Returned to Temari Hall after her abduction, Lira’s ultimate ambition remains unchanged. Destroy Underground and leverage that victory to rise up the ranks of the Mage Council. Make them all forget about the Darkmage and remember her instead.
To do that, she must win back the trust of Underground while secretly spying on them for the Mage Council. Exposure would mean her death at the hands of the powerful Shadowcouncil.
But the arrival of Ahrin Vensis at Temari Hall places Lira in greater danger than ever before. The Darkhand’s agenda is unknown, and she hides secrets that could undo everything Lira is working towards. Winning the Darkhand to her side would guarantee victory, but to do that Lira will need to betray those who offer a gift she’s never had but always yearned for… acceptance and friendship.
Can she successfully walk the line between ambition and loyalty, or will Lira’s hunger for danger leave her standing amidst the ashes of all her hopes?

I love that when life changes and things get busy there are series like this that I can look forward too and devour until my eyes give out. Cassidy has a marvelous way of fleshing out her characters and providing a gradual increase in their growth as the plot progresses. I can’t even decide who I enjoy most with the character building and effortless writing style. I am toggling sides wen it comes to Lira. I’ve never been this excitedly wishy-washy on a character before and I am liking it.
I felt this novel was more character focused than action focused and readers were given the ability to settle and connect with them more after the ride of book one. With that said, I do prefer a faster plot pace and even though this had it’s less actionable, moments I was pretty thrilled when the last part of the novel ramped up. I like the setup of intrigue, twists and the cliffhanger that leaves you waiting for more! Ok, let’s be honest, impatient for more.
The worldbuilding, monsters and magic are just as captivating as book one. Add a wonderful writing style that grips your attention and here you go. If you love fantasy, I recommend getting your hands on Heir to the Darkmage and follow the path into Mark of the Huntress. Your fantasy heart will love you for it.
Thank you Lisa Cassidy for the opportunity to read and review your novel for an honest and unbiased review!
I was lucky enough to be given an ARC and couldn’t put it down. After a more leisurely second read I am still eagerly awaiting the third instalment to see what happens.
Mark of the Huntress continues Lisa Cassidy’s second series set in the world of The Mage Chronicles. Lira continues to be an interesting, nuanced character as she tries to find her own way in this world. It’s also good to be able to see some of the original characters again. With lots of action, adventure, and high stakes, this series is highly recommended. I just wish book three was already out though so I can find what happens next!
I have been eagerly waiting to read this as book #1 ended with a cliffhanger and I was not disappointed. Book #2 in the series progressed the story and I got to learn more about Lira. The story continued to surprise me and I enjoyed reading about the conflicting priorities Lira had and the consequences from her choices.
Argh this book also ended with a cliff hanger so I am eagerly waiting for the next book in the series.
I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of book 2. I thought the first book was a bit slow to start with but come home like a steam train. But book 2 is a ride and a half start to finish, a 5 star book in my mind. It has what I like in a book, strong story, light moments mixed in with the dark bits and endings wanting you to see the first chapter of the next book.
(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)
What I liked about this book: the character development; the secrets/mystery; the gorgeous writing; the suspense. Lisa Cassidy consistently excels at these in all of her books, and this one is no exception. I could not put this down as I tried to figure out everyone’s secrets along with the characters. This would’ve easily been a 5 star book for me except for two things…..
What I didn’t like about this book: First, the MC’s romantic relationship held no passion or fire for me, I simply could not connect to their romance. I think it’s because Lira has pointed out so many times that she cannot trust her love interest that I’ve been taught not to trust her either. Which is so disappointing because I have been WAITING SO LONG for an amazing sapphic romance fantasy novel and I so badly wanted this to be that novel… but I just couldn’t connect to their love affair. Second, I’ve read the first series based in this world, loved it, amazing characters. And all of those characters are in this novel now too, 20 years older. I had an extremely difficult time watching those beloved characters become abhorrently unlikable to the MC in this series. It makes me sad, depressed, uncomfortable, conflicted, all the things. And usually there is at least a hint of redemption for characters in Cassidy’s novels, but I caught nothing of that here, not even at the very end. It’s a much darker ending & story than any of this author’s other books and I’m finding myself a little off-kilter because of it. I’m still hopeful that the next book will resolve some of this tension!!

