Prudence Aldrich is a sex addict. Five weeks ago, she checked into the Serenity Hills rehab center to prevent that addiction from ruining every important relationship in her life. Now Prue must face the trail of destruction she left behind, including mending the broken bond with her teenage son, finalizing the divorce with her husband, Nick, and using a newly learned set of skills to ward off her insatiable cravings for male attention—a compulsion that puts her friendship with lifelong pal Lily to the test.
Adding ever further complications to the hurdles in her path is the arrival into town of Alistair Prescott, her in-rehab romantic obsession, and the one person in the world most capable of throwing Prue off her recovery. Meanwhile, Serenity Hills counselor Mike Sullivan is undergoing a crisis of his own—one that will drive him to the rediscovery of a lifelong passion . . . and causing him to cross paths again with Prue, his former patient.
A Dress the Color of the Moon tracks the rocky and sometimes disastrous path to recovery—a recovery that will require Prudence and her friends to face down the demons of their pasts while learning to accept the fearful uncertainty that comes with living life on your own two feet.
Jennifer Irwin’s debut novel, A Dress the Color of the Sky, was published in 2017 and has received rave reviews, won seven book awards, and was optioned for a feature film. Jennifer’s short stories have appeared in numerous literary publications including California’s Emerging Writers: An Anthology of Fiction. Jennifer is represented by Prentis Literary and currently resides in Los Angeles.
Could there be anyone who walks this Earth today who has not had a number of challenges in their life? I would think not... life is hard! However, not everything in life is created equal. There are people who walk amongst us each day whose struggles are so profound and horrific that it is truly amazing they remain upright. A true testament to the human spirit. Prudence Aldrich is just one such individual. Freshly released from the "shielding walls" of rehab, Prudence must once again confront the demands and temptations of life head on. Will the pain of her past continue to define her existence? Or will Prudence find the resolve and inner-strength which is needed to climb out of this dark and cavernous pit? A Dress the Color of the Moon is a top pick for anyone who wants a front row seat into a raw and authentic portrayal of the human experience and the undeniable strength of the human spirit.
Essentially, the book is a follow-up to A Dress the Color of the Sky and picks up where it left off. Prudence has just been released from Serenity Hills rehab center where she was being treated for sex addiction. She must now take her newly learned skills and apply them to regular life. That is easier said than done after spending a good portion of her life letting the impulses and demons dictate her every step. Prudence returns to a failed marriage and an abandoned son who has been caught in the crossfire. This is coupled with a well-meaning but overbearing best friend and the reappearance of a charming and conflicted romantic interest with whom she met at the rehabilitation clinic. The perfect setup for failure! Can Prudence overcome the persistent urges and impulses which will give her that momentary escape and release she so desperately craves? Or is a return trip to Serenity Hills really just a foregone conclusion?
Without a doubt, the plot of this novel pulled me right in without mercy. At first I thought that was due to my own struggles and challenges. After all, we are always drawn first to that in which we can relate. However, that was not it. Instead, it is due to the writing which is beautiful, elegant and engaging. It travels back and forth through time so seamlessly that you truly feel as if you are there within the pages of the book. Experiencing the joys and hardships right along with Prue and crew. So vivid that you can actually taste it! Once the reader becomes immersed in this story, they are just unable to leave.
While the plot of this novel is mesmerizing... this really is a character driven novel. The human condition is meticulously examined as we explore the innermost thoughts of the various characters. Without these real, authentic characters, the story would not resonate with the sheer power in which it does. While we delve into Prudence the most, we are still able to explore the minds and motivations of other characters such as Mike and Alistair. They are beings with their own hopes, dreams and flaws. In essence... they are decidedly real.
All in all, A Dress the Color of the Moon is given my highest recommendation. The writing flows beautifully and the author has an uncanny ability to make meaningful connections with the reader's own thoughts and dreams.
"A Dress the Color of the Moon" is the inspiring tale of Prudence, fresh out of rehab, struggling to renter the world which is both familiar and totally strange to her given her newfound perspectives and insights gained during her time away. While hoping that rehab would help her learn to control her sex addiction and give her tools to move forward in her life, Prue soon discovers that the experience has affected her in ways she could never have imagined.
