A Thousand Fiendish Angels is a collection of 3 short stories bound together by a book of human skin. Inspired by Dante's Inferno.
I'm passionate about writing and I love reading. My favorite authors include James Rollins, Jonathan Maberry, John Connolly, Daniel Silva, and I also read a lot of travel books.
Every time I read another of the ARKANE series, I end up thinking "Oh, JF Penn can't possibly top this one"...and then she does precisely that! I remember reading the preceding book, End of Days, in a couple of sittings, and while reading Valley of Dry Bones, I almost missed my bus stop on two occasions because I was so engrossed. For me, it's the most interesting of the series, mixing Louisiana Voodoo, Catholicism, relics, bones, and all other dark things. I'd also love to see New Orleans so reading the book felt like I was actually there. It's good to see Morgan and Jake back together and yet again, Penn doesn't hesitate to put the two of them through the wringer. I absolutely loved their latest adventure and can't wait to see what they get up to next.
Although this may be the 10th book in the series it can be read as a standalone. We are given enough background information to situate us without being overloaded with too much detail. Ms. Penn knows how to introduce her story with an expert penmanship and superb imagination.
This page-turning archaeological thriller explores at its fullest the two attributes the author is well-known to explore: the supernatural and occult. These two elements are blended into a religious mystery with an action adventure that is captivating from the start.
An ancient prophecy, an occult secret and the power to raise the dead is at the heart of this story. Voodoo symbols, secret society and a mystery that stretches to the Spanish Empire will have Jake Timber to New Orleans seeking for the Hand of Ezekiel but he will find out he is not the only one seeking the relics that can turn bones to living flesh. Morgan Sierra also plays a good role and with Jake they bring us on a fantastic journey that spans continents in their quest for the relics. Action driven, this story is very visual and also quite graphic not a dull moment throughout.
Ms. Penn does extensive research before she pens down a story and we see how her knowledge shines through her words once it comes to fruition. Once into her book you will be hooked.
The plot is superb and well executed, the narrative is rich and flows smoothly and finally the characterization is well- drawn and appealing.
This is another success, well-done Ms. Penn.
I received this ARC from the author for my honest and unbiased thoughts.
Morgan and Jake are back in pursuit of the Hand of Ezekiel. As usual in the ARKANE stories the reader is hooked during the first paragraph and the line is reeled in until that last page when you are deposited back in the boat of reality. Without providing any spoilers for an awesome story, Valley of Dry Bones may leave you in a love hate situation due to some unforeseen happenings as the story progresses. If you are a fan of Morgan & Jake this is a must read. If you are new to J. F. Penn’s ARKANE stories this story can stand alone but be advised it will whet your appetite for more. I received and advance review copy and chose to provide this review.
I give this five stars for being a very well~written, and obviously well researched book. I have not read many of the books in this series yet but that didn't really matter as it stands alone. It contains all the elements is a good action adventure, "good" guys, "bad" guys, something being sought that is not easy to find and that somebody doesn't want you to get before them. Throw in New Orleans, voodoo, and a secret society formed to protect relics, and you have everything you need for a great reading experience. I will not ruin the story for you. I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.
Wow!!! What a fantastic read!! I am probably one of this genres biggest fans and I am also one of those curious ones who actually do fact checking because of my love for stories about ancient rituals artifacts and religious objects. I will recommend that you try to read these wonderful books in sequence as the story of the main characters flow through them. I highly recommend this book by this great author if you want to lose yourself in the supernatural realm but want to actually believe that what is written can really happen. Great research and fantastic writing!!!
Valley Of Dry Bones by J.F. Penn in the 10th book in the ARKANE series. I was glad to see Morgan rejoin the usual characters in this mission. (I do love strong female protagonists.)
Jack Timber and the ARKANE team must find the Hand of Ezekiel before those who want to raise an army of the dead do so. To do this, Jack must undergo a voodoo death and find the five finger bones that are scattered about the old Spanish Empire outposts.
The author seamlessly incorporates facts about supernatural legions, voodoo practices, archeological sites, and diving into an exciting read. The ending was unexpected. If you like this supernatural thriller genre, I recommend you read Valley of the Dry Bones.
Zombies in the bible? What? Great Dark Arcane Thriller Adventure.
The story makes me think of the James Rollins type of adventure but with more thriller-type aspects and a slightly darker tone. There is an aurora of Dan Brown type about the story too.