As usual with Lisa’s books, I devoured this one in two days. The characters are distinctive and thoroughly human - deep and obvious flaws along with likeable qualities which contributes to a sense of realism throughout the novel, despite the fantastical setting. Lira is a great lead and I’m really enjoying reading a series where the protagonist is almost an ‘anti-hero’ (very rare when they are a teenage girl!). This book leads nicely on from the last one, and is full of unexpected twists and turns while adding to what we already know about the workings of Underground and the wider society of the mages. The further development of the romance hinted at in book 1 was beautifully done. The cliffhanger ending, however, left me feeling a bit underwhelmed and frustrated. There is a lot more going on, I think, than what has been revealed so far. Unfortunately because the reader isn’t privy to most of it (although it’s been hinted at) the final major event doesn’t seem to quite make sense. Some of the main characters act in ways that don’t ring true to what their personalities and actions have been up until this point, and I found that more irritating than suspense-inducing. Hopefully the next book will provide a good explanation (if it does, I’ll make sure to come back and note that here!). Overall however it was a good second novel and I certainly can’t wait for the next one!
I need the next book RIGHT NOW. That ending has me so angry and sad and rage-filled and hurt and I need some sort of resolution that involves vengeance and whole lot of apologies. I wouldn’t say no to some sort of epic smack down from Lira, either.
Ok, so aside from my absolute need for Lira to throw all this back in everyone’s faces, let’s talk about the rest of the most excellent novel. The first thing: character growth. Ah-mazing. Lira has no qualms about who she is and what she’ll do but there’s now much more to her because she’s starting to let others in.
Her friends are wonderful and I have to smile every time they just cheerfully accept Lira’s particular quirks and her bafflement over it haha. I hope they realize what’s going on and their faith in her doesn’t waver.
The details of the conspiracy we learned were so not enough and I need all of the answers right now! I’m so impatient. It’s killing me with curiosity! I can’t even see the shape of this and I’m not sure whether that’s me being dense, good writing on Lisa’s part, or too much randomly happening for it to be a good thing. I am looking forward to seeing how this weaves together.
I like what’s happened with Ahrin and Lira. I won’t say more because spoilers but I’m so on board with this.
A great installment and I will of course be getting book 3!
Lira and her fellow apprentices have recovered (mostly) from their kidnapping and they’re back at Temari Hall. So is Ahrin. This book twists and turns its way through Lira trying to find her way through new friendships, deciding if she can trust old friends and balancing her commitments to the Underground and the Mage Council. The more she learns, the more confused she is. Although this book was not quite as fast- paced as the first one, I appreciated getting to spend more time with Lira and seeing her change and there were more than enough “ahas” and surprises or twists to keep me guessing! The main problem with this book is that I now have to wait for the next one to find out what happens!!
The second book in the follow-up series to the Mage Chronicles saga, this book continues with excellent character development. Ahrin and Lira continue to be two excellent main characters! I find myself equal parts supportive of and frustrated by Lira and her choices - the mark of a truly grey character, I think.
I liked the pacing in the second half of the novel more (a bit faster, which is my preference), and the ending is a proper cliffhanger - good thing these novels aren't published years apart like some authors are wont to do, or else I would be infuriated! Can't wait for the next in the series.
I really enjoyed the second in Lisa's 'Heir to the Darkmage' series and, as usual, was left wishing the next in the series was immediately available. The pace of the story built as it progressed with unexpected twists and turns. I found the start a little slow as Lira's character and motivations were fleshed out - probably because she's an unusual heroine and quite difficult to empathise with at times. But, she's certainly no shrinking violet and a great female role model in that regard. I find the multi-dimensional characters and their relationships the most entertaining aspect of Lisa's writing and Mark of the Huntress doesn't disappoint.
The first book in this series left me with so many questions, so I was really eager to get my hands on book 2. Mark of the Huntress took me on another exciting journey with lots of adventure, suspense and action. I also really enjoyed the excellent character development and changing relationships between Lira and her cohort. Lisa Cassidy always writes rich and complex characters. This book did answer some of my questions from book 1, but left me with even more questions, especially after the heartbreaking ending! I need book 3... quickly!
Take it as a good sign that I read this book in under two days cause I just had to know what was next - so many layers of intrigue in this book. Like Book 1 in this series, this is a bit different to the author's other series, but equally as readable with strong characters and packing in a lot of story. If I'm honest, I'd have liked more fighting cause this author writes amazing fight scenes, but I'm hooked and waiting for Book 3. Full disclosure - received an advanced reader copy.
Another cracker of a book from Lisa Cassidy. I received an ARC of this book and it did not disappoint. Building upon the foundations from the first book - complex characters, intrigue, and cool monsters - this one ramps up the stakes for Lyra and her allies. I particularly enjoyed the character development. And goes without saying - cannot wait for the next one!
Picking up pace from the first instalment of the series, we continue the gang's adventures in a world that gets darker, more treacherous and less and less obvious. It's hard to tell friend from foe but alliances need to form nonetheless. Lisa's writing gets better with every book and I look forward to the next two chapters of this saga.
The darkness of this story was hard to read. You took a child and made her a victim because of things she had no control over. You broke her over and over again. After the first series I thought this one would be even better. It is disturbing. I wish I had not read it.
I found it very hard to like the protagonist at first but soon realised why she behaved the way she did. A common theme through this series - where you can't quite figure if the protagonist is a hero or anti-hero. But I'm glad I persisted to the end. I was almost annoyed that this book ended on yet another cliffhanger but was equally glad that it meant another book to devour.
Well, that was a kick in the teeth cliffhanger. Just when I was finding Lira somewhat bearable and possibly redeemable, she turns around and undoes it. Not that she wasn't provoked...I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. As usual Lisa's world and characters expand with every book.
Another terrific read! The characters are cleverly developed so we’re not really sure of who to ‘trust’ and descriptions of the settings had me feeling like I was there. I can’t wait to read the next book!
Another fantastic book by Lisa Cassidy. Her characters have so much life and their motivations are so intricate. I never know where the story is going to take me and I love it! Can’t wait for the next!
I wanted to close the book before I’d even read half of it. I was tired of Lira’s whining. If you like anti-heroes, you might find this book worth reading. I don’t. And the ending makes it clear that all Lira’s attempts to be “good” have ended, too.
Lira, being betrayed time and again is just heartbreaking. This reminds me that you are born a psychopath (nature), but society makes you a killer (nurture).
These people are making her a Darkmage. She wasn’t born one!!! Although I have faith she will come through this. 🤞
Also Tarrick, WHAT???
“Something cracked inside Lira, and she let out a gasping breath, her head hanging. “I tried. Despite all of it, I tried to help you. I did what you asked. I risked my life working with Underground. I wanted to be one of you… I trusted you to do the right thing when trusting was the hardest thing I’ve ever done after the life I’ve had.” Hot, silent tears slid down her face. “And you do this to me.”
Now to read the next book…

Another book I could hardly put down. Or stop reading at all. Lira the main character is so complex and battling with herself the whole time - the complexities and drive for her to fight for good mean she eventually snaps when she gets outplayed. I particularly enjoyed the love interest part to Lira’s saga which made her and Ahrin even more interesting characters. Another wonderful book and I can’t wait to read more. Keep writing!!!