The book explores Prue's innermost thoughts, feelings, fears, regrets, resentments, and demons, as well as those of several others who were in rehab with her. It also address how a person's life' particularly an addict's, can affect all of those around them, in many ways, big and small. Prue's journey reminds us that we are both the sum total of our personal constitution and all of our experiences, but that we are not - and should not - be defined by them, solely. From darkness there is light. From despair there is hope.
As an addict in recovery for nearly 15 years, having experienced rehab twice, I found the book frighteningly accurate in its account of the journey and portrayal of the mental, emotional, and spiritual journey that one takes when facing the world, anew. The overwhelming feelings of fear, anger, frustration, guilt, sadness, remorse, resentment, futility, and so many more can give way to sense of optimism and hope once we peel back the layers of the onion and expose our true selves. Prue discovers these very things. Jennifer Irwin deftly takes the reader on a journey with Prue as she wades through, with heavy feet, the muck that was her life until Prue can finally see and feel a change, a lightness, as she sheds that which is weighing her down and begins to find hope, calm, and optimism. Peace may be attainable, truly.
I read "A Dress the Color of the Moon" straight through in less than twenty-four hours. I intend to read it again, and again, starting as soon as this review is posted. Although I have not read her previous book, "A Dress the Color of the Sky," I am ordering that too.
"A Dress the Color of the Moon" is a must read for anyone who has experienced addiction in their own lives or in the lives of those close to them. The novel is written in an unapologetic and accurate way; yet, it is inspirational and uplifting. For those fortunate enough to have not experienced addiction close up and personal, reading this book will help you better understand the myriad, complex issues involved.
After 55 years of reading, I have found my new favorite book!
Who among us walking this Earth today has not faced a number of challenges in their lifetime? I would think most of us have... we live a challenging life! It's a fact that not everything in life is equal. It is truly amazing that people who walk among us every day are able to remain upright despite facing such traumatic odds. Humanity is truly amazing. I think Prudence Aldrich is an excellent example. Her treatment for sex addiction at Serenity Hills rehab center just ended, and she is now free to go home. Prudence must confront the demands and temptations of life once again, fresh from rehab's "shielding walls.". What will become of Prudence now that she is free from rehab's controls? Is Prudence going to be able to rely on her resolve and inner strength to make it out of this deep, dark hole? If you want to get up close and personal with the human experience and understand the human spirit, A Dress the Color of the Moon is the book you've been looking for. My interest in this novel was immediately piqued by its plot. My own struggles and difficulties at the time made me believe that this was the reason for my intrigue. Our first attraction is always to what we can relate to. This wasn't the case in this case. The writing is beautiful, elegant, and engaging, which is the real reason for this. You get a sense of being there with it as it skips back and forth through time seamlessly. Being right there with Prue and crew in all the ups and downs. A real eye-opener! It is impossible for the reader to leave the story once they have become immersed in it. Despite the captivating plot in this novel, much of the story is centered around its characters. While we explore the innermost thoughts of various characters, our eyes are drawn to the human condition. The story would not have such a powerful resonance if these characters were not real and authentic. Although the focus is on Prudence most of the time, other characters like Mike and Alistair are still explored and their motivations examined. Every individual has their own hopes, dreams, and flaws. At the end of the day, every single one of them exists.
A DRESS THE COLOR OF THE MOON is a truly amazing book. Written by the brilliant author, Jennifer Irwin, MOON takes you on a wild journey through the past and present of Prudence Aldrich. Struggling with addiction and codependency, Prue seeks understanding, forgiveness, and, ultimately, redemption. Over the course of the book, you will enter into her most intimate thoughts and know her temptations and hopes, her failures and wins. And you will meet a rich cast of characters that have touched Prue's life. Some of them you will love; some you will despise; and some you just won't understand. There are so many twists and turns, you will be surprised in every chapter.
When I received an advance copy of MOON, I simply could not put it down. I read the entire novel in less than 12 hours and loved every word. The ending reminded me of a happier version of The Great Gatsby.
