The Jerk Next Door

Rate this book
He might look like a daydream, but he’s anything but.

My life is perfect. No, really. Dream career, great social life, a fantastic condo, and I’m easy on the eyes. It’s just that I’m a little bored with it all.

Until my new neighbor moves in. He’s unfriendly, uptight, and unwilling to compromise. Looks like annoying him just became my new hobby.

Poor guy has no idea who he’s up against. The Jerk Next Door just met his match.

The Jerk Next Door is a standalone romance featuring two warring neighbors, unexpected favors, an awakening of epic proportions, and very thin walls. It is low angst, high heat, and even higher snark.

Is the cover on this enticing and hot? Absolutely not. But I was pleasantly suprised by how much I loved this story. Admittedly, I'm a big mood reader and this just really worked for me.

Ace is straight and has trust issues from a previous relationship. He moves to a new place ready to shake off the pain of the past and start fresh. Ace meets his neighbor Reign and they don't start off on the right foot.

Reign is gay, an artist living off a trust fund and has a revolving door of men. Ace thinks Reign is loud, obnoxious and a manwhore and Reign thinks Ace is judgemental and wound too tight. Despite their first impressions, they still find each other attractive much to their dismay. But Ace is straight and Reign doesn't do relationships after getting his heart stomped on. What happens when their lust boils over and everything they thought they knew about themselves is blown to smithereens? What happens when they realize their first impressions were ALL wrong?

Ace is such a refreshing character with a lot of heart. Reign was a lot deeper of a character than I was expecting. What I liked most about this story was the slow burn. Not every author can do slow burn right but it really worked here and the author developed their relationship so well. I loved that Ace took everything in stride and Reign wasn't afraid to jump either. Their swoony communication was a little unrealistic but didn't bother me too much. I wish that Reign hadn't had so many men. That turned me off just a little.

Overall, a pretty good MM story about a man that never expected to love another man and an artist that got his muse back. It was relatively low angst with a healthy dose of slow burn and steam and a nice HEA. If you like sweet and fluffy MM, I highly suggest this one.

Mia Monroe excels at syrupy sweet love stories. When I pick up one of her books, I know I'm going to get incredibly polite and supportive MC's that are amazing at articulating their feelings and more than willing to do so. At times it can be a little much, but other times it's so heartfelt and swoon worthy that it's impossible to be mad about it.

The first half of this book was so good. I loved the back and forth between Reign and Ace. Reign's method of annoyance was hilarious, especially the times his best friend Harley was involved. Poor Ace just wanted to get some sleep so he could make a good impression at his new job. This dynamic really worked for me. It was kind of enemies-to-lovers adjacent, I guess. More like casual acquaintances in forced proximity with thin walls between them and very different lifestyles.

I thought Reign's artistic nature was very sexy. I loved everything about it - the awareness and appreciation of his muse, the way his creativity would wake him up and steal him away at times, the insecurities he felt even when he knew his art was amazing. This side of him was almost non-existent in the first half of the book, which made it really special when it started to shine through in response to Ace. Unfortunately, when Reign's character started to change, Ace's character sort of faded into the background. He became a muse, a supporter, a lover...but not much else. Everything in his life started to revolve around Reign's potential. This was a little disappointing for me. I never doubted that Ace was over the moon happy with Reign, but I didn't like that his character became secondary to Reign's.

The second half of this book was love, love, love. There was a good amount of steam, though an extremely lackluster first time, and tons of romantic declarations and affirmations that came about a bit fast, but were sweet regardless. The epilogue was nice, but I was hoping to get a glimpse at Danny and Harley too! I felt invested in their relationship, even as side characters, and a little closure would have made me happy.

At the end of the day, I enjoyed reading this book. It was light and fluffy and a fun weekend read when thinking hard was the last thing I wanted to do.

Hmmh. Ok, this is not an easy review to write. "The Jerk next Door" has a setting we all know well enough. 2 guys thrown together by circumstances who don't like each other yet are attracted to each other. Add into the mix that both men here are approaching 40 (not that you notice it, they behave more immature at times than college boys) and one of them is supposedly straight and has never before been attracted to men. The other has been disappointed by a former boyfriend and now in turn sluts his way through the male gay population of Seattle casually breaking hearts on the way because if someone is shitty to you apparently you have to behave at least as shitty to all the world from then on.
Yes, I think you notice already that I had my problems with the plot and the characters. I did not like Reign and his rebellious sluttiness felt icky to me. I could have liked Ace ... if he hadn't been so bland. Ok so I did at least not dislike him but he was not exactly intriguing.
And the plot ... it started actually promising. I like enemies-to-lovers. But beyond being enemies the attraction was too instant. The way Ace accepted after almost 40 years of hetero that now he is with a man felt too instant. The way Reign accepted from the first kiss that he would give up his manwhoring ways and that Ace could even be "the One" ... was too instant. Romance alone does not make an interesting story. From the moment Ace and Reign get together all their problems fade away slowly and what remains is just them shmoozing up in a cringey way. Stories come to life by conflict and there was no real conflict after that. Which made this book a total fail for me. I was bored out of my mind and didn't even like the characters.

