She's a Chicago detective hiding in a Gulf Coast town. When a dognapping and murder shake up the local community, Piper Sandstone finds herself tangled in the mystery. Now, keeping a low profile is not an option anymore if she wants to survive.
After solving a case involving dirty cops, Piper is forced to hide out in Savory, Alabama until the corrupt officers land behind bars.
Savory, better known as Alligator Alley, is not your typical tourist attraction Gulf Coast town. Why? Because it's home to the three-time AKC champion poodle Victory Cup Valentino, but this year bad things are about to go down. Even before Piper can get unpacked, there is a murder, and the poodle goes missing right before the Westminster Dog Show.
Suspicions run high, especially with two other newcomers with very sketchy backstories showing up in town. But before Piper can get any answers, all hell breaks loose when a body turns up in the bayou and she's at the center of the crime scene.
It seems like at the Crabby Clam Café, murder is the main dish...
Fortunately for Piper, a group of retired ladies known as the Dentures and Diamonds Crime Squad is on her side, and they are a force to be reckoned with. Now, they must work together to solve the crime and stop the murderer before they end up in a body bag.
Red Beans And R.I.P, the second installment in the Savory Mystery Series, is a fun, suspenseful cozy mystery that will keep you riveted to your seat with twists and turns you won't see coming.
Raised in the Arkansas River Valley, Karen McSpade grew up with a fishing pole in one hand and her trusty .410 shotgun in the other. Exploring the creeks and woods around her hometown while hunting with her father kept her “entertained and out of jail,” as her mom likes to say.
As a child, her most prized possessions were her books and her Michael Jackson album collection. These led her to a brief venture into breakdancing and poetry slamming before discovering her true passion, bringing stories and characters to life. Today, she focuses on the two things that still inspire her creativity—her love for food and dishing up mysteries with a dash of humor.
Karen’s novels feature compassionate and strong-willed leading ladies determined to uncover the truth and seek justice. She loves creating stories filled with mystery, romance, magic, and adventure that allow readers to join her characters on their journey, leaving behind the real world for a few hours at a time.
When she’s not writing, Karen’s favorite things are spending time with family, traveling, cooking, reading, gardening, and enjoying nature. She lives in Northwest Arkansas with her family and a very spoiled Wheaten Terrier who doubles as her writing assistant.
Red Beans and R.I.P. Earns 5/5 Dognappings…Entertaining Short!
You don’t have time to invest hours or days in a mystery, even a great one, but you want (or need) a break…Karen McSpade’s “Red Beans and R.I.P.” from her Piper Sandstone Savory Mystery series fits the bill. It is an entertaining short (64 pages), easily read in a hour, with a clever premise of a Chicago hiding out in Savory, Alabama, who just can’t keep a low profile. There’s a quirky crime squad of retired girl band ladies with whom our seasoned cops partners to solve the crime first introduced in “Murder and Grits,” and a bit of angst over the local sheriff who may be interested. Even if you missed the introduction, this installment is still easily enjoyed, but beware of a cliffhanger that leads to the book. That is easily overlooked, however, with the added treat at the end…two recipes: Read Beans and Rice, of course, and Ruthie’s Ragin’ Cajun!
Piper isn't even done unpacking in her temporary home in Savory, Alabama when a Dog Show champion and his handler go missing. Of course she can't keep from doing on her own which makes the Police Chief very unhappy.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is Book 2 of the 5 book series, and it was as good as the first. However, there was one thing unrealistic about the drive time from Savory, Alabama to Chicago, Illinois and back to Savory, stopping off in Montgomery, Alabama all in one day, with time to spare to feed her puppy back home. All I can say is that Piper/Sharon must have been hauling tail to achieve that one. I checked it out on the Internet and found out that the drive time ONE WAY is 10 hours and 21 minutes, and that is in light traffic, with her not stopping to eat anything or using the bathroom.
I absolutely LOVE the Delta Queens and have decided that Rosemary is my favorite one of the group. There was a scene where the other ladies in the group talked Rosemary into going to the beach. She doesn't know how to swim, but her band friend, as well as Piper say they will teach her how to swim. She cries out the equivalency of heck no, because she's afraid some shark or octopus is going to get her and that an octopus might strangle her with all those arms. Her friends tell her she is more likely to strangle herself with that nothing of a swim bra she's wearing. However, Rosemary's attitude changes when she sees several gorgeous young men in their swimming trunks diving and running into the water. Now she has forgotten all about sharks and octopusses because she likes the looks of those guys. She lost her husband a few years back and is now on the hunt for somebody else. Among the other guys she likes are Sheriff Jake and Richard Price, the latter being a selfmade rich man who owns a bunch of banks and is a silver chaired fox. The disappearances of the show dog, Victory, and his trainer, Susan continue, but one of the two's fate is revealed by the end of this section. Even though the drive time at the beginning is unrealistic, I still gave it a 5 star rating. I will be reading Part 3 right away!
