The backdrop of this historical novel features political power struggles between the reigning emperor of Chu Dynasty and his younger brother, Chu Jinglan who was born from late-emperor’s most beloved concubine. He also happens to be our tsundere male lead.
Under such dire circumstances where different kings are at war against each other, this ongoing internal feud among family members who grin during the daytime, only to merciless attack their kin during the nightfall is all the more dangerous.
Jinglan is on his way back to his country after six whole years, quite aware of the dangers that await him within the golden cage called the imperial palace. But what he doesn't know is that a certain spitfire has been eagerly awaiting his return at the capital to already make him her's.

• You like an FL who's not shy to make the first move on her man. She's got a one-track mind and does not take even a minute's rest until she makes Jinglan her man. YHY (abbreviation of FL's name) is no demure lady but is infact the head of the Ye family and even commands some soldiers who are like these magical spies/guards that magically appear whenever she's in need of their help. She's no pushover, ruthlessly crushing all and any who dares to conspire downfall of her, her family or even her man.
• You like an ML whose gaze can send shivers down people's spines, yet for his wife, he's a warm pillow. He's devoted to his woman to such an extent that he only has eyes for her from the beginning, all the way till the end. Jinglan even reminds me of Gu Weiyi from PYHOMS, especially when the extra chapters draw near. *\0/*
• You really hope to finally read a C-novel where FL's family actually likes her and supports her [If you're new to C-novels, yes it's shocking that this is even a point but it's a rarity to come across a supportive family here].

Great translation, superb twists, power couple, and beautiful ending.
No matter how many Chinese-inspired stories I read that have Western publishers, nothing beats the good ol’ political intrigue of Ancient China via webnovels (which in a sense is just a Chinese wattpad story? Lmfao). I guess this is just way too niche.

Me rindo con esta novela, la protagonista es una auténtica acosadora con el ML, es obsesiva y sin orgullo propio.
El ML la rechaza y la trata mal (no lo culpo, si a mí me acosaran y tocaran así la denunciaría y todo) es agotador. Me salté capítulos para ver a la pareja "acaramelada". Pero es que no me llaman para nada el ML cambia de un momento para otro, muy forzado.

One of the best OTPs ever, definitely in my top 5.

At the top of my chinese novels.. The author did a great job with creating heartwarming and bittersweet relationships giving us such a great OTP and side couple, funny dialogues while the plot was well built and developed plus a decent villain which you don't get much in this tipe of novels!
The ML and MC are smart power couple but not op. They are not perfect and do make mistakes but they work hard to learn from them. The MC is so devoted to her beloved, it's truely heart touching. Her unconditional love touches ML too and his stone cold heart finally melts. At the beginning he is a bit cold towards her but you really can't blame him.
What can I say I'm very weak against female leads that are unapologetic about love while some readers might avoid the "protagonist falls in love first" trope because they feel that it might make a strong female lead look weak and vulnerable, but this novel shows you the opposite, the FL's love is what made her stronger and allowed her to be ambitious enough to become the matriarch of her family.

The writing was so effective that I found myself laughing at the scenes or along with the characters, getting riled up due to the misgivings and crying a bucket of tears, only to realize the waterworks were for nothing, and yet the emotions were so genuine that I didn't regret anything.

LOL it's not 12/28 so uh :X trying to write my "actual review" 14 days & many reads later ... I'm wavering between a 3 and 4 - wish I could do 3.5 but it'd be a GOOD 3.5 so I went with four cuz I can definitely still remember stuff from this novel/how I felt esp reviewing my chapter notes. LOL what's funny is when a book is SO good I actually stop writing stuff (like the end for this one?) and also I was cracking up at all the errors from DYAC cuz all my commentary is done on my phone as I read.
I ... think I'd re-read this book but there are a number of others I'd re-read first. Mainly the QSCK books (OMG I'M WAAAAAIIIITTTINNNNGGGG on full translations *SOBS*) and SFF books (also with the translations often being incomplete *cries*
So ... this one was not bad - not great; obvs I mentioned the "wang" always being translated as "king" even though obviously ML for much of the book was a prince. It's hard cuz translations that are bad definitely affect the quality of reading. (Sorry I can't handle the source material!)
ANYWAY. FL was too good to the ML here IMO. In the end, yes I guess he did deserve her he lived in absolute misery and didn't care about his life or death - or life plan - in order to try to find her (corpse) so ... 😒 I still think he deserved to suffer those three months and maybe it was too short. But *sigh* I guess the FL would've been sad if he'd suffered more. But seriously she's the one who had OMFG love brain here. (LOL clearly I prefer a smitten hero to a smitten heroine.) And he did BECOME smitten but >.> I prefer him falling first.
Once he sorted his shit out and fell/began to trust her, I loved how they worked in concert. I actually :X don't remember so much of the end - so >.> I guess not that epic? The cliff thing and his battle and the vengeance ML and her brother did on her behalf, thinking she was dead really did bring them together, so that was good.
Ahahaha I just really carry a grudge. [And <.< can't ... remember the ending other than obviously knowing it's a HEA and he wins.)
OHHHHHH. Re-reading now. LOL that "concubine selection" was EPIC. ...EPIC!!!! (LOL and ... was this the ~one book where our couple has sex even when FL is pregnant? A rarity esp in c-novels? YES!) Awww+Ohhhh I'd forgotten he busts (literally) into the birthing room to accompany her. 🥰 and him telling her he wants all her lifetimes/for them to be married. (And for her to not give birth again because he can't bear seeing her go through the pain - plus her bedrest because of her childhood waist injury.)
And ugh to the asshole people who thought because he did her ceremonies lowkey (BECAUSE SHE WAS RECOVERING - both to become empress and for the child's one month thing) - she wasn't favored. HMPH.
LOL so it had a really sweet ending, once ML falls he's ALL in and I'm still slightly mad abut he does truly love her. Heh and this novel was one of the more explicit ones - def doing to read more by the author/ have the "sequel" waiting in the wings. 😅 I didn't remember a lot of the sweet scenes I remembered were from this book.

