One night. I let myself have one night with him after avoiding him for years. But one night was all it took for history to repeat itself.
Cade St. James was my past. He was the boy who stole my heart before he left for the Marine Corps. Now he’s back in Kroydon Hills, and there’s no mistaking he’s all man. A former MMA champion, running his own gym, and taking care of his adorable little girl. And I have to tell him our one night together is going to make him a father again.
Our timing has always been wrong. I can do this on my own if I have to. I don’t need to be saved. I’m a King, not a princess. I can save my own damn self.
Scarlet Kingston has always been too good for me. She’s also always been mine. But now, I don’t only have myself to think about. I have my daughter too. We’ve both been burned before. And trusting another woman, especially one who’s already broken my heart, won’t be easy. But nothing with Scarlet ever was.
As a vice president of the Philadelphia Kings, grown men fear her. And Scarlet wouldn’t have it any other way. This woman can wear as cold of an exterior as she wants, but I’ve felt her on the inside. She’s no ice queen.
Can we both get past the hurts from the past and live in the present? Or are we both just Broken?
I have mixed feelings for this one. I liked Cade and his sweet 3 y.o.daughter (whom she acted older than her age) but Scarlet didn’t manage to warm my heart. She might have been tough and feisty but she was cold. I know she had built strong walls around her but still her aloof attitude made her difficult to be reached out. There was no balance in the characters’ strength. She made Cade look beneath her, while he was not.
As in the previous part, there were so many characters appearing, mainly from the author’s other series “The Kings of Kroydon Hills”, that made my reading life not that easy to follow up with all of them. The cover though was amazing. 😉
I can't believe I let this book sit on my Kindle Unlimited list for so long! I really enjoyed Cade and Scarlet's story and I thought they were so good together. I loved their chemistry and how they were together. I actually thought it was a nice change that they both realized they were young when they were first together and they didn't hold much resentment from their break up. The low angst made a lot of room for there to be some really sweet moments which were fun to see.
I will say however, I was expecting at least some drama and angst from the family and was a little disappointed when there wasn't much. But I know that's just my love of brothers-best-friend drama talking.
I have been dying to learn more about Scarlet Kingston since I met her in Always Earned. I instantly was drawn to her and needed more. Let me tell you, her story did not disappoint. Scarlet and Cade are EVERY. THING. I freaking love them so hard. I devoured their story entirely too fast but I couldn't find it in me to put it down and walk away for even a second.
I love that everyone gets what they want, their hopes and dreams and desires, without sacrificing any part of who they are. Just perfection. I love how even though she is feeling her most vulnerable Scarlet still manages to be the badass that she is and puts her family in their place. I love how Cade knows Scarlet and doesn't let her get away again. These two set me on fire. I am obsessed with them. And that epilogue? DEAD. Sobbing mess. So perfect. I cannot tell you how much you need this series in your life.
LOVED, LOVED, LOVED. This is the 2nd book I've read of Bella's and like before, she had me devouring this book. Loved the plot and the characters. Cade and Scarlet were everything. The attraction and tension between was two was addictive to read. I need more now please.
One night. After years apart, Scarlet and Cade spend one night together, and it changes their lives. Can they overcome their complicated past to find happiness now?
Scarlet and Cade's story is about two stubborn equals coming together. As vice president of the Philadelphia Kings football team, Scarlet is feared by men around her. Former MMA champion Cade now trains fighters in the sport. Things get interesting after their one night together, and they can no longer avoid each other. Sparks naturally start to fly between two sexy people who spend a lot of time together, blurring the lines. To stay together long term, they must confront the feelings that have always existed and their past. I didn't want to put this book down! This book's emotional backstory drew me in, and I cheered for them to figure things out finally!!!
I've loved Scarlet's character since she was first introduced. I knew her match would be a strong man who was comfortable with her taking the lead but could also take charge. Cade is perfect for her. He's all alpha but also vulnerable, caring, protective, and supportive. And, Cade is such a great dad!
Being a fan of this Kroydon Hills universe, I enjoyed seeing characters from previous books and having their meddling but well-intentioned family members give Cade and Scarlet a helping hand.