Red Beans and RIP is the second book in the Piper Sandstone Savory series by Karen McSpade. Red Beans and RIP is a sweet and cozy mystery that was just as good if not better than the first book Murder And Grits.
I am enjoying reading about Piper a detective from Chicago. Piper was sent to live in Savory, Alabama after turning in some dirty cops. Piper finds trouble on her first day in Savory. Piper is trying to lay low but of course, a case has found her.
Piper with the help of the local sheriff and the Dentures and Diamonds Crime Squad, a group of older ladies like Jessica Fletcher from Murder She Wrote and Madeline Matlock in the new series Matlock.
The Dentures and Diamonds Crime Squad ladies will keep you entertained for hours if nothing else in the story does. But I am here to tell you that Red Beans and RIP has a lot more to offer like a bunch of twists and turns that will surprise you every time.
Piper is still searching for a champion poodle and his handler, Susan Tate while trying to solve a couple of murders. In the middle of her investigation, Piper is called back to Chicago. Piper is thrilled to be returning home. Piper is ready to return home and get back to being herself and her job. Is it over? Will Piper be able to return home for good?
But what about everyone in Savory, Alabama? The people there are starting to grow on Piper. Is Savory starting to become her home? Or will she be returning to her home in Chicago?
That is just as much a mystery as the missing champion poodle and the murders in Red Beans and RIP in Savory, Alabama. Where is the poodle? Where is his trainer? The suspense of not knowing keeps the pages turning.
I recommend grabbing a copy of Red Beans and RIP and continuing the Piper Sandstone Savory Mystery Series today!
Piper Sandstone is a Chicago detective who is relegated to living in small town Savory, Alabama under an assumed name until the dirty cops she brought to justice are put away. So she's taken a job as a waitress, and is friends with a group of retired women who consider themselves amateur sleuths. They're trying to solve the disappearance of a prize-winning poodle and his handler, Susan Tate. But things go south when a body is found and Piper, living under the name Sharon, is determined to find out what is really going on...
This is the second part of an episodic story involving Piper and her efforts to stay under the wire but can't get over the fact that she has crime-solving in her blood. I will say that it is better than the first part, and I enjoyed it much more.
Piper is trying to fit into her new life, but she's finding it difficult, especially when it's obvious that the sheriff is interested in her. She wants to stay on the down low, but knows she wants to solve the crime as well. And that's what brings her to her latest predicament, where she's pretty much stuck in a circle that she can't get away from...
That is all I am going to say, since this is a short mystery (64 pages) and saying anything else might ruin the story for others. However, you should read the first and then this one, as it is a continuation, but it will be worth it to read them together. Recommended.
I received an advance copy from the author but this in no way influenced my review.

When the dog handler shows up dead and it is ruled a murder who will solve the case. I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
Piper can’t seem to stay undercover as the town she is hiding out in witnesses it’s star show dog and her handler disappearing without a trace. She makes friends with a group of retired ladies and observes a clandestine meeting between two people who very well could be involved in those disappearances. The girls gather evidence but then a body turns up in the end of this second of 5 parts which makes the disappearance a murder investigation!
These parts in this series are fast reads and I recommend you get the box set instead of these 5 individual books so you can have this story all in one convenient place. That way you can go from one part to the next without hunting for the other four books! It’s well worth it!
These parts only take a couple of hours to read so you can easily read a book in the evening after your hectic day! It’s a great way to unwind and relax!
I enjoy this series and think it’s a fun one cozy mystery readers will enjoy! I look forward to finishing this series and seeing how things play out and seeing all the bad guys get what’s coming to them!
I said it the last time and I'll say it again. I do NOT like cliffhangers! Yet, I find myself picking up the next book in the series so I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment. While Piper's former life in Chicago is just out of her grasp, her new life in Savory, Alabama is offering up new mysteries for her to sink her teeth into. The characters in Savory are entertaining and extremely colorful and add an enjoyable element to this series. Despite my aforementioned dislike of cliffhangers, there is something about this books that keep me coming back for more and, with that, I must say that I'm very much looking forward to the next adventures of Piper. I would suggest starting with Murder and Grits so you know the who, what, when, where and why of it all. Happy Reading!

