There’s a lot of creativity in this world and that’s really the selling point. If you love exploring new worlds and get a kick out if unpredictable and new sights, you will adore this. It was absolutely my favorite part of the story, seeing what new events and places we’d find.
The pacing is way too fast. I like to get into a new story quickly too but there’s not nearly enough time given to process and explore each new areas. We don’t get to see our characters react.
I do think this is a fun story and if you go in with just the idea of exploring new places, you’ll definitely have fun. I would definitely consider future works by this author but I hope they slow down the pace.
The author’s love of traditional fantasy shines through in this middle grade adventure, where we’re introduced to protagonist, Adelle, and her foster brother, Jack, who are hurled into a world of magic and mystery from the opening scene. From there, the stakes continue to rise. Adelle struggles to find her place in this strange new world. Jack is kidnapped by Mystica’s dark ruler, sparking a daring rescue mission that sees Adelle face off against some of Mystica’s most dangerous characters – both human and otherwise, and she learns a secret about her past that will forever change her future. Mystica is a terrific fast-paced adventure for the young, and young at heart. If you turn and return to classic children’s fantasy (think The Neverending Story, Narnia Chronicles et al), Mystica is going to feel like coming home.
I was super excited to have won Mystica in a competition. This is a fun middle-grade/teen adventure which I will be sharing with my daughter now that I’m finished with it. Four teens embark on a rescue mission to save Adelle’s brother Jack. I liked the dynamics of the awesome foursome and I was especially fond of Reve. He was my favourite. The world of Mystica was nicely fleshed out and I enjoyed the magic woven throughout the story. Who doesn’t love flying horses, glowing humans and a dragon. I think this book was a really nice start to the Mystica Series.

