My father's the president and my brother's the golden boy which leaves me the black sheep. The son who never wanted to be here at all. The white house my gilded cage, and the secret service my prison guards.
I'm nearly twenty-one and nothing about my life is normal.
The only thing giving me life and any motivation to get out of bed is the way he looks at me. The stolen glances across the West Wing. Heated gaze in the private dining room.
He's my father's best friend, which isn't even the worst part, he's also the vice president. Utterly off limits and I can't bring myself to care. Can't bring myself to stop encouraging his flirting, dreaming, and hoping he won't be able to resist me forever.
When not staying up all night writing, J.R. Gray can be found at the gym where it's half assumed he is a permanent resident to fulfill his self-inflicted masochism. A dominant and a pilot, Gray finds it hard to be in the passenger seat of any car. He frequently interrupts real life, including normal sleep patterns and conversations, to jot down notes or plot bunnies. Commas are the bane of his existence even though it's been fully acknowledged they are necessary, they continue to baffle and bewilder. If Gray wasn't writing…well, that's not possible. The buildup of untold stories would haunt Gray into an early grave, insanity or both. The idea of haunting has always appealed to him. J.R. Gray is genderqueer and prefers he/him pronouns.
The Forbidden Equation is book three in the Love Equations series by J.R. Gray. This is a MM, age gap, forbidden romance that can be read as a complete stand alone. I have not read any of the previous books in this series.
When we first meet Liam Hart, he is eighteen years old and near the end of his first semester of college. Liam struggles with depression. He is the son of the Governor of Utah and has been forced to live his life in the public eye. His older brother will do anything to please their father so Liam is left to be the sort of black sheep of the family. Now his father is running for president and if he wins, Liam’s life will once again be out of his control.
Matthew “Matt” Wilder is nineteen years older than Liam. He has been best friends with Liam’s father since law school. He has been his chief of staff since he entered politics and has now been convinced to be his running mate. The potential Vice President, something he never even imagined for himself, always preferring to remain in the shadows. But no one can really say no to Liam’s dad, including him.
Matt has always been a huge part of Liam’s life. But the crush started around the time Liam turned fifteen. And has only grown since that time. It was always Matt’s face in his dreams and fantasies. Now with the secret service controlling his every move, having any sort of social life was impossible. Liam and Matt became running partners. The more time they spent together, the stronger their bond became. But Matt was doing his best to deny the attraction. It would be a national scandal. His best friend’s, and also the President’s son, nearly twenty years younger than him. He had to keep things platonic. But Liam had other ideas and he was dedicated to those ideas.
“Does he know?” “Does who know?” “The Vice President. That you look at him like he put all the stars in the sky.”
This was a very sweet, sexy romance between two people that should never have fit together but were all each other wanted. The heart wants what it wants and these two wanted each other. Liam struggled with his depression. He was starved for human touch. And Matt’s touch is just what he needed. It was all he needed.
I admit I did struggle a little with the connection between Liam and Matt, even though I did love them both. They both were in such an impossible place and yet their feelings would not let them give up. I also really liked Liam’s main secret service agent, Lucas. I loved that he really did care about Liam. He was more a friend than an assignment. The epilogue was super sweet and left me happy and smiling.
is this author allergic to writing foreplay or prep?
the concept was hot in theory but i felt super disconnected from the story and sometimes found it very hard to tell who was saying what and had to re-read certain passages multiple times
This was definitely an improvement on the first book I read by this author, but it also still had a ways to go.
I quite enjoyed Liam and Matt together. I liked their connection and chemistry. Liam is the 19 year old son of Matt's best friend. Matt is 38 and of course, much older than Liam.
Matt and Liam's father have been in politics for years, and just as Liam turns 19, the election happens and his father becomes president, with Matt on the ticket as his Vice President. Something Matt didn't really want, but that Liam's father strong armed him into anyway.
Liam doesn't like his father. He acts progressive in his views, but treated Harden, Liam's older brother, like shit when he came out, although he "accepts it" now. Liam is bisexual, but closeted, not wanting his sexuality to be exploited by his father like he's exploited Harden and his sexuality.