This style of writing is not for everyone and I understand that. You just get one short episode at a time and the entire series is one story. However I find that if the story and characters are enjoyable personally I don't mind it at all. Karen McSpade succeeds in creating some fun quirky lovable characters. I still think Patty Sue is my favorite of the Dentures and Diamonds Crime Squad. She seems to be the more innocent one in certain ways but still quite mischievous and always supportive of her friends. Piper can be a bit full of herself to the point it is annoying at times but overall I still like her too, just think she needs to be knocked down a peg or two. I definitely relate to her on a couple things though with hating shopping and having no clue about makeup or other girly things. I recieved a free copy of this book from the author and am reviewing it voluntarily.
Piper Sandstone is hiding out in Savory, Alabama, after an undercover operation in Chicago goes wrong; then before Piper can get unpacked, there is a murder in town, and a valuable poodle goes missing right before the Westminster Dog Show. Then a body turns up in the bayou. And she’s at the center of the crime scene.
Piper gets involved with retired ladies calling themselves the Dentures and Diamonds Crime Squad, and they are a force to be reckoned with. Can they solve the crime and capture the murderer. Will they find the missing dog?
The characters are fun and friendly, and toward the end of this episode, they get some interesting clues. So grab your copy and see where this will lead them.
Boy, oh boy, the carrot is just out of reach! This is the third book (they are all very short) in which I've been following the exploits of rookie detective Piper Sandstone. She is fun and snarky and constantly finds herself on the sticky end of the stick. However the suspense is killing me, and I need to find out if my own suspicions are on target. Can we find out who stole the championship poodle and why; will Piper be returning to Chicago (personally I prefer Savory, Ala.); and is there a future relationship with "Chipmunk"? I'm turning blue from holding my breath!! PS: the recipes sound awesome.
This was another entertaining installment in the series. Piper's can't help trying to figure out the latest murder and getting into trouble over it. I do wish these didn't feel like a weekly soap opera to be continued next week. I'd much prefer to have a series with full length books instead of a series of installments. These definitely need to be read in order to keep up with the story line. All in all, though, I am enjoying the story. It's well written and and the characters are endearing and entertaining.
I received an ARC of this installment in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
This is the second installment of the Savory Mystery Series. Piper has arrived in Savory Alabama under the witness protection program. Her identity and life have undergone a complete change from what her life used to be. Very colorful characters and quite a few laughs. This installment gets a little deeper into the mystery and we really get to know the Dentures and Diamonds Crime Squad. They are a hoot! Though I’m not a fan of serial books, I’m looking forward to reading the next installment. Be sure to read the prequel for some very useful background. These books definitely need to be read in order.
The mystery continues to grow in this instalment. And we have a death. There are some new characters and possible motives introduced for the murder and the dognapping.
I didn't enjoy this instalment as much as the previous. It seemed a bit disconnected. The chapters didn't flow together as seemlessly as I would like to see. And the new characters and motives were unmemorable even just minutes after finishing. I'm still invested in the story arc, however, and I still enjoy the main character, Piper, a lot.
I received a copy of this book for free via the author's ARC street team, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Red Beans And R.I.P. is the second installment of novellas featuring Detective Piper Sandstone hiding out in Alabama as her alter ego, waitress Sharon Sanders. Piper gets a voicemail from Chief Hobbs summoning her back to Chicago. Or so she thinks. Only after travelling back & meeting secretly with the chief, who also happens to be her uncle, does Piper learn things may take longer than originally thought before she can return to her life & routine in the big city. This portion of the story is a bit slower paced, but has a shock ending to set up the next part.
I love reading Karen Mc Spade's book series, The Savory Mystery series. They are so fun and entertaining in having the storyline set in the south. This book is number 2 in the series besides the prequel of Hash Browns and Homicide. The protagonist, Piper Sandstone, is still under witness protection hiding out from the mob in Chicago from a police case she was involved in. Now she is involved in another case in Savory, Alabama, in a missing kidnapping of a Westminster dog that seems to have evolved later into a homicide. I look forward to reading the next book in the series to find out what happens.
This installment felt more like a teaser than the previous one; I did still enjoy it and am looking forward with bated breath for the next chapter. It's a good thing McSpade has these coming out rapidly, as it would be obnoxiously difficult to wait for them to come out every six months or so. The mystery deepens in this segment; we overhear more suspicious information; it's a matter of putting the clues together and we don't quite have them all yet. But they're coming...
Another great installment of the Piper Sandstone mystery. Such a fun story with an intriguing plot. Quick read to enjoy during your relaxing bath or lunch time (heck anytime really!) I am looking forward to reading more installments to see the story unfold.
