This fourteenth edition of TAKING SOCIAL ISSUES presents current controversial issues in a debate-style format designed to stimulate student interest and develop critical thinking skills. Each issue is thoughtfully framed with an issue summary, an issue introduction, and a postscript. An instructor’s manual with testing material is available for each volume. USING TAKING SIDES IN THE CLASSROOM is also an excellent instructor resource with practical suggestions on incorporating this effective approach in the classroom. Each TAKING SIDES reader features an annotated listing of selected World Wide Web sites and is supported by our student website, www.dushkin.com/online.
Another college book. This book was okay. Organized into pro/con essays about various social subjects, it's interesting to read the different views on the more common social issues facing America today.
Overall, I found the essays either didn't deal with the issues they claimed, or I simply didn't like the manner they did deal with them. (I understood what each author was saying, but I didn't always agree with their views on the issue they were trying to present) It would be like trying to talk about tax problems with someone; they want to discuss income tax while you want to talk about capital gains taxes. You're both talking about taxes, but you're not on the same level. So, if you're going to read this book, leave any pre-concieved notions about these issues at the door. Most of the issues delt with are not going to be the issue you may think it is, but some of them are very cut and dry. (gay marriage) Even so, it's not a book I would ever read again.