MOON is the sequel to Irwin's earlier brilliant work, A DRESS THE COLOR OF THE SKY, which I'd previously read. If you've read SKY, you will be so excited to read MOON. If you haven't read SKY, go buy it! But even if you haven't read SKY, you will LOVE MOON.
I read Irwin's debut novel and enjoyed it so I was super excited to be on Suzy tour for book number two. I really enjoyed it as well, very well written and hard to put down, This is one that I would recommend for a cozy evening read. 4 stars from this avid reader. The Mary Reader received this book from the publisher for review. A favorable review was not required, and all views expressed are our own.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book but that in no way reflects my honest review.
One thing that stuck out for me was that although this was a sequel, you could easily read it as a stand alone and still enjoy it.
I dove in to this one, as I loved the first one (a dress the color of the sky). Prudence is back again, this time she has to deal with her sex addiction outside of the Serenity Hills rehab center.
Although I can personally identify and connect with Prue’s childhood and the trauma she experienced, such a personal connection is not needed to love this book. You just have to be human. The writing flows beautifully and alternates between the past and present in an entirely seamless fashion.
A dress the color of the Moon is a gorgeously written character-driven novel. Just like real human beings, the characters are dealt a certain hand in life. Some hands are good ones, others aren’t. How characters play out their hands determines their fate. It is the experience of that fate, as strongly as we can feel it, that we follow as we read. I was really into what was going to happen between Prue and her son, and even with her ex husband Nick. I hated him and how he was abusive, which says a lot about the writing style.
The ending was really beautiful, and left me wanting more. Maybe a third book (A dress the color of the Stars?)
This book is truly one of my all-time favorites! I will NOT b giving it away, as I want to keep track of who has read it! It’s that important!
We all have a part of ourselves that feels we are less than perfect! Obviously, Jennifer’s characters have more than the norm, but who am I to say? They all pop off the pages and become so real you end up cheering for their progress! Her first book was great, but this one took my breath away!
The follow-up to A Dress the Color of the Sky is finally here. And yes, it was worth the wait.
Prudence Aldrich is a sex addict fresh out of 5 weeks of rehab. She learned a lot at Serenity Hills. She faced quite a few demons and struggled to maintain her control over that addiction.
Five weeks isn’t going to magically cure her. She knows this in her head. But a lifetime of building walls, and being out of control, acting impulsively, and expecting to be hurt will not be easy to overcome.
When Prudence comes home to a new house that Lily has obtained for her and Christian, Prue is annoyed and grateful. Lily plays a big part in this book and her story goes a long way in explaining her own need for control and the firm friendship she has with Prue.
While Prudence settles in with Christian and goes back to work at the design firm, every day is a test. Every day she must decide to make good decisions, to go to meetings, and to stay away from men. That one is hard since a lot of how she sees herself is caught up in sex.
You don’t just wake up one day and become an addict. Of anything. That behavior comes much earlier in life. Whatever trauma you go through as a child, you carry with you forever. You find tools that help you cope and they are not usually the healthy kind. Prudence falls and lets herself down a lot. But she gets back up and keeps trying. When you grow up feeling less than, you grow up thinking everyone has their life together except you.
Everything is more complicated when Alistair shows up. Yes, he is a hottie with a British accent that makes Prue drop her pants around him. But he has way more problems than either of them understand yet. And while her emotional growth really comes through with this guy, she is still vulnerable.
In the meantime, Mike is having his own troubles after the death of Gloria. He is questioning his path as well. Can all of these beautiful but flawed people ever be free of the past?
Abuse comes in many forms. But it’s all abuse. And as a child that shapes our view of ourselves and the men and women in our world. You can put on a facade of perfection but inside you still feel unworthy and broken. We judge ourselves so harshly.
This book is raw, gut-wrenching, heartbreaking and it resonated with me so much so that I read it three times and made copious notes! I sobbed over this sentence. “All of this stemmed from feeling less than as a child”. That was an arrow to my heart.
I have been in therapy for years. All of my sisters have. And it did nothing. I shared the first book with my sister and it changed our lives. We don’t have to be perfect for someone to love us. We can mess up as many times as it takes and someone will still love us unconditionally. We can break the chain with our own families. We are enough. That and so much more touched me deeply.
