Dead Giveaway is district attorney Genevieve Alexander’s story, as she tries to both escape as well as find out the identity of the killer who’s after her with the help of her ex, Easton Ford.

Book Two of Defenders of Battle Mountain follows another serial killer as they follow an ex-resident of this small town, with the aim of getting justice!

Trigger Warning: Serial Killer, Violence, Gory, Kidnapping

Warning: This is the second book in a series and has spoilers of the first one.

Synopsis:
Genevieve got one of the worst serial killers recently sentenced to life in prison, but The Contractor turns up at her house and awards her a second chance to catch him. She needs help as she reinvestigates the case, and the only person that comes to her mind is Easton Ford, her ex who’s now Battle Mountain’s reserve officer.

Review:
First of all, how I loved the cover of this one. Easton Ford has already been introduced in Grave Danger, book one of this series, as the younger brother of Weston. He is finally ready to take charge of his own life after hiding out for a long time in his family’s property post losing his entire unit in Afghanistan; he’s ex-military.

His former fiancée, Genevieve Alexander, is in the crosshairs of a serial killer, and as the volunteer Battle Mountain PD reserve officer, he would do anything to protect her.

The book starts with a bang as we are introduced to both the killer, one of their victims, and their next target. And then starts the second chance story of Easton and Genevieve.

This was as much a fight about getting justice as it was about Genevieve proving herself that she was her own woman. I loved seeing the character stand for herself time and again. Especially since she was only nineteen at the time she left the man she thought was destined to be ever after.

I will never stop loving the fact though, how Nichole Severn makes her stories as kickass as she makes them soft.
He kissed the crown of her head.

Yep, I love such kisses.

A writing style I noticed in this book was the way the author wrote the continuation scenes. Almost gave me a heart attack, thinking about what/how it all went wrong and whether one of the two protagonists will be there to save the day next. It was all so suspenseful.
…and there’s no shame in searching for things that make us feel better. Even if no one else understands it.

How my heart hurt for both of them; Genevieve and Easton both need help with their feelings/past, and yet they do not seem to have the exact people they seek it from, even when they do have in their lives people who care about them.

Dead Giveaway has a serial killer unlike any I have read before. Not only was I able to guess till the very end their identity but also it was a new concept (for me) where the serial killer was motivated other than the usual forms of inducements (which came as a total surprise!).

There’s a three-month later epilogue for the protagonists and another epilogue that introduces the next story (Dead on Arrival).

Thank you to the author for an e-ARC of the book.

This is the second book in Nichole Severn's "The Defenders of Battle Mountain" series and boy, does she have an imaginative way of killers dealing with their prey.
Eason Ford's first instinct was to slam the door in her face, how did she have the nerve to ask for his help after tearing his life apart.
Easton had been left at the altar fifteen years ago , his life had spiraled out of control and now Genevieve Alexander was standing on his doorstep, because of her Easton had joined the army, he was the only one of his group to survive an IED, he suffered survivors guilt and PTSD, he had shut himself away on his parents ranch and only after the death of his father had he started to emerge and had taken on the job of a PD officer to help his brother. It now all came tumbling back, the cause of it all was standing in front of him and he was beyond angry.
Genevieve had run out on marriage to Easton, not because she didn't love him but because she needed to find her own identity, she had worked two jobs to put herself through college and was now district attorney for the town of Alamosa.
Genevieve's life was in danger and she didn't know who else she could count on.
A serial killer, known as the Contractor, that she had put behind bars had turned out to be a copycat and the real serial killer was now after her, the sight that confronted her when she entered her home was one that would be burned into her brain forever.
Could Easton forget the past and help Genevieve, seeing her brought all the old emotions back.
The killers methods were heinous, he was a psychopath who was always one step ahead of the police but who was he ?
This story twists and turns and is unpredictable, it is action packed and suspense filled, I look forward to the next book in the series.
I received a free copy of this book and my review is voluntary.

Terrific book that kept me hooked from start to finish. The action and suspense were intense, and the rekindling relationship was full of pitfalls from their past.

Genevieve is the DA for another town. Fifteen years earlier, she left her fiancé, Easton, at the altar, moved three hours away and started a new life. After finding a dead body in her home and discovering that the serial killer she thought she had put away was only a copycat, Genevieve knows she needs help. She returns to Battle Mountain and the only man she trusts to keep her safe - Easton.

After the disaster of his failed wedding, Easton joined the military to escape the memories and the heartbreak. He returned to Battle Mountain a year ago after losing his team left him with flashbacks and PTSD. Locking himself away in his cabin and avoiding everyone, he began reconnecting a few months ago, after his father's death and helping his brother catch a serial killer (Grave Danger). The last thing he expects is to find Genevieve on his doorstep asking for help.

