The Magic Tree House series have taken on disturbing dimensions lately as Jack and Annie are this time transported to Baghdad of the ninth century. In the introduction, Ms. Osborne has laid claim to have visited Baghdad awhile back to have tea with a nice gentleman in a Bedouin tent and plans to revisit someday. Sure. Right. Enjoy such deluxe accommodations as bedbugs, sheep-kabobs, and fine entertainment from well-known artists like Ali-Ben Folds Five and rap artist Jinbad The Jailor (relaxing music of vengeance and retribution will totally inspire you!). Our staff of beautifully endowed servant girls will attend your every need (if you have a husband, that means ALL of them!). Fun activities include dunes for the kids to play in (the scorpions are very playful!) and wonderful religious people from the Al-Qaeda Church of the Jihad, so please, by all means, hang with us in Sunny Baghdad...no, seriously, you will HANG with us in Sunni Baghdad! Anyway, our intrepid heroes must travel the desert sands with a mysterious man named Mamoon (don't laugh!) and deliver a treasure with their lives...a copy of the writings of Aristotle. (WHAAAT!!!) What worse way of saving mankind than protecting Aristotle, who I find most misinformed in every aspect. If your children wish to advent to beautiful Saudi Arabia, please allow them to sample Ali Baba or something which makes better entertainment, or...find yourself between Iraq...and a Hard Place!

This book was amazing ! It was about a boy and girl named Jack and Annie. Jack and Annie woke up and got dressed so they can go to the frog creek woods to have an adventure in the magic tree house. They found the magic tree house and climbed in. They both found a book on the wooden floor and it had a village on it. They wished they could be there. They tree house spun and spun and they landed on a tree. They looked at the little village and went inside. They found a man and they said hi. The villagers let them inside a big house, and then they had a table full of food. They were eating until their bellies where full, then the played tug of war with the little and big kids. Then, a large gust of wind came. Everyone stopped eating and ran inside their homes. It was a sandstorm! There was a huge wind of sand coming their way. They both went inside a villagers home and stood there until the sand storm stopped. They both went into the magic tree house, them went home. THE END

We listened to these on our recent trip and I'm delighted to say that the kids were not really interested in them. I brought them as our "back-up" books, meaning, if I couldn't get them to listen to any of the *better* books, at least I'd have these. Much to my chagrin, and then delight, I found that they are not as interested in them as they used to be. Mary Pope Osborne is good at giving historical information concealed within a story, but her stories and writing just aren't strong enough to captivate. Too bad. Maybe history doesn't have to be hidden after all.

I started Season of the Sandstorms Tuesday. So far, Jack and Annie went to Baghdad in the Magic Tree House. The read a rhyme and caused a sandstorm. A man and some camels appeared to help Jack and Annie. Bandits attacked the travelers and then a sandstorm nearly blew away the mysterious book Mamoon asked Jack and Annie to guard. Jack and Annie could not find Mamoon after the storm so they traveled to Baghdad by themselves looking for the caliph.
