I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
101 Super Cute Cat Things to Draw is an adorable drawing book all about cats! There's some really cute ideas in this book and I'm definitely going to be trying a few of them out. The book has the perfect balance of information - not too much or too little, and is bright and colourful. I enjoyed that it contains pages for you to have a goat the designs and doodles yourself - I wish I had the physical copy so I could have had a go as I read it as the pages are so cool! There's some fun little facts dotted in the book too. The start of the book gives a quick tutorial on equipment to use, shading, colour etc then dives into the best bit - the drawings! This would be perfect for any Cat lover, child or adult and especially beginners too. So much fun! I hope there's a dog one next!
I had hoped for more examples of actual cats and kinds of cats to draw. This book shows one particular type of cat for the most part-- very fluffy and overweight -- and then shows all different cute things you can draw cat-shaped. For instance, you can draw cat shaped pastries, a cat shaped cactus, a cat shaped fish, and so on. We have 6 rescue cats and I would have thought that I could learn how to draw at least one of them with 101 cute cat drawings to choose from, but nope. There are no tuxedo cats, there are no cranky old orange tabbies, there are no sleek kittens. These are puffy, fat cats in a kawaii fluffy style, turned into inanimate objects for the most part. They're lovely if that's what you're looking for, but I didn't really want to learn how to draw cat shaped toasters and foods, just cats.
Three stars -- liked it, but didn't love it.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.
I am the crazy cat lady who has the black cat, the white cat and a whole lotta kittens but I am not biased in rating this fun cat doodle activity book a perfect 5 stars. Well....
But this got my heart and the already frozen adult creative side of mine that I just had to do it. The reasons?!
Well, look at that cover. It is the inspiration to wake up your idle creative side. No hard and fast rules.
And the basic colour information and the cute innocent designs waiting for you in between the pages. You have to think about it and give this book a well deserved chance!
And the cat doodles. Start counting how many times you are going to utter while you keep flipping the pages of this activity book already!
Thank you, Quarto Publishing Group - Walter Foster, for the advance review copy.
This is honestly the cutest guidebook to drawing adorable cats! I love all the chonky cats in here, and the drawing themes are also fun and creative. It would be amazing to have a physical copy of this book. It's perfect for any cat lovers, even if you're bad in drawing them because the guides are simple enough to follow.
Many thanks to Netgalley for the digital review copy!
First off, the book itself is so cute. I can't really explain what I mean, but everything is presented in the book in a very cute and cozy way. Maybe it's the hand-drawn titles and labels throughout. It's perfect for relaxing and being creative.
The title of this book is accurate, but the description is a little misleading. It really is 101 cat THINGS to draw. And they're all super-cute! It shows you how to draw a cat toaster, and a cat muffin, and a cat cappuccino, and a cat broccoli. If that sounds cute to you, you're right. It's adorable.
What's a little confusing is that the book is presented as having four parts, but the vast majority of the book is the fourth part. Here's (roughly) how it breaks down: - "a lesson on color theory" - 8 pages - "tutorials for drawing popular cat breeds" - 8 pages - "creative prompts for doodling cats of your own" - 12 pages - "a variety of ideas for drawing cat mash-ups" - the rest of the book (about 100 pages) So...if you're picking it up looking for topics 1/2/3, you may be disappointed. If you're looking for topic 4, you've come to the right place. This isn't the book's fault, or the author's fault, it's just a little misleading how it's being presented. That's why I say that the title is actually 100% correct...but then you see the 4 categories listed in the description and think it's going to be much more. They should have just stuck with describing what it is - a super-cute book of how to draw super-cute cat pillows and cat bread and cat dragons and cat apples, with just a little supporting info on drawing cats in general.
Anyway it's adorable, and if you want to know how to draw a toaster cat, this is the book for you!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you #NetGalley and author #LuluMayo for sending me a copy of this fantastic book 101 Super Cute Cat Things to Draw!!
This is such a cute book! Lulu Mayo teaches us how to draw some of the cutest little cat things.
It starts out with a section of using a color wheel. I love the title of one of them "Pawsitively Pretty Pastels". From there on, the author shows up 101 ways to draw a cat. Such as a cat dragon, a mushroom cat, a cat cabbage, and cats drawn as zodiac signs!
Even if you don't draw all of the cats, this is definitely a must-have for all cat lovers!
I swear, this is one of the cutest ‘how to draw’ books I’ve ever seen. Cat food, especially cat sushi completely stole my heart and turned it into sweet mush. I LOVE IT!!!
