A business how-to that takes a different approach to a common problem. These authors painstakingly make out a strong case that culture is at the core of every company's success or failure.

This book starts with a solid introduction and ends with a firm conclusion. This is a very scholarly approach that is rarely seen in today's writings.

Each chapter is well laid out to allow the reader to get the most out of the information. They start each with a section titled 'What You Learn in This Chapter'. Each chapter ends with a handy 'Key Takeaways' section. With this approach, a business can key on a specific chapter as the need exists.

If there is any issue here, it is that this is a touch wordy in its approach. This could make it difficult for every business owner to get the most out of this work.

The authors also include handy downloadable pages to allow a reader to work as they read. This will allow a keen student of this book to get the most they can out of the work.

A very valid addition to the business how to section. The real-life examples of successes and failures help make this book more approachable. Personally, I saw many of the mistakes I witnessed in my office career highlighted here. An important book for business owners to read, or task someone to read for them.

Disclaimer: I received a copy from the authors in the hopes I'd review it.

Super enjoyable and helpful read from the team at Historic Agency on the importance of prioritizing your internal culture over external communication toward organizational growth. Especially appreciate the shout outs to the world’s greatest restaurant Taco Bell throughout.

Our team is reading this for work, and in amongst the kinds of advice and examples that are common to almost every book about leadership, the authors bring out some really great things to consider. I work in a place that's not at all toxic, so we're not trying to salvage a bad situation; we're just hoping to bring more intentional consistency to our culture. We've known for a long time that "[our] best marketing strategy is [our] people" (55), but our approach to internal cultural has been fragmented. I'm not sure a lot of people outside of Marketing & Communications would articulate that "[We] don't have a brand. [We] are a brand" (37), even though we all understand that intuitively. So I found lots of good takeaways in each section: Principles, Architecture, Rituals, Lore, Vocabulary, and Artifacts.

This book was recommended to me and is honestly not one I probably would have found myself reading on my own. But I’m glad I did. A lot of core principles that apply to my changing role immediately, and some real tangible takeaways that I will need to continue to look back on moving forward.

Culture always wins! Over all else!

It is time to unleash the power of your culture.

Propel your brand forward.

It is easy to get sucked into the weekly KPIs, year-end goals, big projects, daily tasks, and all else that falls into the operation of running a successful brand.

Yet, most pass up on what Mark Miller and Ted Vaughn claim to be the greatest driver of brand success.

What’s that?

It is your internal company culture.

Listen, we know…

People buy from people.
People enjoy working with likeminded people.

Yet, most businesses neglect the internal morale of their brand and focus all energy on external aspects.

The secret to winning more customers is through company culture.

The two fellas from Historic Agency go into detail as to why this is the truth!

This book covers a ton and was really interesting to dive into!

Topics like Principles, Architecture, Rituals, Lore, Vocabulary, and Artifacts are some of the major pillars of this book.

The authors go into great detail on providing the reader with a winning blueprint to turn customers into raving fans, all while growing your business.

Also, tons of similarities to sports, too. But, that is for another day.

Brand and culture are separate entities, right? Not according to Mark Miller and Ted Vaughn of Historic Agency. These two teamed up to deliver ‘Culture Built My Brand’ in which they convey the important role company culture plays in shaping your brand image and in turn, benefitting your employees and your bottom line.

This book explains the importance of clearly defined principles, appropriate company rituals, and carefully selected vocabulary can shape the core of an organization. Because how an organization functions internally will either support or clash with its outward brand.

What I enjoyed most about this book was the real life examples of former clients and how other well-known companies failed or succeeded in aligning their culture with their brand, and how it affected them in the end.

Written in a positive tone, accompanied by attention-grabbing graphics and an attractive layout, this book is a necessity for any company that is in the process of building, or re-building brand image and internal culture.

The writing had a great mix of storytelling and “how-to’s” throughout each chapter which made the reading expierence flow seamlessly. Mark and Ted spell out how important company culture is to a brand through what they call the Marquee Culture method, which consists of 6 main elements. There are so many takeaways for someone wanting to learn about business, as an owner or employee, that you will just have to grab a copy for yourself!

Culture Built My Brand equips you to understand and invest in your culture so your brand can stand out. It guides you in understanding the connection between your company's culture and how balancing trust can lead to employees who turn out to be the brand advocates you need. Mark Miller and Ted Vaughn, use real business examples to get you to ask the right questions for you to answer about your company. It is a book that will serve as a guide just as much as a workbook, and to me, that's the best kind of book to get you to make the proper changes and breathe fresh life into your brand.

I picked up this book because one of my goals this year is around improving our office culture. There is some good tangible stuff in here — I especially appreciated the concrete examples (good and bad). from various organizations.

Not a fan of 10-20 “homework” questions at the end of every chapter, though. And at the end of the day, this could have been a blog post.
