Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known by the pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist and essayist. He was praised as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced," with William Faulkner calling him "the father of American literature." His novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), with the latter often called the "Great American Novel." Twain also wrote A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889) and Pudd'nhead Wilson (1894), and co-wrote The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today (1873) with Charles Dudley Warner.
A hilarious portrait of the American pupil through her actual exam answers. Similar to modern books where teachers list funny test results. Twain blamed this on the education system; however if this persists a century later, perhaps the problem is America herself: a culture whose kids effortlessly rattle off sports figures and rap hits, valuing entertainment over knowledge.
His quote : ---------------- "As I slowly grow wise, I briskly grow cautious..."
Their quotes : -------------- "A straight line is any distance between two places."
"The two most famous volcanoes of Europe are Sodom and Gomorrah."
"Lady Jane Grey studied Greek and Latin and was beheaded after a few days."
"The Middle Ages come in between antiquity and posterity."
"Julius Caesar is noted for his famous telegram dispatch, 'I came, I saw, I conquered'."
"Chaucer was the father of English pottery."
"The three departments of the government is the President rules the world, the governor rules the State, the mayor rules the city."
"The Constitution of the United States was established to ensure domestic hostility."
Twain gives the reader a sampling of the hilarity of the book "English as She is Taught" by Caroline B. LeRow. LeRow compiled students' answers on a variety of different topics and subjects, and the results are hysterical.