Mystica is the 1st book in the Mystica Trilogy by Danielle Hughes.
Mystica, by Danielle Hughes, is a fast-paced fantasy novel that blends survival and adventure. The story begins with two children, Adelle and Jack, who have survived a plane crash; when they realize that they are no longer in the place, they were before the crash, they find themselves in Mystica, a world full of magic and dangers, including tribes of people, mystical beings, and a dark force that could, in principle, destroy everything surrounding them.
The story's opening section (the struggle) becomes a large-scale adventure of courage and exploration. When a wicked opponent captures Adelle, she joins Reve, Kyla, and Brek on a dangerous journey that requires them to show bravery, trust one another, and rely on the friendship that has grown among them.
All of the main characters are shown to have genuine emotions: Adelle, who is extremely determined yet suffers from low self-esteem; Reve, who is torn between what is right for his people and following his feelings for Adelle; and the rest of the group, who help shape the journey through their individual experiences and the relationships they form.
Hughes presents her account with clarity and emotion, creating a world that is visually appealing but also potentially hazardous. She gives detailed descriptions of the landscape and the tribes' customs in Mystica; the way she structures the narrative keeps the reader interested as the mysteries of Mystica are revealed on every level.
Beyond the action and suspense, what strikes me most is the portrayal of the characters. Each one is given real emotional reactions appropriate to their age group, such as fear of being accepted, false bravery, irritation, doubt, and hope. These responses help readers easily become sympathetic to the characters. I especially like the way Reve calls Adelle "Fair One." Mystica is about finding strength in unexpected places, making difficult decisions, and realizing where each person belongs. Besides offering a fantastic world filled with fantasy and danger, it is also a touching account of growing up and coming to understand oneself.
If you're a reader who enjoys stories with magical worlds, young heroes, and a balance of action and emotion, then "Mystica" is exactly what you'll want!
Mystica by Danielle Hughes is a vivid and fast-paced fantasy that blends survival, adventure themes into a captivating tale. The story begins with two orphans, Adelle and Jack, who survive a plane crash and soon realize they are no longer in the world they knew, but in Mystica, a magical and perilous land filled with tribes, enchanted creatures, and an ancient darkness threatening their way of life.
What begins as a struggle for survival quickly turns into a greater journey of courage and discovery. When Jack is taken by a ruthless enemy, Adelle joins forces with Reve, Kyla, and Brek on a dangerous quest that tests their bravery, trust, and the bonds of friendship. The characters are brought to life with genuine emotion, Adelle, fiercely independent and struggling with selfdoubt; Reve, torn between duty to his people and his affection for Adelle; and their companions, each adding warmth, conflict, and depth to the journey.
Hughes writes with clarity and heart, creating a world that feels both beautiful and dangerous. Her descriptions of landscapes and tribal traditions bring Mystica alive, while the pacing keeps the reader engaged as the mysteries unfold layer by layer. Beyond the action and suspense, what stands out for me are the characters of the story. The author writes them with real emotions peculiar to their age, like fear of fitting in, false bravery, irritation, doubt, and hope, making it easy to relate with them. I especially love the way Reve calls Adelle "Fair One". I think it's cute!
At its heart, Mystica is about finding strength in unexpected places, making difficult choices, and discovering where one truly belongs. It is not only a fantasy adventure filled with magic and danger but also a touching story of growth and self discovery.
For readers who enjoy magical worlds, young heroes, and journeys that balance action with heart, Mystica is that book for you! I give it a five star rating.
Mystica – Book 1 is an engaging fantasy adventure novel that quickly draws readers into a mysterious new world filled with magic, danger, and emotional depth.
The story begins with an unexpected plane crash that transports Adelle and a young boy, Jack, into the land of Mystica. From this moment, the novel builds a strong sense of momentum that keeps the pages turning.
The author stand out at creating an atmospheric setting. Mystica is portrayed as a rich and captivating world, complete with tribal communities, ancient traditions, and hidden magical forces. The contrast between modern reality and this unfamiliar land is one of the book’s strengths, making the characters’ reactions believable and relatable. The tree-dwelling Zuriel Tribe, in particular, is well developed and adds a unique cultural layer to the story.
Character development is handled thoughtfully. Adelle stands out as a resilient and protective protagonist whose strength is shaped by her past experiences. Jack provides emotional balance and vulnerability, while characters like Reve introduce loyalty and quiet tension that enhance the narrative.
The looming threat of Gorus and his wolves adds suspense and raises the stakes without overwhelming the story.
Overall, Mystica – Book 1 is a compelling start to transdimensional tales that will appeal to readers who enjoy portal fantasies, magical worlds, and character-driven adventures.
Its blend of action, emotion, and mystery, makes it a strong choice for enchanted tale readers and sets up expectation to the Mystica Trilogy.
I found Mystica by Danielle Hughes to be a fun easy read. Great for anyone who loves fantasy, light romance, friendship, and adventure Adele and Jack are orphans, they're not related but are like brother and sister to each other. They're plane crashes into Mystica, a strange place with unusual flora and fauna and a mysterious tribe that lives without mechanical or electrical means takes them in. They want to go back to Earth but don't know how. Jack goes missing and Adele in her new friends take off to rescue him against the elders wishes. But the island holds other Secrets now if Adele can only believe what she has learned. If you're looking for a short easy fantasy to get into I highly recommend this book, it's fun for all ages. I look forward to book two and more of Jack and Adele.
I enjoyed this fast paced story were 2 regular kids end up in Mystica and learn the hard way that magic is real as drama and trouble starts early in the story and Adelle must do whatever it takes to rescue Jack. I laughed at times and enjoyed watching Adelle do her best.
This book was fun and hit you fast into its world. It was fun and the world building was pretty special. It drew you in slowly but surely. Loved the way the magic built within the book.

Was a very fun read. I was looking for something as a follow up to Terry Brooks' Shannara series and this was great. Similar feel but the modern day lost world concept was unique and provided a nice framework. Have read all three of the books and will say that it is definitely a series worth investing the time in. Plus, the castle on the cover is a rendition of one of my favorites in real life. (Dunrobin in Scotland in case you're a castle geek like me)
Well! Adelle sure wasn't expecting that. The plane crash was scary enough without discovering who she actually is. To top it all off, she also possesses magic.
The question is................... Will she accept who she is and stay, or will she remain determined to leave and return to her miserable life on Earth?

I am a little older than the target audience for this book....but it is exactly the kind of fantasy book I would have loved to read in middle school. The world building is excellent, and the way Adelle grows and learns throughout the story is inspirational. There is plenty of action to keep the readers attention, and a nice HFN ending with plenty of room for additional books to continue the story.

