Back in Spring Forest for the first time in twelve years, animal rescue worker Bethany Robeson already has her hands full with an inherited house and an overweight pooch named Meatball. She doesn’t dare make room for Shane Dupree, her former high school sweetheart, now a single dad. Bethany doesn't believe in starting over, but Shane, baby Wyatt and Meatball could be the family she always dreamed of…
I'm the New York Times bestselling author of more than fifty novels, including my debut, SEE JANE DATE (also available in cute TV movie form to stream). I write emotional, heartfelt romances for Harlequin Special Edition. I've also had two novels published under a secret pen name, but I will happily share if you message me to ask. I also wrote seven Special Edition novels under the pen name Meg Maxwell.
I'm a proud mom and animal devotee who lives on the southern coast of Maine. 4 new Harlequin Special Edition novels are coming in in 2026 starting with The Rancher's Famed Triplets, part of my Dawsons Family Ranch series (out now). Look for The Cowboy's Surprise Baby in July.
This at times felt as though it needed a little something more going on, something to make it a bit more of a page-turner.
There wasn’t much keeping Shane and Bethany apart, they were nice people who were nice together, they saw most things similarly including their opinion of his mother, so there wasn’t a lot of conflict in their relationship and that’s okay, it’s just with low conflict in the romance it felt like there needed to be a little more story from somewhere else, like maybe further exploring Bethany’s paternity, making that more of a focal point since that was easily one of the more emotionally engaging aspects of this novel.
I did find Shane’s amicable relationship with his ex refreshing when so often divorce is depicted with stereotypical vitriol, I also liked his mother’s arc even if it was a little hurried due to her status as a minor character, and I loved the dogs, Meatball, as well as the others were sweethearts, the author definitely had me invested in their furry little fates.
It's hard not to like a book about a dog(s) and it's carers. So, I liked this book and it comes to a suitably happy conclusion but... too simple? Too bland? Maybe I didn't connect with the main character enough. Well, I recommend this book if you need something uncomplicated with a happy ending. Sometimes books like this are soothing to me.
This was enjoyable enough writing, but I really had trouble liking the main character. She’s one of these people who has decided she can’t ever have love… even when it’s staring her in the face. I suppose that’s probably realistic for some people, but it’s agonizing to read about. You just wanna reach through the page and shake her!
Spice level: high PG-13 🌶🌶 There were two scenes of moderate spice in this. Not quite r-rated but considerably more than I’d prefer. Both scenes stop shy of the main event, if you know what I mean, which I appreciated. Still, I’d much prefer closed-door. 🤣🙈
This book felt like the author rushed and didn't really care about details. One pivotal part of the book one character literally changes complete outfits in the span of a door shutting. Going from sweats and a t-shirt to fully dressed in jeans and a Henley. It took away from what was going on as all I could focus on was the failure of any one of the many people who had to have proof read this book. Bethany was largely unlike able only because her only majority explored personality trait was her unwillingness to accept love. I feel this story could have been great, it just missed the mark.
I enjoyed this story and the reality of broken relationships, fear and protecting oneself against more hurt. I also enjoyed the magic a rescue dog can bring just by being themselves, with all of the hurt they have, usually, experienced at the hands of humans. This book showed how much happiness we can find when we let our hearts love, dogs, cats, and other humans included.
