Discover the secret to being productive and successful no matter where you are with this essential guide to remote work.
During COVID-19, working from home became the new normal. Now, both employers and employees find that the remote work they were forced to adjust to may be, well, better—financially, sustainably, and even in terms of overall morale and productivity.
But working from home is not without its challenges. It can be difficult to eliminate distractions, strike a solid work/life balance, and maintain social connections that are crucial in the workplace. Whether you’re trying to find and land a job from the comfort of your home, learning to manage a virtual team, or dream of living a digital nomad lifestyle, The Everything Guide to Remote Work has everything you need to be successful. You’ll learn to optimize your own workplace culture, whether it’s in your home office or a constantly changing backdrop. So whether your company continues to work remotely full time or you only have to go to the office a few days a week, you’ll be armed with all the tools you’ll need to make the most out of this new lifestyle.
Although the book had a lot of information that I felt was self explanatory, there were some good points that I took away from it:
1. Create work spaces that are different from leisure and have a second work space that is one away from your desk or primary work area
2. Plan time to work in spaces outside of the home
3. The use of objectives and key results and tracking progress towards that
4. Meeting time is precious, and the burnout from meetings is definitely real. Focus on asking for agendas or creating them, use shared documents to work with teams on projects and be more mindful on how you use your time rather than just scheduling a meeting.
5. Tracking and sharing progress and wins.. write down your accomplishments and save any compliments you’ve been given.
6. Ask for specific tasks and responsibilities in order to grow and develop new skills.
The main takeaway I had from this book was using the fact you work remote to your advantage and using your voice to get you where you need. Being remote has plenty of positives if you take full advantage of them, and sometimes having a conversation with you boss about what is going on it can lead you farther than you think.
As someone who transitioned fairly successfully from office to remote work, I thought there might not be much for me to glean from this book. But actually, it helped me self-reflect about how to examine my now-hybrid work situation as the future of my career instead of just a temporary position, inspiring me to make immediate changes. If I were a supervisor or another type of leader in a company or organization, I would have added even more items to my to-do list after reading this.
This book takes an empathetic approach and gives bite size approaches and allows you to have kindness and patience with yourself when dealing with life. This is so necessary for everyone to read in life. Highly recommend. Especially loved the reflection to true life to humanize my feelings and relate. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This isn't really what I had expected. I was really just hoping for some tips on working remotely, but didn't find the answers I was looking for. It looks like great advice for any company thinking about going remote, however.
