i've never read a self-help book, as i never found myself interested in them. however, i received an arc copy of this book -- and decided to give it a try. the best way to describe this book would be: if you're lost in the world of finances, and truly cannot navigate it; try reading this book. it's the perfect little guide to finances, and helps introduce many good (and bad) things that come along with the world of money.
with starting my life has come with a lot of questions regarding finances, and this book helped to answer a lot of those. i like how informative the book is, and there aren't many details that can be listed as "unnecessary", as it's very straightforward and to the point. of course, because it's a nonfiction book, there isn't any drama. however, i appreciate the authors adding their personal journeys into the book. it added for a extra touch, allowing the authors to connect with the audience on a more personal level -- which i think was nice. i also like how it included interviews that the authors had conducted while writing this book, which broke things up a little bit. i also thought that the charts, graphs, and tables that were included in the book were nice too -- allowing the reader to really absorb all the information that was being provided. while reading this book, it becomes apparent that both authors truly know what is being talked about in this book, along with have done extensive research on the topic. as a reader, i appreciated that.
what i wasn't a fan of with this book was the extensive talk about football. i knew this book was primarily about sports (it's literally in the name), but i thought that it would discuss all sports. however, the book only really touches on football and the NFL... rarely discussing any other sport. i'm a fan of football, so i didn't mind it too much... but i think switching it up a little bit would have been nice. the authors do continuously connect what they are talking about to real life situations, primarily about football, so switching the sport up would have been nice.
overall, this book was good. it's a short review because i don't have too much to say about it. i do recommend this book to anyone who is maybe a lil lost with finance, or are looking to get a better grasp on things. this book is informative about the topic, and will teach you a lot. just be prepared to also educate yourself on football
I have often wondered how sports stars go broke. I learned a lot about how that happens in this book. Written by pros, this book gives a great overview of all the costs associated with being a sports professional and explains strategies for athletes to be financially responsible. The awesome thing is these strategies could apply to anyone.
I have a nephew who will be in the pros in the coming years, he’s still in high school, but highly sought after. I’m going to give him and his parents a copy of this book. Most of us have not been taught how to organize our finances effectively, and a tool like this can help.
This book may not have initially captured my full interest, but upon closer examination, I realized its tremendous value for athletes and aspiring entrepreneurs. I was particularly impressed by the level of detail provided and the examples the authors laid out to provide us with a better understanding. This book is an inspiring and enlightening read, as it emphasizes the importance of taking control of both our financial well-being and overall wellness. I thoroughly enjoyed the authors' personal experiences about their professional lives as an athlete and in the financial industry, making this a relatable read. While it may not have resonated strongly with me personally, I can see how it would be beneficial to those who are looking to empower themselves financially. The book offers practical tips for overcoming common financial challenges, and it effectively guides readers towards achieving financial success while maintaining a balanced professional and personal life. The section that I did find interesting is how the authors presented facts clearly and provided actionable advice on managing finances and securing one's income. Even as a non-athlete, I found value in this book, making it accessible to anyone, regardless of their background or aspirations. This is one book that you can come back to and reference when needed.
Take a Win in Personal Well-being and Finance With This Book
I have heard and read many times before that the best discipline for daily life routines or business management can come from discipline in practice seen and learned from performers in the fields of sports and arts. I was so excited to read this book and it's hard to put down. This financial win book is a healthy addition to any individual's mental health journey as well. Because sorting our lives in order also entails putting our finances in order as well. The purposeful daily regimen, the drive, the mental core and mindset, the competitiveness and resiliency are core attributes to their performances, among others. Transforming these to either business or personal financial success, are worth learning and gaining in life. To read a guidebook written by the tandem of Rob Welsh, a financial empowerment expert, and, Jonathan Scott, a former NFL offensive tackle, is already a first step towards a win. We have seen how former athletes like Kobe Bryant and Michael Strahan, among others, have succeeded in their careers post-retirement through business and other professional endeavors. And the way to gaining such transformations are shared in this book by Welsh and Scott. How is it that most of us toil daily for money and end our lives just like the same way. Shouldn't a life well-lived mean that working hard for money must also mean making money give us the kid of life that we deserve? Welsh and Scott helps us gain the abilities, the right mindset and the direction needed to achieve that. Personal stories are shared in this book, that offer the rationale for taking those directions. And I love that relevant bible verses were also included in this book. Right off the bat, I liked the first part that's about understanding and keeping the paycheck. The other things that I also liked in this book are about financial empowerment and making the budget, the business mindset and the cash flow quadrant, how to win even through some losses and the abundance/scarcity mindset chart. The best parts for me were about the rules of money and especially the unspoken tax and financial strategies! I find it awesome that I learned a new word too, that I need to create in myself, which is "athletepreneur" and that there are steps to help in transitioning towards a life of success. A bonus true life lessons from real people are also found at the end of this book. If you're interested in finding out how some people have success after success, or simply interested in achieving your deserved personal well-being, or needing the right stuff to figure out how to gain control over personal finances, then this guidebook is a must-have. I believe that a legacy is not just about a career, which not everyone can have, but is more importantly about a life well-lived, which everyone can have.