Though their first encounter doesn't go well, Easton can't deny his need to protect Genevieve. As they work together to identify and stop The Contractor, it becomes evident that their feelings for each other are as strong as ever. But can they overcome the hurts and insecurities of the past to find a new life together? I ached for Easton, who is wrapped up in survivor's guilt, grief for his father, and unresolved feelings about Genevieve's desertion. He hasn't been able to open up about his pain with any of his family, so it has festered inside him. Somehow, he can share those memories and the pain with Genevieve. I liked how she acknowledged his feelings, then showed him that the events weren't his fault, setting him on the road to healing.

Genevieve still feels guilty about the way she left Easton, admitting that she took the coward's way out. Her need to know herself outside of her relationships drove her away, and she worked hard to establish that identity and likes the life she has now. But seeing Easton again stirs up the old feelings and causes her to worry about losing herself again.

I loved watching Easton and Genevieve grow closer as they worked together. But neither one appeared to have learned from their past mistakes. Though Easton realizes he still loves Genevieve, his way of showing it brings back Genevieve's fears and insecurities. I ached for Easton but wanted to shake him for slipping back into old habits. I hurt for Genevieve, too, because she loves him but is afraid to trust herself. I liked how she stood up for herself and her needs. It takes nearly losing each other permanently to be ready to put the past behind them.

The suspense of this story had me glued to the pages from start to finish. The first pages set the scene of a ticked-off serial killer because someone else has been convicted of his crimes. He takes his anger to the DA responsible in a very personal and grisly manner, making it clear that he expects her to do a better job by giving her a "second chance." Genevieve's fear is palpable, as is her dismay at the mistake and her determination to get it right. It doesn't help that the local police chief indicates that he believes she is the guilty party. When Genevieve and Easton begin working together to unmask the killer, they return to the beginning. However, no matter what they discover, the killer always seems to be one step ahead of them.

The tension ramps up as the information Easton and Genevieve unearth draw them closer to a shocking revelation. Just when they think they have solved it, an unexpected twist puts Genevieve in mortal danger. I was shocked by the revelations I didn't see coming, and I put an unusual spin on the usual serial killer scenario. Genevieve impressed me with her fortitude and determination, making the final confrontation one of the best I've ever read.

There are two epilogues. A mini one at the end of the last chapter, updating Genevieve and Easton's lives three months later, and the main epilogue is the lead-in to the next book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it. I will be purchasing a copy from the publishers website to help support this amazing author.

The author is one of my favorites. Her story-telling is one that just draws my into the world of the book. I get hooked into the action, mystery and suspense right from the beginning. It is a good thing I don’t take heart medication as I can feel my heart escalate with each turn of the page! There were some scenes that I had to wipe away a few tears (just a word of caution on that front.)

Easton Ford and Genevieve Alexander were two great protagonists. I adored Easton from his appearance in the first book. Genevieve took some warming up to. She ran out on her wedding day to Easton over a decade ago. Since then we has become a district attorney to a town 3 hours away from Battle Mountain. She returned to seek help in a case involving a serial killer.

Will Easton help her? If he does help, will his own PTSD hinder the investigation? Will they be able to figure out who the killer is before someone else is murdered? These questions and a few more meant that I was turning pages hot and heavy. The twisted plot was one that had me baffled for much of the story.

This was written in a dual POV format. Getting that glimpse into the characters’ thoughts really helped me to better understand Genevieve several times in the story.

While this is a part of a series, you don’t have to read the prior one to fully understand and enjoy this one. I would highly recommend it though as it was Easton’s brother, Weston and Battle Mountain’s medical examiner, Chloe story was just as enthralling!

There was a little sexy here but nothing that should offend anyone.

Nichole Severn
Dead Giveaway

Genevieve Alexander
District Attorney

Easton Ford
Deputy Sheriff

Nichole took me on a case in Battle Mountain , Colorado.
Genevieve is on the run from the Contractor. She had seen enough and headed toward Battle Mountain in Colorado. She wanted Easton to help her solve a case that involved her.
Easton hadn't seen her since she ran away on there wedding day. She knew she had chance he wouldn't help her one bit. But he was surprised to see her on his front door step one day. But first before he would help her she left his house and went to a motel room. But short after she got there was a package left for her. Then Easton showed up and said he would help her.
They found Genevieve assistant hanging from her ceiling. Then before that there was other things she needed to figure out about the case she was working was four other murderers that need to be figured out about her case.
Will Genevieve and Easton figure out this case?
Will they figure out there feelings and work together?
I enjoyed reading Dead Giveaway the characters had been put together and work together really well. This was a book it kept me right in the book with the characters. I would recommend this book.

High intensity drama! Nichole Severn is bringing on the twists and turns with the second book in her Defenders of Battle Mountain series and I loved every minute of it. DEAD GIVEAWAY sends the DA who is in danger straight back into the arms of the man she left at the altar years ago. The drama is spot on and the mystery is interwoven with their reconciliation just enough to keep both at the top of our mind as we walk into danger with them. I'm looking forward to more in the series!

