Another great book in the Dog Grooming series. I love the comradadie among the "3 musketeers". The banter between Betsy & Granny is so funny. Always a murder just happens to turn up & always a rollercoaster ride to find out who did it. It keeps you guessing til the very end.

Amy Stewart moved home to Toluca Lake, CA after a disastrous relationship, and opened a pet salon along with her granny. Her sole other employee is her best friend from school, Betsy. In between making dogs look their best, the trio are off solving murder mysteries -- even when they don't want to.

When a friend at the local bank asked Amy to look into a missing Canadian man who was supposed to show up for a meeting at the bank but never arrived, she's not sure she's willing to do it, since they don't want to get involved in other crimes. But Amy agrees, and while heading out one night to Little Canada, Amy finds the man. In a bathroom. Killed with a hatchet. Now there's another murderer on the loose, and Amy and her granny Petunia are out to find a killer once again.

The problem is that they don't know anything about him, so they have to start from scratch. While the clues are all pointing to one person, Amy isn't sure that person is the guilty party. But who else could be a suspect, when everything is steering her in that direction?

To top it off, both surgeon Jacob and detective Mike are pursuing Amy, and she's feeling both guilty and torn. She hasn't given romance a thought, doesn't want to lead them on, and doesn't know who she likes better. So what's a girl to do?

Meanwhile, her cat Fluffy is in a conundrum himself. His love interest, Queen Elizabeth, has asked him a very special favor, and he wants to do everything he can to help her. But even Fluffy has his limits, and he might have to ask someone else to help him. It seems there are two in the household who are having romance problems, and neither one knows quite what to do...

However, finding a murderer this time out is different, with Amy having doubts and no help from the police, since she isn't able to either ask Mike or find him when she needs him. So Amy and Granny are on their own, and Little Canada isn't the only place they wind up where they don't belong...

This is the fifth book in the series and just as delightful as all the others. I do love the chapters with Fluffy, as he contemplates life and love in the feline masses. It's always fun and interesting to read what he has to say.

Meanwhile, we have Betsy and her ever-changing screenplay -- all because she spent a night in jail and is now deciding she needs to sell her story to an agent so it can be made into a movie. It's a hoot with the lines she comes up with, but at the same time, I'm grateful I don't have a Betsy in my own life. I'd probably stop answering the phone after awhile...

Then there's Petunia, who's still playing poker and teaching her 'life skills classes' to unsuspecting males, all of whom are in need of dire confidence in themselves. Those poor men. It comes at a cost, but at least they're learning something worthwhile, right?

At the last, there's Amy, who is such a muddle inside that she can't think straight outside when it comes to men. And murder keeps getting in the way. Her professional life is just fine, because she's doing what she wants -- grooming the creatures that mean most to her -- but it's the humans she has troubles with, and never more so than when they commit murder...

In the end, the story was intriguing so much that I read it in one sitting. It was almost exhausting with everything that was going on, and it was definitely hard to put down, which is just what a book is supposed to achieve. What it also achieved was finding a murderer that came as a complete surprise. We find out at the same time as Amy, so it was just like being there when it occurred (which, of course, we are). It was unexpected and worth reading, and it all made sense when it came together. All in all, the book was put together well with taut prose and a very good plot...and I have to say that I'm team Jacob -- which I usually don't take sides, but in this case I'll make an exception. Highly recommended.

I received a copy of this book from the author and Booksprout, but this in no way influenced my review.

This is book five of the Dog Groomer Mystery series featuring Amy Stewart, her Granny Petunia and their friend Betsy who all live in the small Californian town of Toluca Lake. After moving from Pine Grove back to the place she spent time with her gran when not with her oddball father growing up, Amy has opened a pet and grooming called salon Creature Comforts. Her grumpy gran visits to annoy her and Betsy, when she isn’t playing poker and to cover when Betsy is trying to write her screenplay. They have already solved a few murder cases and their last case was of her neighbour Jacob’s long time missing aunt, which turned out not quite as expected, with family secrets and black sheep involved. Now Amy has got both Jacob and a local police officer Mike, interested in her romantically, both turning up with flowers for her at the exact same time! She has been trying to avoid both of them since then, but it is a small town where everybody and their dog knows each other. Amy gets a fit forgetful as the weekend arises and forgets to bank the shops takings and when she goes to her local bank, her favourite teller Charlotte seems quite distracted! Apparently a rich Canadian businessman was supposed to meet with some buyers at the bank and sell them a treasure map for a local yet secret gold mine. He never turned up for the meeting and Charlotte comes over to ask them to investigate, fearing the man, Steve Henry has been murdered!
They can’t get much information online about the guy and figure they will try out an area called Little Canada, which is full of bars and Canadian foodie places. Amy of course, ends up finding a dead body in the toilets and it is the missing man. Now they have to figure out who killed him and who the mystery woman is, that Amy found written in the dead man’s notebook. Who else knew of the secret treasure map? It seems the Canadian might have been swayed by a beautiful woman and let his lips do a little bit too much talking, where others might overhear him! The trio have to work on all the clues they have, as well as a few red herrings given to them in their pursuit of the true killer, whilst the ineffective Detective Rotund keeps Detective Mike Fine tied up in useless tasks, adamant he has the guilty party already in custody. A farce of epic proportions in a police force that has done little to solve any of the recent murders in town. Amy’s two possible love interests are giving her a lot of concern as she is uncertain what to do about the situation, after her bad dating record so far. She needs to concentrate on the case, which proves a lot more dangerous than they could ever have imagined, as guns are drawn and shots fired! An amusing tale of a dog mad groomer and amateur sleuth and her equally oddball Granny and friend, who are all along for the ride and adventures, in amongst their own day to day living. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Another winner in the Dog Groomer series! In this book between the red-herrings, twists and turns and laughs, we find Amy who had returned to her small town of Toluca Lake CA and opened a pet grooming shop with her grumpy poker playing grandmother, Petunia and friend and shop helper Betsy. When Amy's friend from the local bank comes to her and says a man from Canada was supposed to meet with some other foreigners and he never showed up, she was worried something happened to him, especially since she heard he had a treasure map. Amy and Petunia don't really want to get involved, but they decided to look into it. When they find the Canadian dead in a bar bathroom with an ax in his back and Amy's friend becomes a suspect, Amy, Petunia and Betsy get involved. Betsy keeps coming up with weird scenarios since she is writing the greatest screenplay ever according to her. This becomes one of the most dangerous of the cases they have ever been in. Will they be able to solve this case? Added to this we have Fluffy Amy's smart cat working on solving a mystery of his own. It seems his lady love, Queen Elizabeth had lost her diamond collar and he vows to find it which also leads him into problems. While reading the mystery and getting stumped along the way, I laughed a lot at Granny and her poker mania as well as Betsy and her script and crazy conversations. I love this series and the characters each different from one another making this series so much fun! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

