The shadow war has begun. No matter the successes under his belt, Captain Jackson Adams fails in the one mission that matters most—family. Home to visit his ailing father, Jackson and his brother can’t stop bickering long enough to manage repairs around the ranch before duty again calls. The League of Sol is in a silent war with the Terran Coalition. But Coalition Intelligence’s hands are tied without actionable proof—until an undercover asset is murdered and another goes missing inside an independent megacorp. Nosamo Aerothermic has made a killing through atmospheric terraforming, creating stable planetary environments for human habitation. With refugees flooding the Terran border, their newest development is guaranteed to revolutionize the industry. And draw more than League attention. Both foreign and domestic enemies descend on the space station, complicating Jackson and his crew’s rescue of their intelligence officer. But when the League’s nefarious plans for Nosamo’s technology come to light, what was a simple heist becomes a desperate gamble, and Jackson is forced to ignore protocol in a race to save the Terran Coalition. Before time runs out.
Another enjoyable, heart-pounding read from these authors. The conflict continues as Jackson and his Coalition team once again go head-to-head with Vassaily and his comrades as this “cold war” heats up. The world building is spot on, and the characters continue to develop more depth without any slowing of the action. A well done, fast-paced science fiction spy novel. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
Jackson Adams leads a clandestine team countering the League on the fringes of space. There’s a cost of doing this behind-the-scenes fighting, pretending to be someone you aren’t, giving up family and security. Even the very best leaders and agents become jaded, calloused. With a family that feels Jack is shirking his responsibility at home, now that the shooting war is over, tensions on Jackson are building. Did they cause his lapse of judgement in risking his team members to chase a link to a past mission? Can his team forgive him and regain their trust? When Jackson’s father dies, he unexpectedly leaves Jack half the ranch, but Jackson never knew until too late. Is this his call to go home and mend things with family? Or should he stay with his new family, the ones who risk their lives with him? Can he endure the tension of having to decide? Good story, with lots of action and adventure. Enjoy!
Again, the author has managed to give me an adrenaline-laced heart-pounding thriller of an adventure (which is excellent in and of itself) combined with a poignant revelation of the personal cost of being a secret agent. Families spell love T-I-M-E but being required to spend a lot of time away from your family and not to disclose why does not foster functional families, let alone happy families. The cost of being in military service is higher than I realized - thank you to this author for enlightening me on this very important issue.
I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
Cold Conflict: Deception Fleet Book 2 by Daniel Gibbs. Cold Conflict is an outstanding sequel. Although the military science fiction is fiction, Daniel Gibbs writes every book in a realistic way. Captain Jackson Adams is not perfect, he has family issues. The League of Sol is after Nosamo Aerotgermic’s atmospheric environment. The fighting is intense and the scenes are incredibly written. FYI, the Lion of Judah is still missing. Looking forward to reading Book 3 in the series. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
This is the first sci-fi book I’ve ever read where one of the characters has an active faith in God. He prays at crisis points, he is faithful to do his job and he speaks of his faith to his team members. Not in an obnoxious way but very gently. Great action, lots of dialogue, a military slant on battle scenes, multiple locations and settings. Storyline carries through several books. This review was after I finished book 2–I’ll definitely read more!!
Excellent series set in the Lion of Judah universe
Jackson Adams is a spy for the Terran Coalition. He works undercover, infiltrating terror cells and other "low places" where honorable soldiers and law enforcement officers are unwelcome (shot on sight). His family doesn't understand why he won't come home and help them run the cattle ranch ... but Jack is on a mission, to keep the Terran Coalition safe. This is a high-octane spy thriller, in a space opera setting. Enjoy!
