My favorite Freya Barker book! Of course, I say that about EVERY new Freya Barker book. She never disappoints me...sigh. Mature characters attract me and they abound in her books. Surrounded by heat, humor, action, drama, and suspense, the stories snare my attention and hold me captive until I reach the end. And I wouldn't mind being trapped with Paco (Nathan Phillips).
Like Mel (Melanie Morgan), I might question his interest. Older, gray, and possessing a far-from-twenty firm physique doesn't draw the average male, but Paco admires the whole package. And when it comes with trouble and danger, he (and his brother MCs) step up.
A family lawyer, the most heated Mel's days get involve words across the table wrestling divorce cases. An office break-in ends with her files scattered over her and her assistant's (daughter Lindsey) floors and leaves them puzzling as to the culprit. A dead body soon discovered appears connected to the case as well as a traumatized six-year-old boy found by Paco's MC, Arrow's Edge.
Arrow's Edge runs legitimate businesses as well as operates an unlikely fostering/temporary guardianship program for at-risk boys. More at risk than most, someone wants this boy dead because he may have witnessed his mother's murder. Since she was one of Mel's former clients, everyone works together to keep Mel, Lindsey, and the boy safe while tracking down the killer.
An exceptionally talented author, Freya Barker writes novels with great characters, dialogue, settings, and plots. With no editing issues, confusing POVs, or cliffhanging endings, her books relentlessly capture me until I reach the end. I then suffer while waiting for the new novel, a pain I'll gladly endure again and again.