Zombies in the bible? Hand of Ezekiel Such a cool arcane object with biblical connections. Love that aspect adding a bit of a tilt toward the SPOOKIER end of the scale. I mean think about it. What if it were true? Read the bible scripture. I did. Ezekiel 37 - Vally of Dry Bones. The thought gives me chills, BUT this a totally great Fictional story without any Author Opinion about this aspect at all. That was just My Own thinking.
It is well-written, action packed, fast paced, involving a dangerous ancient religious relic, believable adversaries that threaten the main characters and the world. Yes, there is more than one adversary each with their own passionate agendas.
We visit more than one location and one of my favorites to read about, New Orleans. This is the 10th book in the Arcane series but does well as a standalone read too. The characters are reoccurring so if you want to know more about their personal stories and history be sure to read all the books.
I volunteered to read an ARC of this book. This is my genuine opinion of it.
I received a free advance copy from J.F. Penn, for my honest review and I also pre-ordered it from amazon.com. Something I like to do to support my favorite authors and especially when I read advance copies from them.
No spoilers! Absolutely addictive, J.F. Penn's writing style just sucks you in, your right their in the action, on the edge of the seat cheering that Morgan, Jake, Martin and the rest of the Arkane crew to defeat evil and it's a read that you don't want to see end.
Her writing is so well researched, like all the historical sites she adds into the storyline, can she ever add all the right elements to make her story that much better and what an imagination she has.
With the Valley of Dry Bones, you have two intertwining storylines that beautifully meshes into one storyline, felt Penn told what could have been a complex story into a simply told imaginative read, overloaded with twist and turns, seasoned perfectly with suspense and so glad she didn't write Morgan Sierra out of the series.
Jake is Jake, Naomi's a great edition, but once Morgan gets into the storyline, she and Jake just click and just makes the storyline work perfectly.
I don't read a lot of books in the supernatural genre, but absolutely love how J.F. Penn mixes historical sites into her Arkane Series books, that alone makes it worth while to read, you always learn something new and highly recommend.
This one starts off strong, but gets a little bogged down in all of the museums and historical places. The action does pick up and is overall an enjoyable read.
JF Penn hit it out of the park again. This is probably my favorite ARKANE novel to date and there really hasn't been one that I didn't love. She is like Dan Brown but with better writing skills. This book is a fantastic journey that spans continents and the research that she does really shines through, I learned a lot about the Spanish Empire and it was a hair raising adventure that added just that little bit of the supernatural that makes these books special.
Wow! I absolutely loved this book. JF Penn is a fantastic writer. Her books are always well written and easy to read. The mix of history and fiction take you to places you might have visited and adds to the enjoyment of the story. The adventure of Jake Timber and Morgan Sierra in their quest for the relic called “Hand of Ezekiel” will keep you enthralled so that you’ll find it hard to put down. I only wish I was given the chance to rate this higher than five. I was given a review copy from the author but it in no way affected my comments above.
It starts in Guinea, Africa where people were captured to be slaves so long ago and where it is rumoured that voodoo (zombies and all) as it was known in the New World originated. Okay, enough of what I know of folklore. But it does inform the story to follow…
Again we have wonderful travels across the globe. My favourite is being in New Orleans – I just love that spooky city.
“An army of skeletons overran the last of the living.” Love this line – and it holds the essence of what Morgan and Jake have to fight in this latest adventure.
I enjoyed the tantalising bits of what had happened on previous adventures across the globe – and I seriously want to catch up on those! (I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the author, but this review is my own honest opinion.)
The antagonist in this story has a humanising aspect to him which makes one almost root for him. Almost.
I liked the blend of history, mythology, folklore and a hint of the supernatural in this thriller.
Valley of Dry Bones is truly a work of art, bordering on the supernatural, but not too much as to spoil a good adventure story, but enough to sometimes make you wonder if it could be true. The different countries and areas documented are well researched especially St Orleans in the USA, where voodoo is also bought into the equation, and very tastefully done. J F Penn does have the knack of putting all her travels into stories and although you can read these novels as stand-alone, the same characters do pop up. The characters are also well thought out brave bold but human too, so yes they do get some injuries, and like us normal humans that have had bones broken and skin burnt and the length of time it takes to heal. Definitely worth the 5* and I'm already looking forward to the next one.
One thing (amongst a lot of other positives) you can say about Joanna Penn is that she always researches her books really well. I can absolutely confirm this with regard to San Francisco. I felt I was back there with the sounds, the smells, the shops, and the people. Wonderfully worded too.