Guys I’m not kidding I loved this book so much!!
it was funny, hot and sweet and it had a bi-awakening trope (which I adore)!!
Ace and Reigns dynamic was absolutely the best, it started with so many pranks and little teasing between neighbors but turned into such an amazing and beautiful love story.

Some would say their relationship dynamic changed too face but I don’t think so…both were at some point in their life where they new what they wanted.
Both also had some hardships behind them and got betrayed by their loved ones, ugh they really found a soulmate in each other🥹🩷!!

The book started off really well. Then literally went from 0 too 100 within a matter of minutes. The romance didn't even make sense. Reign felt interesting at first but soon became irritating and gross. However , this book made me laugh out loud several times. So, I am not really complaining......

I enjoyed this one. It was a cute enemies to lovers (ish), bi-awakening book.

I liked Ace and Reign. These two had some chemistry for sure but didn't really know how to act on it at first.

I would've loved a little more with Ace's brother groveling for forgiveness or something more than just This is what he did, and I don't speak to him anymore. We got so much of Nick on Reign's side that I felt shorted on Ace's.

I did love the epilogue though. I love seeing couples in the future and where they are after the book ends.

First off, I am loving that Mia Monroe is embracing more mature men in her writing and making it okay for her characters to find love with another man even if they hadn't ever experienced same sex attraction before!

2.5 rounded up.

This is an extremely okay book. In fact, it's so okay that it surpasses okay and becomes the uberokay, which is basically the okay version of Nietzsche's Übermensch, but far more... okay.

Yeah, sorry, I beat that joke into the ground. Anyways, this book starts off with the always fun concept of "guy moves into a new apartment and instantly becomes enemies with his next-door neighbor, only to fall in love." The characters - the inexplicably named Ace and Reign - are... wait for it... okay. Ace is straight and recovering from a bad breakup; Reign is very sexually promiscuous, which is his way of protecting his heart after his own bad breakup. The next-door-neighbor-enemy conceit doesn't go much farther than making sex sounds and playing loud music to annoy each other, and it only lasts, what, maybe 20% of the way into the book? That was pretty disappointing. It feels like they get over their differences in about two seconds, instantly falling in lust/love with very minimal angst. I mean, I'm always down for less angst in my romances, but like... this was super minimal. It feels as if the author replaced the angst with sex scenes, which is what the novel really feels like it devolved into.

Anyways.

I do want to address a point I've seen other reviewers making: at various points towards the beginning, Reign sounds creepy when he talks about "turning" a FWB, and "assmatizing" him. Is it creepy? I mean, eh, I don't think so. Is it fetishizing? Well, yeah, but half the genre is pure fetishization. In general, it just sounds like how some people really speak.

Overall it was pretty paint by numbers (write by numbers?). It's readable enough, I guess. I recommend it if you like enemies-to-lovers; neighbors-to-lovers; lots of sex; GFY; and relatively low angst.

Ace saw a man leaving Reign's door and he thought Reign must had a great night. The next day, Ace listened to Reign and the same man from the night before having a wild and passionate sex.

This book wasn't my type and not a fan of character like Reign who love casual hook-up, he sound like a manwhore.

I was hooked right into Ace and Reign’s story from the beginning! Sexual awakening is one of my favorites. So many opportunities for first kisses, first experiences and those tiny tender moments that leave you feeling swoony. The start of their relationship really ticked those boxes for me. Ace identified as straight when he met Reign, when he started to explore his sexuality with Reign they agreed to take it slow. However their first time seemed very abrupt and out of place for the story. It left me feeling without those warm and fuzzies you long for. As it was unfolding I was expecting a misunderstanding, not throwing caution and questions to the wind. I couldn’t help feeling surprised at this turn. Those tiny tender moments followed later in the story, as Reign was as all in with both feet and Ace was full steam ahead with no reservations. Cue the swoony and sweet moments I was hoping for as their relationship grew. I loved how supportive Ace was of Reign, and how Reign and his parents became the family that Ace had lost. Their HEA was perfect for them!

4 stars - I liked it!

