I am a geek with a passion for God [I am a fulltime Presbyterian Pastor/Retired computer programmer.]

I'm an unrepentant technologist with over 25 years in the "Information Technology" field -much of it as a Senior Manager of Research and Development.

I have a wonderful wife named Lori, and two fantastic daughters... CJ and Jackie. CJ is ten years the elder and is in college (Muskingum University, New Concord Ohio).

All four of us love Science Fiction, Scuba Diving and good food. Lori and the girls share a passion for music and the piano - regrettably I have absolutely no skills in this area. I do have a passion for Notre Dame and Green Bay Packer Football.

About my writing...

My current passion is a pure Science Fiction series following the adventures of a future "Horatio Hornblower" style character called "Admiral Catherine Kimbridge". I have also co-authored a fantasy series with my eldest daughter (CJ) called "The Ways of Mages"

PLEASE NOTE: All of the proceeds from the first book in each series goes to funding food banks and homeless ministries... So enjoy an inexpensive read and know that you are helping someone else in the process!

This one is a must !!!

First book of Exodus Earth trilogy hocked me within the first chapter !
Survey Ship got it all, a full on science fiction.
Andrew Beery imagination truly amazed me, it’s like a mix of old Indiana Jones with ancient alien race and future black holes planets space ships with AI’s and enjoyable, it’s just crazy fast running story which is hard to put down for brakes or sleep.
Dave Cruse excellent narration with different voices for each character was a perfect choice for this series without a doubt !

I absolutely recommend
this trilogy for all !!!

Well, I'm a male chauvinist and I do not like female leading characters! There are very few stories written with female leads that I have ever bothered reading and if I did, it's because they were very, very good books! This happens to be in the very, very good book category or I wouldn't be writing about it.

What I found so likable about this book was the language and just the way the words flowed. I don't know how to describe it, but when you start reading a new book and you are flying through the pages, then you should know that the writing is very similar to the way you naturally think. Or at least that's my theory. I've never read a book by Andrew Beery so I wasn't sure what to expect. He introduced his main character immediately in the book as Deborah Allen Riker. That first name clued me into the fact that this was going to be a female main character, I'm pretty sharp with things like that! Anyway, he didn't dwell on the sex of Ms. Riker, but went on to explain here nickname of "Admiral Dare". Now, that is what I consider a masculine name (yeah, I know there are female Admirals), but it is also military so that was a plus in my books. Anyway, Deborah doesn't like that nickname and she some how manages to get people to just use her initials which are D.A.R. and pushes that to Dare because of her "propensity to take extreme risks". So, "Admiral Dare" it is, but that sounds like some action hero type and that she is not.

What she actually is, is the Captain of the ISS Edmund Fitzgerald, a private survey ship and her normal occupation is that of archeologist. She's also a Doctor of Xenoarchaelogy which meant she didn't hang around Earth much at all. That was good because lately some of her more recent clients had her looking for ancient artifacts that were not supposed to be found. Most of those were from a very ancient and advanced civilization called the "Jabesh". There were very few Jabesh artifacts available and those that were considered very extreme technology. It was also believed the Jabesh had some how managed to create very small power sources, so small that you could hold one in your hand and if you put twelve of these together, you'd have enough power for your entire civilization!

Word had gotten out that someone named Jack Carter, another archeologist, had found a large cache of Jabesh tech. Captain Riker was very interested in what was found as were a number of other people one of which was a very large corporation called Trans-Matshuta Industries. They wanted the artifacts for themselves and were determined to do whatever was necessary to find this cache. That began with finding Jack Carter. Except, Mr. Carter was aboard Survey One. This was a gigantic city ship that was sent out to seed the galaxy with Earth fauna and flora in hopes of finding a permanent home of the now displaced citizens of Earth. The Earth was going through a new ice age caused by some unexplained reason and was, for the most part, uninhabitable. Still this ship was one of several in a fleet of ships that had started out from Earth. There were two factions in this fleet, one that wanted to return to Earth and fix it, while the other wanted to find a new home. The later seemed to have one out, but all of these ships with their millions of inhabitants, had saboteurs from each others groups. These saboteurs caused all sorts of trouble and resulted in that most all of these survey ships were lost somewhere. It hoped that Captain Riker could perhaps find this Survey One ship and then talk with Jack Carter! Just a simple job, but she really had nothing to start with but she would be in competition with the Trans-Matshuta Industries Corporation and they don't intend to play fair!