I am hoping we hear more about Prudence and the imperfect and yet perfect cast of characters in her world.
Jennifer Irwin bleeds her story onto the pages for all of us to see and know that we are not alone and for that, I will be forever grateful.
This story takes us on the complicated journey of Prudence Aldridge fresh out of rehab and struggling with sex addiction. This was so much more than I was expecting going into it. I liked the other characters stories too and ofcourse the hot British guy who Pru just can't help herself when he's around. I was rooting for Pru all the way. Sex addiction is so much more than people realize. And the reasons that cause some to have this addiction. I read this straight through. What a thought provoking great read .
First off, the cover and the title of this book tugs at your curiosity, begging you to pick it up and devour it. Once you have opened that cover, you are done for. This is one that will keep your attention. It is heart wrenching, emotional, shocking, joyful, and there is hope at the end of a very dark tunnel. Jennifer Irwin has developed deeply layered characters, that are flawed in some way. They are all struggling to be free of their addiction, but that addiction is hard to escape when it is constantly on their mind. Will they be able to deal with the outside world, everyday stresses, without turning back to their one comfort?
Prue is leaving the security of Serenity Hills and about to confront all the problems she left five weeks ago. The weight of her relationship with her son and her husband is the first obstacle she must overcome, without falling back on her crutch, sex. You will get a front row seat of Prue growing, learning, and being able to accept herself as she is. That is the trick, being able to love yourself for who you are. Easier said than done. She will test her friendships, put herself in bad situations, and finally be able to see clearly for the first time in a long time. You will be cheering for her and yelling at her, as she pulls herself along the road of recovery.
I loved reading the journey of Prue. The highs, the lows, the emotions, the guilt, and the sheer strength it takes to overcome is astounding. This will make you hold your friends tighter and your family closer. You never know who needs you or when you will need them the most. Thank you to Jennifer Irwin, Kate Rock Book Tours, and Glass Spider Publishing for sending me this powerful, thought provoking read. I now need to read the first book, since I can never read books in order!
Prue has just been released from rehab, treated for sex addiction. As she faces life again, she has to accept failure and past trauma, learning to love herself. An inspiring testament to overcoming and finding your strength.
A Dress the Color of the Moon by Jennifer Irwin is an emotional character driven story that addresses the subject of sex addiction.
Prudence has just been discharged from 5 weeks in rehab. While rehab is extremely difficult, repairing the relationships she left behind were equally as difficult.
Prudence (Prue) story is raw and real. She is complex, complicated, and imperfect.
Recovery, whether sex addiction, alcohol or drugs is a sensitive topic.
The author does a wonderful job in addressing all of the issues and emotions that affect not only the person in rehabilitation but also all the people in the addicts' life.
I was lucky to read an ARC of this book so that I could provide an honest review. I feel so privileged because this book and the series are absolutely going to catch on fire!!!
It had been a couple of years since I read the first of the DRESS books, “A Dress the Color of the Sky”, and I wondered if I would remember enough detail or if I would be lost. I soon realized that this is a stand-alone sequel. As a bonus from reading the first book, the characters felt like old friends. The writing is so character driven that I craved to catch up with the personal details of their lives. The author has a gift of grabbing the reader right from the beginning and not letting go … allowing you into places you’re not sure you should be but you can’t look away. The human experience within is complex and fragile, putting us through real, raw, emotional moments throughout the story.
There are so many thought-provoking descriptions that I actually kept a notebook nearby so I could jot them down. Here are a few …
“The unwanted addict crept in, invading my mind like a worm burrowing a hole in my brain. A cunning worm who will try to squeeze its way into any crack in my armor.”
“The duck floats serenely along the surface, but we can’t see the feet frenetically moving under the water.”
“He unraveled me like a knitter undoing bad stitches.”
There is a lot to know and understand about addiction of all kinds and I highly value this journey through both darkness and light. I already want to read the first book and this book again as I know each pass will bring deeper insight into areas of my own life as well as empathy & understanding of others.
Wow. Just wow. I went into this one pretty blind on what it was about, and it absolutely blew me away. Raw. Emotional. Character driven. Jennifer Irwin's style of writing is just absolutely beautiful!