Broken King immediately became my favorite Bella Matthews' book. It is her best book yet!
I don't often re-read books, but I see many re-reads of this one in my future. I'm eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Broken King audiobook. I can't wait to re-experience this incredible story.
UPDATED TO ADD AUDIOBOOK REVIEW The talented Joe Arden and Lucy Rivers didn't disappoint! Joe Arden is the perfect narrator for Cade. He nails all aspects of Cade personality -- confident alpha but still vulnerable, caring, protective, and supportive. Rivers conveys Scarlet’s hesitation to get involved with Cade despite her longing for the only man that she has ever loved. Together, Arden and Rivers bring us the fiery passion and intensity that is Scarlet and Cade! It was a wonderful listen!!!
Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Trope: second chance Angst: 😱😱 Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥
Cade St. James and Scarlet Kingston are not the people they used to be in high school when they snuck around to be together. She now runs a multi-billion dollar corporation and he is a successful single dad, a former MMA superstar and running his own gym. When they see each other at a wedding, the spark is still there and they agree to just one night. Despite his past hurt of her hiding their relationship and breaking it off when he went in the Marines. But their single night had huge consequences and Cade and Scarlet need to figure out if they have it in them to go again.
UGH - I just loved this one SO much! The storyline was fantastic and relatively low angst considering all that's transpired between the two of them. Scarlet is one bad mammajamma. "I mean, she's incredible. She's gorgeous. She's strong-willed. She's a powerful woman who won't put up with your shit. You've got that whole, alpha male fighter, protector thing going on, but Scarlet Kingston is the ultimate alpha female, and you know it". And Cade really is just perfect for her. The only one she submits to. The chemistry between them is hot and practically tangible, but at the same time they provide quiet to each other. The writing is phenomenal, the side characters, awesome. This story makes you want books for all of the Kingstons and super excited for the ones to come. Just fabulous!
Of all the Kingston siblings, I would have to say Scarlet is probably the one that I had wanted a story for the most. Add in one of my favourite tropes in a surprise pregnancy and Bella Matthews has delivered far more than I could have hoped for, I absolutely loved this one.
Cade has all the brawn and alpha tendencies that you would expect from a retired fighter with a killer soft side when it comes to his favourite girls. Watching Scarlet’s ice queen exterior crack as she fell in love with not only Cade but his adorable daughter too, gah I couldn’t get enough!
Hands down, this is Bella Matthews’ best book yet.
Out of the gate, things were rocky and I wasn't sure this book and I would get along well.
I'd believed each title on this series could be read as a standalone, but that assumption was quickly proven wrong. Not even halfway through the first chapter of Broken King I had to figuratively mark my place with a finger and take a detour to read Rise of the King, the first book in the Restless Kings series.
That actually helped me make some sense of a few past situations mentioned and the absolute boatload of secondary characters presented in this story. But things still weren't 100% clear since Restless Kings is a sort of spin-off series of a different series (The Kings of Kroydon Hills) consisting of (as of now) 4 books about some of these secondary (often mentioned) characters. And honestly, I didn't feel like mucking through five whole novels to try to avoid a little confusion, so I just decided to powered through.
Broken King told the story of Scarlet and Cade. Once upon a time, they'd been young and in love. Until that relationship crashed and burned. Fast forward thirteen years (of no contact) and a night of passion later, and now they had not only an unexpected pregnancy to navigate through, but also a mountain of broken-trust issues and hurt feelings left over from their teenage-years-secret-tryst. Add to that some complicating factors like Cade's three year-old daughter from a previous messy relationship and Scarlet's nosy, meddlesome family.
I'll admit I liked this book better than the first one of this series. The dialogues were better and the tone and mood more appropriate and consistent, but I still found issues. First, the way Cade's toddler behaved and talked were utterly unrealistic. Her dialogues and mannerisms were more suitable to a tween than a three year-old. It was so jarring picturing a little girl in pigtails with the vocabulary and speech level of a kid closer to high school than preschool.
Second, I don't think I've ever come across any books where the characters keep referring to each other by name during their dialogues as much as they did on these ones. I don't know about you, but I don't add my interlocutor's name in every other sentence when I'm IRL speaking to someone, unless I'm teasing them or being sarcastic. It was already plenty obvious which characters were speaking. There was no need to keep adding their names into the dialogues.
