They had all the time in the world, until the future disappeared almost overnight.
Sarah Jacobs had everything: A nice home in the suburbs of Pasadena, a twin brother to share things with, and two doting parents who made sure they wanted for nothing. Then the Ruger Virus came, and the world fell apart.
Now, nothing will ever be the same.
Forced to flee the city, and the state of California, as the virus ravages the area, the family is faced with one hurdle after another. There is nowhere to go, and no one to help them, as they search for a safe place. They learn from other travelers of a military base near Denver, Colorado that is offering refuge to healthy survivors, and soon it becomes their only hope as things grow more and more dire.
Will they get there before the world collapses around them?
Samantha Arthurs is the author of the Rust series, the Rag & Bone trilogy, Murder Mittens, and My First Exorcism. Her debut novel was published by Martin Sisters Publishing in 2014, and she is currently working exclusively with Cat&Key Books. When she isn’t writing she enjoys reading and reviewing books, hanging out with her dogs Ronan and Vader, playing Dungeons and Dragons, and watching horror movies. She was born and raised in eastern Kentucky, where she still happily resides in the middle of nowhere. Her primary dream in life is to become a full time author, hiding away in her little foothills studio with all her creepy stuff.
Ashes is the second part of the Rag and Bone trilogy and oh my, it’s as thrilling and exciting as the first part. The story revolves around twins; Sarah Jacobs and Trey Jacobs, who were living peacefully in Pasadena with their parents until one day everything is gone and they’re on a run for their lives. They survive the Ruger virus (named after the scientist who discovered it) but they lose so much along the way. They lose their parents, food, shelter and most importantly trust. The pandemic creates such a situation that everyone is greedy and they snatch whatever they find from whoever comes in front of them. The twins are innocent, sensible and brave. They stick together through everything and don’t let go of each other, no matter what! I’m glad the twins meet Avery Harris from part one at the facility. I love the character development. It’s so devastating and heartbreaking to read about such a situation; how a breakout can cause a huge destruction, killing all the people and disturbing the natural system of the Earth. There are so many lessons along with trips and tricks; how to survive in a situation like this and what things are most essential to carry along. I absolutely love Samantha’s writing it’s so spellbinding and interesting. The story is so intriguing, it kept me on my toes and the plots are shocking yet eye-opening. A very action-packed and gripping read. Now super excited and waiting for the last part!
Ashes is the second installment in the "The Rag and Bone" trilogy.
The book follows the story of a family who's trying to survive the Rugar virus that makes an appearance in their town. The virus has been spreading in several parts of the world and taking many lives. It's their journey from one place to another which gets worse with the passage of time as all their supplies get used and they're left with little to no food and no gas in their car. A story of all the hardships they have to face.
It was different from anything I've ever read before. I haven't yet finished it because of my exams but the chapters that I have read, made me feel sad because of their situation and how hard it would be for anyone to survive in these circumstances. The writing was good enough to make one feel things just like the characters were feeling. I'm very curious to see how it ends and whether or not all of them survive.
The first book started off by showing us a world destroyed by a pandemic and how Avery was trying to survive with no one else by her side except her pet beagle. A virus called Ruger Virus had killed off Avery's whole hometown leaving him the lone survivor, and had nearly wiped out the rest of the world's population in 2 years. The setting was exceptional, we go from the present setting to the past before the virus had destroyed everything, I was immediately immersed into the story.
The second book depicts the story of Sarah Jacobs, it starts off by showing how she was leading a simple happy life with her family and twin brother and how gradually things started to fall apart after how the virus started spreading slowly but surely, and Sarah and her family had to flee for their lives to a military base where they believed was a safe zone.
Seeing the virus tear apart the population was very vivid and hit right in the feels due to the similar events we all went through. It showed how in desperate times, people started turning against each other for survival, I really enjoyed read these books.
"All there was left in the world was the need for survival, everything else had been reduced to ashes." ~Ashes
Sarah Jacob and her twin Trey were living happily with their family in their town Pasadena, California. While one day, her mom heard a news about a deadly virus named Ruger Virus and it scared her but the twins didn't consider it a big deal. Unfortunately, Ruger Virus cases were increasing day by day in the States and this thing startled the Jacob family. Therefore they made a decision of moving out somewhere safe and in this journey they suffered a lot. Their father was lost or maybe dead while in search of food for his family and their mother got infected by the virus. Thus, at the end only twins were left. Sarah and Trey still didn't lost hope. They'd heard about a facility arranged by military for the survivors. So, they aimed to walk to that facility. Will that facility really be safe for them? Will there any other survivors left?
