The Chief’s Chief

Rate this book
When Mark Meadows became President Trump’s fourth chief of staff on March 6, 2020, life in the United States had never been better. Unemployment was at an all-time low, and the stock market was at an all-time high. During his first three years in office, President Trump had kept more of his campaign promises than any president in modern history, and that record of success was only going to continue. Then, in what seemed like the blink of an eye, a deadly coronavirus arrived on our shores, and brought the Trump economy screeching to a halt. Suddenly, our streets were empty, and our hospitals were full. Millions of Americans were scared, lonely, and unemployed, all while the global economy teetered on the edge of collapse. President Trump and his team worked tirelessly to keep the country going and get a vaccine to the American people. In this frank, candid account of his ten months in the White House, Mark Meadows—known simply as “The Chief” around the West Wing—tells the story of how he and a close team of loyal advisors helped President Trump navigate one of the worst years in American history.

This book can now be used as toilet paper, if you weren't already.

Mark Meadows has taken a plea deal for immunity from Jack Smith and the DOJ and has admitted that the entire election chapter in this book is a lie.

THERE WAS NO ELECTION FRAUD!!!

Today I learned that when you're Mark Meadows and you lied in your book but told your publisher that all statements in the book were true and later while under oath directly contradicted many of those statements, that your publisher will sue you for US$2,950,000 plus attorney's fees.

Ok.. hold on, hear me out.

I pre-ordered this book after I read about it on the news. Yes the fake news, which all of them are so it doesn't matter which one you think that is. And just before I had the chance to read this book Meadows was in the news for refusing to comply with the J6 Investigation Committee. He'd previously been handing over documents but subpoenaing his call logs from his cell phone was just too far for him so he quit complying. That's something that was obviously in the back of my mind while I was reading this. But I decided to go ahead and push forward on it particularly because Meadows was in the news and I was hoping for some more insight into who he was as a person that wasn't colored so heavily by the bias of a news outlet.

Let's start with the positives, and yes there were positives. The Chief's Chief offered quite a bit of perspective that was valuable to me. The book started off with some very bold (false) claims and I set myself up to expect that from the whole book, but that wasn't the case. There were a lot of sections of this book that were personal narrative, personal experience and opinions and going more into detail about Meadows' relationship with President Trump. And those were the parts of the book that I found myself actually enjoying reading.

Not to mention, I never got bored reading this book. It was written quite well and although I found myself disagreeing with a lot of Meadows' opinions on things I was happy to be reading a book that was well written and intended to be easily read and digested by the public. The target audience was obviously the everyday person and it wasn't stifled by political jargon or overly complicated descriptions.

But there were also a lot of false and exorbitant claims being made that were even provably false (very easily at that.) Election claims aside, a lot of the information provided about COVID-19 was false, including claims that Trump was the first to insist it was a lab leak. And I find it kinda laughable that this made it into the book without an editor saying something.

Which brings me to the next point, Meadows credited Trump for damn near everything. If it happened it was because Trump suggested it or Trump supported it, even when it had nothing to do with him. And this is where Meadows' bias shows through. He describes Trump in this book as some sort of untouchable god almost and despite his claims of giving it to him like it is and not sucking up, that's exactly what Meadows did. And you can see it in examples like this where he credits Trump for being 'the first' or 'the pioneer' of something that he really had very little or nothing to do with. And at one point he expressed complaint that Trump did not receive public credit for something that.. well, Trump did not do.

This is something made even more apparent as I have learned more about COVID theories and the sociopolitical interactions before, during, and after the outbreak.

At the end of the day I'm about as far away from Meadows in terms of political opinion as one can get so obviously there were many points in this book that I disagreed with. However, that's not really why I rated it so low. I knew going into this book that I wasn't going to agree with Meadows and that's fine. I think it's very important to read and understand the opinions of the people you disagree with. It's good for helping solidify your own opinions and also for expanding perspective so I'm appreciative for that reason.

But there were very detailed claims in this book about the period of time with the President fell ill with COVID. And Meadows goes into lengthy detail about it. Describing events in relation to each other multiple times and clearly stating that Trump tested positive for COVID before his first presidential debate (and before the rally he held even earlier than that.) They got him tested again and he tested negative the second time around so they assumed the first was a false positive. What got me about this incident is that, the way Meadows describes this in the book, one would think that the follow-up COVID test was a rapid test. So they used a rapid test to confirm whether he was or was not positive (and that goes against medical precedent even back to that time when PCR tests were statistically reported as more accurate.) Regardless, the real issue I had with this was that Trump came out and called these claims that he tested positive before his first presidential debate "fake news." And despite these claims coming from his own book, Meadows supported Trump and agreed that it was fake news. Which just makes me think even more that he's behaving as a puppet for the President and will go along with whatever he has to say, regardless of if he personally thinks it is right or wrong.