Thank you so much, NetGalley for allowing me to read this arc. My boyfriend will send you a bill for therapy for all the cat drawings he’ll be seeing in the next few weeks 😂😂♥️
If you love cats and like the Japanese kawaii (cute) style of art, then you will likely love this quirky book. It will not teach you to make realistic portraits of your cats, but it will give you some tips on giving your doodles of cats and “cat things” a kawaii styling and that elusive essence of cat. An assortment of cat breeds is included in different poses with hints on decorating and colouring in and how to portray different emotions. And then we move into the realms of fantasy: cats with dragon wings, ghost cats, angel cats, unicorn cats and feline star signs. And then a Maneki Neko (Japanese lucky cat). So, what you may be wondering are cat things? Most cat lovers will have acquired some of these along the way: clothing including T-shirts, socks, mittens, hats, slippers and more; accessories including bags and rainy-day gear crockery including ornaments, cups and teapots; furniture including a chaise longue and various styles of chair; stationery including pens, pencils, stapler and notebooks; a few Christmas and Halloween decorations. Then there is a large central section on cat food which incudes vegetables, fruits, breads, pasta, snacks and desserts all furnished with pointy ears, whiskers and a feline personality. Oh yes and eyes. This part creeps me out a little; I don’t really want my food looking back at me with a cute cat face. But your mileage may vary, I think I’m in the minority. Throughout this sweet, imaginative book some pages are for colouring in, some show completed drawing to be copied or used as inspiration and some show step by step stages to recreate the art for yourself. This would be a gentle introduction for a beginner to this style of drawing but also has some tips to please someone with more experience and would make a lovely gift which would be suitable for children as well as adults.
101 Super Cute Cat Things to Draw is an adorable beginner drawing guide with tutorials by Lulu Mayo. Released 14th June 2022 by Quarto on their Walter Foster imprint, it's 128 pages and available in paperback format.
This is a how-to book. The sections and tutorials are grouped thematically and start with the very basic tools & supplies, and tips for getting started. Further chapters build on the skills from the earlier parts and include using color, and step-by-step tutorials.
The author has a very friendly and encouraging style of writing and the drawing lessons are not intimidating or difficult in any way. She also includes some tips and tricks to get the shy artist in motion.
The book seems to be slanted to a mostly younger audience, but frankly I see kawaii scientist cats with lab coats and syringes and microscopes in the margins of my "meeting notes" in my future.
Well worth a look, especially if you have a young artist (or wannabe) on your hands. It would also make a lovely gift, perhaps bundled with some art supplies. Highly recommended for folks who regularly interact with small children as well to learn to draw something which will delight and impress the smalls.
Four and a half stars
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher.
As huge cat fan I really liked this book it’s quirky and fun. You don’t need much skill to pick up the drawing tips so it’s all book that would suit all levels of artist ability . There is lots of sections of all different things(colours, ,shape etc) along with really fun sections on what to draw the cats as (food, star signs etc). I really liked how there was space for the reader to practice in the actual book and the step by step guide made doing all the cat sketches fairly easy. There is a cat sketch for everything you can think of, I loved stationary cats…cat stapler anyone!?! The full thing reminded of Pusheen Cat. I think children age 10-13 would be best suited to this book. It’s possible it is just a little too advanced for smaller children and older teens unless very into drawing probably would think it wasn’t very cool, however it is a book am sure all adult cat lovers would love just to flick though for the cute sketches. Note all the tips and guides are all for drawing cartoonish designs rather than real life animals. This artwork in this book is fun, cute and has Japanese cat cafe vibes… I loved this and would buy this for my nieces who love drawing, designing cards and of course CATS
I’d be interested to see the other “Things To Draw” books by Lulu Mayo, wish I had discovered her work during lockdown and not just for the kids.
Ps- We loved learning how to draw Ragdolls, Lulu captured their fluffiness and poses perfectly.
Purrfectly Pawsome Felines for You Illustrator, author and lover of cats Lulu Mayo presents her book "101 Super Cute Cat Things to Draw. Draw, doodle, and color a plethora of purrfectly pawsome felines and quirky cat mash-ups", published by Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster. Mayo touches topics such as "Drawing Cute Cats Step by Step", "Cat Food", "Cat Lady's Crockery", or "Artistic Cats." The book contains plenty of space and suggestions to try out Mayo's ideas and to be creative (it would be nice if these pages could be downloaded in order to use them more than once). Mayo states in the introduction: "If you are crazy about cats, looking for new ways to get inspired to draw, or simply want to unwind after a busy day, you are in the right place. The activities in this adorable book are designed to provide you an escape from modern life to a relaxing world of quirkiness and creativity" (p. 4). The book shows very cute designs and is inspirational. Mayo designated it for cat lovers, doodle enthusiasts, for artists of all ages and skill levels and for those I highly recommend the book. The complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley free of charge. I was under no obligation to offer a positive review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. #101SuperCuteCatThingsToDraw #Netgalley
I really enjoyed 101 Super Cute Cat Things to Draw. It's a fun book, sure to bring a smile to your face. It is what it is, Cats make me happy. I've been drawing felines for years, from realism to cartoons, and this book has inspired many new possibilities; cat-themed food, clothes and furniture. I love all the colorful cat doodles on every page of the book. This book will provide hours of enjoyment.