And third, the whole "you're mine" possessive BS has always kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Why the need to establish ownership over another living human being? And why do some readers find that hot? I just think it's off putting and toxic behavior.
But I did like both Scarlet and Cade as characters. Especially Scarlet. I'm a huge fan of aloof, ball-buster, prickly heroines who are confident in themselves and their abilities. So I really enjoyed reading her parts.
The first half of this book was great! It had conflict, drama, angst and a FMC ready to take on the world. During the second half, things got repetitive and uneventful. The stakes became considerably lower, so the drama lost it's spiciness. The conflicts began feeling very superficial and were resolved pretty much instantaneously, and Scarlet lost all the personality traits that'd made me love her in the first place.
I wish this book would have gone harder on the grief. That there'd been more enmity and bad blood between the main characters. More push-back from the families. More danger; higher stakes. Like Cade's crazy ex physically attacking Scarlet, there being perhaps a miscarriage scare. And then a type of a-ha! moment where Cade realized the reason he hated Scarlet so much was because he still loved her. Or maybe Scarlet's brothers could have beaten a little sense into him.
This book just lacked tension.
But I'm totally aware all of these gripes I had were mainly related to my own personal taste and expectations. So take this review with a grain of salt. I'm just ridiculously picky when it comes to my romance books.
**I received a digital advanced reader's copy of this book from Social Butterfly PR. All opinions are my own**
Tropes: second chance, single dad romance, surprise pregnancy
Once upon a time, Cade St. James and Scarlet Kingston were teenagers in love but they had to sneak around. She broke things off since he was leaving to join the Marine Corps but he took her heart with him. Now he’s back in Kroydon Hills and he’s 100% man. He’s a former MMA champion who now owns his own gym where he trains up and coming fighters. He also has a sweet little girl. Scarlet is vice president of the Philadelphia Kings football team where grown men quake in fear when near her, intimidated by the Ice Queen. When Cade and Scarlet see each other again at a wedding, they spend one hot night together. It has one huge surprise in the form of a positive pregnancy test. She may be the Ice Queen but is she strong enough to tell him and possibly be rejected? He has a daughter to think about and they’ve been hurt before. Can he trust Scarlet not to break their hearts? He’s always felt she was too good for him but she’s, also, always been his.
I loved Rise of the King but this one went above and beyond. I enjoyed the overall experience so much. From the first chapter, I was easily pulled in and stayed engaged until the heart-warming ending. It was one of those that left a serene smile on my face by the last page. Cade and Scarlet’s chemistry was scorching. There wasn’t as much angst as I usually like but the storyline made up for it. This is my honest opinion, freely given.
I absolutely loved the Kings of Kroydon Hill series and this series (Restless Kings) is slowly becoming another favourite too. The crossover characters from both series were a brilliant addition for me.
Ah Scarlet and Cade's book definitely tugs at your heartstrings. Childhood sweethearts who both parted ways when Cade enlisted to only come back into each others lives with one hot and steamy night together. Scarlet is an ice princess both strong-willed and career orientated. Whereas Cade is easy going and determined to break down her high walls. I loved reading their story and i literally inhaled it in one day. I was completely gripped by it. Brynlee was just a sweetie too and one of my favourite characters. Im looking forward to more books in this series
One night was never going to be enough. Cade and Scarlet combust when they are even in the same room. There is so much history there. I love that Cade doesn’t give in to her but pushes Scarlet out of that comfort zone. He makes her a better person. Scarlet is the strong, confident go getter and I love that in a heroine. These two fit together and complete the other.
Bella Matthews weaves a story of hope and love with a little angst and loads of sexiness. She takes you on a journey and makes you want so much more.
This is only my second book by Bella and I’m kicking myself for not going back and reading the first series. But even if you haven’t read them it doesn’t take away from the story and make you lost at all. I just need all the deets from these other characters.
Book 2 in The Restless Kings Series and we have Scarlet The-Ice-Queen Kingston's story!