Part 2 is about another family called Jacobs - they have twins and they are hit by the Ruger Virus. They go through a lot of hardships and my heart goes out to all those who are fighting and have lost loved ones. I can not imagine a world without my family and closed ones. The writing is absolutely AMAZING! I highly recommend this trilogy and can not wait for part 3.

Thank you Moonlight Book Tours and Samantha Arthurs for providing me with opportunity to read and review this book. Ashes is the second installment in Samantha Arthurs' dystopian Rag and Bone trilogy.
The book follows the story of 15 years old Sarah Jacobs, her twin brother Trey and their parents. It's set in the year 2017 when a viral infection breaks out in Louisiana and quickly spreads to other states of the US and eventually to the rest of the world. In a panicked state, the family decides to leave for a more remote place to protect themselves and then starts a game of survival. And soon, the twins learn that the truth is far from what they actually thought. The best thing about it was that it was very easy to read. The character development was good. The depiction of a pandemic and how people deal with it is quite accurate. The book made me gloomy on a few occasions and that is the quality of a good book. I'm really looking forward to what happens in the next book!
If you're looking for a good dystopian ficion (which is actually reality fiction now that we've lived through a pandemic ourselves), then you should surely check this out!
In a lot of ways Ashes is everything Transmission was not. Transmission jumped between current time after Ruger Virus had taken hold, and flashbacks to when it first started. Ashes is a totally linear story starting right from the very beginning of the virus being heard about, and runs you along from there. Transmission focuses a lot on the horrors of solitude, being alone in just a state. Ashes follows a family, who at certain points is grouped with other survivors. You also just get different perspective of this book starting in an urban setting.
It tells the story differently, in a way that adds to the first book and gives you a more rounded feel for the Ruger Pandemic, the state of the USA.
It's a slow burn this time around. It's gut wrenching at certain points, and following the twins (Sarah and Trey) through the process of being normal young teens worrying about their summer plans, to trying to survive a winter in the wilds of Colorado is a ride.
Bringing you the review for the second book "Ashes" in rag & bone trilogy.
Now let's get to the book, shall we.
In the first book we followed the struggle of someone who stayed at their place in the spread of ruger virus.
While this book explores the struggle of the people who chose to leave their place for the search of betterment. We follow twins Sarah and Trey, both 14 years old, their struggle and pain in this spread of a deadly virus
They have to go through the pain of leaving their beloveds to die and face hurdles in hiding.
As always the writing was top notch. And this book won a plus point with no grammatical mistakes.
While both of the books revolve around people going through this hard time, it's much plot heavy. Which is very interesting to read.
Most of the time, it feels like we are the characters which is very amazing cuz not so many books with this sort of writing and plot are able to do that.
Over all it's building up the momentum and I can't wait to read the final part.
This is the second book from "Rag and Bone" triology. This book is as thrilling, exciting, adventurous, and heartrenching as the first one. In first part the story revolves around a boy who survived the Rugar virus pandemic while this part revolves around the twins who survived the Ruger virus breakout. We can see that how those twins survived together through thick and thin until the very last. In this part I've seen the dark side of human nature about how a human can turn greedy and ruthless. After this real COVID-19 pandemic I can understand the real struggles of these twins. How they had to fight for food, shelter and safety not knowing the ultimate cause but only by living with the hope and the will to survive and live. Now last book is going to be amazing as it has to come to an end. The plot, twisting events and the world building and character building was amazing. I enjoyed reading it with my emotions from inside out sitting inside my skull.
Like Coronavirus came and all of a sudden everything was changed, lockdown started everywhere and everyone was told to follow SOP, so this story is also like this, in this story also everything works like routine, children go to school, playing and mother's do home chores father's goes to job.
Both of them were following their routine. They went to school. Then they went to play with their friends. Sarah's mother is very fond of watching news. Suddenly a virus has spread in the country so everyone stayed at home and did not leave the house and after watching this news, everyone got upset. If you read part 1 of this book part 2 is just like this but it's very interesting and author did a great job to write this amazing story and te wording are so simple and easy so everyone will understand easily