Lulu Mayo does a great job of turning our favorite feline friends into easy-to-draw characters. She starts by drawing using shapes, covers how to create textures and ends with easy to follow, step-by-step tutorials. I appreciate steps weren't skipped and the results are achievable, which is so important for young artists. Mayo gives examples of some basic color palettes and drawing tools. This book is fabulous! Such a mood booster. I'd recommend this book to any creative cat lover. I would have loved this book on my school's library shelf. (it covers a large age group of age10 and up)
It's hard to be in a bad mood drawing adorable kitties. This book leveled up my cat obsession and I'm all for it.
Thank you, NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group, for providing me with a digital ARC for an honest review.
This is not just a book about cat stuff but it’s an instruction book for basic drawing techniques. The author, Lulu Mayo, suggests 5 implements to draw with, what they’re best used for, 5 ways to draw lines and what they communicate, 7 techniques for adding color and some examples to try them out and combine them; the book is off and running.
After introducing the color wheel and patterns, Mayo brings in a variety of cat designs to practice drawing. She starts with a finished character and goes back to step by step snap shots to follow. Beginners will have no trouble following along. More advanced students will be able to make embellishments.
Following the cats, faces and moods are clothing and household items with feline themes. It’s a total overdose of cat cuteness sure to please the kitty obsessed.
The book is well made using good quality paper that will hold up to pencils and pens. Markers should be no problem if they’re not too wet. I’d stay away from paint, especially water color. Bound well, the book does lie flat when opened up. You could make copies to paint on proper paper using tracing paper or a projector.
All things considered, fairly priced, well written and good content for a specific audience📚
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for an advanced copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book is so cute! Seriously, the cats are so stinking cute and fun to draw!!
As soon as I came across this book, I knew I had to try it. We are a cat family, my daughter loves cats.... I can't draw cats haha
But after losing our sweet Miss Prissy last Fall, I have attempted to draw cats. Nothing fancy or anything, just cute little cat clip art.
This book finally helped me figure out how to draw a cat that actually looks like a cat. The cats featured in the book are so cute, fun and creative! The step-by-step instructions are simple to follow and after a few attempts, even I had a cute cat drawing! My daughter has also fallen in love with this book and we now have lots of cat drawings all over the house.
The cats are shown in normal, every day house hold ways plus fun, creative ways and best of all, it's easy to change little things up and truly show a cat's personality.
I definitely recommend this book and plan to purchase a copy for my daughter!
101 Super Cute Cat Things to Draw by author and illustrator Lulu Mayo is a delightful book, with cute, clever kitty doodles that are (happily!) fairly easy to replicate. “Super Cute” is apt for the title, because everything is just that, super cute.
Starting with drawing some basic cat shapes and breeds, one soon advances to mythical cat creatures (e.g., cat-dragons), kitty mash-ups of whimsical accessories (be sure to check out the “Regretful Briefcase” which cheered me to no end), home decor, and so much more (Calico Bubble Tea? Yes, please!) — there really is something for anyone who loves cats and doodling.
Sincere thanks to Walter Foster Publishing and Edelweiss for providing the digital ARC, which in no way influenced this review.
NB: I, too, am wary of ARC reviews that give high ratings, but I honestly enjoyed this charming book which suited me perfectly; I couldn't find a reason for giving it fewer than 5-stars.
As a foster home for cats and kittens, this book looked like it would be a lot of fun, and it did not disappoint. It was perfect timing as I wanted to find a way to record the different cats that I have fostered over the last 3 years, and as a big doodling fan I couldn't wait to get into this book!
Inside, you'll find fun whimsical doodle drawings of cats in various position and improbable mashups. The book is light on realistic cat drawings and colour theory (as advertised in the description), and concentrates heavily on the mashups. Which is fine in itself I think, as there are plenty of other books and tutorials if you want to learn to draw more realistic cats. The drawings are really fun, and fairly easy to follow and attempt - you do not need to be an art student to enjoy this book.
Thanks to Netgalley and Lulu Mayo for the advance copy of this book, I really enjoyed it.
101 Super Cute Cat Things is a fun, illustrated “how to guide” for drawing a variety of cartoon cats. It contains not only step-by-step directions but also several pages for doodling and testing techniques.
This book is appropriate for artists of all ages and skill levels. I tried a few of the different guided drawings and they were very easy to follow. It would also make a fun gift for any cat enthusiast.
I had not heard of this author/illustrator before but I really like her style and plan on looking into more of her work.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Walter Foster!
Cat lovers who enjoy drawing, coloring and doodling will definitely want to give this title a look. I enjoyed it.