Really, for the past 4 years for Liam, he's been all about Matt. He's slept with many others, but romantically, all he's wanted is Matt. Of course he was too young and Matt never saw him like that.
But as he's 18, turning 19, there starts to be a connection going both ways, and it feels as if Matt is feeling it too, although it understandably takes him longer to feel what Liam feels for him.
Matt understandably resists at first, because of the age difference, him being his best friend's son, and the scandal it would cause as he's now the Vice President of the country.
But of course he eventually gives in. There's some starts and stops, but eventually he's all in.
I enjoyed these two so much that they carried a lot of this. I do wish the sex had been more frequent and more detailed when we did get it, but for what we got it was good.
I guess my main issues are that, when they are eventually found out by Liam's father, it...felt so anticlimactic. Yeah, he had an issue with it and was an asshole about it, but the way the two reacted was pretty calm and collected and standing up to him. Which is good, I guess, but it doesn't give much drama, and when this thing is built up for so long, and is one of the biggest wedges of their relationship, you'd think there'd be an actual blowout with lasting affects.
The dad is never quite okay with it, but he accepts it basically because both have a "fuck off, we'll do what we want attitude" which I guess makes sense for Liam, who has been done with his father for a long while and actively dislikes him, but for Matt, with how worried his was, and how much drama and angst was caused by him resisting, you'd think there'd be a little freak out about it.
In the end it was a non-issue. We get them telling the dad they're going public, but then we never see any fallout from them going public with the public. It just...is. Which is crap because we all KNOW the country would have conniption if they found out the freaking Vice President was having an affair with the President's 20 year old son, which started a few months before he turned 20 at age 19, while he is 38, and then 39.
Man, you read a story about something being "forbidden" then the fall out has to be earth shattering, no? Where's the drama? If they're found out and there's just a little protest from the dad and that's all? Then what's the point of writing a forbidden romance??? Why didn't we get Liam's mom's reaction? Harden's? The whole country? lmao.
It was just too easy, and the easiness just deflates you as you read when the tension leading up to them being discovered is so good and just building and building. Hell, one or two of their secret service agents find out, and they make a bigger deal out of it then the dad, it seems. I mean, they almost preach protocol to tell the President when one of them finds out, and it takes some talking to to get them to not. Lucas, Liam's head agent, almost writes a report on them, ffs.
Also, why didn't we get much of Harden? I know Liam says in this that he and Harden aren't close, because he's the "golden boy" but he has no ill will towards him and still loves him, so why? I don't think we get them interacting once in this entire book. Harden, I know, got his own book, the first book in this series, so why was he barely in this one? If things aren't tense or bad between these two, why didn't they interact at all?? It made no sense to me. Even if they weren't close, it would have been nice to get something between them.
These things frustrated me, and made me give this 3.5 stars, because it bothered me and made the ending not quite as enjoyable as it could have been.
I just wish this had been expanded more, I guess, to include more than these two, and a few other key players like the President and Lucas, who becomes Liam's best friend, basically. It's nice when we get their scene, sure, but some more depth with characters outside of these small few would have been nice, especially when it's characters so in the public eye and dealing with such big problems.
So I did enjoy this, and I did love Liam and Matt together, they had great chemistry, but a few other things could have been improved upon to make this a 5 star read.
Still good, still enjoyable, but needs work in some areas.
I have hope for this author, though, and am open to reading more from them to see if I can get a 4 star and up read from them.
For now, I do recommend this one and found it enjoyable overall. Now, onto the next! :)
4.5 stars. The story got better and better along the way.
Starting something with the Vice President, who’s also your father’s best friend, is a bad idea, even more when you’re father is the President! Liam can’t help himself, he had a crush on Matt since he was fifteen.
It’s almost impossible to get close, everything is monitored. Liam is already the loser of the family, his father despised him. Now he’s isolated from the world. Playing a role he doesn’t want to play. It’s depressing him, and he’s already struggling with his mental health. The only person he has a click with and brings some light into his life is Matt.
