In the Garden with Flori is a truly beautiful and detailed picture book for children about supporting family and acting responsible. This was a simple but lovely story about a girl whose grandfather has an accident, and she volunteers to step in and care for his beloved garden and plants until he goes home. Flori is her dog and causes some chaos in the book. I loved the way her grandfather dealt with it - you could tell he was sad and disappointed, yet he accepted there was nothing to be done about it and that it could be fixed. This is a great book for children to teach them about responsibility and supporting others in tine of need.
This is gorgeous! The artwork is stunning. The story is gentle and sweet. When I first saw it, I thought it might be a book from decades past because of the illustrations but because it has that "old-fashioned" picture book feel not only in illustration style where a story is allowed to meander amicably. I love how eager the little girl is to help her grandfather with his greenhouse garden while he is recovering from a foot injury (note: children sensitive to hospitals or ailing grandparents may be bothered by the scene of grandfather in the hospital, though it is very low-key and it is clear he only has a temporary injury). It feels authentic that she first deals with a mistake (albeit not entirely her fault) by covering it up then by owning the truth. Her young artist friend is adorable and I love her comment about art: "you can paint anything just the way you want to, and its not fibbing at all!" Oh, and Flori, the little dog, is utterly adorable! The way the grandfather accepts what happened at the garden is dealt with in a realistic way that shows his good heart but also that he is disappointed and sad about it. Yet, it becomes a learning experience. My one quibble is that I'm not sure how relatable it is for young readers today given that it does feel a bit like something from yesteryear (though I believe supposed to be contemporary) especially given amount of freedom the little girl has, riding her bike alone (well, with her very small dog) to Grandfather's greenhouse, working there with no adult supervision and she seems rather young for that (as evidenced by the fact she is oblivious to the trouble her dog is getting into). But, perhaps this is a cultural thing as this was originally published in Switzerland. Still, overall it is charming and I would look for more work by this talented German artist/illustrator. I hope more translations of her work will become available for English audiences.
Thank you, North South Books Inc., for the advance reading copy.
This storybook just blew my mind regarding the pages filled with amazing, life like illustrations and the characters.
The story itself is so beautiful and heartwarming. It talks about a family teaching kids to be responsible when the family is facing difficult times. It focuses more on care and patience towards kids which I really appreciate.
You will be amazed how this little book brings you so much comfort and joy. I love the grandfather's plants too!
This book has such beautiful illustrations! I absolutely adored each and every page, there was so much to look at. I thought Linn, Flori and Emi were so sweet, and loved all the pictures they painted of the garden, and of course Emi's picture of Flori! The artwork for this book reminded me of some of the old books I used to read at my grandparents when I was little, and I think what made it more special is the fact that I used to help my grandparents garden as well. That really connected with me, and I think this would be a really lovely story for folks to gift and read with their grandchildren. I also think this is a great book for people with dogs who like to dig haha.
My second impression…the story is sweet with lessons abounding.
When Linn’s grandfather breaks his leg, he needs help caring for his garden. Of course, Linn volunteers to take this task and to take it seriously for him. She has helped him many times and loves the garden. She has also learned so much about plants during those special moments with her grandfather.
When she heads out to shoulder the tasks that her grandfather has entrusted to her, she takes her dog, Flori. All seems to be going well in the beginning, but Flori has time to investigate, causing a bit of damage, unbeknownst to Linn, until …. Well, Linn has to figure out how to handle the disaster that has been caused by Flori, while at the same time, accepting the responsibility herself. She cannot place blame on a dog! She also faces doubts about herself that arise out of this situation.
This sweet story is for the reading and enjoyment with lots of lessons, hopefully to learn!
Sonja Danowski’s illustrations are absolutely devine. She paints with such fine detail that I feel as though I am standing right there in the garden with Linn and her friend, Emi and Flori too. The watercolors pop right off the page in amazing beauty.

In The Garden With Flori (Flori is a dog) is a stunningly illustrated children's picture book, but one that I very much enjoyed reading as an adult. The German artist has other children's books which I am happy to discover as her artwork is exquisite.
But the story also holds its on against the illustrations and has many loving messages to impart. Recently I took a trip and enlisted a couple of young children to water my plants for me to earn some pocket money. My father taught me a love of nature, and nourishing a plant is often our first introduction to taking care of a living thing. Linn helps her injured Grandfather by watering the plants in the greenhouse. Along the way the reader learns a few key gardening facts. An invasion of snails attacks the plants, and Linn must come to terms with admitting this failure to her Grandfather. In the end she sees that no one blames her for this occurrence, and telling the truth is the best course.
Now if I could just find out where to buy a goose necked watering can, as illustrated on the front of the book! The author could probably make a fortune if she decided to turn these into reality!
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for allowing me to read this charming book in exchange for an honest review.
When Linn's grandpa ends up in the hospital with a broken foot, Linn offers to take care of his garden for him. Granpa's garden is in a greenhouse, so Linn gets to work watering, and Flori, her dog, gets to work digging, eventually digging himself out of the greenhouse. It rained that night, and by morning when Linn got to the greenhouse, there were snails everywhere! They had come in though the hole Flori dug and have munched on everything! Taking a picture for grandpa is now awkward - he's not going to like that the snails had a visit. Linn needs to think of something fast.
Oh the beautiful illustrations! Linn's families clothes were so colorful, like patchwork quilts or harlequins. And the message of the story, being responsible and taking responsibility were great. I love the way grandpa reacted when he saw the damage the snails had done. It was also very interesting to read about the common snails in the "snail book".