Anyway, that's the impression that I got from this book. As always, when you're reading a political 'memoir' of sorts you're really only getting part of the story. There are a lot more pieces to the puzzle than just this one story, but Meadows' own recension of his (very detailed) explanation of events gives me no other option than to be skeptical of his narrative of events regardless of the validity or truthfulness of the content.

You will love this book if you are foolish enough to believe a no name minor congressman from nowhere became Donald Trump's best friend and he was able to manipulate and control him. This is written by someone not dealing with reality.

You will like this book if you believe that the Republican party is corrupt and colluded with others to cost Donald Trump the election, selected poor candidates for the Supreme Court and the author is the savior of the party.

Near the end it is clear Meadows wants to be Trumps running mate and will stoop to anything to be that.

If you are looking for information or insight into the Trump white house there is nothing worth reading and January 6 is covered in 3 pages.

This is a poorly written fairy tale so stick to a classic fairy tale and be entertained.

Garbage Human Being

This book is a love sonnet written for an audience of one- Treasonous Trump
Anytime he mentions the news or the Democrats he spouts radical rhetoric.
He is a ruthless evangelical who doesn't believe in social justice or equal rights.
He believes the end justifies the means.
He is like a big dumb pit bull and he is a very dangerous man

If you are a Trump fan this is the perfect deifying read. It was one of the most synchophantic books I've ever read so I'm not sure what upset Trump except he was in collusion with Meadows to boost sales. With the former present panning it of course people were going to rush to buy it. Given how the former president never missed out on an opportunity to scam people if he thought it would benefit him it wouldn't surprise me to find out he really wasn't upset. And the whole story about Meadows pulling back from the J-6 committee's investigation really reeks of his attempt to sell more books.

The only part that the former president may have been upset about is the small section that points to the fact that he was infected with COVID, knew he was and went ahead with the debate spewing infectious breath on Biden and the attendees. I'm glad my library had a copy so I didn't line Mr. Meadows pocket with my hard earned money.

What can you possibly say? There isn't a single footnote, citation, or even a bibliography in the entire book, it is like a grade school copy of what the undereducated would think a book like this should be like. It is merely a regurgitation of every petty grievance, insult, and lie told by the administration. I'm not sure the man is capable of independent thought at this point. A sense of one's media image and brand is no substitute for actual self-awareness. If this is indicative of the depth and level of conservative thought at this point in history we are well and truly fucked.

Clarity?

This book is about the first Trump administration, and Mark Meadows was the WH Chief of Staff. One got the feeling that Trump himself supervised this writing. I just couldn't shake the feeling that approval was the purpose for this book. It seemed to be full of excessive complaints about the media and about Joe Biden. There really was a great deal of focus put upon criticisms of Joe Biden. It was diminishing to the story.

The Covid-19 situation seems like it had no planning at all, something they tried to ignore. Properly managed and that could have been a politician's ticket to heroism. But it was mismanaged and that cannot be blamed on Joe Biden.

The January 6th insurrection is covered in this book, but not in much detail. Almost as though MAGA just wants the world to whitewash the event even though it's on camera, clearly documented. It happened.

This book should have never been published. It is egregious to the rigorous norms of writing and publishing. All lawyers in this industry should file suit for deceiving the public. Was it even vetted by the National Security Council?

Authentically, it should be titled "Love Letter From The Court Jester to His King". Even Donald Trump trashed the book. The adoration didn't merit with him.

This book was written in hindsight for the express purpose to project blame onto others for the administration's failings; to say what should have been said but wasn't; to create an alternative reality that insults science fiction for the soul purpose to speak no evil, hear no evil, see no evil if only in reference to all others. Finally, hoping the reader doesn't understand due diligence.

Mark Meadows - was someone holding your family hostage and forced your to write this in exchange for their safe release? Blink twice for yes.

I love political books. I love learning about the author and their experiences and lives - of all parties. I read them all.

This was the worst political book I have ever - in my 54 years of life - read. In the first few pages he refers to President Biden as “Sleepy Joe”? Why? What is the purpose of this book except an homage and virtual adoration for his Supreme Leader, DT? I don’t get it.

What a shameful book / and a waste of a few hours of my life. Gross.

According to Joseph Campbell "You are the Hero of your own Story"...and this book demonstrates exactly that from a bitter ex-chief of staff, in a reimagined narrative that probably should be classified as FICTION. There are better uses of your time than reading this farce.

I bought the book before its writer disavowed his own book on national television. A few days ago I began reading and got as far as any intelligent healthy man can. Though mind-boggling, it is even more frightening that folks are so willing to follow men and women of such cowardice and insanity.