So, most of the story is about getting the Edmund Fitzgerald ready to go after Survey One. The Edmund Fitzgerald is also inhabited by an AI name "Fitz" which Captain Riker has come to think of as her daughter. Apparently artificial intelligence has become very, very advanced with the help of Jabesh technology as has human medical applications. They can even build androids that almost appear to be humans and you'll meet one of those during the story. Still, I like the way the book was written very much. The story is from a first person prospective with that being from Captain Riker. She is very plain spoken and her observations are very clear to understand. The words in the book just seemed to flow for me and her gendered had nothing to do with anything!

In fact, I enjoyed this book so much that I'm going to get the second book, "Lost Ship", on or about 17 August 2021 when it will be available on Amazon.

9/10: Fantastic, left me wanting more.

It should be noted that what I wanted and what the universe wanted were often at odds with one another.

Wow! Loved this! It was slated as a military sci-fi and in a way it was, but it was so much more than that. I loved the irreverent protagonist, I loved the humour throughout, and I loved the world-building & character interactions.

“Your wish is my command, Admiral Mom.”

And I LOVED the AI.

The colonel didn’t know it yet, but he was mine. It was just a matter of time before he came to realize his fate.

And I absolutely LOVED the hint of romantic interest between the protag and her first officer.

This was a wonderful introduction to this author's work, but I soon noted it wasn't the only series set in this universe. I've since gone on to read the series the came before this one. And now have started the original series in this Book World. I might be reading them backwards, but hey, I am having a ball!

I’ve often wondered if the Great Bird of the Galaxy were to come and take roost on my head, would it lay an egg or take a dump?

Who could not enjoy that sort of writing?

Good book, some slow spots too much archaeology.

If you like militaryscience fiction, with some education thrown in, fast paced enjoyable, very little to no profanity and a great female protagonist you’ll enjoy this book. The book has everything, great character development, a good sci-fi tech tree. The only thing that caused me not to give this book 5 stars was the moralizing over saving enemies who cost the lives of thousands of people. This took me out of the story that Deborah was considering saving the lives of mass murderers, what do you do with them when you save them. Not too realistic in my opinion. Yes on a planet you turn them over to the justice system so that they can be housed away from your populace, you are in a spaceship in the middle of nowhere. Enemies like this deserve no quarter. Unless the author is using them as plot armor. Love the pop references specially toward Babylon five and Star Trek. Going on to read the next book.

The story itself is ok, however almost everything just works out right so the tension is lost. The main character is a woman, poorly written by a man. Some of the things she says and thinks are just totally out of character for a woman. The other pet peeve of mine is the author pushing the ridiculous intelligent design concepts. There are two alien races, the good guys who believe in an “uncreated creator”, whose existence has been “proven by science” and who lives in some higher dimension, and the bad guys who don’t. These races existed before “god designed the bacteria on earth”.

As I said, the story isn’t bad but it just didn’t catch me. If it had I would’ve ignored the poorly written main character.

If you're looking for a light, fun story to read over a long weekend, grab Survey Ship.

Survey Ship is a classic, fast paced Sci Fi adventure story. There isn't a ton of character development, but that isn't really the point of stories like this. It's a straightforward, fun adventure in the stars. The characters move from one crisis to another, and overcome them by the skin of their teeth. Exposition can be a little clunky and the main character focuses a lot of cultural touchstones that we're familiar with, but it's still a good time, and worth a read.