They are drawn to each other, they run together in the early morning, and they talk and discuss, only romantically Matt tries hard to keep Liam at armlength. It hurts but Liam can handle hurt if it’s the only way to keep Matt as close as possible. Until Matt can’t resist anymore. It has to be done secretly at all times.
A stolen kiss here and there, some moments together, the tension and slow burn was killing.
I disliked Matt at times, I understood his motives about being responsible blah blah blah. He made up for it later on in the story, oh boy, how he did!
There’s a glorious role for Lucas, Liam’s personal agent. Man, I loved him!
I found it a great read, like I said a killing slow burn, the story was very focused on Liam and Matt, I loved that. Thank goodness nothing political to find. We only see the diners and security about the White House matters, next to the family matters. Matt and Liam are engaging, mature characters, with twenty years age gap, Liam felt, at times, more mature than Matt, they were a perfect fit. It’s quite captivatingly written, with meaningful dialogue, attractive sexual tension and scenes. Overall an entertaining story with original scenery in the background. I enjoyed it!
DNF 50% I’m sorry to say this was too boring to continue. When I read the blurb I couldn’t wait because forbidden romances in the White House? Yes please! After all, Tal Bauer’s Executive Office series is my all time favorite. Unfortunately Liam and Matt were so boring! Their conversations were long and boring, there was absolutely no chemistry and the side characters like Liam’s family, were barely there. I didn’t even know Liam had a mother until around 45% in. Then when they finally gave in to their attraction to each other, the sex scene was…guess what…..boring! (This was my first book by this writer)
The Forbidden Equation - MM (Love Equation Series) J R Gray
Politics doesn’t bring Romance to my mind at all, particularly the battle for the White House position.
Nevertheless here we have two best friends since college and Law School. One, James Hart, Governor of Utah a family man with two grown sons, and his Chief of Staff, Matthew Wilder 38, considered the most eligible bachelor in the country.
With Elections just over the horizon, Governor Hart has just coerced Matthew to run on the ticket as his Vice President. Being his best friend Matthew agrees to help him become the next President.
Liam Hart 19, is the second son of the Governor and he does t get on with him at all. Liam suffers with depression and has just pulled out of College and incurred more of his father’s wrath.
Matthew Wilder has always known Liam and his older brother Harden and sympathised with the lack of fatherly attention his father gave them. He steps in when his friend is being too harsh on Liam after he arrives home from college.
Liam has always liked and respected Matthew and frequently shared conversations on the roof of the Governor’s Mansion. Especially when he was suffering from huge mental stress. They started going on early morning runs together to try to help each other.
Having tried his best to hide his growing feelings for Matthew, it all becomes too much for Liam and he crosses the line. Matthew is torn between his best friend the Governor and Liam, the Governor’s son. Slowly but surely Matthew recognises his feelings for Liam and tries to be the mature one and shut things down.
But Liam is not afraid of what his father might do to him, or what impact his growing relationship with Matthew might have on the Governor’s race to the White House, and he doesn’t plan on giving up his own race for his man’s heart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I admired Liam Hart for his tenacity for what he wanted and also for his struggle with Mental Health issues. Matthew Wilder I could sympathise with because of his devotion to his best friend. I was happy to see him thinking about himself for a change.
I’ve had this one in my Library for a good while along with 200 other books. I’m glad I opted to let it jump up the queue for a change of background from sports and the usual workplace office romances.
This is a standalone in the ‘Love Equations’ series and there are two previous books, one features Harden Hart, the eldest son of Governor Hart.
Hmm, yeah, no. This was a miss for me. I've read a quite a few father's best friend type romances this year, and this is like the boss-level of that trope. It's the vice president (Matt - 39) and the president's son (Liam - 19). It was pretty ridiculous and wildly improbable. I couldn't get a good grasp on either character, and what I did learn about them didn't endear them to me, especially Liam - he was kind of bratty and manipulative. Their chemistry felt forced and, although the sex scenes were hot, they didn't make up for the shortcomings. Also, there were so many copy-editing mistakes; like misspelled words or confusion with homophones. All in all not a great read for me and I'm not sure if there are more in this series, but I'll probably give them a skip.