As expected this book was a joke. I took it out of the library, to compare to Cassidy Hutchinson's recounting of events. Mark Meadows doesn't mention Cassidy in any way. In fact, this book seems like it was edited by Trump's team. Everything he says is so slanted. He refers to a speech Trump gave at Mt Rushmore as one of the best speeches ever by an American president. He refers to WWII "our soldiers prevailed against the most evil socialists in the world" --- he's referring to Nazi's as"socialists" it's the typical republican playbook to conflate liberals with what they are doing--which is taking pages right out of Hitler's playbook. The complete and utter gaslighting of their followers.
Meadows and Trump can't believe that people like Biden because the Biden campaign wouldn't have reckless rallies during covid like Trump did. He refers to "Q anon" as a little known conspiracy theory. He trots out all the old saws like "boxes of ballots" being pulled out of trucks--even though this has been proven to be false. Meadows refers to the Supreme Court, after they throw out trumps challenges, as establishment politics, even though trump appointed 3 of them and the majority of the court was appointed by Republican presidents.
Meadows also said trump would be a lunatic if he didn't question the results, he also fails to acknowledge that long before the election ever happened Trump said he wouldn't concede. Trump never had any intention of a peaceful transfer of power, bc he never planned to step down--losing or not.
Overall, this book was terrible, but I'm glad I read it just to see what conservatives are lapping up. And its worth noting that when Mark Meadows was a congressman, he had his official bio list him as having a BS from FSU when he actually had an associates degree. It's so typical.

This Man Knows Trump

Okay. I know this was written by one of Trump's biggest fans and not by a supposedly unbiased journalist. But we all know there is no more unbiased journalism in America. So many of those other books about Trump, which make him almost look like a lunatic, are based on rumor and one-sided reports of what happened at the White House, just as one-sided as this book is.

Don't believe what Mark Meadows writes if you don't want to believe him. But don't believe any of the "nonsense" (See the old David Steinberg routine for the true meaning of that word) that comes out of the negative Trump books either.

Mark Meadows relates, with feeling and candor, various events from that last year in the Trump White House. He is a humble participant in these events. And his perspective is vital for all of us to read.

And, yes, he does explain eventually why he still thinks plenty of evidence exists to challenge the legitimacy of Biden's election in 2020. People I have spoken with who ridicule that perspective as much as does the media have not bothered to listen. What they don't know about it boggles the mind.

I'm not here to assert that the 2020 election was rigged, though media bias against the Trump campaign is obvious at the very least, but to plead with anybody who still distrusts Trump to read Mark Meadows' account of working for the man.

Don't just believe what people write about him without reading opposing viewpoints.

Read this book.

I stay away from many political books as current television media generally keeps me well informed. However, I chose to read this book as I enjoy memoirs and admire the author the author, Mark Meadows, a former congressman from my adopted state of North Carolina and former Chief of Staff to President Trump. Meadows, like President Trump, is a bold straight shooter and throughout his memoir he does not mince words when recording history.

Side note: A prologue sets the tone for a book. In his prologue Meadows focus of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley covered 3 of the 9 pages. One reference stated ”President Trump did, however, reserve special scorn for General Mark Milley, who, as of this writing, is still on his apology tour of the country, trashing the president.” I have similar thoughts regarding General Milley, who grew up in Winchester, Massachusetts. My paternal grandfather, who was born in Denmark grew up in Winchester and like my father graduated from Winchester High School, whereas Milley attended private school. My grandfather served on the front lines in France with the Marine Corps infantry in WWI and my father actively served several years with the army in the Pacific Theater in WWII. Both have their names inscribed on the Winchester Veterans Memorial wall. General Milley with all his medals cannot claim the bravery and heroism that my grandfather displayed in combat.

Behind the Scenes

Mark Meadows has done a phenomenal job of bringing the last months of the Trump administration to light, the incredibly difficult job of the President's Chief of Staff, the uncanny humor of 45, and the strength, resolve, courage, and determination the 45th President of the United States delivered every single day of his presidency to make sure citizens under his watch slept easy at night.

If the truth had been reported by the mainstream media, every citizen of this great country would understand how much President Trump accomplished in a mere four years. Meadows minced no words to reaffirm exactly what transpired over those years, and especially the last year when Meadows was Trump's right-hand man, when the mud-slinging was aimed at him as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though the lies spewed to the American people by mainstream media were much worse than I ever imagined. Mark Meadows was an extraordinary Chief of Staff to an incredible Chief.

Someday, the world will come to understand all 45 accomplished, the strength and power he brought back to America and the American people. History will prove he indeed made this country great again. Imagine what he could have accomplished if he'd been given the next four years.

