The self-help industry has grown over the years at a fevered pace and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. The major problem with this movement is that change is only temporary without God’s grace and the gospel of his Son. Karl Clauson addresses this dilemma in his recent book, The 7 Resolutions: Where Self-Help Ends and God’s Power Begins.

Clauson rightly argues, “Self-help” is a threat to God’s children. The temptation to fight our battles in our strength and not with Holy Spirit power dates back to the Fall.” The commitment to depending on the triune God and the power of the gospel is at the very center of Clauson’s appeal in this book.

The author urges his readers to make a series of resolutions which include:

Join God

Think Truth

Kill Sin

Choose Friends

Take Risks

Focus Effort

Redeem Time

Each resolution is carefully unpacked with biblical fidelity and winsomeness. Clauson is a master storyteller and utilizes his gift with appropriate personal illustrations throughout the book.

The ultimate aim of Christ-centered transformation is seen throughout as Clauson pleads his case. New Christians will likely benefit the most from the approach in The 7 Resolutions but seasoned followers of Christ will benefit from the timeless wisdom in this timely book.

A great and practical book on putting God first. Instead of condemning self-help, the author adds depth and meaning by introducing seven areas and places of application that center on God, rather than self.

Occasionally, you find a book that changes your way of thinking. The 7 Resolutions, by Karl Clauson, has changed my thinking process in a whole new way! It holds a powerful lens, allowing me to see things more clearly. One statement in the introduction made a huge impact:

Self-help, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is “The action or process of bettering oneself or overcoming one’s problems without the aid of others.”

Karl’s heart is evident. He’s candid when admitting of his failures while living a destructive lifestyle. And he’s inspiring when showing how change is truly possible.

These 7 resolutions: Join God, Think Truth, Kill Sin, Choose Friends, Take Risks, Focus Effort, and Redeem Time can cause transformation! God is up to the challenge to change your life.

If you are ready to create new habits that will transform your life so that you can serve God better, Karl Clauson recommends resolving to do seven things--join God, think truth, kill sin, choose friends, take risks, focus effort and redeem time--in his book, "The 7 Resolutions".

Clauson teaches the concepts of each resolution and ending each chapter with a summary of how to apply what you have learned. My favorite chapter was "Focus Effort" which goes against the grain of setting goals as exemplified by others. Instead of setting goals, which are often out of reach leading to condemnation, Clauson suggests that we focus our effort into doing what God has called us to do and maintaining that commitment. The idea of not setting goals is foreign to most of us as this is often recommended as a first step towards success. Changing the paradigm might be difficult but focusing on the consistency in doing the right things makes a lot of sense.

I recommend "The 7 Resolutions". It's concise, easy to follow application steps will help you make wise decisions based on godly advice.

An interesting proposition, writing a self-help book but advocating for the end of self-help books. Good content and a consistent message to follow God's mission for you. I really liked how the author didn't advocate for any specific area to specialize in your life, but to recognize God's hand and direction for each individual.

I marked it down as there are 50+ steps advocated by the author and if you are focusing on so many areas, you really are not focusing on anything. There are 7 main resolutions and multiple sub-steps and sub-sub-steps in each area. All have some value and I believe this book would be better utilized if a reader would focus on one or two areas. Overall very good examples throughout.

This is a 2.5⭐️ read but since the last 30 minutes of the book was the best part, I rounded it to 3 ⭐️. This is not a terrible book, however it does not stand out with giving a new way to apply the same concepts that are already circulating in other resources. I was able yo highlight 3 things that encouraged me, but this work was not engaging.

This is not a book to breeze through. Taking the time to thoughtfully apply these seven strategies has revolutionized my approach to walking with God. If you are looking to see things from a new perspective, this is the book for you.

This is a good solid set of actions that can be used to develop a deeper walk with God. I found the introductory part a little confusing and hard to follow, but the 7 resolutions were supported by scripture.

Not for everyone, but a good resource where it is needed.