AI’s With An Attitude

Really enjoyed this book and will definitely be grabbing the next book in the series. So many things to love about it but don’t want to spoil one second of it for any future reader. Suffice it to say; author Andrew Beery manages to have AI’s with real personalities without it sounding forced or silly. Not to mention some wonderful main characters and we learn that Luke and Laura’s love life kept people across the Galaxy intrigued for centuries!

Interesting story. Not sure I've seen AI joined with human interaction done so well before, the snarky AI, the references to Babylon 5, Startrek, General Hospital, and even Gordon Lightfoot (the last one was a given based on the name of the ship), and other references I missed no doubt, but it all joins together to create an amusing tale with the desire to read more, so I'm off to grab the next volume, and have at it.

I really enjoyed reading this - classic but fun scifi without long exhaustive world building, a great and gutsy female lead and an interesting story. There were plenty of exciting elements to the story, several twists, and what I like best, plenty of action.
I'm looking forward to the rest of this series - from what I have seen in this first book, it should be good!

Excellent sci fi adventure

The world building is great, the AIs are awesome, and I love Dare. I was saddened by a character death, and the unnamed crowd deaths add up by the end of the book, but the thrilling adventure and great characters make Survey Ship an instant favorite. I read it in KU but will buy it to reread.

Great storyline, science very in-depth, characters....

Ok, love the story strong hero's, great ideas BUT, the characters stolen from other places very distracting. Also stealing whole cloth Kirk's speech with Bones when the 1701 was burning up, very bad and not needed. Three stars is being kind.

"What could possibly go wrong?"
A futuristic thriller following the (mis)adventures of an archaeological grifter, another refugee from the earth, whose Sun was eaten 30 years before by alien spores. Great fun, sparky lead character, well written and really rather amusing. Recommended for SF fans.

Enjoyable read

Well crafted and easy to embrace the world the characters lived in. A great Sci-fi story which kept me reading and can’t wait to start reading the next book in the series.

Loved it.

Great story with wonderfully developed characters. The character naming is a little tongue in cheek humor. The story is excellent with the creation of new and unique universe filled with different alien races.

Interesting writing concept

I like the first person writing as it gives better insight to the main character. On to book number two!

It's generally a good read, a fast-paced sci-fi adventure with a range of good characters, and strong world-building, and while it has links to the author's other works, it works as a stand-alone. That's its strength.

The negative is the author's almost obsessive side references to Star Trek, character names are nicked, to put it bluntly, as are some ideas and terminology. At first, I thought the author was new to the writing game and wanted to write a "Star Trek" book. So not quite fan fiction but sort of going there. Then I discover this is a well-established author, who I have read extensively in the past and had forgotten about. So what he's playing at is beyond me. The fact is the characters and story work and works well without the blatant references to Star Trek.

I enjoyed it enough to pick up the two following volumes so what that says I leave you to figure out, while I go for a lie down to ease my spinning head.

Story: ****
Performance: ***

I read this one twice … and yes it was good enough to do that. The narration was decent, but not great. Female voices in particular were an obvious struggle so I would rate the performance just above Alexa. Fortunately the story itself was good enough to carry it (which is not typical in my experience) and the whole is good enough to grab the next two books in the series (that and the mild cliffhanger ending).

The primary protagonist is a tough as nails xeno-archaeologist cut in the image of an Indiana Jones motif with all the expected brass and snark, making this a fun adventure. Said hero is recruited to find a missing “survey ship” aka colony ship. The bad guys are fairy standard evil empire corporations (standard trope). There is a bit of intrigue and espionage, but the focus tilts more toward military sci-fi where the tech details are pretty solid (a pleasant surprise after becoming used to BFM masquerading as science). To make it work, the author needs to engage in info-dumps … however, these are very short and seamlessly working into the narrative at decision points in enough humor to make these appear as an important part of the entertainment and world building. Regardless, the author has obvious done the homework and I was extremely happy with the result; however, the detail might not work as well for everybody.

Over all ... the standard tropes are so well executed that you barely notice that you have heard them before. It's just fun entertainment that is worth the investment.

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
