It's not every day you are responsible for the wedding of the year, but Maddy Carson is up for the challenge... At least she was until she found her missing DJ murdered in a closet.
Now with her BFF a suspect she will have to figure out who the killer is to clear her friend's name.
Nancy was born and raised in New Jersey which may, or may not, have contributed to her pre-occupation with killing complete strangers. Since that is generally frowned upon in polite society she had to settle for sarcasm and occasional snarkiness. And usually in her own head. This led her to a career in law, rather organically.
Nancy was lucky enough to have moved around and have had the chance to do a lot of crazy things. Mostly because there was no one there to stop her. She also has her share of crazy friends who get her into unusual situations to begin with.
Nancy got into writing by accident when all the characters in her head demanded their voices be heard. They also encouraged her to re-locate to South Carolina when her job became remote. She hasn’t regretted either decision yet. When not practicing law, she enjoys reading in the sun, cross stitch and figuring out new ways to kill off complete strangers.
As a former Event Planner, I can say with certainty that we in the field tend to prepare for any eventuality. This is one eventuality that I don't think any of us have ever had to deal with or even think to plan around. When Maddy is hired to help plan the wedding of the daughter of one of her town's oldest families, the last thing she expects is to get embroiled in a murder investigation. Between Orange Gerbera Daisies, a demanding Mother of the Bride, a no-show DJ, and the fact that her ex-husband and his new, much younger wife are guests, this was bound to be a stressor of a wedding. What she didn't expect was for a dead body to literally fall on her during the wedding.
I absolutely loved Maddy's character. Happily divorced with 2 grown children, she is not the typical heroine in books. She is independent, single, and has great friends who understand the importance of potato skins. What more could she want? Probably for her best friend to not be the prime suspect of the murder. Maddy does what she does best... get involved. As with most cozy mysteries, hijinks ensue at this point.
This story has everything I look for in a cozy mystery... strong, fun characters, a great storyline that flows smoothly and a mystery that keeps you guessing. This debut novel by Nancy Monroe hooked me from the very first chapter. I cannot wait to see what else this new author has in store for us.
Mojjo627’s A Corpse in the Closet is a gripping, atmospheric mystery that blends classic whodunit elements with a fresh, modern voice. From the very first page, the author pulls readers into a world where secrets fester behind closed doors and every character harbors a motive.
The story centers around a seemingly quiet neighborhood disrupted by the shocking discovery of a body hidden in a closet. What follows is a tightly woven investigation filled with red herrings, unexpected twists, and a cast of vividly drawn characters—each more suspicious than the last. Mojjo627 masterfully balances suspense and pacing, keeping the reader guessing until the final, satisfying reveal.
What sets this novel apart is its sharp dialogue and psychological depth. The protagonist—whether a seasoned detective or an amateur sleuth (depending on the version you read)—is both relatable and compelling, navigating not only the mystery at hand but also personal demons that add emotional weight to the narrative.
The prose is crisp and evocative, painting scenes with cinematic clarity. Mojjo627’s talent for building tension is evident in every chapter, making it nearly impossible to put the book down.
4 ½ Stars The Corpse in the Closet is the first I've read by this author. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was captivated from start to finish. It is well written, has a nice flow, and gave me plenty of choices for the bad guy. I also like the cute cover. I love the main character, Maddy. She is well developed, and I appreciate that she is down to earth and someone you might meet in real life. Her nosiness isn’t as intrusive as some I’ve read in this genre. It’s just enough to be effective and, at times, humorous. Nor does the information get handed to her. It’s a nice balance of improbable and possible. And the tease about a potential romantic interest in the future is a bonus. The secondary and tertiary characters are interesting and supportive of the storyline, and their contributions to the piece kept me guessing about who the murderer was. The mystery is pleasantly challenging to solve, and my list of suspects was in a state of flux throughout. The Corpse in the Closet is a good cozy mystery, and I look forward to more from this author.

In Lake Wilson Maddy is an event planner, Jess is head of events at The Resort and Tommy owns/runs The Dive (A local bar), they have been friends since kindergarten. At the "Event of The Year", Maddy is planning at The Resort, she finds a body and she finds out her high school crush has moved back to town as a divorced man. I like all the characters except for a couple that are just plain annoying. I especially like the three friends, I wish I had friends like that growing up. I really hope this is the first book in a series, it looks like it. I'll be looking out for more in this series. I recommend this book for cozy mystery lovers.
This is an enjoyable cozy mystery by a new author. Maddie is an event planner who's working with her best friend during a wedding when a man is killed. Her friend is one of the suspects so Maddie gets involved in investigating it.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I did enjoy it. I only have it 4 stars because the ending seemed a bit rushed. The story was good and the characters likable. I will read another book by her.
How come I never get invited to anything that turns out interesting? Or murderous? I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The characters were developed well enough but not so much as to give away the ending.
For a first time novelist the author went almost toe to toe with Ian Rankin on the number of characters and the amount of twists and turns the story take. You can visualize the town of Lake Wilson and the shops and haunts that make it the perfect setting for a mystery series.
