In just the second volume, the Deimon High Devil Bats football team of misfits face their definitive rivals; the Oujuo White Knights. Polar opposites across an extensive social gap, these Knights are what the Devil Bats are not. A disciplined team with solid fundamentals in both offense and defense. If not for a slight snafu, the White Knights should be drubbing our misfit team and they are but for a quirky start, the Devil Bats still a very slim chance of winning this one.

The second game needs another volume to wrap this up and this reader would definitely be reading it.

2024 reread : I still love this. The introduction of the ojo knights as a rival team is really well done and I love Mamori joining the team. There are also the first scenes with my ship so I am obligated to love this.

Love seeing Sena standing up for himself and chosing to be part of the team. I love that he is starting to share Hiruma and Kurita's dream.

Another solid volume! Some highlight moments for the characters and some interesting forshadowing
I like that already in the second volume the narrative is expanding outside the main character and his team, leaving space for the rivals
Some thematic work is being slipped in too
I think the game explanations arent quite that effective actually, they are too long and detailed and breal the flow of the read for me
Ill be looking forward to vol. 3!

[NOTE: I’m rereading this entire series; I read it for the first time probably around a decade ago.]

Volume 2 introduces the Oujou White Knights who are Deimon's primary foils in this series. They're another great team with some unique characters/rivals, specifically Shin, Sakuraba, and Takami (though we don't learn more about him until a future volume). The appeal of this volume is h0w Oujou is Deimon's TOTAL opposite, but also Sena's growing dedication and desire to win.

The art is still kind of rough in this volume, but it's already improving.

Sports is inherently a binary. Two different teams. winners and losers. And while the interactions within the main team of a series like this carries a lot of weight, equally important are the opponents they go up against. when everyone in the series is striving for the same goal, it makes things a little more interesting when you see the opponents as rounded people in their own regard.

I bring all this up because in volume 2 we meet the Ojo White Knights -- another football team and one of the targets our Devil Bats are specifically aiming for. And I like that the book takes the time to show them as people, not just football players. We especially get to know a few members -- Shin, who's looking for a true challenge; Sakuraba, who's not sure WHAT he's looking for; Otawaro, the dumb-as-bricks lineman who loves the game and his team; and Takami, the quarterback who tries to keep an even head amid them all.

But more than that, it's nice to see Hiruma start to show glimpses of the depth that makes him the most popular character in the series by far. In the first volume he was domineering and cruel, using whatever he needed to to get what he wants. But this second volume gives us a couple instances showing there's a lot more to Hiruma than was initially shown. Sena may be the main character, but in a lot of ways Eyeshield 21 is more Hiruma's story.

I love so much of what this series chooses to be, even now, when so few of our core players are in place. :)

Eyeshield 21: The False Hero continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (8–16) of the on-going manga series.

After Sena Kobayakawa refuses to quit, Yoichi Hiruma, the captain and quarterback of the team, tricks Mamori Anezaki, Sena Kobyakawa's best friend and bully protector, to make her join the football club as a manager, in order to keep her eye and protect Sena Kobyakwa.

A shocking surprise is that they have to face the Ojo White Knights in their next match. The Ojo White Knights are considered the second best team in Kantō and the Deimon Devil Bats are naturally nervous about it. All the temporary players want more information about Eyeshield 21 from Yoichi Hiruma, who tells a lie that he is from Notre Dame.

During the big day, Sena Kobayakawa nearly leaves the team after hearing that Seijuro Shin, the ace linebacker of the Ojo White Knights, injured two players and that he is the primary target. However, after all the players express their hope to beat them – he joins in. The White Knights are caught off guard when Sena Kobayakawa makes a touchdown in the beginning of the match. They hope for the second touchdown but as Seijuro Shin enters, everything changes.

This tankōbon is written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata. For the most part, I really liked the story. I like the development of Sena Kobayakawa and his first real game with a formable team. Murata's illustrations were beautifully rendered and show the promise that he would one day grow into.