Often we read about the alpha male, sometimes grumpy, closed off, super strong and rather scary main man and how they just melt when they meet 'the one', well that is Scarlet!
We know of her through previous books including Kings of Kroydon Hills Series, and she can command a room with single glare. She's grew up in a man's world and has fought hard for where she is today. She's strong, she's passionate about her work and she loves with all her heart....but if you're not family, then she's no interest.
Then we have Cade - the one who got away! The one who is now a single dad to the cutest wee lass and has been in love with Scarlet since they were in high school....man he's hot! I don't think there's anything hotter than a good dad!
Anyway, these two have history, it may be sweet but it also hurts. They have serious chemistry and there's an aura about them that screams they should be together. But as always, there's secrets - can they overcome them?!?!
An excellent read, I'm loving the Kingston family and I'm super excited for what's to come :)
*I voluntarily received an arc and this is my honest review. 4.5
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the second book in the Restless Kings series form Bella Matthews. I have to say if you love a strong female character then Scarlet will be your girl. But she's just not a strong character, she is the boss well the vice president of the Philadelphia Kings. She can make gown men quake in their books with just one look. Scarlet has grown up in a man's world and she learn well as she was growing up and she is fully invested in her family. Lord help you if you're not family because she won't give you the time of day. The woman can love with hall her heart though, is super passionate about her work! This girl is the perfect package for any man but she isn't interested at all in anyone since she had her heart broken and has never gotten over the man either. Not by a long shot. When Cade left for the Marine Corp it almost killed her. But now he is back and is all MMA run my own gym goodness. But he isn't alone. He has a daughter and girls you better hold on to your ovaries. Because he is one of those dads. You know the ones I am talking about that are all bad butt tattoos tall handsome muscles everywhere but when they look at their child they just met. That's our Cade. Now that he is back what is going to happen between Cade and Scarlett? Well you have to read to find out. I will tell you that if you loved second chance romances with some sass flying all around and a female character that is large and in charge in what she does then you do not want to miss Broken King.
I knew starting this so late was a bad idea, just one more chapter turned into 4am but I couldn't put it down, I knew it was going to be amazing but I wasn't ready for how truly phenomenal it was.
Cade was sex personified and then some, he is sweet, tentative and incredibly easy to love *swooon*. From the little bits of scarlett we've seen in previous books I was really looking forward to getting to know her on a deeper level, she always seemed cold and detached, seeing what's under that tough exterior was brilliant, I love her so much. She holds her own, she needs no one and does everything for herself, she's amazing and a complete breath of fresh air.
This story..gahhh I can't tell you how much I loved it, I only finished it last night and I already want to read it again, I'd go as far to say that this my favourite. Bella completely smashed it out the ball park with this one.
Broken King (Restless Kings #2) Written by: Bella Matthews
This book is all about confident, kick a** boss lady Scarlet Kingston who is also known as The Ice Queen. She takes no prisoners and works hard! She loves her family and is always ready to say, I’m not having kids! Yeah, best-laid plans don’t always come true.
Cade St. James is almost part of the Kingston family he went to high school with Becket, he is coaching Hudson who is an MMA fighter and he’s a single father of a strawberry blonde three year old named Brynlee. He also has a history with our favorite Ice Queen. The reality is Cade is the only one who can make the ice melt, even if it is only for one night!
Cade still carries a torch for Scarlet, but can the young love they once shared be rekindled? The feelings are there, the steam and heat are there but is Scarlet willing to try again?
With so many changes in their future Scarlet and Cade need to be honest with each other. If they can be honest with each other maybe this second time love will be the love that lasts forever.
Author Bella Matthews did a wonderful job helping Scarlet come to terms with the changes she will have to make and keeps readers turning pages to see how everything plays out.
***edited to add: Goodreads won't let me comment on mine or anyone else's posts anymore, buuuut I did not steal this review. I read this book as soon as it came on my kindle but just uploaded my review this morning. I have never and I would never steal someone's review. These honestly were my own words, and I liked Stephanie's review because we had similar thoughts on this book. I don't want any drama from romancelandia -- I think we've all had enough of that. I am truly sorry to Steph if it seemed like that's what I was doing, but I promise you it wasn't. I just wanted to be clear on that.**
This was a miss for me. This was marketed as a standalone, and since this was my first book by this author I didn't think much of it, but I definitely recommend reading the other book(s) in the series to have a clear picture of just who everyone is and how they fit in with one another. There were so many siblings and so many friends they considered family that I had a hard time placing who was who. I also couldn't connect to Scarlett no matter how hard I tried, which made caring about what happened with her extra tough.