If I didn't need the word "howl" in a book title for a challenge spot, I would not have finished this book. The banter between the three main characters made me roll my eyes so many times, I was afraid Mom was right and they'd get stuck that way.

When a bank employee shows up at the door late one evening, one of them wonders if the employee has come to apologize for her having to wait in line at the bank that morning. Really? Then when a man misses a business meeting, they jump to the conclusion that he's been murdered. Again, really? Their small town must not be as safe as they claim if that's their first thought.

The book was published in 2021, only a year ago, but one of the characters muses “I wondered how she had gotten so good at typing. Most ladies fifty and up still poked with one finger like Granny.” I'm guessing she doesn't know many "ladies fifty and up," as most of us have been typing -- not just one-finger "poking" -- for decades!

I could give many more examples of things that are just plain bad, but I stopped taking notes after a while. Somehow, the three managed to work out who the killer was, but you won't convince me that it wasn't sheer dumb luck. Even harder to believe was that they figured it out and the police didn't!

I have several other books by this author in Mt. TBR, and I'm now more than a little hesitant to read them. Maybe I'll take a chance and try one from her other series? At least then I'll know if it's the author or the series/characters who left such a bad taste in my mouth.

In this latest mystery in the Dog Groomers Mysteries series Amy, her Granny, Petunia, and Betsy are in more danger than they have experienced in the past. The mysterious death of a visiting Canadian businessman sends them on an adventure they never expected. A stolen treasure map and chases down back alleyways keep you guessing as to what will happen next. Each new suspect seems to be a dead end that eventually leads them into the drug underworld of Little Canada in Suburban Los Angeles. In the end Amy’s keen eye for details and instincts saves them and solves the murder. In addition, Fluffy the cat has his own mystery to solve. The disappearance of the diamond collar of his love interest, the cat across the way named Queen Elizabeth keeps him focused on gaining the Queen’s affection. He too has close calls and uses his wits to find the missing collar. This is another great book in the series that keeps you wanting more.

Who Killed the Canadian Businessman ? . . .

Amy Stewart had moved home to Toluca Lake and started a pet salon business with her Granny Petunia. Her other employee is Betsy, her best friend.

When the body of a businessman, with a hatchet stuck in his back and his hand holding a small bottle of maple syrup, is discovered at a local bar, Amy and Granny are on the case to make sure their friend stays out of jail. Who killed Steve Henry? Did he have the treasure map? They will need to watch their backs this time or they might end up as the killer’s next choice of victims, especially when they go to places they probably shouldn’t.

This is a busy story. The cat Fluffy also has some goings on to take care of. And Amy still hasn’t chosen between two men interested in her. But this murder will keep everyone busy. Will they find the killer? I have a feeling this one will keep you guessing until the last page!

Amy, Granny and Betsy are solving another murder and they have a short time to figure it out or their friend may end up in jail. Fluffy is also working on the mystery of the missing collar and that is a wild tale all on its own. The characters are terrific and a little quirky. The storyline is very entertaining as unexpected situations keep happening. I love Granny, who is her own person, doing her own thing, and speaking her own mind. Such a tough old bird. The ending brought everything together nicely.

Granny, Betsy, and Amy have another case to solve when Amy finds the man she was asked to locate and unfortunately he won't be walking or talking any time soon. There are plenty of antics for these ladies to get up to while trying to work out this murder as well as dodgy situations, laughs, crazy characters, some red herrings, supposed hidden treasure and a page turning story to see who had an axe to grind along with a new adventure for Fluffy!

Cute book

I enjoyed getting to know the characters in Amy’s town. There are lots of interesting & odd people. Add in the animals and you have a cute story. The murder mystery was a little hard to follow with Betsy’s acting out different characters when trying to get information from people. Granny’s poker playing was amusing. Overall I liked the book.

Really great reading. I do wish Amy would get her mind to a place where she can be comfortable choosing a sweet man for a companion. Life is hard no matter how much time you spend trying to figure it out. Hopefully it will be sooner than later.

When a visiting Canadian is found dead at a local bar, Amy, Petunia and Betsy are on the case. The best part of this one is Amy’s cat’s romance with a neighboring cat, written in the cat’s voice. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
