The UnChosen #1

The Queen's Enforcer

Rate this book
The Church of Rome rules the human population of the Continent with an iron hand. Beyond the borders of its influence are night children: vampires, werewolves, shifter, nymphs, incubi, djinn, and others. As steam engines begin to chug across new-laid track, demons appear.

In the shadow of the Church, young Queen Amillia of Albion clings to power, relying on her enforcer Jarvis to keep her advisors satisfied and her enemies at bay. But as each day marches forward, the powers around her demand she marry, and give away her cousin Elizabeth to be wed.

Driven to the edge by dreams of his dead lover, Shane, Jarvis exists only to carry out his orders from Church and Crown, to kill all non-human beings on sight. Resistant to magics, he brings battle against the demons and night children other soldiers dare not face, including the blood-thirsty Blue Death pirates. But sneers and whispers are building behind his back as he defeats enemies no human man should be able to survive.

The dragon Damascus, summoned by Zapheal, flies to Aquitaine. The Church is moving against her people, ready to eliminate the last bastion of night children. Abandoned by the other elder vampires, Zapheal contemplates a final stand with the remnants of her allies.

Captured into slavery, Telos, a snow leopard shifter, struggles to survive. Until the day that the Lord Inquisitor Melchizedek murders his owner and takes him to Albion, planning to lure Telos’s adopted father, the Admiral of the Blue Deaths to his doom. Fighting for the man who saved him as a child, the best that Telos can hope for is a quick death.

That is, until he meets Jarvis. On the edge of destruction, Telos asks the question that will shake thrones and awaken legends, leaving Jarvis no choice but to face the answers.

Ciara Darren

Ciara Darren is a contemporary romance author writing primarily MM+, but also MX, MF, and FF. Her stories are intense, slow burn serials with chosen family, high heat, power exchange, kink, and diverse representation.

The best place to start in her contemporary romances is Collin: Episodes 1-3, for a gentler introduction to polyamory and kink. Damian & Jun is a sequel serial that can be read on its own but is best after Collin: Episodes 13-15.

For darker work in the same line, look for Sanctum: Prior Claim, coming out Spring 2026, a second-chance romance about escaping the criminal underworld and surviving to thrive. This is a stand alone tie-in serial to The Residency Boys universe and contains spoilers for both the Collin and Damian & Jun serials.

I had zero expectations for this book. I was lucky enough to get an ARC and I want to tell EVERYONE about this intense epic fantasy.

Large cast of characters, jumping around to different lands, various mythical creatures, many threads of the story twisting together... all the great parts of an amazing story. Not only do you get great story, but really wonderful imagery about the many different people and places this book contains. There are mysteries inside mysteries inside secrets. Amazing layers of action, and intrigue, and emotion.

There are some graphic torture scenes and things that could be triggers for more sensitive readers, so please beware. But these scenes and mentions only deepen the characters involved and draw you into their struggles and triumphs.

There are a lot of thread starts at the beginning, and I love trying to figure out how everything is going to weave together. So the story is a seems a little scattered at the beginning, but by the middle of the book I couldn't put it down. And you are getting ALOT of book here, so much that there is more to the story. And yes, it's a cliffhanger, and I hope you curse the author as much as I did while at the same time rejoicing that there would be more.

I have a biiiiig book hangover after this one. I need the next book now.
I could not put it down and i need more.
What a great univers the author has created and the characters are brave, want them to be my friend type. They form strong bonds between themselves throughout the book. I really enjoy the characters the author has brought to life.
I loved the plot, all the magic and the church side of the story where they hate everything that is different.
Yes, i love love loved it, can't wait for book 2.

