A new werewolf crime mystery from writer Eric Palicki and artist Wendell Cavalcanti!
Meet Janie Jones “Strummer” Mercado—just an ordinary werewolf PI,trying to make it on the mean streets of LA. When the case of a lifetime falls into her lap, it’s up to her and her charming djinn assistant Ben Si’lat to figure out just how many silver bullets have been used. And just where do silver bullets come from, anyway?
Have enjoyed everything I've read from Ahoy Comics, and this is no exception. Urban fantasy noir with werewolves! What's not to love? Great pacing, and I could really see readers hanging on between issues. It's one complete story but I hope these characters continue.
I'm a fan of Ahoy Comics. Not every book they publish is a home run, but you can tell that they're really invested in telling smart, creative stories. (Second Coming in particular is a book that I very strongly recommend.) I don't know why it took me so long to pull Black's Myth off my tbr pile. A queer werewolf detective story? Sounds like my jam. And... It's decent. It's really not very queer. The main detective is butch and she does sleep with a client, as hardboiled detectives traditionally do, but her queerness is as inconsequential as the fact that one of the characters just happens to be a minotaur. Is that progress or token diversity from a male creative team? I don't know. It's a decent story, though, if not exactly spectacular. It's been a while since any publisher has released a black and white monthly - I often enjoy black and white art, but I thought Black's Myth's look was mid. It has a good sense of motion and storytelling, but it looks more like uncolored inks than finished b&w art. A sequel is currently coming out monthly and I will read it when it's collected, but I can wait.
This was a really fast paced and engaging story. The art was pretty good in a sketchy way, but it worked for the story. I loved the integration of mythology and urban legends throughout the book too, that might've been my favorite part along with the gothic aesthetic (Gothic, dually in the Victorian and Modern sense).
Really fun urban fantasy with werewolves, vampires, and other mythological creatures who get involved in murder and mystery. Always fun when two of my favorite styles of stories--noir crime and horror--are mashed in together.
Cavalcanti's art on this is really good, too. Captures the feel of the noir story while still highlighting some great line work and distinctive characters.
The art was fine. I liked Ben, but not enough to feel drawn to continuing the series. Which is a real shame bc I was interested in the noir vibes it had going on. Didn't pass the Bechdel test either, which IMO is like ground zero for any media with a sapphic protag. :/
Well crafted supernatural detective story. Eric Palicki’s “Stummer” Mercado is an intriguing lead with fun supporting characters and Wendell Cavalcanti’s storytelling continues to impress. I look forward to more stories featuring these characters by this team.
Nádherně kreslený černobílý noire, s kapkou esence filmu American Werewolf in London.