Prudence Aldrich just returned from five weeks in a rehab program for her sex addiction. Returning home, she must now face the consequences of her actions, her relationship with her teenage son, her lifelong best friend, and finalizing her divorce. To make matters even more complicated, her in-rehab romance pops up in town jeopardizing her road to recovery.
Instantly, I was drawn into Prue’s story. She is just so darn real and raw. A perfect example of an imperfect main character that you just can’t help but feel connected to. The other characters are written so wonderfully as well. This is truly a full cast that you can’t help but relate to.
I was so pleasantly surprised by how invested in this story I became right from the start. The author gives us an inside look at the heartbreak and the beauty on the road to recovery.
This book is heavy. It's heavy in the sense that it reminds you just how precious life truly is. I took my time reading this book because I knew it was going to capture my heart.
This book follows Prue as she leaves the rehab facility to go back home to her family. She must learn how to navigate life and all its distractions while still healing from her childhood trauma. While at Serenity Hills she forms bonds with a few people who become key in her success.
Prue must learn how to communicate differently with the people in her life, and it proves to be a challenge because her own self talk is still healing. She has to learn how to become a mother her son can depend on, a friend who can be trusted, and a support system for those who need her. Reading this story really outlines just how difficult it can be for someone dealing with an addiction. Literally it is about surviving minute to minute, hour to hour. The voices in their head can be the loudest voice at times and they have to be strong enough to work the program.
This book is emotional, it's raw, it's heartfelt. Mistakes were made, lessons were learned and relationships were tested. There is loss of life in here so be aware. If you haven't already - go read A Dress the Color of the Sky before reading this one. That is the first book in this journey and lays ground for how Prue got to where she is now.
Holy hell, narcissistic tendency resonated a bit too hard for me to accept out loud- haha! Yet another relation to this character. Thank you Jennifer for fulfilling all of the character's cliff-hangers from the first novel. It gave me character closure-for now! I was completely thrown off guard realizing I have a Lily in my life and now I want to know more about her. More character cliff-hangers in this book but I can't wait to read or hope to read more about them in the next book?! As of Mike, I freaking knew it! More pages to read, please!
Jennifer Irwin wrote another stay up late, page turner. I consider myself a voracious reader, from biographies, history, mystery, nonfiction, true crime to novels. A Dress the Color of the Moon is an extremely rare and unusual book. Her characters are so thoughtfully human. No one understands this like Ms Irwin. We're all hated yet loved. We all are so flawed, yet in spite of that there's compassion. Life is complicated, messy, hard tragic and heartbreaking. But Jennifer Irwin makes us realize on the flip side of all that and yet at the same time there is caring, weirdness, hope, humanity, love. No one is just "a good person" everyone is many, many things. The talent and mindfulness these characters possess, I feel is how Jennifer Irwin understands people and therefore translates to her characters. Especially her main character, Prudence. I didn't realize Ms Irwin's talent until, at 2 am I threw her first book across the room never to read another word, but after about 15 minutes I had to, needed to find out what was going to happen. I have NEVER had that reaction before. Jennifer Irwin I will read anything you write. This is a story that creates real people. (Although it is a masterpiece of fiction. )
My hope for every book I dive into is to lose myself in the story and the characters. I love it when you cannot put it down and time stops for a bit while you enter their world. In the first book in this series, A Dress the Color of the Sky, the author opened my eyes to a different world and I became a huge fan of Prudence, the main character. I became her friend and want her to succeed. I definitely got lost in the story! BUT THIS BOOOK!!! The author outdid herself this time! I had my ideas on what I wanted to have happen to Prue and her friends, and boy did this story twist away. I found myself mad, concerned, in love, crying ... discussing the story with my family because it did not leave my thoughts. I had to keep reading because I had to know what happens but I did not want it to end. For me, that is the true test of a GREAT book! And so, when it did end, I was hit by that conflicting feeling of LOVE for the novel and complete sadness that I could not keep turning the page. I truly hope this author keeps writing, as her stories are powerful, the characters have such depth (you know they are real people and you feel their thoughts and can see them in your mind's eye), and the story flows in ways you cannot predict. You will be so glad to have read this series - it is a wonderful story!
