He thought his life was complete. As owner of a successful Texas horse ranch, and soon to be married, Jordan Crenshaw had everything in order. So when gorgeous city gal Janeen White stayed on his ranch for a few days, Jordan was positive that any attraction he might have felt for her was pointless. Until he suddenly found himself single once more.
Annette Broadrick was born on November 26. Her mother read to her until she read to herself. From that time on, books became her closest companions and teachers. She was an only child until the middle of her 16th year when her sister was born.
She married immediately after high school graduation in the middle of her 18th year. Twelve months later she had her first son. She ended up having four sons in seven years. People with children do not need to explain what their life was like for the next 20 years. Those people without children do not want to hear about it. Early on, she became a secretary to supplement the family income. Eventually she became a legal secretary and for 25 years she worked for attorneys in Arizona, Texas, Illinois, and Oregon.
Her love of books followed her throughout her career as a mother and a secretary. By the time her youngest son graduated from high school she decided to write a book of her own. After writing in a spiral notebook for six months, she rented a typewriter and rewrote the book, showed it to a creative writing teacher, who was also a friend, listened to her critique and rewrote her story. Next she showed it to another avid romance reader and carefully listened to her critique. She rewrote her story once again. Next she mailed the manuscript to the Silhouette office in New York. Two months later she received a phone call asking if she'd be willing to do extensive revisions, including cutting one hundred pages. She said yes. This was in January 1984. By the time the book, Circumstantial Evidence, came out in November of that year, she had sold a total of six books.
Since October 1984 Annette has supported herself with her writing. Her career as a published author has also supported her reading habit and in the past five years she has managed to establish a quiet life in the Hill Country of central Texas that soothes as well as stimulates her. She hopes to continue writing the kind of books that readers enjoy.
Rancher hero falls in love with a city girl but he is engaged plus a long distance relationship can not work. Entertaining story and the epilogue with these 2 having twins was super adorable!
Silhouette Desire books always leave me feeling weird. They're never "the best thing ever", but they consistently deliver stories that make me grin and believe in happily ever afters. I try not to be so corny, but alas I cannot help myself.
Jordan, our rancher hero, is... brusque. For half the story, you're like "This guy is a dud." But then you realize it's because he is really uncomfortable with lusting after Janeen while engaged to Cindy and his attitude is not really him, but his struggle. The second half, you're like "Oooh, he's still shy, but totally dreamy!" I really liked him for the second half of the book and after you find out why he was so weird before, you end up liking him in the first half of the book retroactively. I know that makes no sense, but I rarely make sense, so you'll just have to deal with it.
Janeen was a bit of a cardboard cutout. There wasn't anything especially unique or spectacular about her. She was just a good girl. A bit of a Mary Sue, but without being annoying. A little slow on the uptake when it came to figuring out how she felt about Jordan, but I could understand it.
The sex scenes are pretty glossed over with a few lines about "coming together in a shower of sparks and emotion" kinda shit. Pretty tame. And I'm quite curious as to what ever happened to Cindy, but maybe she gets her own story down the line.
Anyway, no real complaints, but nothing special. I'd recommend it if you like Silhouette Desire romances, but not if you prefer rancher romances. Not a lot of ranching happening here.
I really didn't like Jordan at first. He was a big jerk & I actually don't know how Janeen put up with him for so long. The change in feelings on both of their parts was a little too sudden. Towards the end I relented & admitted that Jordan wasn't all bad but I'm still not sure why Janeen suddenly fell in love with him when there were no real signs at the beginning that she had feelings for him. I also was a little annoyed by all the "J" names, Janeen, Jordan, Jake, Jack, Jared. I got confused a couple of times.