Before coming to the illustrations themselves, there is information in the book on tools and materials, as well as tips on colors. There are then drawing suggestions for everything from Sushi Cats, to Cafe Au Cat, to Cactus Cats, to Holiday Cats and more. All are very cute.
Included are many step-by-step instructions with pages for practice. There are just so many things to create here.
Those who enjoy drawing will have fun with this book. What is nice is that it is not necessary to have much art background or talent to enjoy making these creations.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto-Walter Foster for this title. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of "101 Super Cute Cat Things to Draw" by Lulu Mayo. I primarily requested this title to share with two of my children who are aspiring artists. The NetGalley Shelf app made it super easy to download on our family iPad and let them go to town on drawing. A few years ago, after years of telling the kids we would never get a cat (I am allergic), we finally relented. Our cat is awesome and the kids have gotten more into pampering her and drawing pictures of her. I knew they'd love this book as it incorporates their love of drawing AND cats together. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a fun activity for kids or just wants a relaxing break for themselves.
A ton of super, super cute cartoony cats for anyone wanting to draw a bunch of really creative kitties incorporated into all sorts of shapes and frames. I can't wait to try some of them. There are some waving and horoscopes ones that I won't be tackling but there are tons of others like cat dragons, cats with clothes and accessories, sushi cats (and other foods), cat crockery, cactus cats, stationery cats, holiday cats and artist cats.
The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow and there are some frames for you to fill in. Really a jump start for you to use your creativity to draw any type of cat.
It’s quite the title, isn't it? Looking through the book, though, it makes sense; this was adorable, quirky, inspirational, and full of kitties.
It’s also accessible - you don’t need to be a fantastic artist to get started here. The author shares some tools, color information, and her step-by-step techniques for creating some charming felines. The result is a happy book that makes you smile as well as reach for sketch paper.
Recommended for kitty fans and doodlers of any level of expertise.
eARC kindly provided by Walter Foster Publishing / Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley. Opinions shared are my own.
101 Super Cute Cat Things to Draw by Lulu Mayo is a lovely and inspiring read about how you very simply can draw cats! I am a cat lover and often doodles cats when bored, but they always end up looking and posing the same way. This read shows simple technics that will make your drawings more fluffy, curly, or abstract. Loved how it showed cats as food and star signs etc. Just shows that with a bit of imagination you can fit cats in everywhere! A perfect gift for doodlers, beginners, and cat lovers.
If you are interested in drawing cute cats, this is the right book. This book contains various contents from tools and materials, drawing techniques, and adding colour to make your drawings come to life. Prior art experience is not necessary. All you need is to follow easy step-by-step instructions.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves cats and also looking for creative inspiration.
Thank you #NetGalley and author #LuluMayo for giving me an opportunity to review a copy of the "101 Super Cute Cat Things to Draw" book.
As the title says, this book is “super cute”. It has cats in all kind of positions, even in taco shells! Typically there are several examples on drawing a kitty on one page with blank space on the opposing page to practice. Technically you could buy this book electronically and draw on a separate page, but I think this would take away from the fun. Plus, you can color the cats directly on the page! The drawings do show different breeds of cats, but they are all the cute cartoonish style you see on the front page. If you love cats, then you will love this book!
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is such a cute book!
Mayo walks us through drawing cute cat-themed things from emotional vegetables to cat dragons. The book has simple instructions for even beginners and has helpful tips for drawing cat outlines and adding detail. There's step-by-step instructions, room for coloring, and so many cute ideas.
This is a great find for the creative who loves cats!
101 Super Cute Cat Things to Draw by Lulu Mayo There are step-by-step drawing tutorials for the coloring, drawing, and doodling adorable kitties throughout the book. Cats in all types of situations, here, there and everywhere. Will be looking for the published edition to experience the full enjoyment of this delightful book.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
This a fun book! I love cats but have little drawing ability. I still need practice but I was able to create recognizable doodles. There is a bit of information at the beginning about tools, colors, and patterns. Then the cute drawings start. There’s a good variety of drawings so you can find something you like.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
As a cat and doodle lover, I think I may be spending far too much time doodling cats while using this book. There are cute cats galore- so many different ones to choose from- and the instructions are easy to follow. The book includes sections where you can practice your work by adding colours or details to outlines provided as well as diagrams to show how you can create your own.
This was a very cute and fun read, all about cats and how to draw them. The tone of the book makes it great for kids, if they like cats and/or want to learn how to draw, this is perfect for them. There are quite a lot of different cats and figures (I haven't counted all of them but there may very well be 101 of them!). I liked how there were facts and tips on basic drawing stuff too, not only cats.
It’s really cute, full of creative prompts. My 10 years old daughter and We enjoyed it a lot. I think it’s the perfect gift too someone who wants to learn how to draw cute cats, it would be a great gift to kids. Thanks to NetGalley an the editors for providing us an ACR in exchange for an honest review.