All in all, Eyeshield 21: The False Hero is a wonderful continuation to a new series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

Apalagi panel terakhir sebelum bersambung, astaga lucu banget Sena berkali2 berubah pikiran gituuu sampe bikin Mamori bingung 🤣

Artinya aku udah mulai ahli memahami kondisi orang lain ✨
Oke, tadi terakhir masih bersambung di scene Eyeshield 21 balik dari kaburnya utk ikut sesi pertandingan tengah kedua ✌️

Sena's personal growth has already begun -- for a pashiri that has been alone most of his life, finding a common goal, and people to fight for that goal with... it's very cool to see, especially so early on. Meanwhile, Sakuraba is the natural foil: tall, handsome, some natural talent -- I've always felt very connected to Sakuraba's journey and self doubt. Shin is, as always, badass -- love seeing Shin, he's one of my favorite characters. I also forgot that Shinryuuji HS makes an appearance so early on -- they are my least favorite rival team, Agon is **shivers** just downright evil.

Kind of annoyed that they’re playing the best team for the second game of the tournament, it’s obvious that they’re gonna lose. But the game has been fun, as a casual football fan I’m digging it, it’s not high level football but for what it’s giving me I’m liking it. I’m hoping that them mentioning a kicker means foreshadowing that the Devil Bats will improve and get better as time goes on.

2025 reread:

Mamori really is the queen of the "Hey!!!! He said no pickles!!!!!!!" girlies

Could live without the character whose thing is farting, but Sakuraba is one of my favs in the whole series, his story is so good...

I love a main team that's not just underdogs, but also scrappy and nasty... the Devil Bats are such a fun group to follow!

The Oujou boys are kind of endearing, i had forgotten how much i liked them.

But the Nagas can die. I mean it. Ok, maybe I don't mean it, it's more like Agon can die, the other Nagas are tolerable I guess so they can not die if they want....

This volume really showcases the strength of the worse as a whole. The paralleled imposter syndrome of Sakuraba and Sena is a great note to explore for shounen manga and I think one that’s not quite as common as you’d expect.

Hiruma has to come up with a plan to stop Mamori from interfering with Sena playing on his American football team, the Deimon Devilbats. Mamori just wants to protect Sena, and she doesn't want him around the dangerous Hiruma (even though she doesn't know he's playing IN the game as the amazing running back Eyeshield 21), so she is allowed to join as secretary to keep her eye on them. After having beaten the Koigahama Cupids in the previous volume, the Devilbats are now up against the White Knights from Ojo. There's no way they can win because Ojo has Shin--an incredible light-speed running back who can rival Sena's speed. Shin is powerful and really means business, and when Sena hears horror stories about how badly other players have been injured playing against him, he wants to back out and stop playing. But team spirit gets to him and he enters the game anyway. Things look promising when Shin isn't in the game--he's on the bench--but then he gets sent in and makes short work of Sena over and over again. Hiruma declares a win hopeless, but even if they can't win, Sena still wants to try again to get past Shin. . . .

One great thing about this manga is that it features the "villains"--the other teams--as sympathetic characters as well. Shin has flaws (for instance, he can't use electronics without breaking them) and is dark and obsessed, but has an amazing ability to analyze other people's movements and saw right through Sena's eyeshield disguise (so he knows what his real identity is). I love that Sena admires him even though they're on opposite teams. Interesting also are the stories behind other major Ojo players: Sakuraba, a tall wide receiver, is better known as a screen star and looks like a model, so everyone wants to take his picture and bill him as the hero of the team, but he knows Shin is the team's real ace and he's only advantaged somewhat because he's so tall. And their quarterback, Takami, is a physically disadvantaged player because an injury from his childhood prevents him from running, but his phenomenal calculations allow him to throw the ball with precision. Another thing that's wonderful about this manga is that the good guys sometimes lose. If a team called the Deimon Devilbats with a demonic quarterback can be considered the good guys.

