This is an educational book. My basketball IQ and coaching confidence made massive improvements as I read. As a basketball novice, this was right on my level. I would highly recommend this to any aspiring coaches.
I grew up playing basketball and have coached once before, but wanted something easy to pick up for a youth team I coached this year. This guide is excellent, and really the only book you will need if you are coaching below the high school level and just focused on the basics. Very good, succinct, and will improve your team and players. Highly recommend this one, if you need to coach, get it.
I've been reading this off and on for a few months. There is some good information about coaching that I found helpful, but not enough easy offensive plays to run with 5th graders. The offensive plays described in the book are quite complex and the one I did try to use with my team really fell flat.
Although I played basketball for years, it's easy to forget some of the basic rules and tips to teach to children so this will be a good reference to have as I move forward though.
Nice description of skills and a wealth of drills with various stages of difficulty to practice them. These drills will probably be good for "IDEA" work between mini-games from ASEP book. The explanation of how to position oneself on offense and defense is very good (detailed and clear).