An absolutely fitting and wonderful conclusion to “A Dress the Colour of the Sky”, which sees Prue in her continued rehabilitation for sex addiction, and her struggle to find self worth. It is a compelling read, and one that could easily stand alone. It is also hard, raw, and open to the reader, in such a way that we can only feel empathy for Prue as she struggles to live, not just day by day, but literally, minute by minute. Rehab is not supposed to be easy. It’s not a simple, in you go for a week or two, and then your cured. The healing is understanding yourself, and finding the strength to embrace the past, and use that to take the necessary steps forward, towards recovery. All the characters are there for a reason. They are as much a part of the story as Prue herself. They give credence and authenticity to a special read. “Sky” and “Moon” are an exceptional read that truly deserve more accolades. In my humble opinion, this would be a box office hit. Fully deserving of five ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars, or should that be 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕 full moons.
"A Dress the Color of the Moon" is the second book about Prue but Jennifer Irwin does a great job of making this book stand on it's own. This book is told from Prudence's point of view; both past and present, along with Alistair's and Mike's point of views. I liked all of these points of view because it helped round out the experience in Serenity Hills and the experience each was a part of after. I enjoyed this story and felt the raw emotions throughout. I will be going back to read the first book about Prudence's story.
A DRESS THE COLOR OF THE MOON (DRESS #2) (10/30/21) By: Jennifer Irwin Published by Glass Spider Publishing
REVIEW ☆☆☆☆☆
Thank you Kate Rock Book Tours and the author for a complimentary copy. I voluntarily reviewed this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Lemons. Bitter, unexpected, sour, unappealing, bits of detritus. Life in yellow.
A Dress The Color Of The Moon is a story of transformation and truth. Despite never spending time in rehab or being officially addicted to anything, I identify with Prue. I have been a highly codependent person, and I am certain the ugly dark recesses of my childhood have heavily influenced who I am at this moment. I am subject to change. I am static, fluid, always tumbling over the rocks to begin again. Are you exactly the same as you used to be? I doubt it.
Prudence (Prue) Aldrich is the perfectly flawed heroine. Fresh from rehab via sex addiction, Prue finds herself at the mercy of change in all aspects of life: making amends with her teenage son, finalizing a divorce, navigating friendships and every other basic thing that comprises day-to-day existence. Easy, right? On the best days, life is still challenging for most of us.
Jennifer Irwin has penned a raw, insightful, unapologetic story that is firmly rooted in reality. Character driven and meaningful, this book is not for the faint of heart. Prue is a powerful woman, but can she successfully trek recovery road? In a timely honest voice, Prue's character tells it like it is instead of pandering to readers. I am glad for that. Here is your life. Deal with it.
Readers will, maybe, view the world from a different perspective after completing this book. Addiction has a spiraling outward effect. Perhaps you have been touched by this disease. Still, even if you have not, there are numerous lessons and much to gain by reading A Dress The Color Of The Moon. This book is well worth your time.
If you have ever had an addiction or known someone with an addiction, you might know the struggles that it presents. This book explores Prudence's struggle to overcome her sex addiction after a stay at a rehab clinic. While I cannot relate to Prue's issues, I could understand how she struggled with eliminating all from her life that could tempt her and undo all of the work she achieved during rehab. She isn't 100% successful and puts friendships in jeopardy because she has a hard time with impulse control.
I did think that Prue didn't try too hard to control her instincts. At times she might have, but there are plenty of other times sprinkled throughout the book that made me wonder if she wanted to overcome her addiction.
I admired her best friend, Lily, for pulling no punches when it came to Prue. She doesn't accept the pity party that Prue is throwing for herself, and she tells her to get her act together. All this despite what Prue tried to do with Lily's husband. I think we all need that person in our life that doesn't accept lame excuses.
There are some other characters that Prue meets at rehab that make an impact on her life, at least for that short period of time. However, they all have their own issues to deal with, and is connecting with each other outside of rehab the best idea? Maybe, but maybe not.
Since I didn't read book one, I appreciated the jumps in time to share part of Prue's past. It gave me a better understanding of her psyche.
This was an interesting book that reminds me to accept life and those around me with grace and acceptance...but not the BS.