Adelle has her life all planned out and stubbornly refuses to even consider anything or anyone else. Full of adventure, a new world, and many strange things.
I very much enjoyed this book and made the time to finish reading it in three days. Obviously it held my attention and was hard to put down! I felt very drawn into this fantasy world, discovering it as the main character did. I wondered about things in this world just as she did. The author skillfully addressed each question that both the main character and I had. Yes issues and questions remain although for the time being, all is peaceful and as it should be. I can tell, however that another book, another adventure is coming. And what an adventure this one was!. An airplane crash, lost in a strange forest, meaning new people who have a whole different way of living, who have no idea of many things we take for granted in our world, read this intriguing book to find out how the main character survives and
Fabulous book for readers transitioning from middle grade books to young adult books. Feels like it was inspired by Wizard of Oz and Narnia, but much more modern. Very easy to read with some adorable characters. I loved the horse, Ishkur!!
Mystica is a wonderful fast-paced read. I enjoyed all the characters, especially Jack. I can’t wait to read the next book. Danielle Hughes did an amazing job weaving a story that both kids and adults can enjoy!
"An unexpected storm? Surely with today's technology they can tell of a storm is going to pop up! I guess that's the thing with life - it's sheets full of surprises." And so our hero, Adelle's journey begins. Fourteen year old Adelle is caring, thoughtful, and a responsible sibling to her mischievous younger 'brother' Jack. Both foster children, they're gifted a dream trip to Tasmania that turns into a nightmare when their plane crashes and they find themselves on a mysterious island in an alternate reality......
Mystica gallops along with plenty of action and lots to think about too, as Adelle learns important lessons about bonding, trust, and resourcefulness.
There are stereotypes in Mystica but, but for me, that's what fairy tales and traditional fantasy are all about. Your middle grader fan of of fantasy is going to love Mystica.
Magical and mysterious, Book 1 of the Mystica was definitely a cosy, feel-good fantasy story that had me invested throughout the whole journey. With a fast paced beginning, we find foster-siblings Adelle and Jack in the middle of a crash landing in an unknown land known as Mystica. ✨️ I definitely loved the world-building and vibes of this story, reminding me of stories such as Never-Ending Story, Secret of Moonacre, and other books such as Winterling, and The Atlantis series. Not to mention all the characters were very loveable! I absolutely adored Reve and Adelle's relationship and truly hope they end up together at the end of the series! 🤩😁 We also have some great action-packed obstacles throughout the journey, with a heartfelt theme of found family and belonging throughout. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the rest of this enchanting series. 💕💕💕
Fantastic read. Highly recommended for anyone who loves Fantasy and all things magic and mysterious. It's fun, easy to read and follow and I was captivated by the story straight away. Adelle, a young girl, who is the main character goes on a wonderful path of self discovering and I enjoyed following along with her.
This book is full of wonderful and clever new creatures who are not only explained by the characters through the story, they are also described at the end and has a map of Mystica to better understand the journey they go on. Book one really does set the series up well. I am here for it and excited to get wrapped up in this new world and be hooked on reading all of the new stories to come out about Mystica.
This is a perfect middle grade style story. I appreciate how the author addresses how the hardships of foster care and not having a stable family can effect children. This magical story is worth reading and Jack is adorable. I did think the beginning dragged a bit.
I was provided this book in exchange for an honest review.
*Spoiler: am I the only one who wants the main character to end up with the brother Kale? It would be the perfect switch up to keep the audience on their toes. After all Reve has his own tribe to rule while the main character will have the castle. (Or maybe I’ve just read to many enemies to lover books) lol

L (age 10): It was creative. I liked it because it was not predictable.
W (age 7): There were some very creative names for the creatures and people of Mystica. It was engaging because there were twists in their plans. I liked this book.
S: This is an imaginative tale of self belief, magic and courage that is well written for its target age group. The story is told from the point of view of Adelle, who has internal struggles that are realistic, while remaining appropriate to the age of the audience. My kids were hooked by this story and were always asking for more.
This was a super fun middle grade read that’s full of adventure, magic, and mystery. The story is captivating right away and is an easy read. I think fantasy readers of all ages will enjoy it and I can’t wait to continue the series! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for sure!

'No one is nobody, child'. ......................................... MYSTICA - An exciting, fast-paced tale of the power of friendship, the revelation of hidden magic and the transformation into one's true self. Lived it!...Loved it!
This was such a whimsical book full of magic and adventure. I loved every minute of being in the world of Mystica and had to start book two as soon as I finished book one. A must-read for anyone who loves fantasy books that have magic, found family, adventure and magical creatures.
This book was so exciting and adventurous. Loved the story. The characters are so warm and inviting. Adele is such an interesting character. Jack as young as he is, has a way about him.
