Cold Cases is a book featuring factual short stories about “fascinating” cold cases that have been solved. Although, I’m not sure fascinating is the word I’d use.
Some of the cases are intriguing, sure. But most are fairly mundane / predictable stories. Out of all of them, I’d say the clown one caught my eye, just because why the costume? But yeah,
This collection of chapter-length cases brings to mind "Forensic Files," "The New Detectives," or similar anthology-style true crime shows. Don't expect stunning journalism here, but the cases are interesting, and were mostly unfamiliar to me prior to hearing this audiobook.
4.5 ⭐ s Justice Finally Of course Robert Keller did an excellent job with the Cold Cases he's discovered that ultimately through the use of DNA and other advances in criminal detection were finally solved. What saddened me because so many years/decades have passed are the statute of limitations were up for vicious brutal rapes of women and children. If there wasn't also a murder that occurred the perpetrators couldn't be prosecuted.
Sometimes while DNA showed who the killer rapist was, prosecutors didn't always feel they had a strong enough case to charge the murderer accordingly, so a plea bargain was made for seven or less years of imprisonment. Meaning parole eligibility in 3 years or less. In many cases the parents never lived to see their child's killer finally identified and brought in.
The later cases also intrigued me enough to research for further information on my own such as in the case of Sheila Keen Warren. It was determined that she committed a murder in 1990. She was arrested in 2017 and has been denied bail. Sheila's facing first degree murder charges and her trial was delayed because of COVID-19. It was supposed to start in September 2021 but the date was moved to March 2022. Her defense attorneys tried to get her released on house arrest but the judge denied it (this info was based on news reports published between April & August of 2021). Overall I enjoyed Robert Keller's presentation of these cases.
I listened to this on audiobook format. Succinct and non sensationalist coverage of several true crime cases - most in the USA. I was only familiar with a handful. The theme of DNA technology helping to solve cold cases runs throughout. Told in a non technical manner, so suitable for the lay person to read.
This author writes quick read TC books at a Malthusian pace and they are always satisfying. His "Murder Most Vile" series is my favorite but this new cold case series is turning out to be really interesting too. Police work and crime science can be fascinating to read about and you get 18 obscure stories to devour. Happy reading!
I really enjoy reading about cold cases being solved. Sometimes the solution comes too late to bring the killer to justice, but identifying the murderer still brings satisfaction.
When the killer is convicted and sentenced to prison, especially life without parole, I can hear that satisfying metallic clang of the prison door.
Wow. The last story, the Christy Mirack murder, happened in my town. I followed it all those years. My grandparents lived in that same complex where Christy lived and was killed. It always haunted me. I am so glad they finally busted him. It is so creepy that he worked at the Chameleon, where all of my friends and I used to go every weekend in the early 90s.
This book detailed 18 cold cases in the United States and England that were solved much later by DNA technology. The cases occurred as early as the 1950s and as late as the 1990s. I have read a lot of true crime books, and many of the stories I had heard of, but some of them I didn't know about. I highly recommend this book to other true crime readers.
Mr. Keller’s series about solved cold cases is an interesting read and provides some insight on how cold cases are reviewed and then resolved. As noted, DNA testing has been evolving for years, and in most cases here, that testing has resulted in uncovering the criminal. The victims finally have justice served.
I like reading Robert Killer's book on solved cold cases because they get straight to the point with facts and how they are used to help solve these cases. Anyone who likes reading true crime should definitely read this author's book.
A truly unique book that delves into the world of cold cases involving murder, and how modern technology has brought many of them back to the forefront, and solved them. Definitely a very interesting book.
I have read other books by Mr. Keller and enjoyed them. This book of cold cases is well written and lets you know that these types of cases can be solved. This is a book for true crime readers.
The content was interesting but editing needs work. Lots of little grammatical and spelling errors. That being said, the cases profile are assume of the most known cold cases in the US. It's good to know some of these have been solved.
Robert Keller does an amazing job of bringing the reader into the cold case without adding too much tech jargon so as to make it impossible to understand. I have fast become a fan.
Again really short and informative read. The only problem I had was that every chapter had to mention the advancement of DNA technology in the exact same phrase. It got a little bit tiring after a while.
This was a good collection of true crime stories. I love anything true crime, however, there were a lot of editing errors. I found this mildly distracting and a little confusing, but the idea is easy to grasp.
So glad for dna analysis. They get murderers behind bars. I like to read the books of Robert Keller. It is still hard to believe how wicked people can be