I have always been extremely addicted to sugar! I can’t ever remember a time that I didn’t want something sweet. I think my main problem is, I love all snacks in general, so I snack all day and all evening. This year I am trying to work on that! A Dress the Color of the Moon is a book about addiction. Prue Aldridge has allowed her addiction to really control her life and has decided she’s taking a stand. After leaving rehab she struggles with herself as a mother, a now ex wife and an employee. I found myself rooting for her as she tried to really understand why she had these issues. I’ve always said, if sugar was illegal, I would be in jail, because I know I couldn’t stop eating it. The characters in this book were well developed and now that I know this is the second book about Prue, I’ll be picking up the first on ASAP!
A Dress the Color of the Moon was an interesting, brilliant, and thought-provoking novel about addiction and how it affects the life of the addicted as well as those around them. While this book is technically a sequel to Jennifer Irwin’s earlier book “A Dress the Color of the Sky”, I went into this without knowing this fact and was still able to enjoy it.
This book takes you on Prudence Aldrich’s wild journey of struggling with addiction as well as the people who play a part in her life. We see the ups, downs, twists, and turns in Prue’s life and how a character’s actions play out.
This book was beautifully written. It was raw, shocking, gut-wrenching, and heartbreaking. I loved reading about Prue’s journey and I’ll be picking up a copy of the first book!
A Dress The Color Of The Moon deserves a standing ovation!! Wow, did this one hit me right in the heart. It’s originality and uplifting pages made it IMPOSSIBLE to put down.
Jennifer Irwin gives us a story with a soul! One I didn’t want to end. One that will stay with me for quite awhile.
A DRESS the COLOR of the MOON (GlassSpiderPublishing) is the sequel in a series by author, Jennifer Irwin. In the first novel, A Dress the Color of the Sky, Prudence Aldrich's marriage implodes when her sex addiction leads to a divorce from her soon-to-be-ex husband, Nick. She finds herself checking into the Serenity Hills rehab center.
In A DRESS THE COLOR of the MOON, Prudence is leaving Serenity Hills after five weeks at the rehab center. Five weeks may sound like significant amount of time, but Prudence knows staying sober isn't going to magically happen. She's faced her demons in rehab and now struggles to get control over her life and daily difficulties.
I immediately connected to Jennifer's novel. I too, have faced many of life's challenges and have worked hard to move forward. It's not easy. One day at a time.
Prue has finished her five weeks of rehab at Serenity Hills and is attempting to get her life in the real world back on track. It’s uphill going though, even with emotional and financial support from lifelong friend Lily, although that relationship is becoming strained and Prue’s continuing inability to curb her old impulses threatens to scupper it in its entirety. Son Christian is supportive, but his teenage behaviour endangers their relationship. At least Prue knows that husband Nick is unsupportive, and is soon to be her ex, if she has her way. All things considered, though, Prue has support over and above what she has a right to expect, and with the added assistance of a figure from her distant past, the only person likely to scupper her chances of building a life worth living is Prue herself.
Meanwhile, a friend made in rehab is also trying to resolve the issues of their past life, and doing less well than Prue. Added to which, a figure of authority from Serenity Hills, shaken by the tragic events which concluded Prue’s stay at the facility, has moved out into the larger world and attempts to exorcise some personal demons. A gathering of Prue’s group from the centre manages to reinforce the close bonds forged whilst there, but also brings secrets and problems out into the open.
The narrative moves with ease between Prue in the present and her recent past in rehab, in contrast with the current car-crash a close companion is making of their life post-therapy. There’s also disclosure of the early life of one therapist, and how it brought them to Serenity Hills. Prue’s brother Henry is noticeable by his absence, but America’s a big country and this confers a touch of realism, insofar as families can’t always live close together or be there when needed. A similar effect is given to the peripheral character who was unseen in the first book but nonetheless played a key role in events which necessitated the reunion that takes place in the second. Worthy of greater censure than is shown, but perhaps respect for the occasion and the person in whose honour it is held obliges the participants to restrain themselves; not to mention that he’s bankrolling the gathering.
