I can’t count the number of times I’ve been tempted to hand Dr. Logan Williams his scalpel pointy-end first.
But I’ve maintained my professionalism since I started working under the arrogant—and extremely handsome—heart surgeon. So maybe thinking of working “under him” in any capacity isn’t a thought I should explore. Besides, he only sees me as his surgical technologist. Izel Estrada.
When the contempt dripping from his wicked tongue grows, it only brings him closer to the scalpel—at least in my horror novel.
How can a heart surgeon be so heartless?
Or is he simply trying to mask his own attraction?

Izel is such a fun character and through the whole story she had me wondering if somehow she was a lost relative of mine!!! 🤣🤣
Anyways, the story is only told through Izel’s POV and I’m thinking maybe it was better this way because I didn’t had to dislike Dr. Logan…. well not that much!!!
Izel is fantastic! She is a force and I love her. Logan is a bit clueless and it was a little ridiculous that he didn’t put anything together sooner, but it created amazing banter. This novella is a great introduction to the Heartland Metro series.
[Excerpt from Chapter 2] Dr. Williams doesn’t say much on the drive to Heartland Metro Hospital. Other than a few grunts and winces, silence fills the car. It’s not awkward, though. In the four months I’ve worked with him, he’s hardly said a full sentence to me, unless it was about a surgical case. The only words he’s really spoken to me have been in asking for the various instruments he requires for the heart surgeries we’ve worked on together. Until today when he asked me to help him up. I don’t play music during our ride because he has terrible taste in music. Like most surgeons, he plays music in the operating room, but he always shuts it off when he gets to the crux of the operation and doesn’t resume it until he is back on safe ground. Even with that limited musical selection, I’ve come to realize Dr. Logan Williams has the worst taste in music of anyone in the entire hospital. “So, how’d you end up down the creek bank?” He doesn’t turn in my direction, and I keep my eyes on the road. “I’d rather not talk about it,” he says dryly. I press my lips together. If he weren’t hurt—and technically my boss—I’d find this a little funny. About damn time his ego got a little bruised. “I’m going to think about it all day if you don’t tell me. I’m obsessive like that. Can I at least get a hint? I mean, I am driving you to the hospital . . .” Dr. Williams huffs next to me and looks out the window as he speaks again. “I was trying to avoid hitting something.” My nose scrunches up. The trail is pretty clear of people so early in the morning, but he’d said something. “Something?” I ask. “Shall we play twenty questions until I guess what you were avoiding?” He grunts. “I’m not in the mood.” “Then tell me—or we can go on like this forever—” “Fine. It was a bunny, okay?” he snaps. “A little rabbit hopped out onto the trail, and I swerved to avoid hitting it.” I bite back my smile while he stews. His thick arms cross over a form-fitting athletic shirt that doesn’t leave his pectoral muscles to the imagination. Somehow, I manage not to laugh at his scowl when I think of the arrogant, grumpy, hotshot surgeon flat on his ass to save a little bunny. It’s actually kind of sweet. Who would have thought? I pull up to the emergency loading bay, and a nurse approaches the car. I get out and ask him for a wheelchair after I brief him on the patient. The nurse helps Dr. Williams to the chair and thank goodness for that because I’d almost thrown out my back getting him off the ground at the trail. Before the nurse gets a chance to do so, I kneel to lower the wheelchair’s footrests, then take Dr. Williams’s injured foot and place it gingerly over one of them. While I do this, I glance up at Dr. Williams to check for any grimaces indicating pain, but his eyes are fixed on . . . something. One corner of his mouth tugs upward, and I follow his gaze all the way to my boobs. My still-drenched, wet-t-shirt contest boobs in all the glory that is daylight. It takes everything in me not to grin like an idiot at having caught him gawking at my body. I don’t call him out on it, though. Any other day, I’d say hey buddy, eyes up here, but today he’s in pain, and endorphins can help with that. So instead, I linger two seconds too long until he peels his eyes from my chest and shakes his head. “You don’t have to come in with me,” Dr. Williams says, his eyes fixed to the ground in front of him as I stand to follow when the nurse wheels him in. “I don’t mind. I want to make sure you’re settled and okay.” His brows furrow together, but he stays quiet. “Dr. Williams, what happened?” The ER doctor recognizes him, and he gets the royal treatment from then on, even as he refuses pain medication. I smile when he asks for a consult with Dr. Bel from the Orthopedics department, and I make a mental note to tell Mandy her husband is a sought-after ortho god. “Well, you’re all set,” I say. I’m about to tell him I’ll see him later, but since he is now a patient, I guess he won’t be going to work today, so I stop myself. “I’ll get going.” I can always arrange to get his bike to him later. Dr. Williams turns to me with confusion etched on his brows as if he’s forgotten all about me, then he remembers. “Right,” he says. “And, I’m sorry, um . . . but I don’t think I got your name.” My head cocks to the side. What? “I’m sorry, I don’t . . .” I trail off, realization hitting me like a freight train. He doesn’t recognize me. I blink once, then twice. He has no idea who I am. This entire time . . . he thought we were strangers. Sure, he’s always seen me in scrubs, with my hair in a surgical cap and a surgical mask on my face, my body swallowed in oversized scrubs, but we’ve been working together for four months. Four months. Shouldn’t he know my voice by now? My eyes? Hell, shouldn’t he know what my face looks like outside of the operating room? To be fair, Dr. Williams is classically handsome and freaking hot. Those piercing blue eyes framed by thick black brows make many a nurse swoon around him. He would be hard to forget in or out of scrubs. But while I’m not a major babe, I do all right. Sure, I’m curvy, but I’ve been told I have a great rack. And even if my face is a bit round, I’m kind of pretty. I wouldn’t be quite so forgettable after four months of daily interaction. Would I? Dr. Williams’s posture becomes rigid when I take too long to answer, my jaw slack as I think of what to say. But I don’t get the chance to correct his blunder because a nurse wheels him away to x-ray.
'Incision' is a wonderful novella! It's a funny, well-written story with a great cast of characters. I knew I'd be in for a treat when--during one particular surgery--Izel told Logan his taste in music sucked. She listed a few bands for him to check out. I was familiar with most of her band suggestions (Tool rules)! and Izel has great taste! The book would have received 5 stars from me if it had a little more to the story line, and a different ending, which was too abrupt.
This is the first time I read a book from this author and I loved it. It’s like a rom com but also kind ok like enemies to lovers. It was a fast easy read and it was super funny and cute.
I was lucky enough to find Ofelia Martinez on tik tok and have devoured all her books and was excited to get a chance to read Incision and absolutely loved it!! Izel is such a complex mfc and loved her interactions with her family and friends as well as Logan. I laughed quite a few times. If you get a chance read this and all her books!