I was hooked from the first page. I haven't read the previous book and did not even realize there was one until the end of the book, so it can be read as a standalone easily . The sexual tension ratchets up and up, and when it explodes, its really hot. Plenty of dirty talk, too. This may be the President's son and the Vice President, but there's no political content, and no real distraction from the relationship. I didn’t need it, either. Loved it and now have to go back and read the brother’s book!
I really, really struggled with this book. The premise was amazing. I was totally sucked in by the blurb. The Vice President, Matt, and his best friend’s son, Liam, especially when the best friend is the president? I’m all for that. I was so excited. But I quickly found myself struggling to keep going. The pace was really choppy, and it really felt like you actually had to have a fair bit of knowledge of the American election system to understand it all. Because it was fairly confusing how they progressed from running to winning. It also jumped time quickly, to the point where I wasn’t sure exactly how long Liam and Matt were spending together. It was very confusing. Add to that it was a bit of a slow burn, with lots of ‘we need to stop’ added in and it took me until about 75% to start getting into it. Which was where all the action happened. And by that I mean hardly anything. The whole way through, Matt was pretty resistant to starting anything because of their age difference, the fact that Liam was not even twenty when the started, and that Matt is Liam’s dad’s best friend, and his vice president. But for something so forbidden the reaction to their relationship was so sub-par. It was a simple ‘stop that’ and then nothing. Absolutely nothing. No consequences, no real friendship break up. It was underwhelming.
All up, I didn’t feel like this book was all that great. I’m sure someone will love it. But for me this was a classic case of a blurb that over promised and a story that under delivered.
Voto: 3.5 RECENSIONE A CURA DI ELVINO 1831 In questo terzo volume della serie "Love Equations", conosciamo meglio il fratello minore del "ragazzo d'oro" Harden Hart, Liam, li "Reietto" della famiglia, come lui stesso si definisce; e Matthew Wilder, capo dello staff di James Harden, padre di Liam e di Harden, Governatore dello Utah e in corsa per le elezioni presidenziali statunitensi, nonché suo migliore amico dai tempi del college e suo futuro Vicepresidente qualora venisse eletto. Liam, all'inizio della trama, è un ragazzo di diciotto anni che è sempre stato la pecora nera della famiglia. Tanto il fratello cercava in tutti i modi di compiacere e farsi apprezzare dal padre, tanto lui cercava ogni pretesto per metterglisi contro. Il ragazzo, che soffre di depressione e non si è mai davvero sentito capito, supportato, apprezzato e amato per quello che è, ma si è sempre sentito "usato" dal padre per la sua carriera politica e nessuno si è mai preso la briga di vederlo per chi davvero egli sia, oltre la nomea del cattivo ragazzo con problemi di salute mentale; solo Matt ha la capacita di "vederlo" per davvero. Liam ha abbandonato l'università che frequentava dopo una crisi depressiva più forte delle altre. Ovviamente, con le elezioni presidenziali alle porte, la cosa non ha fatto assolutamente piacere al padre che lo vede come una delusione ambulante, ma trova in Matt un alleato e un amico che non lo giudica ma lo comprende e, soprattutto, lo tratta da pari e non da ragazzino viziato. Matthew "Matt" Wilder ha trentotto anni, è li migliore amico nonché capo dello staff di James Harden da tempo immemore ed è sposato con il suo lavoro. L'autor* non c'è lo dice apertamente, ma ci fa capire che abbia avuto ben poche relazioni e incontri occasionali nell'arco della sua vita, e conosce Liam praticamente da sempre, eppure negli ultimi step della campagna elettorale, la vicinanza del ragazzo gli provoca un benessere e una rilassatezza che non provava da tempo. Liam ha una cotta per il migliore amico di suo padre dall'età di quindici anni e sa che nonostante tutto il suo impegno per farsi notare da lui, difficilmente potrà avere quello che desidera da Matt. Eppure i due più si ritagliano del tempo solo per loro, usandolo come valvola di sfogo per lo stress e i problemi di ogni giorno. Più si scoprono affini a livello intellettuale, più trovano nell'altro un amico e un confidente e, inaspettatamente per Matt che non era mai stato attratto da un uomo prima, si ritrovano attratti irrimediabilmente l'uno dall'altro. Be still my romantic & political junkie heart. White House romances are my new favourite kink.