I've read my fair share of Chinese historical romance novels, so I had a hard time getting into the setting as it seemed very unrealistic for the FL to be head of the family at age 18 even though she has multiple uncles and brothers. Plus there's no way a woman from any period of Chinese history would be able to get away with even half of what she does. So like I said, the setting is quite unrealistic. It gets better once she and the ML are married and she stops acting with so much impropriety and the story instead focuses more on the politics and advancing their goals.
In addition to what I mentioned above, another thing that took away from my enjoyment of the story was the translation quality. The entire story was translated with very awkward phrasings and lots of grammatical mistakes. I almost dropped it after the first couple chapters because I found reading it quite painful, but eventually I got used to it and soldiered on.
In terms of the story, I found the story here quite refreshing as main characters are clearly planning for sedition right from the beginning. It's not a case of the FL falling for the crown prince or anyone else who will eventually be emperor under the rightful process, so it was interesting to read about their plans to weaken the families supporting the emperor before moving onto the emperor himself. I enjoyed the story much more after the ML finally starts trusting the MC and they can focus on their goal.
To be honest, I didn't like the FL, Ye Huaiyang, at all. Initially she comes off as overly obsessed with the ML, Chu Jinglan, both with the person himself as well as his physical appearance. It gets to the point where she moves into the house next to his by herself and runs over the walls separating their two residences to shamelessly flirt with and kiss him, even though he's clearly not interested in her. Who does that? Even if the ML saved her when she was young, that doesn't mean she should be so obsessed with him. He saved plenty of other children at the same time, not just her, so he was just being kind in general and wasn't treating her specially.
I also don't understand why YHY wants to rush off into danger with him when she doesn't have any fighting skills whatsoever. She'll just drag him down when they get ambushed since he has to dedicate some resources to protecting her. She should just stick to helping him plan and execute those plans without putting herself in danger, which is where her strengths lie anyways.
There are two side couples that I didn't really care about. Once the main story was over, the author spent some more chapters wrapping up their storylines which I found boring.
Most of the villain characters get their just desserts, but I felt like Meng Chen deserved more. She must be one of the dumbest side characters I've ever read about, if she thinks she can screw over her loved one's life goal and still marry him in the end. Because of her, the ML's carefully set plans all came to naught and he had to rush and almost lost his wife and child in the meanwhile.
Last but not least, I'd be remiss in my review if I didn't mention Lanlan the panda! Along the lines of suspending my belief that I mentioned earlier, this was another area where I had to do that since I don't think pandas are domesticated enough to raise as a pet. But still, YHY is living out my panda raising dream!! :D

I enjoyed the characters and the political plot. I loved the side couples! They were my favourite. I did love the main couple, they were good to each other.
The reason it isn’t a 5 star for me is mainly because the two MC really frustrated me sometimes with their lack of communication. They were constantly scheming which is cool but then wouldn’t be honest with the other and then would get hurt, scaring the other. It was mainly my girl who would do it but man it drove me up the wall. Because there was nothing need for her to be putting herself in danger 75% of the time. I understand she loved him deeply and so that made her a little stupid sometimes, it’s just that it made her too stupid. I didn’t like the forced marriage plot either. I did not love how he treated his kid but this seems to be common with these kind of books unfortunately.

This was not as light hearted as the title implies. There's a lot of politics and intrigue in the beginning when all the players are being introduced and while our main pair get to know each othe. The romance comes starts sliding in about a quarter in and then landslides through about halfway.
The main character's love is quite sweet in how pure and selfless it is. She is in love with the male lead from the get go and her steadfastness slowly but surely chips away at his defenses.
The politics isn't particularly clever but it is reasonably logical and still very engaging to the end.

I randomly picked it up and def worth it.I had so much fun reading this one. Romance was so much intersting when yu took all the initiatives and it was so much intersting reading their initial interactions.Wanted more of side character stories.