Overall it just wasn't for me.
**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions **
Oof this was a miss. I know this is going to be a series of interconnected stand-alones, so I didn’t read the first one and that’s my mistake. It’s just that there were SO MANY characters and siblings, I had a hard time keeping up with who’s who. I also struggled to connect with Scarlett in any way. I just don’t like heroines like her. I ended up skimming most of this but I will eventually go back and read the first book in this series.

With every new book and ever new character that gets introduced I get more and more excited for what the next book holds. 🔹 When we first meet Scarlet in the previous books she is considered the ice queen but as we get to know her more in this book you realize she is actually is thoughtful and loving person that just has been through a lot in her life. We get to explore her relationships with her siblings and learn more of what it was like to grow up as a Kingston. She is such a powerful person and not everyone gets to see her loving side, but you definitely don’t want to miss seeing these special moments throughout this book. 🔹 Cade was first introduced in Rise of the King and I immediately messaged Bella and was like I need more Cade! She pulled out all the stops in this book and I fell in love with Cade. He has a lot resting on his shoulders not only is he owns Crucible Mixed Martial Arts and is Hudson’s trainer but he also is an amazing Dad. Brynlee, Cade’s daughter, is the cutest little girl and has everyone wrapped around her finger. I love to see their relationship together. 🔹 Scarlet and Cade have a wild night together that ends with a big surprise! Will this change the way they are together or will the past be too much to overcome?
“Being wrapped in his arms is the first time I’ve actually felt like everything was going to be okay.” ❤️
✨Second chance ✨Single parent ✨Sibling’s best friend
Scarlet and Cade have a past. They were secretly dating in high school, hiding it from Scarlet’s family. When Cade left for the marines, she broke it off as she wasn’t wanting a long distance relationship. Years later, they find themselves in the same room, and things lead to a one night stand. Except, this one night stand turned into an unexpected pregnancy. Both Scarlet and Cade have trauma and stuff they need to work through, but can they work through it together?
Hands down, my new favorite couple in the Kingston series/family. Scarlet is such a powerful woman and is so strong for what she’s gone through. I can relate to Scarlet with her traumatic childhood, so seeing her become the woman she is made me smile and root for her even more. I aspire to be like her. Cade is the perfect definition of a protective and loving father who puts his family first. I absolutely loved watching him with Brynlee, and I loved watching Scarlet and Brynlee’s relationship develop even more. Cade is absolutely perfect for Scarlet—he knows every little thing about her, and the way he’s determined to make sure he’s in it for the long haul was beautiful.
When I tell you that this series does not disappoint!! It’s officially my new favorite, go-to recommendations for people. The Kingstons will forever and always be my favorite fictional family. I keep saying this book is my new favorite or this couple is my new favorite, but deep down, they’re all my favorites now. I’m so excited to read Max and Daphne’s story next!
Now, I’m so freaking happy I’m not sleeping rn. This book was amazing.
ARC.
Tropes: -surprise baby. -Second chance -Brother’s best friend. -FMC CEO🥰 & wait for it: SINGLE FUCKING DAD!!!!!! **kk, this is my fav trope, whatevs**
Now, the book is amazing. Periodt. My review could end there and I just feel like u should trust me. Like the book has it all, growth, struggle, family drama 🥰
I vaguely remember Amelia’s book, but this one is definitely on a different light even when they are part of the same series.
Now, let me continue by saying that Scarlet is definitely my newest woman crush. She did it all. Womanhood, being a successful business woman, motherhood, emotional development. I swear she is so fucking strong, that I was in awe most of the book. There were parts were OBVIOUSLY made me want to hit her or kill her, but I swear they were worth it. Her character developed throughout the book and she grew in the pages.