In The Garden With Flori is a charming book about family and nature. When Grandpa ends up in the hospital, Linn volunteers to look after the garden. Things are going well until Flori, the family dog, digs a hole and lets in snails that wreak havoc on the plants. Linn learns a lesson and with help from Grandpa regrows the garden. The interconnection between family and nature is lovely. Readers will enjoy Flori's mischievous ways while learning about gardening. The illustrations are beautiful and colorful throughout this tale of growth and new beginnings. Readers of all ages will enjoy this story especially if they read with family.
Special thanks to Netgalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Wow, this children's book has amazing, beautiful graphics, which are just so stunning. A lot of work has gone into them. The story is really beautiful too. Linn has to help her grandfather with his garden, after he goes into hospital with a broken leg. She has a dog called Flori, who goes with her to the garden, and while he is there, he makes a mess which brings a big problem to the plants and flowers in the greenhouse. Linn has to work hard to fix the problem, and she has to build up confidence to tell her grandfather what has happened. This is a wonderful book, which teaches a lot about the plants and insects that live in the garden. I highly recommend it.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I felt it a disappointment so much effort had been put into illustrating a book that just felt so dry. A decent girl wants to do the right thing and keep her grandfather's greenhouse and gardens spick and span and watered while he's in hospital for a spell, only for things to go badly wrong. Do I blame the translation for the stilted style, and the complete lack of necessary oomph when the 'twist ending' flops into view? I don't know. What I do know is the work on the visuals demanded much better accompaniment.
As a gardener, I have had the experience of waking up one morning and my beautiful crop being infested with an insect who appeared from nowhere. I loved this book and the idea of that experience through a child’s perspective.
It can happen to any of us, and of course the grandfather was loving and understanding, giving it an ending I loved.
Definitely recommend this one for all the curious children in our lives.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
A beautiful illustrated book for younger children in the love of gardening. Granddaughter and Grandfather share this love. It is a very tender book. Grandpa has been in the hospital and he is coming back home. Linn the granddaughter gave the gift of flowered paintings for her grandfather to enjoy while he was in the hospital.
A great book for grandparents and grandchildren to share together!
A special thank you to North South Books and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
The loveliest illustrations I have ever seen are found inside of In the Garden with Flori by Sonja Danowski. After having read the story my granddaughter and I looked back through the digital copy several more times, discovering more details and simply enjoying the beauty of each page. I must say it tickled me when my granddaughter commented on how much she liked Linn’s clothes. I had thought her clothes were a bit eccentric. However, Linn and my granddaughter must be kindred spirits when it comes to dress.
Linn’s and Flori’s story is perfect for the seven year old reading it with me. The grandfather breaking his leg was serious, Linn wanting to help was exactly what should be done and the problem that followed was big in my granddaughter’s eyes. We both liked that Linn sought solutions instead of abandoning the garden. She showed real responsibility. Also we liked how her mother and grandfather handled the situation too. Then of course, we loved Flori and good friend, Emi.
A book that will make you want to get outside and grow something so share it with a little one today. Reading it together is part of the fun but a second grader should be able to read it independently.
4.5 Stars The publisher through Net Galley provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.
In The Garden With Flori is a story with so much heart. You'll follow a young girl and her dog as they tend her grandmas garden. With beautiful illustrations and a focus on tending and nurturing all living things this book is a must read for any young nature lover. It will teach children to find awe in everyday moments and the importance of honoring friendship and family.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this early in exchange for an honest review.
Wow!! What a stunning book. The illustrations are just breathtaking. I love the sweet relationship it depicts between the little girl and her grandfather; how young readers can learn so much about gardening; and the way this book addresses complicated topics like artistic license, honesty, guilt, and turning something bad around to find the good. Can't wait to share this one with my own little gardener!
I received an advanced copy via Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This is a lovely story about a girl who promises to take care of her grandfather's garden until he comes back home due to an accident. The story itself is heartwarming and teaches kiddos about responsibility.
Illustrated like Marcel Marlier's Martine, this book surely brought me back to my childhood. Setting in countryside, we learn that Linn tends to her Grandpa's garden and learns so much by doing it. We, too, by reading this book. A simple yet meaningful story, with beautiful illustrations, this is one to enjoy with the whole family.
"In the Garden with Fiori" is an adorable story about a little girl and her dog trying to look after her hospitalised grandfather's garden. The story is helpful for the young minds to learn about nature and responsibility in the form of gardening. The illustrations were marvelously detailed with soothing colours colours and vintage vibe. A nice addition to the bookshelf.
This is a beautiful book, perfect for young readers with a love for nature and animals. The illustrations are full of warmth and realism, and the story is easy to read. I can imagine kids finding new details among the plants in the garden every time they look at the pictures.
A book with beautiful and detailed illustrations and a heart warming story which tells us of a granddaughter's promise to look after her Grandfather's garden while he is in hospital.
Many thanks to the Publisher, the Author and NetGalley for an advance copy in return for my honest review.
This book is beautiful, but the images are a little too realistic for my taste (I'm kind of freaked out), and the story drags a little bit. This is a nice coffee table book, honestly. Or just a nice book to have somewhere on display in your space. This doesn't strike me as a bedtime read.
Beautiful illustrations using a calming, muted color palate help tell the story of what happens when Linn cares for Grandpa's greenhouse while he's in the hospital.
I really like the clown like prints and patterns that’s the People wear.
The illustrations are very interesting - like the details of the glass in the greenhouse and the glass of the door in their house and a lot of extra information about snails and plants.
It is an educational book.
Sweet lupins make the soil more fertile
Common garden snail - most are right coiled, but some coil in the opposite direction - in German these unique individuals are called schneckenkönige or snail kings.

I LOVE garden books and In the Garden with Flori does not disappoint! Beautiful, detailed illustrations show life in the garden and the disaster that occurs. I like the three generations of family included in this story about gardening, nature, family, responsibility, friendship, and creative problem solving. Gorgeous!
