Как се справя един всепризнат европейски майстор на илюстрацията с истории от Далечния изток? Един вълшебник, който не се нуждае от представяне, отново ,ни е нарисувал пъстри сцени и герои, но този път рисунките му ни пренасят чак в Китай! „Китайски приказки“ (изд. „Миранда“) е най-новото издание, обогатяващо колекцията от книги на италианския художник Либико Марайа. Многобройните почитатели на художника у нас ще се радват да добавят изданието към домашните си библиотеки, тъй като макар и да се придържа към оригиналния вид на първото италианско издание, „Китайски приказки“ излиза за първи път на български език. I bought this from a used book sale. It was pretty beat up but I collect fairy tale books so I grabbed it. It was published in 1958 which can explain some of the more racist portrayals in the book, though overall it could have been worse.
The collection includes 5 stories, "Huang and the Thunder Spirit", "The Strange Adventures of Liu", "The Turtle Prince", "The Home of the Dragon King" and "Young Mr. Hu".
Most of these stories are pretty similar: young good-hearted man somehow meets a magic spirit/creature/geni/king and with their help gets rich and then uses those riches to get married to the most beautiful girl in China. The magic spirt/creature/geni/king has to leave and the man is sad but he is married now and he and his wife live happily ever after. There are some variations with the magic person being sometimes evil or with the removal of the girl or some sort.
I'm a little suspicious that Shirley Goulden made up these fairy tales herself since I've googled the names of the stories and couldn't find anything other than this book. There are also no references at the back of the book and no mention of her sources for these stories.
Not a great place to start if you are interested in non-European fairy tales.

“Китайски приказки” е сборник на издателство “Миранда”, излизащ с прекрасните илюстрации на художника Либико Марайа. Той излезе за Алеята на книгата тази седмица и аз реших да си го купя поради големия ми интерес към китайската култура. Докато взимах книгата, издателят Марин Канушев ми сподели:
“Нямаш представа колко е различно и колко е красиво!”

The illustrations in this are so gorgeous. The colors and super duper rich and it's all just so lush and wonderful.
I read somewhere that this book was problematic in terms of it being "Chinese" fairy tales -- apparently the tales are not faithful or otherwise do not really represent Chinese fairy tales. As they are, the stories don't strike me as great, well, stories. More than once, I thought a story had reached a good end point, and then there was a whole other plot still waiting. It also has extremely problematic representations of female characters. Not wholesome tales at all.
