It’s true we may see things more clearly in the light of the sun. But the moon’s glow can give us insight into what lives within us and needs to be nurtured, as one young girl finds out alone in her room on a sunny afternoon. Small room. Big moon. Lots of questions. No easy answers.
When I read the Moon Came to My Room by Nancy Giangrasse I found it is a wonderful tale about a young girl who is visited by a very special entity, the moon. When it arrives, it is tired and looking for a place to rest but before she is able to help the moon, it disappears and she awakes from her unusual dream. This is a great book on several levels, it has rhyming and a large part of it is prediction based. What should she do? I was surprised by the twist of her relationship with her mother who resembled the moon. This book would be perfect as a read aloud with a pause for the words that may not be understood by younger listeners. It would also be perfect for an addition to a classroom library for Mother's Day.
This delightful book would make a good bedtime story or one to read anytime. Not only do children find a fun and imaginative tale about a visit from the moon, they learn along with the girl in the story about being empathetic. The illustrations are cute. I especially love the final page. The text contains rhymes but the rhythm is frequently uneven. I found my first read-through helped me realize how best to emphasize the words, so a practice read is recommended before reading aloud. I think kids will want to hear this over and over. It could also lead to positive discussions about being aware of others’ needs and caring for each other. I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my very own.
When the Moon Came to My Room is a beautiful picture book with lovely illustrations (particularly the depictions of the moon), with a touching message about empathy, consideration, and understanding what others are feeling. Story is magical and mysterious, but brought back to earth and reality in the end.
Rhymes are a little forced, but mostly work. More mom-friendly than kid-friendly
Checked out at library and reviewed in consideration for Cybils Award Easy Chapter book shortlist for 2021. *definitely think it was nominated in the wrong category, as it is really a picture book
