Went to about the 50-percent mark before I finally folded. I saw a few positive reviews here and the short description intrigued me. I honestly felt like I was reading the script from a Seinfeld episode (show about nothing), book about nothing.
I did find the characters believable, however, along with an interesting Prologue and first few chapters. But man, I could go about my daily life and see more action than this...the book just wasn't a good fit.
The Towers protect the people who live within the range of their perimeter. Only certain people may pass the perimeter without being vaporized. What happened to the Earth to cause the need of such protection and containment? Beats me. The bulk of the book is taken up with Dove and Gage coming of age to choose their adult vocation, and a large amount of petty politics, which I could have done without. The story only began to get interesting toward the end when something unexpected happened...just in time to seek and hook the reader into buying the next book. Surprise.
I was captivated by this book but I also found it a bit slow moving at times. Of course, more action started happening at the end so now I feel compelled to read the next book but I hope it moves a bit faster than this one did. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy dystopian fiction.
16 years after a monumental event that claimed the lives of most humans, one existing village is ready to have the first child born at the time of the disaster choose her path in life. (She was actually born on the day of Armageddon.) Chaos ensues when her choice is not expected, sending the village into a tailspin. What the village council decides affects everyone, especially the just-turned 16 year old girl. 16 is the age they determined is the magic number for adulthood and the time to pick a job. Interesting premises, but one confusing and big topic left me stymied. It is mentioned that for 16 years the village has worked and planned on the first "choosing". What muddies the water are the statements that the girl is the oldest child and she and her best friend are older than the rest of the kids by a few years; there are no kids older than 16. Supposedly she is the first in all the known villages to boot. So does this means absolutely no children survived the event at all? How did they know that for sixteen years they'd be planning a "choosing" if the attack on humanity was a surprise? Still, looking forward to the next book. Maybe there will be an explanation then.
There's been a really weird thing happen that killed off most of humanity. Surviving towns ended up building towers of some kind that somehow stop the danger. If a person goes beyond the area protected by the towers, though, they seem to disintegrate.
There are traders that somehow make their way between the protected towns without dying and this brings things to the townspeople that they need.
So, right off we have some fairly major problems. If most of humanity died, then how did the surviving towns get the materials needed to build and operate the towers? Second, how can traders bring enough supplies to the townspeople considering their mode of travel? Third, wouldn't the town's natural population grown cause major problems over time? Fourth, are there enough people left in the towns to have a large enough breeding group and avoid inbreeding?
Luna is a young woman who is training to become a technician who will work on the towers but her family has secrets and will have a major effect on her life.
Things move on from there but in my opinion there are way too many things overlooked that result in making the entire situation unbelievable and unworkable.
I didn't know what to expect from this book when I started it but I gotta say that I LOVED THIS BOOK! It flowed so quickly, so smooth, and now I must buy the second book! I'm not the sort of reviewer who tells what the book is about, anyone can figure that out for themselves, but I do like to give my opinion on the book, on how I liked it or didn't like it. It took me less than 24 hours to read this which, for me, is astounding as I rarely find the time to just sit and read! I had read a couple pages 2 days ago but alas, life took over and I didn't get back to it until the following evening. I'm so glad I got back to it because it was an excellent book. The characters are well fleshed out and interesting and you think you know what's going to happen and then something else happens that makes more sense and then that ending! OMG I did NOT see that coming! So, if you'll excuse me, I simply must rush and get the 2nd book now!
I chose this book based on all the great reviews. There were several reasons why I did not like the book. I truly just tolerate Young Adult books. After raising my children and currently my grandchildren, I am done with reading books better suited for teenagers and young adults. Secondly, I found the book slowing and hard to engage for all but the last 60 minutes. I was not compelled to press “play” so finishing the book took longer than most. I had no issues with the narration. I will not be continuing this series.