Well done, Mr. Meadows. Well done.

I wanted desperately to understand what this man saw and heard as Chief of Staff to a President. Running a government, developing policies, negotiations, national security, economic recovery, pandemic reactions, etc. are serious business meant for serious people. Over the years, I have read many books by political thinkers. Sometimes I agree and sometimes I don't. However, I always appreciate the presentation of the ideas, their choices, and why they made the decisions they did. This is NOT one of those books.

When events are described by this author that I witnessed live, I realized this is a work of fiction. He does not even bother to dive into the background information that isn't readily available from other sources. Everything is surface information and poorly done. As I continued to read how the 45th President made just the right move at just the right time (any wrong move was someone else's fault), I thought of another fictional story written by George Orwell called 1984.

This book is a glossy propaganda biography for the 45th POTUS. In 100 years, perhaps someone will believe what is written. It is not a serious story of the work and life of the Chief of Staff. If you want to learn and understand history, don’t bother with this book.

If Meadows intended his book as a work of fiction, I would likely have given it 1.5 ⭐. As its marketed a a non - fiction memoir, it deserves 0.5⭐. I will not dignify my opinion with examples of fact, the evidence is insurmountable. Anyone requiring proof that this book is littered with lies, is likely deaf to reason. What is deliciously thrilling to observe, will be seeing the about face of those sycophants who initially lauded Meadows as a truth-teller and the great defender of the insane ex president, given that he has today flipped and turned state witness against the criminal ex president Trump. 🤣

Refuse to read, let alone pay money for this traitor’s book KNOWING he refused to testify at the Jan 6th Committee hearings! He could have ended the chaos and prevented the ensuing firestorm by coming forward IMMEDIATELY. He KNEW better. Instead, Meadows got shafted by Trump too! So, to finance his enormous legal financial obligations not to mention, feed his lust for notoriety and pad his greedy rear end, and avoid DOING the RIGHT thing, he does…NOTHING. DO NOT pay a dime for this trash. Meadows, Trump and the republican party’s blind ambition for power and money is despicable. The fact this book exists is proof.

Fresh off Cassidy Hutchinson’s book “Enough”, I had to confirm, corroborate, or refute some of her points. Who better to do so than her boss, Trump’s (4th?) Chief of Staff. The way she presented her book, she was an integral member of his presidency and yet no other book I’ve read - and I’ve now read TWENTY-NINE (29!) - about the Trump administration has ever mentioned her. Not one. Surely someone so close to the president would be mentioned. So, even though I did not want to read this book, I thought it the best way to check her’s.

Do you know how many times Meadows mentions Hutchinson, his alleged chief of staff? None. Not once. No mention of her whatsoever. Now, that doesn’t mean her work is false or wrong. But maybe exaggerated a bit? Perhaps. I’ll have to keep reading, though I’m running out of books…

Truthfully, this one was not great. It was more a book written to stay in Trump’s good graces, I expect. It offered nothing new, nothing “insider”, and nothing really from his perspective. I suspect a ghost writer, but what do I know? Either way, I found it neither useful nor enlightening. An interesting puzzle piece to find, though pretty unremarkable.

Syco. Wear gloves. You can smell the poop that Meadows had on his hands from wiping his nose after kissing Donald J Trump's ass. Multiple kisses. A veritable orgy of ass-kissing. I bet Donald J Trump actually loves it, despite his denunciation. Just think of the amount of toilet paper he doesn't need to buy when Special Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs Cassidy Hutchinson's former boss's nose does all that wiping. Kiss kiss.

I’m glad I read this book to get Mr. Meadows’ perspective. Having said that, this book contained factual inaccuracies, Trump bootlicking and general contempt and sarcasm which is inappropriate but on brand for Trumpism. Sometimes I felt like he was only writing for an audience of one- Trump. He could have told a nuanced story about the ups and downs of working in the White House but he didn’t seem to want to tell that story. Again, I don’t view the time spent reading the book as wasted because I want to read all kinds of perspectives, but this was a wasted opportunity.

If I could give this zero, I would. This book is garbage from page one. I wanted to compare it against the information in Cassidy Hutchinson’s book. Spoiler alert: I believe Cassidy. As of today, the publisher has filed suit against Meadows because they say it is full of LIES. The publisher wants the advance plus damages. Hope the publisher gets millions. Don’t waste your time. Great Insights to a Most Insightful President

The book is written in a direct and plain spoken manner, making the reader feel part of the events and tempo of the last 10 months of the Trump presidency. And if things continue as they have been during this Biden administration, Joe Biden will be casting the first vote for Trump 2024.