YAHAAA!!!

Do you know Kobayakawa Sena? How about Eyeshield 21 from the Deimon Devil Bats?

Eyeshield 21 is a manga about american football written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata. It became an anime on Aril 6, 2005 and ended with 145 episodes on March 19, 2008. This anime is sponsored by NFL Japan and aired in countries like korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

The story revolves around high school student Kobayakawa Sena who loves football and has a incredible talent when it comes to running, he has an intense agility. He had a remarkable talent in running because of bullies. In his younger days he was taught by his friend Riku to run away from bullies that is why he developed his talent. This caught the eye of Deimon High School Football Captain and quarterback Yoichi Hiruma who forces Sena to become the team’s running back. Hiruma and his friend Kurita who is also a member of the Devil bats swore to be in the Christmas bowl so they try hard to get teammates who are interested in playing American football.

Slowly but surely the team recruited potential players such as Taro Raimon a baseball player who excels in catching, he became the team’s wide reciver and the so-called Ha-Ha Brothers who became the defensive linemen. The Deimon Devil Bats made a mark to the people watching them and made rivalry in other schools like the Ojo White Knights.
Sena and the rest of the Devil Bats successfully entered the Chrismas Bowl which they have dreamed off and competed against the American football team led by Panther.
The series concludes with Sena becoming the captain of the Deimon Devil Bats when Hiruma and Kurita go off to college. All of the main characters are shown in the final chapter to be in college or playing amateur-league football while maintaining a job.

Watch the anime and read the manga, so you can experience the thrill of this American Football anime.

This is the second book of the Eyeshield 21 series and it is about Sena's football team, The Deimon Devil Bats against the top high school team the Ojou White Knights. Even if Sena is fast, Ojou has the best defensive line and one of the best offensive in the league. In the game he tried to get past Ojou's ace player Shin but he just gets knocked down again and again. But he eventually got through only once and that was the last time in the whole game. But in the end after all that effort they still lost against Ojou even after multiple tries.
I can connect this to many athletes just like the Deimon Devil Bats who try as hard as they can and they will succeed once of multiple tries but in the end they will still lose but some get successful and start a career.
I rate this volume a 4 because I still think the plot is the same as any other cartoon where the main character meets someone better, then they do some kind of face off and the main character would lose. Then, as a result the character is going to train more and more until they face off again.

Agh I love this series I love this series I love this series.

Guys, this is just the most fun anything can ever be. I mean - I love every character, even though there are a million of them because it's like, sports manga, duh, we've got to know every player on every team because otherwise how would everything make me sad?

Also, Shin is the cutest. Just - the most adorable guy ever. And I mean, he's a little threatening whilst playing football, but man, he's just so cute.

I don't have much to say about this series except it's cute and read it because it's the most adorable thing in the world. Even if you don't think you'll like it because you don't like sports, I mean, I don't care about sports at all and it's just one of my favorite manga series, honestly.

This is definitely a massive step up from the first volume, with less wacky physical comedy and a bit more actual football. I don't know football! I barely understand it! Luckily we finally get some explanation and rules in this volume. That also gives our protagonist, Sena, a more definite path to improvement as he starts to understand more of the game and how he can attempt to compete. I'm still not in love with the series - the decision to fight some built up ultimate rivals in the second volume might end up being disappointing - but hey I didn't hate myself for reading this volume so I count that as a win.

Sena's character are arise, try harder for team mates. His path still blurry, yet he still try his best by put a fight with strongest high school linebacker in japan, shin seijyuro. It was my favorite part. :)

Pretty good second volume. The team expands their management personnel and goes up against the premiere team in the area; the White Nights. Sena meets a potential nemesis in Wide Receiver / Linebacker White Night Shin. Fun volume with an excellent early cliffhanger for vol 3.
