I am officially taking a break from this series. I just couldn't finish the book. After the fantastic, climactic conclusion to the first story arc in the last volume, this meandering slog of a tale suffered from two problems.

The first problem was the FanBro F-Bomb Pandemic of 2021 where J-novel.club translators hit the streets in protest with signs like "DOWN WITH GOLLY DARN!", "███ █████!" and "███ ███ █████ ██████ █████ and see if we don't!" Well, maybe that didn't happen, but most of the stories I followed over there suddenly bled red as their ratings went from PG to R for a few pages. I blame COVID-19. After 6 volumes of fairly SFW language, Potions splurted vulgarities for two pages before quieting down to its broadcast friendly language again. Now, you can roll your eyes at me all you want, but I'm fairly certain that the original Japanese text wasn't quite so colorful. Maybe I'm wrong, but whatev. I wasn't a fan.

The second problem was that FUNA tends to pad her writing, especially in the setup scenes before any action happens. This was a problem in earlier volumes, but in this volume it was more pronounced. It's as if she writes stream of thought, then publishes without tightening the text. In one scene, Kaoru mused to herself for FOUR pages about how to sell fish for a living. I like fish. I don't want to read somebody pontificate about them. I found myself desperately skimming pages in clumps to find the next dialogue. Then I knew the musing had come to an end.

It wasn't a terrible book, and maybe people will hate this review, but this volume hit me wrong every which way. It was a surprise after the phenomenal volume 6. FUNA should have ended the series on a high with that volume.

amazing

I honestly like that Karou is helping orphans again and trying not to be called a deity for any reason. I honestly think her friends being reincarnated to her world is a hindrance to her. She was doing the best she could to help anyone. Now with her friends at her side she is doing the minimum. Let’s see where life with her new friends goes.