Easton might be back home on Battle Mountain, but he's a shell of the man he used to be. Reconnecting with his first love is more healing for him than he ever imagined.

Genevieve knows the only man she trusts to keep her safe when danger comes knocking at her door is East, but she also knows she tore his world apart all those years ago. Seeing her finally come clean with her torn emotions of then and now is heartwarming.

I highly recommend this book as well as the entire series to anyone who enjoys a fast paced book of intrigue with a side of romance. The characters are easy to like and the action is non-stop.

I really loved Easton when i discovered him in the first book, his fragility but strong loyalty really made him stand out so i was delighted to learn more about him in this instalment. We learn what happened when he was in the military but also before so this was great .
Now for his counterpart Genevieve....... i don't like her, sorry while i could have understood her reasons at first the fact she kept finding excuses got on my nerves.Yes she is courageous, yes she is right for Easton but i don't like her.

The investigation was wonderfully written with enough twists to have you on edge until the last page and at time the tension is really strong even if they are moments more fun ( mamma bear^^) , other really romantic this one is really suspenful.

If you want a good romance suspense to keep you on edge with a great damaged main character this is the book for you , can work as stand alone too.

The second book in Defenders of Battle Mountain. Wow! I finished this book in one day.
When Deputy Easton Ford answers the door only to find his ex-fiancé standing there he is baffled to say the least. Attorney Genevieve Alexander has been through a lot and she needs help, and so she goes to the only man that can help her. The only thing is Easton wants nothing to do with her. She sees that. She did break his heart so she doesn’t blame him at all. When Easton sees her neck he wants to know what happened, but still he can’t change how he feels. He can’t do it.
So Genevieve is on her own. What happens next she’s stumped. They have a history, but she hopes he doesn’t have second thoughts of helping her.

Easton can’t believe he’s going to help her after what she did to him, but he can’t or won’t let anything happen to her. So he changes what he thinks.

Buy the book. Oh so much more to come. I can’t wait for more.

This author delivers another story that will keep you on the edge of your seats from the first page to the last.
We are back in Battle Mountain and this time Easton Ford, whom we met in book one, gets his story.
Easton fell in love with his HS sweetheart , Genevieve Alexander. But just before the wedding, she leaves him and the town behind. He was left devastated and heartbroken. He enlisted and now, fifteen years later, after a mission that destroyed his team, he is back home suffering from back flashes and PTSD.
Genevieve, now a DA, is in danger and needs help and protection. She returns to town to the only man she trusts, Easton. The complicated feelings are still strong but will survive the danger? Who is the killer? Why is he or she killing these women?
The story had an engaging plot with complex characters.
A story worth your time.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

This ARC was given to me in exchange for an honest review
Wow! A very gripping story.
Right from the beginning it hooked me into the drama, mystery and suspense!

Easton Ford and Genevieve Alexander were High School Sweethearts
Genevieve ran out on their wedding day over a decade ago. Genevieve has since then become a district attorney to a town 3 hours away from Battle Mountain. She came back to get Easton's help in a case involving a serial killer.

Will Easton even consider helping her? He has his own issues from being in the Army, if he helps her can he overcome his PSTD enough to make a difference? Will Easton just be a hindrance to the case. in working together to solve the murders can they figure out who the killer is before someone else gets murdered?
A very gripping twisted plot that had me befuddled for most of the story.
Absolutely recommend this awesome book by Nichole Severn

Wow so good!! I have loved these two books in the series but this one was great. So agnsty and heart breaking.
This was about Easton, the reserve deputy to his brother Weston, (from the last book) and DA Genevieve who she had history with.
Lots of intense moments are all through this book as they are on the trail of a serial killer. I loved Easton and Genevieve and even though she hurt him so badly and what he went through, he still managed to forgive her and fall in love. She was a feisty one but rightly so. Unfortunately tragedy struck. I kind of felt like she felt she had no other options after that. Sad though.
So well written with characters I adored and well situations I would never want to be in. Lol the drama, mystery and intrigue are unmissable though. Brilliant book!!
This was an ARC and this is my honest review of this fantastic book!

This is the second book of Nichole's Defenders of Battle Mountain series and it's every bit as good as the first, if not better! I love Chloe and Weston. This book is about Weston's brother Easton and Genevieve (the woman who stood Easton up at the alter 15 years earlier). Genevieve is drawn into a "game" being played by a serial killer she thought she put behind bars. She turns to the one man she knows can help her, Easton. Easton is dealing with PTSD from when he was in Afghanistan. As they work to find the killer, they try to work through their brokenness.

I could not put this book down. It was full of suspense, some romance, and twists. Loved it!