Personal finances has long been one of those secrets kept until we find ourselves unexpectedly adults. For some people, this happens when they are eighteen on the dot: get out of your parents house and take care of yourselves. For some people, this happens much later. The fact remains that as youth, we aren’t taught very much about personal finance and how to make your money work for you. In The Winning Playbook: Strategies for Life on and off the Field by Rob Welsh and Jonathan R. Scott, we are given a comprehensive overview of money in all aspects. The chapters are each told from the perspective of the writers: Welsh and Scott both have the opportunity to give their experience and consequential outcome from their personal lives. It allows the reader to digest multiple viewpoints which is necessary as you don’t want to have narrow or tunnel vision when it comes to money. Welsh has experience as a U.S. Marine and a pastor whereas Scott has experience in professional sports: namely football and the NFL. These two unique perspectives are united under the banner of personal finance and the information they provide is useful to all: regardless of whether you play football or not. The only downside to the book is the extensive discussion regarding football. It is to be expected, of course, that the book would cover this topic heavily based on one of the authors and the book title however if sports is not your thing, you might find yourself disconnected from the content. The book is also American by nature so if you are a reader from another country there may be information that does not apply to you. That being said, the core messages of the book are still very useful and it is still a good read. If you have been curious about the world of finance and want to supplement the education, or perhaps lack thereof, that you have received on the topic, you would benefit from picking up a copy of The Winning Playbook: Strategies for Life on and off the Field by Rob Welsh and Jonathan R. Scott. A former U.S. Marine-turned-pastor and NFLer, respectively, these two men give a fresh and human look at managing money, education and even taxes. Prepare yourself for the football and understand that this book is from an American perspective and nothing can hold you back.
Teeming with invaluable wisdom and inspiration, The Winning Playbook is a guiding light for individuals aspiring to succeed across various domains. The authors, Rob Welsh and Johnathan R. Scott draw upon their extensive experiences as accomplished entrepreneurs and esteemed business leaders, enriching the readers with profound insights that transcend industry boundaries, making them universally applicable.
One of the pivotal themes resonating throughout the book is the power of a positive mindset and a resolute winning attitude in the pursuit of success. The authors skillfully elucidate that true success stems not solely from innate talents or abundant resources but rather from the unwavering fortitude and adept handling of challenges encountered along the journey. Welsh and Scott generously furnish numerous case studies and compelling anecdotes to support their claims, cementing the importance of a winning mindset in achieving remarkable outcomes.
An aspect that particularly caught my attention was the authors' inclusion of actionable advice and practical steps designed to facilitate immediate implementation. Emphasizing pivotal aspects such as the significance of goal-setting, honing communication skills, and fostering mutually beneficial relationships with peers and mentors, The Winning Playbook becomes an indispensable manual, equipping readers with an arsenal of tools and exercises that amplify the concepts presented.

I must admit, this book took me by surprise with its unique blend of sports strategy and life coaching. It combines entertainment and education effortlessly, making for an enjoyable and enlightening read. The authors skillfully relate sports concepts to real-life experiences that resonate with readers, such as discipline, teamwork, and leadership. Their approach is remarkably accurate.
Despite not being the biggest sports enthusiast, what truly impressed me was how effortlessly the book drew me in. Each chapter felt like a new play in their playbook, focusing on different strategies like resilience, goal-setting, and effective team management. It felt akin to having a personal coach's playbook specifically tailored for life. This innovative approach adds tremendous value to the book, making it a resource for sports enthusiasts and a life tool for anyone seeking to navigate their personal and professional paths more effectively. The Winning Playbook is a must-have resource for anyone who wants to take charge of their financial future and achieve long-term success. Welsh and Scott bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, particularly in coaching athletes to make their money work for them. However, the book's value extends beyond athletes, as it offers practical advice that can be applied by individuals from all walks of life.
One of the book's strengths is its ability to break down complex financial concepts and strategies into easily understandable terms. Welsh and Scott provide clear explanations and practical examples, ensuring that readers can grasp the principles and implement them in their own lives. From understanding the basics of a paycheck to leveraging hidden tax and financial strategies, the authors cover a wide range of topics, leaving no stone unturned when it comes to financial literacy.

The authors highlight the need to think like an entrepreneur, whether you're a professional athlete, an aspiring business owner, or simply someone looking to build wealth. This mindset shift helps readers approach their finances strategically and make informed decisions that align with their long-term goals. One minor drawback of The Winning Playbook is its heavy focus on sports-related examples and anecdotes. While these stories can be inspiring and relatable for athletes, individuals from other professions may find it harder to connect with the material on a personal level. However, the underlying principles and strategies presented in the book remain applicable to anyone seeking financial empowerment and personal growth.

"To develop a stellar business mindset, you must be a lifelong learner."
BLURB: We hear so many stories of athletes who have been taken advantage of or who simply didn't have a purpose after their careers came to an end. This doesn't have to happen. Learn how money and taxes work. Learn how to keep more of your hard-earned money and put it to work for you so that you never have to worry about money again. Learn what to look for in a financial and business team. Turn your career into your money-making machine, and become the CEO of your enterprise and legacy. Find your purpose beyond the ball and prepare for a life afterward that is rewarding and makes a difference. In addition, parents will learn how to select an agent and what specific questions to ask, taking the confusion out of the process.
My thoughts: Aside from my financial training I have done as a banker, this was my first financial guide book I've ever read, and because it had to do with professional athletes and everyone involving them, it was a pretty interesting, educational read. I love the NFL so it was extremely interesting to learn about and put into perspective the reality of the situation of their financials... we all think that NFL players have it made with million dollar contracts, but so much of that is not theirs to keep, and their career only lasts so long, so it's important that they look to the future, after the stardom is over, I think the authors really brought this out and shared very fantastic first hand knowledge and experiences to help everyone in the professional sports enterprise as well as just us normal physically uncoordinated people!! Thanks @katieandbreypa and the authors for sharing this with me!

Aspiring athletes face a brief window of opportunity to make their fortune, which presents several challenges.
