I sadly did not enjoy this. The writing was completely fine and I might pick up other books by the author. This one was just way too short and needed more detail and depth. I believe it's impossible to fully & properly develop a story like this in less than 200 pages. The premise was so good and Elena as a character was fine, but Katherine and thee romance were definitely lacking. Katherine was so two-dimensional and just boring. The romance didn't make any sense either. They had no chemistry and they were in love after knowing each other for like 3 days? Hard to believe. I did still finish it because I wanted to see how it all end...it wasn't worth it.
A fun short simple premise. An assassin who falls for her target? Love that. Just suspend your belief, don't think too much kind of fun. I'd love for a silly thriller sapphic movie adaptation like that. Enjoyed it overall. Had a fun and interesting main character to root for. Love interest was alright, but leaning towards ~eh~ for her character. This is a novella so it's understandable, I guess. Casual, quick paced type of writing I appreciated. But it could do with more time in the editing. All in all, I'll definitely be checking Margaux Fox's other works.
3 stars. I loved the plot of this. A female assassin falls in love with her intended target. Yes, please. I need more books with this plot immediately. It’s just the execution of it wasn’t the greatest. The writing wasn’t the strongest and this needed to be edited. It almost read like a rough draft. I liked the main character, Elena and found her to be interesting in how she went about things. Her and Katherine’s romance didn’t come fully together for me but I think that’s because Katherine was so one dimensional. This was still a really fun read and I enjoyed it enough that I would check out other works by this author.
Was this book great? Honestly, not really. But I had so much fun reading it that I wasn't particularly bothered by any mistakes or the silliness of the plot. Sometimes you watch a silly action movie just because you're in a mood for some relaxing, brainless fun. When I reached for this book all I expected was some entertainment and it certainly delivered.
I don't know what this says about me but lately I’ve been in the mood for murdery MCs in my romance. An assassin who falls for her target? I was intrigued. The writing wasn’t really my thing—all tell, no show, predictable plot beats—but I was invested in what would befall Elena and whether Katherine could escape her vile ex-husband’s hit on her. I just wish the actual romance had been more developed. I didn’t really understand why Elena changed her mind so quickly about killing Katherine, nor how fast their sexual relationship began or why they had feelings for each other. It was pretty one note. The other mark against this was the inclusion of chapters from the rival assassin hunting them down. I HATE villain POVs; your mileage may vary.
Characters: Elena is a white Russian assassin; she identifies as sexually fluid and tends to prefer women. She has a Japanese Akita named Kit. Katherine is a 50 year old white marketing firm CEO and mother of college student Daniel. No sexuality given for Katherine. There is an age gap per the blurb but Elena’s age wasn’t given. This is set in France and London.
Content notes: Elena is hired to kill Katherine (hit taken out by Katherine’s ex-husband), past intimate partner violence (physical, emotional, fatshaming; met when she was 17 and he was almost 30), past weight loss due to ex-husband’s fatshaming, victim-blaming TV host (countered), past divorce, villain stabs Elena’s pet dog (Kit is okay), murder, attempted murder, knife wound, blood, past murder of Elena’s mother, cocaine overdose (victim), epilogue shows MCs are now foster parents and have adopted some of their charges, on page sex, masturbation, alcohol, gender essentialist language, ableist language, mention of past miscarriage, mention of Elena’s mother being abandoned as a baby and raised in orphanage (eventually picked to train as an assassin)
Elena grow up as a Russian assassin. Her mom was the best and tough her everything she knows. Killing was her job, if they where bad people she had no problem with that. Katherine was the job but Elena just could understand why she was not a bad person. Her ex was the bad person and next in line to become the British Prime Minister. Elena fell in love with Katherine and decided to keep her safe. A quick love story. Nicely written.
Margaux knocked this one out of the park. I love a good action thriller and this one has everything I like!! I read it in a few hours! Did not want to put it down! Loved El and Katherine. Could not help but root for them!! Totally recommend this book!!
Jae's SRC coming out later in life age gap romance character rocks a power suit road trip (in the get away from assassin type of way) bisexual or pansexual character set in country you don't live (France/England)
This was a super enjoyable sapphic novella that felt very Killing Eve-esque, in a very good way! I love Margaux Fox's writing and this was no exception - it's just your standard sapphic romance novel but add in a hot older woman taking down a corrupt man who was also her abuser, and a hot assassin dealing with the moral side of her job and who also owns the cutest dog ever! I did have a couple of wee issues with the dialogue feeling a bit strange and stilted every so often, but still a very fun, quick read!
Katherine had been married to a man who might be the next Prime Minister of Great Britain. He was a narcissist and a sadistic monster. With her son safely at University she begins writing the story of her abusive husband. Elena is a professional assassin and has been hired to kill Katherine but the more she learns, the more she knows that she cannot do it. A passionate story of love on the run. Great author.
This is an awesome, totally engrossing story of deep love in an unexpected place. The main characters leap off the page! The plot is unrelenting and just keeps surging forward. The secondary characters are well developed too and really add to the story. I loved it.
Elena is a higher assassin and her assignment is to kill Catherine the wife of a powerful executive. I found the plot very interesting as there were many twist in terms as Elena changed from wanting to kill Catherine to protecting her. I recommend this book for all who like a romantic thriller.
I couldn’t put this book down once I started it, before I knew it I was halfway done. Knowing how it would probably turn out but not knowing the journey kept me turning the pages. I was not wrong, great ending.
I enjoyed the book but found it far too short for the complex story. The storyline was good but the pace of the book was way off. The second half galloped to the end. Another hundred pages developing the plot would have made it a far better book.
I really enjoy the concept of female assassins and this book is great with just the right amount of sizzle. This is the first book I have read by Margaux and now looking forward to each one I find.
Katherine was targeted for death, her reputation saved her. It shows how important a good reputation is worth. Loved this story. Needed some editing, but it was read in one sitting. Recommended
There was so much goodness in this book. Margaux Fox is becoming master at assassin’s, and bodyguards romance. This story had a lot of content and it’s characters were exciting. Elena and Katherine are the latest hot couple. The storytelling pulled you in with the excitement and adventure that was going down. This is a must read!
I know the author didn’t write this with Villanelle from Killing Eve in mind, but that was who I envisioned when I read this book. Anyway, I love Villanelle so naturally I also loved El. If you’re into female assassins, and I can’t imagine you’re not, you will love this book.
An unexpected mix of grill & thrill...suspense & sex all mix into one gotta love that girl in girl action...quick & to the point reading I enjoyed but don't mind slowing some of the risque parts down to explore fantasy more...but look fwd to read another...Fox production...
Fast paced and well written, this book is the tale of an assassin who falls in love with the target. Elena, the competent assassin, begins to question why Katherine is a target. As the story progresses, Elena questions her chosen profession as she realizes feelings for the target. Plenty of heat and assassin action. Definitely recommend.
Wow another amazing storyline I loved the storyline it had everything you want in a book i loved the main characters reading about their journey through the obstacle that stand in their way brilliant twists and turns a must read congratulations.
The characters in this storyline are strong and compassion. Complicate it with villains that keep you on your toes. It’s action packed and a page turner…
This was a terrific afternoon read. I very much enjoyed the characters - the smart stealthiness of Elena and the classiness of Katherine. I enjoyed watching and anticipating how Elena would work out the challenges she faced, both her original assignment, and her ultimate goal.
