Qui sait, ce voyage sans retour le réconciliera peut-être avec son destin.
Romancier anglais (1909-1957), Malcolm Lowry est l’auteur du chef-d’œuvre Sous le volcan, en partie autobiographique, et de romans et poèmes.

About the author

Malcolm Lowry was a British novelist and poet whose masterpiece Under the Volcano is widely hailed as one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century. Born near Liverpool, England, Lowry grew up in a prominent, wealthy family and chafed under the expectations placed upon him by parents and boarding school. He wrote passionately on the themes of exile and despair, and his own wanderlust and erratic lifestyle made him an icon to later generations of writers.

Lowry died in a rented cottage in the village of Ripe, Sussex, where he was living with wife Margerie after having returned to England in the summer of 1955, ill and impoverished. The coroner's verdict was death by misadventure, and the causes of death given as inhalation of stomach contents, barbiturate poisoning, and excessive consumption of alcohol.

It has been suggested that his death was a suicide. Inconsistencies in the accounts given by his wife at various times about what happened at the night of his death have also given rise to suspicions of murder.

Lowry is buried in the churchyard of St John the Baptist in Ripe. Lowry reputedly wrote his own epitaph: "Here lies Malcolm Lowry, late of the Bowery, whose prose was flowery, and often glowery. He lived nightly, and drank daily, and died playing the ukulele," but the epitaph does not appear on his gravestone

Το Ταξίδι στη Λευκή Θάλασσα αποτελεί ένα αυτοβιογραφικό μυθιστόρημα του Malcolm Lowry κ κατά τη γνώμη μου λειτουργεί ως προάγγελος του μεγάλου του αριστουργήματος, Κάτω από το Ηφαίστειο.

Πρόκειται για το θρυλικό χαμένο χειρόγραφο που διασώθηκε από την πρώτη σύζυγό του κ εκδόθηκε μετά τον θάνατό του. Μέσα στις σελίδες του αποτυπώνεται η βαθιά αποξένωση του ανθρώπου, αλλά κ η ανάδυση των πιο σκοτεινών πλευρών του. Παράλληλα, παρουσιάζεται ο μεταπολεμικός κόσμος κ η ανάγκη χάραξης μιας νέας πορείας, με καινούργια ιδανικά κ οράματα που γεννιούνται μέσα από τις στάχτες του φρικτού πολέμου.
Είναι ένα βιβλίο γεμάτο λυρισμό, εικόνες, στοχασμούς κ έντονη εσωτερικότητα. Η διαμόρφωση της συνείδησης μέσα από τη δυστυχία, η φωνή και τα ανεκπλήρωτα όνειρα μιας ολόκληρης γενιάς διαπερνούν το έργο.

Η «Λευκή Θάλασσα» μοιάζει με κάτι μακρινό,σιωπηλό, παγωμένο και ταυτόχρονα καθάριο, ένα κάλεσμα να δώσει σχήμα και μορφή στο μέλλον.
Οι πολλές υποσημειώσεις ενδέχεται να κάνουν το κείμενο απαιτητικό στην ανάγνωση, ωστόσο κρίνονται απαραίτητες. Ξεπερνώντας αυτό το μικρό εμπόδιο, ο αναγνώστης θα απολαύσει ένα βαθιά διερευνητικό και φιλοσοφημένο λογοτέχνημα.

Αξίζει επίσης να ληφθεί υπόψη ότι το βιβλίο δεν αποτελεί την τελική μορφή που επιθυμούσε ο συγγραφέας, καθώς το πρωτότυπο καταστράφηκε στη φωτιά του σπιτιού του το 1944. Η έκδοση που έχουμε σήμερα βασίζεται σε μία από τις πρώτες εκδοχές του έργου και έχει υποστεί σημαντική επεξεργασία από επιμελητές.

Lowry's unfinished last attempt at writing, is the only indication of how he wished to create something called the voyage that never ends.

Suddenly creating an Almanac of references, this is how Lowry would meet and visit the wide worlds of other literature.

This is the (approximately 1936-37) version of the book that was lost in a fire in 1944 in Dollarton. In that sense, it is truly the stuff of legend.