We met Liam in book one, the younger brother of Harden. A little standoffish, but he was also wonderfully spirited and strong. So you knew his story would be a path completely his own. And he didn’t disappoint. He has struggled with being the black sheep, unable to live up to his father's expectations. Dealing with depression doesn’t help either.
The one person to bring joy to his life is his father’s best friend and running mate Matt. Matt is incredible. Thoughtful, caring, and passionate about doing good for the world. He’s living a life not completely his own, but that sacrifice is worth it for the good he can do.
Until the idea of sacrificing Liam’s place in his life becomes too much to bear. Liam helps him realize that his own happiness is just as important as what he can do for other people.
This was smartly done, with so many great parts. From the relationship to political monologues. And of course JR’s usual care for mental health issues.
“When you touch me, it feels like sunshine. It makes me forget how much darkness I live in, if only for a little while.”
Oh my goodness, the longing felt from Liam in this book was woooow. I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, so it was great to get Liam’s story. The Forbidden Equation, by JR Gray, is all about forbidden love, with the MCs being the president’s son and the Vice President. These two have a great friendship that grows into more, and I was happy that Liam got his HEA! ❤️
Highlights: ❤️forbidden romance ⭐️age-gap ❤️longing ⭐️heat ❤️great side characters (I want a book for Lucas!!) ⭐️sexual awakening
This is a smart, sexy age-gap romance featuring a college-aged young man, Liam, who is drawn to Matt, the VP of the US and the son of Matt's best friend, the POTUS. This slow-burn considers all of the obstacles and issues that would be encountered by two high-profile individuals. Still, these two men find ways to steal time together. Although Matt has doubts about the age difference and he wants to be cognizant of Liam not missing out on his youth, the two are very well-matched and greatly enjoy each other's company. This book is medium-angst, tense at times, but with a really strong, passionate love affair.
4,5 stars The Forbidden Equation is the third book in the Love Equations series by J.R. Gray. This book is about Liam and Matt. Liam is the son is the president. Matt the vice-president, Liam's father’s best friend and 20 years older.
I loved their story. It was sweet, sexy, full of feels and very well written.
Age gap, dad’s best friend, forbidden love. The first book in this series is still one of my FAVORITE MM friends to lovers books ever. This one just isn’t my speed as much. Still enjoyable tho! 4/5⭐️ 2/5🌶🔥
I was happy with the first half, where both kept their feelings silent. The last chapters were cringe worthy because of big, serious declarations about being VP or being a life partner. The narrator made the last half even worse. This novel was more often read like a series of statements than dialog or affection. Book #3 can certainly be read without reading books #1 or #2 first. In fact, they are very different. No pleasing parents or details about school in this novel. It focused on personal security and presidency.
"If he was that passionate about the government I couldn't imagine how he'd be in bed." ... ... lol.
I started listening to this right after I finished the other two in the series, realised that it was supposed to be about a nineteen-yer-old and his father's best friend, the vice-president of the us, said "no, no. noooooo." out loud and quit. Then I was knitting and needed something to occupy the remaining 40% of my mind, and picked it up again. I read the worst books while knitting.
I don't know how to say this in a way that makes sense, but this book felt so tone-deaf ? Like they just won the election and the first thing they do is carry on a conversation about why his last date failed. Sort your life out. And get friends your own age. The only good part was Liam calling Matt out when he was jealous. That's literally it. The cover is also dumb and bad, sorry.
