth to the characters. Most of them felt rather two dimensional to me. I was expecting more layers in their personalities.
So yeah I definitely expected more from this but it was an interesting read.
Lots of people pulling guns on one another and submarine warfare mixed with the loosely based historical facts. It's about building bombs and explosives, outmaneuvering the opponent, and strategy and while I got it, I wasn't as invested because the characters seemed one-dimensional and couldn't keep me interested in the conflict. I'm assuming the intended audience is adults which is why it read differently that what I'm normally used to.
I liked the artwork, but it at the same time it looked very polished. I felt as if the story was quite boring, and I must admit that I only finished the book for the sake of finishing it.
Bland one-dimensional characters engaging in some uninteresting fights. The art was nice for the most part, but at times felt...too sanitized? War comics should feel a little grimy, and there was something a little too digital feeling for me here.
The actual plot was pretty engaging though. It seems like it could make for a fun action thriller, but one that most people would forget within a few days of watching.