An exhausting ARKANE adventure that will have you zooming through the pages, as The Hand of Ezekiel needs to be found before evildoers get their hands on it (sorry!) and raise an army from the dead. Not only a great story, but a lesson in the history of New Orleans and Bayou voodoo, and the connection with Catholicism. Loved it.
I was given an eARC which I voluntarily read and honestly reviewed. All opinions are my own.
J. F. Penn did it again and wrote a fantastic novel which keeps you turning the pages to see what will happen next. It is great to see Jake and Morgan back in action along with Naomi. Ancient relics, bones,, and Voodoo mixed together make this book even more interesting. This book is great and I am sure you will enjoy it. Happy reading!!
Great book in the Arkane series. The Voodoo theme, the locations of Africa and New Orleans, the fast pace, and the Old Testament account of Ezekiel bringing an army of dry bones back to life is a different new adventure for Jake and Morgan. It is a must read for Joanna Penn fans. You won't want to put it down.
As always JF Penn has created a rich, detailed and fascinating world. I feel like I don’t need to travel when I read these books as the writer takes me there and infuses layers of history to create depth. Morgan was great but I need more Morgan fight scenes in the next novel and perhaps the next level in Morgan and Jake’s relationship 😉
I found this instalment of J.F. Penn’s fantastic ARKANE serious exceedingly interesting. We learn a lot about New Orleans Voodoo and its African roots, and particularly its relationship with Catholicism. As an African, living in Africa, witchcraft and our indigineous mythology has always held a special interest for me, and I’d love to see Ms Penn tackle that in more detail in a future episode.
I was also wrong in my last review, where I said you probably wouldn’t be able to go back and read a previous book in the series after you’d read this one. I no longer think that’s true, because this story describes those pivotal events of the last book perfectly well, in such a way that you don’t feel you missed anything. I think if you’d read this book, you could easily go back and read a previous instalment, on the understanding that those events hadn’t yet happened.
It’s something that I think is hard to get right—you could honestly read every book completely as a standalone, and/or you could read them in any order and quickly get a feel for the state of the story’s universe in each.
This one’s also got a longest afterword and Penn goes into great detail about her real-life adventures and all the nuggets of information and experiences that inspired her. It’s definitely the most well-researched of the ARKANE books, and the author’s love of travel is really evident.
Story-wise, it’s pretty basic and formulaic as far as thrillers go. ARKANE sends their agents gallivanting around the world to recover x number of MacGuffins. And then something happens, and suddenly there’s a time limit with potentially disastrous consequences for failure. With little deviation, that’s more-or-less the formula for these stories. But it works: it keeps the pace fast and the stakes high, and it really is like an adventure series on TV. In fact, the past few books have reminded me of the old Warehouse 13 TV series... only it’s a little more serious than that story was.
Valley of Dry Bones is perfect for a Halloween read and for zombie fanatics.
Jake is now on another mission in New Orleans with Naomi. A dead body has been discovered with symbolic signs drawn on the man's body. It lead to a search of the Hand of Ezekiel. While dodging two rivals, the Brotherhood of Breath and a shadowy billionaire, Jake called on his former partner, Morgan Sierra to aid him one last time.
Morgan Sierra had suffered a great blow in her last mission and is a shadow of herself trying to figure where does she go from here. It is also a time for Morgan to decide what her future will hold for her if she severed her ties to ARKANE.
I just love every books that J.F Penn writes. Not only it is a great thriller with all kind of supernatural, she writes in great details of the places that Jake and Morgan travels to and I love the author's notes at the end of each books. It is quite educational of the relics and artifacts in each story.
This time, I have thought the character, Morgan Sierra won't be in this story and will have to find out if she will ever return. It is a thrill of a ride of racing against time to stop the rising of the deads.
This series does not disappoint.
I was given this book by the author. I have decided to write an unbiased review for the book. I was not compensated or influenced in any way for writing this review.
Joanna Penn's 'Valley Of Dry Bones' is the tenth of the series, and retains her reputation of incredibly readable and exciting plots and language, with deep research and fantastic extrapolations to add paranormal and other ingredients, making her plots unique and reminding me of Rider Haggard, Dan Brown, and others of their ilk. Some earlier protagonists remain, some are absent, and new ones appear in 'Valley Of Dry Bones'. Jake Timber and his old partner Morgan Sierra set out to track down a set of bones which will complete a relic (The Hand of Ezekiel) which is reputed to have supernatural powers. But a billionaire is also seeking the same bones for his selfish ends, and will happily end their lives if needed. As usual, they need to face many deadly adventures to obtain the bones, and the good guys win in the end. Great book and great plot, but I saw some micro errors, hence only four stars. I thank the author for giving me a free advance copy of the book for a free and unbiased review.
