When Yankee soldier Cash Landry opens his eyes, the last thing he expects is to discover he is the prisoner of a sweet-looking, tart-tongued Dixie belle. Hidden in her attic, no less. McKenzie McIntyre, the Dixie belle in question, is even less thrilled with the situation than he is. She already has more than enough stress in her life. Thanks to the war, one uncle is confirmed dead and the other is among the missing. Aunt Maeve, her missing uncle’s wife, is half out of her mind with grief. Most of the slaves have fled. And to make matters worse, now she must nurse this no-good Yankee back to health. And when he’s well, what then? Turn him in? Let him go? Even McKenzie doesn’t know what she will do with him. Lucky for her, the decision is taken out of her hands when Cash escapes and makes his way back to the fighting. When the war ends, he returns home to New York. His estranged father is dead, and through no effort of his own, Cash is suddenly a very wealthy young man. While settling his father’s estate, he discovers a couple of mysterious investments his father had made in California. Curious, Cash books passage on a steamer bound for California to investigate for himself. In the meantime, the war has left McKenzie and Aunt Maeve virtually destitute. With what little money they have left, McKenzie books passage on the same ship as Cash for herself, her aunt, and their trusted friend and servant, Jeremiah. McKenzie has no real plan for what she’ll do when they get there. Her only hope is that Aunt Maeve’s sister will take them in until she can find work. Plans seldom go as envisioned. When the last of McKenzie’s money is stolen, she is forced to go to work in one of the seedier waterfront saloons. When Cash learns that the saloon owner plans to force McKenzie into a life of prostitution, he must come up with a plan to rescue her. And then what? Deny the feelings he suddenly has for McKenzie McIntyre and go about his life as if she never existed? Act on his baser instincts and claim her as his own? Or . . . God forbid! . . . marry her? Cash Landry’s life is about to change in ways he never expected!
Omg, this book was so much better than the last book I read, "The Vampire Queen's Servant"!! Ironically, this has a fraction of the reviews.
When the prologue is good, you know you're probably going to enjoy the rest of the book. The book starts off in the midst of the Civil War. Jeremiah, McKenzie's family's slave and her best friend, finds Yankee soldier Cash Landry wounded and unconscious near the McIntyre family plantation. McKenzie nurses Cash back to health. He leaves, and I was thinking to myself how is he and McKenzie going to see each other again? Neither of them expect to see each other again. This is where the author cleverly plans for both of them to be going via ship to San Francisco.
I liked the story (aka the plot) more than the actual romance between Cash and McKenzie. The ending threw me for a loop and I was shocked and mesmerized. I was right in how
Also, Cash's stepmother was truly the Evil Stepmother who could give Snow White's stepmom a run for her money.
I loved the epilogue with all the children and all the HEA between multiple couples, who I suspected would end up together.
This book was almost a clean read but not quite. In clean reads, there's no mention of sex, right? Anyway, it shouldn't offend anyone, but I wouldn't have anyone under 13 read it.
I'm looking forward to reading more from JoAnna Marie!
This quirky but entertaining Civil War story and beyond with a bit of humor involved is for those who like something different than the usual. MacKenzie, a Southern belle, who tended to an injured but sweet-talking Yank comes across him on her way to California, depending on him to rescue her from an abusive ordeal. Much imagination and action for an out-of-ordinary experience in their travels together keeps one's attention throughout with a surprise ending. Recommended for someone who enjoys a different perspective on this time in history.
The civil war and all the changes it brought. The hardships and losses but thru it all unexpected love. Great love and along a happily ever after for more than one person. How the chance meeting of an injured soldier and the people who took care of him would change the lives of so many!
No this is not an explicit sex book Its a romance book with well written in Intimacy and awkward scenes that make A nice fun romantic clean early American Book.
Not a clean read. Scrolled through the first couple chapters with the "Look Inside" feature on Amazon. By Chapter 2 or 3 it's easy to tell it's not going to be a clean read. Won't be trying this book.