Please note - this is not a book to read on its own. You really need to read the first book in the series (and the prequel) before reading this one.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Detective Piper Sandstone is still in Savory, Ala., kinda in witness protection from crooked cops. She wants to go back to her job, but deep down she feels like she has found the home she never had. Four women calling themselves the Dentures and Diamond Crime Squad have taken her under their wing. They are trying to solve the mystery of the missing show dog, Victory. The squad also tries to match make Piper and the good looking sheriff. Savory is a quaint seaside town I would love to live in. The people are outgoingly friendly. Follow Piper and the squad to see if they solve the mystery.
This book pulls you in and keeps you coming back for more with the exploits of Piper or should I say Sharon but she is holding her own especially with the Dentures and Diamond crew which is a group of older women who used to be a pop group and no matter how many times she is going to leave finding Victory the prize poodle the girls keep giving her more information to make her want to solve the crime. This book is a short one but a good one and I can't wait to read the next one and I recommend this book to everyone.
In Red Beans and R.I.P., Piper Sandstone's adventures continue! Unsavory characters have come to Savory, Alabama, where Piper (a.k.a., Sharon) is set up in the witness protection program. Mister, the dog that came with Piper's new home, is a sweet delight, as are the older women who make up the Dentures and Diamonds Crime Squad. The entire novel plays out in an episode-like format, with each short episode ending with a cliffhanger (much like on TV). I can't wait to read the next episode to find out what happens next!
Red Beans and R.I. P. is the 2nd book in the Piper Sandstone Mysteies by Karen McSpade in which Piper Sandstone a Chicago Detective is in hiding in Savory, Alabama as a waitress, anmed Sharon, at local cafe'. Piper can't stay away from a good mystery with a dog napping and murder. The Denture and Dianmond Crime Squard along with Sharon (aka Piper) are hot on the trail looking for a murderer and the prize winning poodle. Suck a great short book with lots of gret charactes! Thanks Karen McSpade for a great book!
Piper thought she was going back to Chicago, not so fast girlfriend! The trial has been postponed...for a while, so she is back in Savory. There she and the Dentures and Diamonds Ladies are looing into the missing show dog and the trainer. They over hear something but are not sure what. Then Sharon makes a BIG mistake! What did she do? It's in the book to find out. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
The continuing saga of an undercover cop, Sharon, sent to a safe house & work after she arrested corrupt cops. Trouble is, she cannot keep her nose out of things! The local sheriff has taken her on a date when he gets a call. A body has been found & obviously a murder. Sharon decides she’d be safe looking at/in the deceased home, but, alas is discovered by the sheriff, who arrests her. It is obviously to do with the missing dog. So, we await developments.
The plot thickens. I really dont like cliffhangers however I really like this series it basically picks up when the last one left off. I'm enjoying it as it's a fun easy read but it's still a good sold Cozy. I love how all the chapters have a name that's just an added bonus that people like me love and thinks it makes the book just alittle bit better cause you know the Author put that little extra effort in the book. I received this as an ARC and voluntarily choose to reveiw.
Part two definitely keeps you on your toes. It's a quick read. Kind of like a long book on fast forward so you get all the best parts and not all the filler. "Sharon" finds herself in a sticky situation. So many questions of what will happen next. I actually like how at the end it does ask questions as to what you may see next. Definitely gives you a tease and you just have to find out what's next. Can't wait to read more!
Another cliffhanger public service announcement, lol. I've actually come to expect it in this series, since it's more like a serial. At least we got to find out what the heck landed Piper/Sharon in jail (as stated in the prologue for book 1). She didn't seem to be getting too much closer to solving anything, but I'm assuming in the next few books we'll find out more. I'm borrowing the next in KU just as soon as it's available!
Detective Piper Sandstone is living in a small southern town, working as a waitress, and staying out of trouble. Or is she? Waitress Sharon, her alter ego, is curious about a missing dog and the girl who was taking care of him. With the help of three older ladies who make up the Diamonds and Dentures Crime Squad, Sharon wants to solve the case. Then her unorthodox methods lands her on the sheriff’s naughty list. What else can go wrong? Keep reading. The next installment comes soon.
This is the second book in the Piper Sandstone Savory Mystery Series. In this book you find out that Piper and the Chief in Chicago are actually related. She is his niece! I don’t know if it becomes relevant later in the series but it did shock me when I read it.
This book is much more interesting than the prequel and book 1. Stuff actually starts happening in this book. An actual murder and arrest!
This was another good story it had me guessing for quite a while it is easy to follow and although a bit short I enjoyed it a great deal. I had an ARC copy from Karen and didnt have to wait too long after first book to read this second one and they have both been very enjoyable to read and see how the main character evolves and grows into the story.