The 10th in the ARKANE series of books, The Valley of Dry Bones continues the relentless pursuit of supernatural relics by Jake and Morgan, ARKANE agents. The author weaves a gripping story about biblical relics which take them all over the world, she elucidates beautifully the countries they visit, the people they meet and their relationship development. I am always encouraged to investigate the places she vividly brings to life in these books. I have visited New Orleans and Majorca and felt the descriptions were so vivid I also enjoy books that have an element of surprise in them, where the supernatural and the occult meet. It is a ‘start and you won’t put it down’ type of book, and if you have not read this author you are in for a treat as you have the whole series to catch up on!
I was fortunate that the author let me have a copy of the book pre launch (which you can guess I was very excited about) and this is absolutely my honest opinion
Another awesome book in the ARKANE series. Jake is paired up with a new partner, Naomi, in New Orleans while his regular partner, Morgan, is in Spain still recuperating from her last ordeal. A grave drops down into a previously unknown chamber during heavy rains in one of the old New Orleans cemeteries. This chamber of bones starts the search for the Hand of Ezekiel. A billionaire wants it to try to cure his daughter of a terrible bone disease and Jake needs to find it for ARKANE before anyone gets hurt in the search for immortality. The characters are interesting and well written along with a fantastic plot. I can't say enough good things about this book. It definitely kept me up reading!
Luis Rey, has a rare connective tissue disease. Muscles, tendons and ligaments turn to bone. A slow crippling agonizing death. His young daughter has inherited his disease. Luis Rey is a billionaire and will do anything to save his daughter. An ancient prophesy, from the Spanish inquisition, from the bones of the dead, a potion that will enable the dead to come to life is his only option to save his daughter. The army of the dead. Arkane agents Jake and Sierra Morgan are also looking for the finger bones to put an end to this evil prophecy. Does the prophecy, this potion really work? This is a magnificent, mesmerizing read! Non stop action, intrigue from the first to last page! My highest recommendation!
Not only do you get a great story with seriously strong characters who you will love be this the 1st book in the series you read or the latest but it's filled with fantastic descriptions that make you feel as if you are actually there. On the hunt for another relic that has potential to destroy the earth the lead characters have you gripped as they battle not only the bad guys but their own personal demons. The book is filled with tension, suspense, thrills & triumph. The book can be read as a stand alone but I can assure you once you've read one you'll want to read them all. I was hooked from the 1st page to the last spending may a late night lost in it's pages. Highly recommend to anyone who likes action, suspense, occult, great scene descriptions & dang good read.
It's been so long since the last ARKANE novel, but it was worth the wait. Tables are a bit turned in this one Jake is healthy and Morgan is healing. So Jake goes off on his own to New Orleans to view a crime scene, but he contacts Morgan on her holiday for some help. From there things speed off into fast paced world hopping adventure. The ARKANE novels are always filled with well written and interesting characters and this one is no different. I'm already looking forward to the next adventure.
Valley of Dry Bones: An ARKANE Thriller (ARKANE #10), my tenth read from author J.F. Penn. Captivating, with well-developed characters coupled with an outstanding suspense story-line with its intricately woven twists and turns. Penn, as always, does a good job with her character development; you can like and/or hate these characters. Narrator Veronica Giguere does a fine job of narration. I'll be reading more by this author as I get more of her books. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
And…... Yet another suspenseful story. Yes, Morgan is back but very reluctantly at first because of her injuries sustained in the previous story - yet she is drawn back to Jake with her adrenaline just pumping away from the excitement to be back on the job. New Orleans, Toledo and Majorca (Spain), San Francisco, are some of the places you can visit in this book.
I am lucky enough to have gotten a ARC copy of this book from the author. Great book wonderful adventure and you will learn some interesting things also. I also love how you can go to the author's Pinintrest and see the images she describes so well.
Great new read in the ARKANE series by J.F. Penn. Suspenseful and thrilling as all of her books are. And this is a standalone read, so you don't have to have read the previous books in the series, but trust me you will want to because they are exciting books to read.