This is something different, does not run with any zombies at least not in first book. Characters are well defined, you either . Love them or hate them. They all live in a protected village, which they cannot leave except one who they call trader.the children on reaching 16years have to be assigned a trade, that is the rub. I have described it very simplistically which it isn't. I have become hooked, very much good value reading.
I loved it up until page 304 (of 312) and then had a NOOOOOO!!!! moment. I then thought, well I came this far, I may as well finish the last snippet, and all was well. Great world building, believable characters, to both love and hate, and plenty of plot twists and turns. I finished and immediately bought the next one.
I have a set of 'beginnings' by this author and number one of this series hooked me from the start.
I was intrigued by the idea and the mysteries that popped up throughout the story. I liked the characters - both good and bad - because they fitted well into the tale.
Of course, I had to buy the next two parts because I need to know what it's about - clever ploy.
I'm tired of buying a book and getting an exserrt, a part of the story. Then finding out that I need to buy another book to read more in the same story. There is no begining, story body and ending here. There is only a begining, greed is ruining the kindle experience for me. I only trust the classics, the new Arthur's practice this bullshit !
I’m a huge fan of “The Game is Life” series and this is another gem! If you love sci-fi/fantasy fiction, give this a go! Full of interesting characters, twists and turns and unique and wonderful world building. I love that his books touch the edge of reality and push you to ask questions. I’ll be reading the next in the series immediately.
Adventure, mystery, sci-fi/fantasy, friendships, romance, action...it’s all in this story! Check it out. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Just a little sad because I have to wait on the next book in the series. Please hurry and write it!
Another amazing story !! I love each and every book by Terry Schott I have read. And Towers doesn't disappoint. This story is incredible. How do you come up with these worlds? You are and amazing writer Terry Schott. Now it is time to read Ghost!!!! Thank you!!
I felt like I was walking beside each character. I felt their puzzlement, emotions. Then sudden twist of a sentence, and my mind was " playing catch up." Well written, well imagined.
This was one of the best "Sci fi" books I've read. Immediately you are pulled into the story and it seems like this could be a real scenario. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.
This book was a very good read, I just couldn't put it down waiting to find out more about this fascinating world, you find out a few things but it keeps you tantalising on the edge waiting for the rest to unveil itself.
Luna should have disowned Gage and his family for the manipulative game they played with getting Gage to be the Trader and blocking Luna from that position. Gage is just like his Dad, a younger version.
Ok so far this has been Interesting, the characters are developing nicely and the story line is coming along nicely so far… but damn it the first character casualty is hard to take …. On to book two!
I’m hooked! Great flow to the writing. Twists and turns along the way. Seriously picture this all happening. I do hate it ended on a cliffhanger but so thankful I can continue into next book! Can’t wait to continue the adventure!!!
A bit of a different sort of book than I generally read... tends to be a bit too " youngish " for my tastes and at this point, I do not know that I will continue the series.... May give the next one a try later but just not really my kind of read...No real complaints, just could not be into it.
This was a good read. Definitely has the feel of a young adult coming of age book but still has well developed characters. I am tired of the series aspect of young adult books. Why does every thing have to be a trilogy?
I'm looking forward to devouring the rest of this awesome series! It you're on the fence, don't hesitate. It may be written as YA, but as an adult I'm totally loving it
Another cliffhanger! All books should be tied up within the scope of the book! I did buy all three, but I hate feeling forced! The story is exciting, but so much was left out. So, not happy! Only buy this if you're willing to buy the others!
A very unique take on the apocalypse, no zombies! I would have liked a little more info on how the apocalypse began. Overall very enjoyable read. I'm looking forward to the next book
This book has a really interesting twist on post apocalyptic literature and it’s a fun read. I loved that the book didn’t drag and was a quick read. I can’t wait to see what happens in books 2 and 3 now.
I've read nearly all of the books Terry Schott has written. This one wasn't one of my favorites. I'll have to read the next installment to see if the story jells.