An epic fantasy tale that merges elements of history with fantasy and grabs your attention from the start. I love the use of the church and its demonization of anything other. While not an outright romance, there are plenty of feel good elements and romantic suspense. Definitely a five star read and one of my new favorites

I absolutely loved this story. The way the author weaves together so many different characters into a rich story full of intrigue and suspense is so wonderful. I really love that so many characters were fleshed out and we were given a look into so many different lives. The story pulled me right in and still hasn’t let me go a couple of days after I finished reading. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

After devouring this massive book in only four days, I didn't know how to write a review worthy of the world created in these pages. Just a little backstory, by chance I came across Darren's Term Series but was not able to find it to my disappointment, so I reached out to Darren and was rewarded with a reply that the books were edited and rebranded to what we have today, which was available under Kindle subscription on Amazon. I dove head first into the story.

From the brief outline of the book, I was under the impression that this would be simple but lengthy story and boy was I wrong...dead wrong. Usually in my reviews I try not ramble or give too much of the story away and I will try to do that with this book as well. I find myself saying story but this is farrrr from just being a simple story, Darren created a world...a universe. Though the story doesn't stray from certain aspects of our reality she still was able to accomplish something diverse, new and captivating. The complexity of the different societies, religion, people...I understand why the book was so long but it was so worth it to read.

I believe this world has everything a reader could ask for (except the cliffhanger at the end), it's worlds like this that I strive to find in my book choices. I would read any world she chooses to give us, this was truly one of the best of read in a long time, if I could have given it more stars I would have. Every book has its pros and cons, the pros outweigh the cons that I won't be mentioning them. If I'm able to get at least one reader to give this world a try without giving too much information then I've accomplished what I set out to do with my review.

Darren, excellent work!! I will definitely be grabbing Book 2.

This was so good! This was everything I want in an high fantasy and more! I drew me in right from the beginning and it kept my interest throughout. There are some delightfully despicable characters and characters that you just can't help but fall in love with. I will never feel any less protective of Telos then from the moment I met him. Throughout the entire book I felt this sense of worry and protectiveness over him and I really liked how this character was written. Endearing like a kitten but still with very sharp claws.
Jarvis was also very much a surprise for me and I loved watching him develop and evolve. I can't wait to read the next book in the series because I NEED to know what happens next!

I chose this book by it's cover. I did not read the blurb. I didn't even know what genre it was. I even chose it at random from my TBR pile. I had no idea what I was about to read, so every single word was exciting. I didn't know the plot or the players. I didn't know who the bad guys were, or the obstacles they would face. It was wonderful. The experience, and the book itself. Everyone needs to do this, at least once.

Thank you BookSprout and Ciara Darren for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

WHAT I LIKED:
This was an interesting book to dive into. There are so many different points of view that this is read from until each of their stories inevitably get tied into each other. I was more shocked and more enthralled with this book each time something of importance was revealed. I do have to say that I have a soft spot for Telos and I love the fierceness of the one witch (not naming cause it’s a spoiler 😉). I can’t believe the way it ended!! There are so many loose and questions that need answers. I will be checking daily for the next book!!

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:
The only part of this that I am going to say I didn’t enjoy is that I am not certain anything was accomplished by the end.. in the end he accepted who he was and his power but that seems to be it.. we are right back where the book started..

OVERALL / RECOMMENDATIONS:
I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a fantasy story with incredible characters that accept each other as they are. This book is a really long read but I am so glad I took the time to read it. I am in love and rooting for multiple characters.

I've always loved epic fantasy and this one, luckily, doesn't disappoint! Great world building, interesting characters, multiple POVs and - most importantly - an intriguing plot and amazing writing!

It's not a light read, there are some things that are concidered to be triggers, I'd suggest to check the triggers before reading.

A book you didn't know you needed in your collection. I don't know how this author did it. Imagine all the different characters, backgrounds, plots, detailed descriptions of any and everything - all woven together in this fantastical story.

This installment is lengthy, but so engaging you never really notice.

This is similar to a history,

Similar to how an actual history with the church happened who knows... minus the night children. So far a good main character nice um not shying away from the norm as far as romantic interests are. Thank you.