As of Cade, daddy Cade. Well. He did need his growth and heart been broken, he grew balls as a result and how magnificent they were. I was rooting for Cade every step of the way even when he was the most hurt (without spoiler anything) at the beginning of the book.
And the whole family dynamics! I Ioves reading about Amelia and Sam, about Lenny and Sebastian, and Annabelle and Declan, now after some research I saw that Declan and Sebastian have their own books, but you didn’t need to read them but I can totally see how they could be all enjoyable.
Now, the epilogue got me in my feels. I loved it so much, and I swear I can’t wait for Max. Our grumpy broody big brother in the Sinclair clan.
This story is an instant favorite for me. I loved everything about it. Scarlet is a very successful and extremely independent woman who doesn’t know how to let people in and Cade is the man who’s heart she broke years ago. She doesn’t want to need him in her life but he’s determined to make her want him as much as he wants her. And y’all, he pulls out all the stops and stole my heart along with Scarlet’s. Their story is so sweet with their complicated history and being first loves but it’s also super steamy and so much fun. The epilogue was exactly what I wanted, too. On a scale of 1 to 5, this book deserves 10 stars because it’s perfect.
Broken King is the second book in the Restless Kings series by Bella Matthews and it was such a ride! Cade and Scarlet are all the things you love about a second chance romance.
Each character is strong on their own but together they have that special connection that makes them unstoppable. There’s a lot of push-pull between them and all that tension makes for some scorching chemistry!
“You’re mine, Scarlet Kingston. You always have been. And I’ve been yours since the very first time you smiled at me.”
Scarlet is absolutely fierce but with the weight of the world on her shoulders it was so nice to see her find comfort in Cade. I loved watching them navigate each step of their relationship and especially seeing Scarlet finally find the balance in her life.
There’s no shortage of big personalities and loving, but meddling, family in this story but my favorite parts were the sweet moments sprinkled in. Cade and Scarlet have such a great dynamic and are so deserving of their happily ever after!
Steamy good read! This is an excellent addition to the Kingston series. I have read some of these books. It is easy to get back into the characters and story line. It is like visiting with a friend you haven't seen for a while. In no time you are catching up on what has happened lately. That is how these stories are for me. Easy to love characters like Scarlett and Cade invite you to visit. I love Brynlee. She is a spunky three year old that grabs you by the heart. She is smart enough to know that if she asks her Dad nicely she can get anything she wants. I really enjoy the banter and sexy scenes with Cade and Scarlett. There is a fun surprise near the end too. I want to read Max's story too. That sounds fun. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
We finally get the story behind this terrifying woman we've seen glimpses of in the other books - Scarlett. I love seeing a strong FMC and actually love that Scarlett doesn't put up with any BS. I enjoyed seeing her story with Cade and omg Brynlee is the cutest little kid! That epilogue had me tearing up, along with a few other parts of this book too!
-Second chance -Accidental pregnancy -Single parent -Brother's best friend
I thoroughly enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would!! Before you come at me - I have loved all of the books in this series, however, I really disliked Scarlet every time she was mentioned. Her character was not someone that I would want to be friends in real life.
HOWEVER, the Scarlet of this book really blew my mind! She was nothing like I thought she was. I loved her and Cade’s relationship, but I also loved the relationship that she formed with his daughter.
As usual, the King clan (and families) were great. I love seeing them interact with no another. I really loved Amelia’s part in this book as well - as we see her for the first time outside of her own story interacting with her found family. I’m so glad we got to see more of my favorites (Sam, Bash and Declan).
Overall, this book was awesome and I’m so glad that I was wrong about Scarlet.
Oh my! Broken King by Bella Matthews first broke me and then put me back together but that epilogue… I live for those kind of epilogues. They tie the whole story together and sprinkle it with fairy dust. Cade is what dreams are made of. He is strong, gorgeous, reliable, alpa, and devoted to one woman and one woman only. Scarlet is the fiercest, hottest and strongest woman ever who only bows down to one man and one man only. What can I say? Their journey put me through an emotional state where I dreamed of alternate realities 😉. If you haven’t read a Bella Matthews book yet, I suggest you start with the Rise of The King and then jump into Broken King. I promise you, you’ll be addicted soon enough.