Even towards the end I was worried that Prue seemed unable to overcome her old ways, mostly her need for co-dependency, and I was saddened at the circumstances in which one of the group had to be left at the end. There’s hope for both, though, although it’ll be a good year before they can be felt to have made the necessary progress. Overall, the story doesn’t shy away from the reality of how addictions of any kind may be formed and the strength and struggle needed to be free of them.
I was excited to read Jennifer Irwin’s 2017 debut novel, A Dress the Color of the Sky. I found it to be as good as any first published novel—well done and then some. My review is posted in Goodreads and Amazon—please check it out. If the sky was the limit, she certainly hit it on her first try. I am as equally excited to say her follow-up sequel went beyond the sky’s limits, aptly named A Dress the Color of the Moon. In other words, I found it to be out of this world, maybe even to the moon and back. She hit her target, alright. Irwin’s style of writing is still as inviting and impressive as her first book. For those who read A Dress the Color of the Sky, you won’t be disappointed. Her new novel starts off where her first one ended and has everything you’ll want to know about what’s next—post rehab. Irwin skillfully blends the friendships from her past, with Lily, her lifelong friend, and with her new relationships, which include Gloria, her Serenity Hills rehab bestie, along with others from rehab we’ve come to know, such as Alistair the polished Brit, and Mike the Great Oz, among others. What I like best about her story is the ease at which Irwin brings the reader into the body, mind, and soul of each well-developed character. You know what they’re feeling, thinking, and why they do what they do. You can’t help but fall in love with her protagonist, Prudence Aldrich and the challenges she faces as she comes to grips with life after rehab and a fresh new start with her son, Christian. She’s put to the test often, tempting her to fall back into past behaviors she’s learned to avoid while in counseling at rehab. I also liked the way she went back-and-forth with past and present Prue, the quintessential California girl from Long Island, and does this equally as well with Alistair and Mike. You can’t help but wonder if romance is in her future. The questions I’d pondered after I read her first book were often answered in book two, exactly as I’d hoped they’d be or by a new twist I didn’t expect. Irwin’s new story definitely keeps you guessing and turning the pages for more. I always like to remember certain passages that show off the author’s writing skills, those words that seem to work so well together such as: An electrical current cursed through me. His eyes met mine, our faces illuminated by the moonlight. He inched closer until the warmth of his breath was on my lips. We closed the space between us and our mouths began searching for answers. All my problems disappeared, sealed with a kiss. The golden moon tucked itself amongst the trees, illuminating the branches. Every star I had ever wished on in my life twinkled above me. I felt as though I were floating—soaring, really, above the earth. All the hardships from my past had brought me here, shaped and molded the woman I am, and allowed me to be in this beautiful place in my life. A Dress the Color of the Moon is a fantastic read. I give it five stars! You don’t necessarily have to read her first novel, A Dress the Color of the Sky to enjoy this sequel, but I recommend you get both for your library. You will be glad you did. Pair it with a glass of wine or maybe a pack of red Twizzlers. Those new to Jen’s work, you’ll soon know what I mean.
It’s book 1 finished for the year. Read it straight thru to 5 am! Prue Aldridge is one of my favorite characters. Complicated, sometimes unlikeable but brave and easy to root for. I fell in love with @jenirwinauthor after reading her first book A Dress the Color of the Sky and met Prue. In this new book, A Dress the Color of the Moon, Prue is fresh out of sex addiction rehab. It’s quite the journey ! I loved this book and literally could not put it down. I loved the characters and their own stories. The ending was bittersweet and I am so happy Jennifer Irwin wrote this book! Thank you, Jen!!! Another one that will stay with me. This will be an automatic highly recommended book for a long time.
What I really loved: Excellent flow, alternating chapters of present and past and very easy to follow, raw and unapologetic, emotional and Real, awesome settings, and character development is AMAZING! The friendships were so intricate and real. The research was spot on for this book and anyone with addiction or a friend or family member living with or recovered from will especially adore this book! Jennifer Irwin can WRITE!!! Thank you, friend for the book and being on tour! Incredible Story! The “just exactly perfect” book to start off 2022! I laughed, I cried and I did not miss the Grateful Dead nor the John Scofield references!!! (The author and I share some music fanaticism) 😎