I'm going to be honest, the cover definitely made me want to read this book because come on how nice does that cover look?? Plus I'm always looking for new MM romance authors so I decided to give this book a go!

This has to be the most low-angst book I've ever read before, it was just a big ball of sweetness and characters that are annoyed with each other at the beginning but are attracted to each other and they start dating, communication is fantastic, then it's all mushy and cheesy and it's just fantastic!

This book definitely isn't for everyone. If you're not a fan of the mushy and cheesy stuff, this book isn't for you. It's so sweet you'll most definitely get a cavity. It's honestly the perfect palette cleanser or if you're looking for a book to get you put of a slump!

It's a quick read with bi-awakening, characters that support each other, and that love each other unconditionally once they get together. It really is sweet!

The Jerk Next Door is a fun and delicious enemies to lovers romance by Mia Monroe.

Reign and Ace are neighbors who can't help but to antagonize one another. I enjoyed every moment of seeing them fight and then starting to lower the walls. They go from not being able to stand one another to connecting deeply and profoundly. Best of all though is watching a commitment phobe grow into loving himself and then someone else.
It's beautiful.

Their story is full of snark and banter. Their story is full of character growth and a sexual awakening. Yes, there are some major immature moments, but I was obviously in the mood to find them kind of funny.

The Jerk Next Door is a sweet and compelling romance. This Mia Monroe story hit all the marks for me and left me delighted to have met these men and followed their journey.

The story begins with extremely immature behavior of one of the characters that honestly grated on my nerve. I am very happy that Reign's later "performance" makes up for it and in Ace's hands he blossoms into a gentle and emotional artist. Both the characters appear very youthful for their age, but it didn't bother me too much.
Overall, the story was fun and emotional, and hot and the balance between all parts was well maintained. I enjoyed reading the story, though I wish some of the secondary characters were more than periodical afterthought. I think the story would feel more complete that way.

Bello davvero come libro!

Ace and Reign are adorable together. ❤

When I first started reading this I didn't think it'd be for me. They'd do the most childish things to one another and I couldn't help laughing at how stupid it all was. Ace splashing water on Reign and pretending like the wind did it had me laughing so hard! 🤣Obviously, I couldn't stop reading... and before I knew it I was caught up in the story. 😏

I prefer darker stories with a little more drama but as far as low angst fluffiness goes this one was pretty good. It was easy to read, the MCs had great chemistry, and the ending made me smile. 3/5 stars

This was a great read, the first half was hilarious with all the antics and battle of wills between feuding neighbors, two mature men acting likes kids, it was a riot. Reign is gay, a big slut, a bit of a tease, a total jokester, and suddenly attracted to his rather uptight neighbor Ace who he cannot wait to get his hands on. Ace, on the other hand, is straight. This author can always be relied upon for an enjoyable read, this was another, wonderful stuff.

Three stars because it wasn't bad, it just didn't hit with me.
I am usually all over a low angst, happy, easy read - but this was just too much. Too sweet, no conflict, lots of sex with not enough chemistry and it did not deliver on the enemies to lovers vibe I was promised by the title. There was so much potential for complex relationship development, but everything about them as individuals and a couple fell flat.
Reign's BFF and Ace's sister both felt like filler instead of impactful characters in their story. Reign's parents were delightful though and that was refreshing.
I finished it. And I am happy they are happy, but this just wasn't as satisfying as I was hoping for.

PS: Ace's bad behaving brother was named Tyler when he was first mentioned then his named changed to Jaxon.

Very cute, sweet, straight-forward, low-angst enemies to lovers story. I loved that there was:
✅ no miscommunication
✅ they actually talked with one another about their thoughts and feelings
✅ Ace never freaked-out that he was having feelings for a man, even though he had considered himself straight
✅ Reign had an awesome family who accepted and loved him unconditionally

My only little complaint was that both Ace and Reign were about to turn 40 yrs old. IMO they lived, talked and acted like early 20s.

A funny enemies to lovers, bi-awakening, steamy romance…Ace just move and meets his new neighbor Reign, they have this hate banter going on so Reign assumes that he is homophobic. Reign isn’t subtle about his hookups and Ace just want to sleep, but at the same time there’s this attraction between them, Ace haven’t never been attracted to another man and he is a little jealous.
Everything chance between them because a little kiss and a fake date,I loved watching this two navigate their new relationship and how quick Reign change his playboy persona to wanting everything with Ace. He just was waiting for the right guy to come to his life and love him.
Ace was amazing and sweet, I like how the accept his feel is for Reign and his new sexuality, he found someone to love him too. I really like the book! Steamy and sweet!