My goodness this is a clumsy read. I felt I'd missed something between chapter 8 and 9. The timeline is whacked. Has seasons and then between chapters you think months have passed when it's been a day or hours and vice versa. It's all jumbled. Then there's the speech you struggle to work out who's saying what. It had good premise but was sloppily written and there's some questionable moments with the male anatomy too.
Disappointing. So Liam had depression, which is horrible, but if he was getting help for it I completely missed it, I also completely missed what it was about him that led to Matt loving him.
Romance Reader - per RFS . Oggi vi parlo del terzo volume della serie Love Equations firmato da J.R. Gray edita Triskell Edizioni, e lo faccio senza aver letto i precedenti volumi ma, se pensate che la lettura ne abbia risentito, scorrerete la recensione!
Liam è il figlio minore del Presidente degli Stati Uniti, colui che più soffre il suo ruolo per le limitazioni che comporta fino a sentirsi depresso e tendenzialmente autolesionista. In un contesto piuttosto complicato, la ciliegina sulla torta è la forte attrazione nei confronti del migliore amico di suo padre che è anche il Vicepresidente, Matt.
La differenza d’età e il rapporto di potere sbilanciato tra i due potrebbe scatenare uno scandalo nella Casa Bianca, ma evitare una chimica innegabile diventa sempre più difficile.
Ho apprezzato il modo in cui l’autrice non si concentra solo sulla storia d’amore, ma racconta la pressione della vita politica e il senso di lealtà che Matt prova nei confronti del suo migliore amico, il padre del ragazzo di cui si sta invaghendo. Mi è piaciuta anche l’amicizia che Liam sviluppa con la sua guardia del corpo, un coetaneo con cui cerca di comportarsi come un “semplice” ragazzo della sua età.
Conosciamo i loro pensieri e le loro incertezze grazie al doppio pov (punto di vista) in prima persona e questo permette al lettore di entrare più facilmente in sintonia con i protagonisti, i quali interagiscono tra loro con dialoghi divertenti e audaci, così come i loro sguardi rubati.
Lo stile dell’autrice è scorrevole e il ritmo resta sempre sostenuto, non si sente mai la mancanza della lettura dei volumi precedenti perché la storia ha un suo nucleo ben delineato.
The Love equations series keeps on getting better and better. I just love it so much. I don't know what it is about presidential MM books and why I'm so hooked on them, but I have to say, it's my jam. The Forbidden Equation has just become my absolute fave in this series. I was obsessed with Liam and Matt, right from the start I felt their connection and it's progression through the book. I loved that their romance was a bit messy at times because it made me feel all the more for them. Liam was an absolute gem of a character, so ballsy but also vulnerable. There's so many sides to his character. He really takes you on emotional up's & down's in The Forbidden Equation. His mental health problems hit me on a personal level. I felt every inch of his inner turmoil.
I was absolutely living for the friendship between Liam and Lucas. I would love for Lucas to get a book. He was the best and I ate up the rivalry between him and Matt.
This is an angsty, steamy, age gap and fathers best friend romance, between the President's son and The Vice President. There's a lot of discussion about mental health that might be triggering.
THE FORBIDDEN EQUATION is Liam and Matt’s story and the third book in the Love Equations series.
Liam never wanted the life he was dealt. The only thing that helps him get through his days is his dad’s best friend. He sees him for who he is and accepts him. If Liam could only get Matt to see him as more and give in to their connection.
Liam and Matt’s relationship grows from a friendship to stolen moments to an incredible connection that brings so much joy. I love how Liam and Matt were able to open up and help each other get through some tough times. I loved the banter between Liam and Lucas, Liam’s Secret Service agent. The single point of view threw me off a little at first as I am not used to it but it worked out really well. I can not wait to see what comes next from J.R. Gray and kinda hope Lucas gets his own book in the future.
THE FORBIDDEN EQUATION contains... mm, age gap, political, forbidden, bi-for-you, father’s best friend, hurt/comfort, secret relationship, single first-person point of view (Liam’s).