I volunteered to read and review an advanced readers copy of Dead Giveaway . This story is spectacular . Easton Ford is surprised to see his ex fiancee on the TV as a suspect in a murder case . He is definitely shocked when she shows up at his door after 15 years . Genevieve needs Easton's help . Quickly danger comes for them and Easton and Genevieve must work together to stop the real killer . They have a lot of history good and bad . Maybe they can have a second chance if they can stay alive and catch the killer . This story is action packed and suspense . It kept me on the edge of my seat .I highly recommend taking the time to read .

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. Imagine being stood up at the altar and 15 yrs. later the woman who changed your life at that day stands on your porch seeking help... Genevieve is part of a game a killer set her up to, but she hasn't any idea about the rules. Nichole Severn worked their relationship into the pages that has you believe in forgiveness. Literally being - kind of - forced to work together the two of the miss the almost obvious and have to pay for that. A very good story, that picks up where the first book in the series left off.

This is the second book in the series and boy does Nichole start it off with a bang. From the beginning it's full of danger, suspense, and twists and turns that will keep you trying to figure out who the serial killer is and why the killer wants revenge on Genevieve. She goes to Easton for help he's the only one who she can trust and who will keep her safe but, can he forgive her the past to help her. Great characters and you never know what's going to happen next. Can't wait to read more from Battle Mountain.

Severn’s books are intense with action and suspense, Dead Giveaway is the same. A serial killer is on the loose and DA Genevieve needs help from her ex, the man she left at the altar. Her reasons were justified but since they were teens it wasn’t handled so well. The way the serial killer killed those women is horrific, where does she come up with these ideas? I’m always intrigued to learn how author’s decide the reasons or methods of death, every book is unique. Easton and Genevieve have an incredible second chance love story. I received my copy early and wrote my review voluntarily.

From the few books I've read from this author, the suspense/thriller elements are done really, really well, while the romance elements aren't quite there. I didn't feel the connection or the chemistry between Easton and Genevieve, and I didn't feel their emotional hangups or how these impacted their relationship.

The epilogue, hinting at what's to come in the next book, was intriguing, but given the limited number of characters introduced in the series so far, I have no idea who the male MC will be.

I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Such an exciting tale of intrigue. We know the characters from book 1.
DA Genevieve Alexander returns home to a horrific event, a body, a killer and threats to her own life. Did she miss when putting a serial killer away. It would seem he is still at large and taunts her to be caught. She runs back to her former childhood sweetheart knowing that he will keep her safe, but does he really want her back in his life?
The story had me glued to my kindle, I didn't see the twist coming and my heart was in my throat as the end approached.
Great story, I highly recommend it.

This was a great read and I just devoured it in one session. The imagination that the author has with murder is scary - this one was really intense. I loved the way it really did keep you guessing throughout the novel - just loved that and is really kept me going till late in the night as I had to finish.

Fully recommend.

I was given an advance copy by the author but this in no way impacted my review.

Another suspenseful read from Nichole. I was up way too late one night because as I hit my "goal" for the night the edge of your seat suspense started and I couldn't stop! I hoped for Eason's story after reading Grave Danger and this was it. There was so much more to him that I even expected. I have to admit I got a little mad at Genevieve a few times... but in the end it all worked out and after lots of action, suspense, and twists and turns they got their happy.

There is so much suspense in this story that you will be on the edge of your seat from the beginning to the end. It is clear that Easton and Genevieve still have an attraction to each other and that deep down they love each other. And even with the horrendous method of the killings, there are still some humorous moments, and we get more of a look at the Ford family dynamics. This series is getting better and I can't wait for the next book.

Oh wow, This series keeps on getting better and better. This is a must read in my opinion if you like any type of romantic suspense with twists! I will say that this story really reels you in right from the beginning and keeps on going with non stop action. The two characters, Easton and Genevieve have their own personal demons they're battling which makes all the more interesting in my opinion. Nichole Severn

Serial killer is murdering women and Genevieve and Easton can’t find the connection. Will they be able to before Genevieve becomes a victim? A fast paced story where you are in the dark too. When they figure out the killer, it is a surprise. Will Easton be able to find Genevieve before it’s too late? Throughly enjoyed being back in Battle Mountain and learning Easton’s story.

A well written perfectly paced story pulling you in from the start. A standalone read with plenty of action keeping you turning the pages. This was about Genevieve and her involvement in a murder investigation and how she asked Easton to help her. I was pulled in as if I was right there. Not sure if there is more of Battle Mountain but hoping there is.

As much as I loved Weston and Chloe in book one of the Defenders of Battle Mountain series by author Nichole Severn I fell head over heels with Easton and Genevieve. Full of twists and turns as a DA Genevieve is being hunted by a serial killer, Eason battles his own PTSD from his time in Afghanistan. An exciting read that makes this a must for any Intrigue fan.
